At the April 23 St. Pete Beach City Commission meeting, the commissioners sat for more than six hours. They held a quasi-judicial hearing for the TradeWinds Island Resort.

What’s Happening with the TradeWinds?

Resort expansions on the beach have been a hot topic for the whole

year. The Sirata redevelopment became the focal point of multiple commission meetings. Now, the TradeWinds resort looks to expand as well.

What is the expansion? A new restaurant? Try this: more than 600 hotel rooms, with nearly 70,000 square feet of building space. The plan, set to end in 2043, includes a new hotel space, restaurants, pools,

and parking across three new buildings. The plan details four phases of work, each looking at a different part of development.

Ideas from the City

Commissioner Betty Rzewnicki spoke about her concerns with sea turtle lighting.

Pirate Dispatch A

Message From BCHS Principal Jennifer Gil

Greetings Pirate Community and Supporters,

We are mid-way through the final quarter of the school year and BCHS has begun to celebrate our many accomplishments for the 2023-2024 school year. Below are a few recent highlights since the last BCHS Community update in February:

Boca Ciega High Quarter Four

On March 28, Boca Ciega High School was revalidated as a National AVID Demonstration Site. Validators observed evidence of student/teacher empowerment and voice, rigorous instruction, and student collaboration. Validators had an opportunity to speak with students and teachers to ask in depths questions about campus culture and instruction.

Being an AVID National Demonstration Site means that BCHS serves as an exemplar institution for teaching and learning. Read more about in an article published by Dr. Goliath Davis in The Weekly Challenger

• Six AICE English Language students won awards in the extremely competitive annual Scholastic Art and Writing contest. Additionally,

senior Yohani Cortes earned a Gold Key (First place) and will be going on to compete at the national competition.

• Thirteen pieces of BCHS artwork have been selected for display at The James Museum, The Studio@620, and/or at the 13th Congressional District.

• Model United Nations students competed against 12 other schools in Pasco and Pinellas Counties. They earned awards in their various committees. Angelica Gentiano and Sophia Alzate-Santiago earned an Honorable Mention in the GA on Sustainable Tourism. Reese Vandewalle and Filip Ovcarov were named Outstanding Delegates in UNESCO Artificial Intelligence committee. Miles Dallara and Jean-Luc Lemos took top honors – gaveling – in the Security Council discussing the situation in Sudan.

• The Pinellas Council of Social Studies nominated three BCHS social studies teachers for Social Studies Teacher of the Year. Our three nominees were: Dr. Alicia Isaac, Christine Vandewalle, and Amanda Dogu.

• The Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) recognized ESE teacher

Matthew Clarke for his nomination for ESE Teacher of the Year.

• Irish 31 recognized AVID teacher Andrea Goode as a winner for the Cheers to Public Service award.

• The Office of Advanced Studies for Pinellas County Schools recognized five BCHS seniors at the annual Honors Breakfast. Students were recognized for their exceptional performance on AP test, the SAT, and the PSAT.

• Twenty-five CWMP seniors passed certification exams for their CNA license.

• And, last but not least, this passed week at the AVID Signing Ceremony, this year’s AVID senior class has already earning over $4.4 million dollars in scholarships. This is $100,000 more than last year’s class. The money has not stopped coming in.

These are great accomplishments! However, none of this could be possible without the dedication and love that BCHS faculty and staff pour into students each and every day.

Gulfport gathers

Teacher Appreciation Week

With that being said, Teacher Appreciation Week is upon us. Each year administration plans a week of food, giveaways, and activities to show BCHS staff how much we acknowledge their hard work. I want to encourage you to join us in these efforts.

Handsome Pasadena History

The Development of Bear Creek

People traveling south along 64th Street may notice two elaborate coquina rock walls as they approach Emerson Avenue South. Completed a century ago, these impressive formations signify one man’s ambitious and largely unfulfilled dreams to develop “Pasadena-on-the-Gulf.”

Ivan M. Taylor whipped up much excitement shortly after he blew into town. Popularly known as “Handsome Jack,” Taylor came to lower Pinellas around the time that locals cleaned up after the horrific October 1921 hurricane. Six months later, Taylor’s real estate schemes had moved much soil and cleared many forests.

In addition to the rock walls, the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club and Rolyat (“Taylor” spelled backwards) Hotel—now the campus of Stetson University’s College of Law—offer visible evidence of Taylor’s presence. However, Taylor’s Pasadena plans encompassed a larger area, much of it centered around Bear Creek.

A Peek at the Creek

Deer and Florida black bears once congregated near Bear Creek, in thick, tree-covered brush. The creek collected rainy runoff as it slowly meandered toward Boca Ciega Bay. Early settlers caught tarpon near its marshy mouth.

C.A. Harvey planned to drain nearly 1,000 acres of sawgrass marshes north of present-day Gulfport in June 1906. Workers soon built drainage ditches and created channels that forever changed portions of the creek.

That same month, Harvey incorporated his Bayboro Investment Company that reshaped lands south of downtown St. Petersburg near the mouths of Booker Creek and Salt Creek.

A year earlier, in April 1905, the streetcar line connected St. Peters-

burg and Gulfport, largely due to the efforts of Frank Allston Davis.

An early developer in St. Petersburg, Davis also helped to establish Pinellas Park in the early 1910s. At the same time, Davis purchased more than 12,000 acres of land west of St. Petersburg for his proposed Davista development. By 1913, the streetcar reached this area and continued northward to Jungle Prada.

Davis worked with Sunshine City leaders to extend Central Avenue to Davista. By September 1915, plans took shape to construct the first bridge built across Bear Creek at Central Avenue. Davista’s development stalled after F.A. Davis passed away in January 1917.

When “Handsome Jack” Taylor acquired many of Davis’ former holdings, he planned to transform Davista into the suburb of Pasadena-on-the-Gulf in 1922.

“I’m Taylor”

When Taylor arrived, other developers took notice. H. Walter Fuller, F. A. Davis’ business manager, and his son, Walter Pliny Fuller, had developed some areas near Taylor’s holdings. The younger Fuller, known for his properties in the Jungle, referred to Taylor as “quite a talker.” Taylor also had a somewhat mysterious background.

After some business difficulties and failed investments in New England and New York, Taylor departed to Europe. He returned stateside and came to Florida to reinvent himself.

When asked his name, the shrewd speculator often replied, “I.M. Taylor.” Others heard his reply as “I’m Taylor.” Soon, the nickname “Handsome Jack” sufficed as he parlayed Pasadena’s potential to investors.

Handsome Hyperbole in Pasadena

Taylor sold his first property in Pasadena in March 1922. By the end of that year, he touted the subdivision as “The Golden Gate of St. Petersburg.” He opened multiple real estate offices.

His holdings offered him a unique marketing opportunity. The only causeway from the mainland to Pass-a-Grille at that time connected Villa Grande Avenue South to 87th Avenue near Blind Pass, just north of the present Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School in St. Pete Beach.

Corey Causeway did not open until 1927. The first cars crossed Treasure Island Causeway and its newly dredged islands in 1939. During Taylor’s time, people who wanted to drive to Pass-a-Grille had to pass through his Pasadena.

Soon, Taylor parked a railroad car on sidetracks near the Seaboard Air Line railroad tracks that once crossed Central Avenue at the current location of the Pinellas Trail.

Trains frequently stopped at this location to drop off potential investors and homebuyers.

By late 1923, Taylor’s company regularly purchased half- and full-page ads in local newspapers. Often carrying the caption “Pasadena Editorial,” these advertisements offered a mix of slick marketing, tempting testimonials, and excessive exaggeration.

An ad in the Dec. 4, 1923 St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times) proclaimed that: “Even Miami Beach, that wonderful development on the East Coast, did not make as much progress in five years as Pasadena has made in 20 months.”

This same ad also mentioned the Bear Creek’s non-existent “20-feethigh banks.”

Pasadena Places

Taylor’s frequent advertisements described many features that have disappeared, as well as those never built. At that time, his Pasadena development reached as far as Seventh Avenue North.

Pasadena Nurseries sat along the north side of Central Avenue, between Pasadena Elementary — which opened in 1923 — and the present-day Pinellas Trail. Customers who entered the store were greeted by singing birds in a large cage. Doubling in size between October 1923 and April 1924, Taylor called his nursery the city’s “beauty parlor.”

As crews put the finishing touches on the 64th Street coquina rock walls, others poured the foundation for a proposed college. In early 1924, Taylor’s editorials frequently mentioned a university that would occupy a prominent location in his development.

When plans for a “University of Pasadena” fell through in July 1924, he claimed the site would become a modern hotel. Ironically, the Rolyat Hotel that opened on Jan. 1, 1926 later became the home of the state’s first law school in 1954.

Pasadena’s Aquadena

Taylor certainly saw the marketing value of St. Petersburg’s Fountain of Youth, originally created by E.H. Tomlinson. Not to be outdone, he knew that Pasadena needed its own legendary water source to compete with downtown St. Petersburg, as well as Wall Springs and Safety Harbor.

Conveniently, he tapped an artesian source of water located in Coconut Park. West of Park Street and a short distance south of the Garden Club of St. Petersburg’s current headquarters, this water source became a perfect stopping place for those traveling to and from Pass-aGrille along Villa Grande Avenue.

Taylor encouraged visitors to stop at the well he dubbed “Aquadena” in 1923. He invited them to fill bottles with the fresh water and “be healthy and wise by drinking without cost.”

His Workers Had a Blast

Some of the men who cleared the areas around Bear Creek and Pasadena had served as soldiers in World War I. Many of them participated in Pasadena continued on page 7

Revitalization of Tangerine Plaza Sugar Hill Development Group Reveals Plans in St. Pete

On April 9, the Sugar Hill Group announced its plans to bring at least 115 affordable housing units with an average of 80 percent median income and a 10,000-square-foot grocery store to the empty

of

In 2017, Walmart closed its neighborhood market at Tangerine Plaza, and the 40,000-square-foot building has remained empty ever since, creating what the federal government calls a food desert.

On Tuesday morning, the Sugar Hill Group and partner New Urban Development out of Miami announced that they would bring 115 affordable housing units and a 10,000-square-foot grocery store to the plaza, where Walmart continues to pay rent to the city. However, any plans to secure a store are impossible without ownership of the site.

“It’s hard for you to sell something that’s not yours,” said Rev. Louis Murphy, a partner with the Sugar Hill Group. “You can’t negotiate the sale of your house if you don’t own your house. We don’t own this until we have site control, and we hope

that we are there. Then, we can really start serious negotiations with some of the tenants that we have been in contact with. But we are excited about the ones that we’ve spoken with.”

The Kriseman administration chose the Sugar Hill Group to redevelop the site right before the pandemic, but plans were not formalized. Fast forward almost five years later, and another administration, residents are still without fresh food or affordable housing.

During the city’s March 24 Economic and Workforce Development Committee meeting, Mayor Ken Welch said he supports Sugar Hill’s plans, but Councilwoman Gina Driscoll was not sold on the group’s ability to secure a reputable longterm store or the timeline for completion.

“When we’ve been looking for an answer to this property for seven years already, it’s hard for me to get on board with something that might take seven more years before we even see something real happening here,” she stated.

Roy Binger, with Sugar Hill, said they hope to present something to the city council within the next month so they can formally ask for site control. If their proposal is approved, the group’s next step would be to put together a financial package. He said the project could cost between $25 and $30 million.

Real estate firm Stoneweg US, which is redeveloping Coquina Key Plaza, and Positive Impact Ministries submitted bids to purchase and revitalize the site; however, Sugar Hill remains in negotiations with the city.

Pasadena continued from page 5 the Meuse–Argonne Offensive, a series of deadly and explosive battles from Sept. 26 to Nov. 11, 1918 that ensured an Allied victory.

Not one to mince words, Taylor approved a somewhat harrowing and quite insensitive Feb. 21, 1924 advertisement that described how some of these veterans helped to clear his lands at Pasadena.

In part, the ad proclaimed, “Many of our young men were in the service during the war. Every once in a while they have a reminder of their experience at Argonne. We are doing a great deal of blasting. Great piles of dirt shoot into the air, trees fall, and the detonations remind them of Argonne. It inspires them to go forward.”

A Boomtime Destination

In addition to the Rolyat, the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club is the greatest remaining legacy of Taylor’s dream destination. Originally established as the Bear Creek

Golf and Country Club, the golf course first took shape a century ago under the watchful eye of Walter Charles Hagen.

As president of Bear Creek, Hagen brought prestige to the course under construction. Considered by some golfers to be the world’s first full-time golf professional, Hagen came to Bear Creek after winning the 1922 British Open championship. While helping to design the course, he won the 1924 British Open.

As workers removed all of the alligators they could from Bear Creek, Hagen left town and won the Professional Golfers’ Association of America 1924 PGA championship. The Pasadena 18-hole course opened at the end of 1924, with plans for a second course on lands west of 64th Street and Royal Palm Drive, alongside Bear Creek.

A Quick Departure

Hagen never oversaw the com-

pletion of the second course. Handsome Jack disappeared, leaving behind an ugly mess and uncollectible debts. Walter Fuller believed that “Jack became a victim of his own sales talk.”

The country club survived, discarding its “Bear Creek” name given for the body of water its greens never reached. Indeed, much of the unicorporated area between Gulfport, St. Petersburg, and South Pasadena represents lands planned for this second course.

On April 17, 1924, a Taylor-approved advertisement praised the coquina rock entry feature as the “first piece of structural beautification erected in Pasadena.” Handsome Jack pledged that it “exemplifies the permanency and solidity of our development.”

Long after Taylor disappeared, this handsome reminder of his development remains, complete with a coat of arms on each side. Enjoy its presence while recalling the frenzied activity that took place on the other side of the walls a century ago.

St. Pete Beach City Commission Updates

The City of St. Pete Beach is no stranger to a long commission meeting. At the April 23 St. Pete Beach City Commission meeting, the commissioners sat for more than six hours. They discussed everything from good citizens to the new city manager, to a quasi-judicial hearing for the TradeWinds Island Resort.

and after-school programs, brought up Griffin’s love for helping other campers and friends of any age.

Nicholson describes Leporati as a “quiet positive force.” She highlighted his storytelling ability, and how he is, “truly aware of how to be the calm in a storm.”

Citizen vs. Attorney

Tom Rask spoke first during the audience comments section of the meeting. He brought up how he believes the commission and the City as a whole are not following Florida Sunshine Laws. The City of St. Pete Beach currently has 18 pending lawsuits against them, and Rask believes it is because of corruption in City government.

“If you’re ramming through projects and placing unelected officials on the dais, you’re not going to prioritize the citizens constitutional rights to open meetings, the Florida Sunshine Law, or their constitutional right to public records,” said Rask.

He said that the City welcomes lawsuits, in hopes that it delays the production of records.

After Rask had finished his statement, City Attorney Andrew Dickman spoke up. While he first asked Rask about his statement, it quickly turned into a heated back and forth.

“At the last meeting, you called me a corrupt City Attorney,” said Dickman. “Do it when I’m here.”

“You are a corrupt City Attorney,” replied Rask.

“I’m glad you had the spine to do it,” said Dickman, with a smile.

“Those who corrupt the public policy process are corrupt,” said Rask, as he walked away from the podium.

Lot Split Request

New houses are coming to St. Pete Beach. The owners of what is to be

1110 4th Avenue requested to split Morey Beach, Block 8, Lot 16, from Lot 15, and building a single family home on the new lot.

According to City staff, the development would not increase density. The City unanimously approved the split.

New City Manager

The City hired a new City Manager. Frances Robustelli.

“I can tell you in working with Fran for a week and a half, I’m impressed by the speed in which she operates and makes decisions,” said Mayor Adrian Petrila. “I think that certainly bodes well.”

Commissioner Betty Rzewnicki (District 3) asked the Mayor to talk about details of the contract. Robustelli’s current employment requires her to give a 60-day notice before leave. She is currently the City Manager for the City of San Leandro in California. Her start date in St. Pete Beach is July 8.

Wayne Saunders, the current interim city manager, will work closely with Robustelli to help with the transition. Commissioner Richard Lorenzen (District 4) brought up his hesitation with the starting pay rate for Robustelli, currently set at $240,000 per year.

Mayor Petrila explained that while it is above the previous City Manager’s pay, the former contract included covered costs like housing allowance. It is also significantly less than Robustelli’s original ask.

“The previous contract had a smaller salary, but a much bigger package on the backside that wasn’t readily visible,” said Petrila. “This one is much more geared towards: This is the salary. The ancillary package items aren’t as pronounced.”

The City unanimously approved the contract.

How to Build a Tree Canopy

in Florida

You know you need to plant a tree. It’s hot and getting hotter, so why not cool things down in your own rectangle of paradise?

So you’re not into the whole live oak thing? You say “they’re boring, messy, and why bother planting them if we’re all going to be underwater in 60 years? And our grandchildren will be visiting your (future) stilt house in a dinghy?”

Sure, you want to cool things down, but you’d like it to happen as quickly as possible. Also, because you’re genetically predisposed to hopelessness in the best of times, you’d like some colorful flowers on your tree to cheer you up.

You asked for it. Here’s a rainbow approach to my favorite tropical and subtropical trees, ones I’ve used and been able to bear witness to their ability to survive in these parts of Florida. Keep in mind that they’ll freeze back and worse in a frost, but you’ll see centenarian examples of all of the below named trees throughout South Pinellas.

• Red

I love the quite weird kapok tree. It’s Tim-Burton-meets-Dr.-Seuss in its overall structure and thorny trunk, with gigantic deep red waxy blooms. For a smaller pink variant, look up the floss silk tree, suitable for small yards.

• Orange

There is nothing to compete with a royal poinciana tree when it comes into bloom. Large deep orange blooms seemed to elicit wonder and joy from people that you would swear had no pulse. This is a tree that grows so fast that it can go from a veritable twig to a complete front yard canopy within five-seven years. To the untrained eye, royal poinciana, yellow poinciana, and jacaranda are often mistaken for each other when not in bloom. Buy from a reputable source.

6:30 p.m. at Habana Cafe

• Yellow There are a multitude of yellow flowering trees to choose from, but none rival the size and show of a yellow poinciana (Peltophorum pterocarpum). Their canopy can cover a normal residential sized lot.

• Green

Go on, plant the live oak. You and your kiddos will be in halos before it becomes annoying. If your property is in Future Stiltsville, plant a green buttonwood tree — because your descendants will need something to tie the dinghy to.

• Blue

Puh-leez. There ain’t no blue. But, if you’re willing to suspend disbelief, check out the eerily deep purple tibouchina tree. More like a really large shrub, but so purple it makes your eyes hurt.

• Purple

My favorite is the Purple Trumpet tree (Handroanthus impetiginosus). Formerly classed as a tabebuia, this is a shade tree with no known rival amongst show-stopper tree blooms. Often confused with the pink trumpet tree (Tabebuia heterophylla), a less cold-tolerant yet more salt-tolerant cousin of the purple. The magnificent jacaranda tree, a Florida favorite of the last century, is another stalwart of the aubergine fankidz.

All are welcome, no reservations, no membership fees, but you must first read the book.

“When you say that we are compliant, I did go ask to find out whether a survey has been done, and there has not been a survey done for lighting,” said Rzewnicki. “Code Enforcement and SeaTrackers do it together. They go out and do a survey before the start of turtle season, which is May 1. As of today, there has not been a survey done. I want to make sure that is clarified because I don’t like hearing that we’re compliant when there hasn’t been a survey done, possibly this year.”

Additionally, Commissioner Karen Marriott (District 1) discussed her issue with trying to bring old buildings into compliance compared to modernizing the buildings.

“If our position going forward is that our interpretation of the comprehensive plan is that it is requiring replacement of all old buildings, that is a significantly different business model for someone who is investing to tear something down completely to bare ground, with no income coming in while they’re going through construction, and developing a project. Although that would certainly be an option, to me, that seems like a big ask for businesses investing on the beach.

“Frankly, we will all be incredibly lucky if in the next five to 10 years, all of those old buildings aren’t taken out by a hurricane anyway. At some point those buildings are going to get replaced. I personally would feel better about the status of the beach if we had some new

buildings that might withstand a storm, rather than making it so difficult for somebody to redevelop that redevelopment doesn’t happen,” Marriott said.

The commission approved the application, with Mayor Adrian Petrila and Rzewnicki voting against it.

More Development

Along with expanding, the TradeWinds has more plans, including a brand new rooftop terrace. The terrace features 360º views of St. Pete Beach and the Gulf of Mexico, and features food and drinks. It’s not only for guests but also, anyone can access the terrace through its dedicated elevator.  The Gabber Newspaper  re-

ported on this terrace recently. Scott Eisenhart of Nunzio Marc Desantis Architects said the rooftop viewing terrace will be a oneof-a-kind spot along the Pinellas beaches.

“We are designing it to create an unparalleled view for the public,” said Eisenhart. “... and look forward to when it will be open for everyone to enjoy.”

The resort also looks to educate visitors on the local environment, through ecotourism opportunities. Through ideas such as a mock sea turtle nest and beach cleanup initiatives, visitors can learn more bout how to take care of the area. While they don’t generally live here, the resort hopes the visitors can keep the beach clean overall.

Benefit Game, Pete’s Bagels, and Skateboarding Stay

Up-to-Date with Pinellas Businesses

Starting Thursday morning at 6 a.m., look for the “Hot Bagels” sign at 1407 49th St. S. in Gulfport. After months of navigating Gulfport’s Community Development department, getting the proper equipment, and getting the space ready for walk-up service, May 2 is B-Day. That’s “bagel day”: Pete’s Bagels will start serving freshly baked to Gulfport.

Unlike it’s flagship bagel shop in St. Pete or its newer Ybor location, Pete’s Bagels’ Gulfport location will offer walk-up window service only. It will also offer only bagels and bulk cream cheese, no bagel sandwiches. They will also have coffee and espresso.

That’s because the Gulfport location is more about production. The site, home to the blink-and-youmissed-it Rico’s Pizzeria & Pasta House, doesn’t have the ideal setup for table service — but owner Steve Petermann knows it’s practically perfect for making bagels in abundance.

For the past couple of months, Pete’s Bagels has made bagels for its Ybor and St. Pete locations at the Gulfport facility. He started renting the space shortly before Christmas 2023.

The amount of bagels baked at

the Gulfport location varies, he says, but on the weekends, they can easily bake up to 2,000 bagels a day.

Petermann expressed his appreciation to Gulfport’s mayor, Sam Henderson, and city manager Jim O’Reilly, who helped his business navigate some of the complexities of the City’s permitting and codes.

The bagels will start rolling at 6 a.m., but pay attention to the sign. When you see the “Hot Bagels” sign lit, it means the bagels are fresh out of the oven.

That’s when, Petermann says, you can “come get them out of the oven.”

Skateboarding Inspires Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays introduced their new City Connect “Grit & Glow” uniforms April 29. These black jerseys have green, blue, and purple colorways with flames on the top of each word in “Tampa Bay.” The Rays’ new cap logo combines the body of a manta ray with the side view of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

But, what inspired this new City Connect design? Tampa Bay’s history of skateboarding culture.

On one side of interstate-175 is St. Pete’s Tropicana Field, but on the other side is the St. Petersburg Regional Skatepark in Campbell Park. Most of the Rays’ City Connect promotional video takes place at this skatepark. It shows skaters swerving along half pipe walls, gliding across rails, and practicing kick flips

at the bottom of a skate bowl.

The Rays’ not only recognize the closest skatepark to Tropicana, but also one of the most historic skateparks in Florida: Bro Bowl. Located at Perry Harvey Sr. Park in Tampa, this skatepark was the first public skatepark in the state. Bro Bowl opened in 1978 and covers 17,000 square feet of the Tampa park.

Along with that, in 2013, Bro Bowl became the first skatepark to join the National Register of Historic Places, according to the Skateboarding Heritage Foundation. It is one of the world’s oldest and last remaining skateparks from the ‘70s. Also, Tony Hawk’s Underground video game in 2004 features Bro Bowl.

Another iconic skate spot is the SPoT: Skatepark of Tampa. What started as a crusty warehouse evolved into one of the most recognized skateparks globally. Brian Schaefer established the Skatepark of Tampa in 1993.

The Tampa Bay Rays recognized the impact skateboarding had on the Tampa Bay community over the last five decades. The Rays’ website states, “Tampa Bay’s place in the history of skateboarding would be incomplete without noting the contributions of the Skatepark of Tampa.”

Skateparks occupy a reasonable

amount of space across Tampa and St. Pete. St. Pete’s Parks and Recreation Department also lists Fossil Skatepark (6635 Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. St. N.) and Lake Vista Skatepark (1401 62nd Ave. S.).

The Rays’ City Connect video shows the popularity of the sport, the culture and heritage, and the similarities between skateboarding and baseball.

Less than 10 people rode around the skatepark the evening of April 29. But, across the interstate free skateboarding demonstrations took place outside of Tropicana.

Meanwhile, the team store opened inside for visitors to buy the new City Connect “Grit & Glow” gear. A few Rays players sported the uni-

forms for the crowd too.

The Rays’ organization explained the designs celebrate the “independent, underground spirit of Tampa Bay,” which is “our defiantly bold, bright, and vibrant home.” It pays homage to skate life, street art, and underground culture.

There are special details relating to this “Grit & Glow” idea on the players’ uniforms. First, on the cap’s underbill and jersey numbers is the texture of skateboarding grip tape.

Second, a graphic of a manta ray executing the “stalefish” move with a skateboard. This is where a skater grabs the back of the board in the air before landing. This “skating ray” is on the uniform’s inside neck and pant hip. The graphic illustrates the

Benefit Game for Florida Holocaust Museum

The Tampa Bay Rays will team up with the Florida Holocaust Museum for a benefit game. On Wednesday, May 22, the Rays will play against the Boston Red Sox. A portion of each ticket sold for that game will benefit the Florida Holocaust Museum.

Not only will the Tampa Bay Rays’ benefit game fundraise, but Holocaust survivor Viola “Ibi” Baras will throw the first pitch.

Baras, 96, was a teenager when Nazis took her and her family to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Baras’ family was one of two families — of 15,000 people — who survived the camp.

She is a Florida Holocaust Museum member along with her son David. David’s father, Sidney, also survived the Holocaust. David is an active speaker at the museum and a member of the Second Generation group (Generations After). According to the museum, he “speaks about his parents’ experiences and their effects on him and his family.”

The Florida Holocaust Museum exclusively sells $30 tickets for lower-level seats now through May 8. The museum said each ticket purchased contributes directly to “educating and inspiring future generations about the lessons of the Holocaust.”

Tropicana’s gates open at 5:20 p.m. with the game officially starting at 6:50 p.m.

Interested attendees can call, email, or visit the Florida Holocaust Museum for tickets to the Tampa Bay Rays’ benefit game. The Tropicana Field box offices do not offer this special discounted price.

That’s not all that the Florida Holocaust Museum has to offer this

month. On May 6, the museum invites community members to commemorate the innocent lives lost in the Holocaust with the Names Reading Ceremony.

In honor of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), individuals will read names of Holocaust victims in five-minute intervals. Along with the ceremony, the museum will offer free admission to attendees for the day.

Interested commemoration participants can contact Director of Public Programs Miranda Brenner about reading names. Email Brenner at mbrenner@thefhm.org or call 727-820-0100, ext. 276.

Never Grow Up

Former Eckerd Student Film in the Sunscreen Film Festival

When Rachael Flynn began her career at Eckerd College, she had no clue how it would end. Or really even how the middle would go. All she knew was she loved art, and wanted to turn that love into a career. Five years later, her big screen debut, The Magic Fort , graced the Sunscreen Film Festival last week. Her film, highlighting the fear of growing up, also demonstrates her personal growth through college, and early adulthood.

The Magic Fort

While at Eckerd, Flynn fell in love with set design.

“I found that I really liked editing, and that I really liked making stuff with my hands. That’s how I transitioned to production design,” said Flynn. “For my thesis, I knew I had to have a film element and an art element for my major. By my junior year I knew that I wanted my art show to be a behind the scenes of how my film was made.”

The Magic Fort  is a tribute to never growing up, or at least it seems. The film follows Maggie and her imaginary friend Reo as they embark on a quest to find and protect the aurora tiara from Reigel who seeks to destroy it and all of Maggie’s magic. Throughout the story, Maggie grapples with the idea of getting too old for this, but not wanting to leave it behind. Her magic fort, a cardboard and wood structure made by Flynn, holds the memories she never wants to lose.

“Being able to be yourself translates into the film” said Flynn. “The idea came from the idea that I didn’t really want to graduate college. I would’ve loved to stay there. I was making a film about a kid that doesn’t want to grow up, that related to the fact that I didn’t want to grow up.”

Coming Back

Flynn, a New Jersey native, moved back home after graduation. While life (and the job search) can be difficult for a young filmmaker, she holds a positive attitude about where she is at.

“I’m a completely different person now than when I started college, and I think that’s the case for a lot

of people,” said Flynn. “I love that I changed. I love who I am now, but in the film, (Maggie) resists that. But change is good, and there’s mostly positive things from change. Since I’ve graduated, not a lot has changed and I want to go back, but that’s resisting change again.”

Throughout college, Flynn’s films centered strongly around documen-

Sunscreen Film Festival

Tony Armer founded the Sunscreen Film Festival in 2005. According to the festival’s website, the Sunscreen Film Festival is a a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organized by the St. Petersburg Clearwater Film Soci-

ety. The website states it is “Tampa Bay’s oldest and longest-running mainstream film festival.”

This festival highlights films from all over the world, and of all lengths. This year, the Sunscreen Film Festival ran from April 25 to April 28.

The weekend included screenings of short and feature films, as well as seminars and guest speakers from the film industry. They also award films which wow them. At the 2024 festival, Bau Artist of War, a film by Emile Hirsch and Inbar Lavi cleaned up, winning Best Feature Film, Best Director, and the Dave Barrett Cinematography award.

Housed in downtown St. Petersburg, at the Sundial AMC theater, Best Florida Film is another special award for the festival. This year, Deep Awakening, a film by Brian Sheppard, won the award. For actors, filmmakers, and lovers of art, the Sunscreen Film Festival seeks to inspire all visitors to support films from all walks of life.

Many of the other films during Flynn’s block were wildly different. These productions focused on documentaries, deep insights into life in rehab, or building a rocket to reignite the sun.

Authentic Bavarian Mama G’s German Bakery in St. Pete

There’s no shortage of delicious bakeries in the St. Pete area. Mama G’s German Bakery and Coffeehouse is a gem. If you have a sweet tooth or straight up enjoy all the carbs, this place is a must-visit. With five generations of Bavarians in the business, they definitely know their baked goods. The OG location is in Sarasota, but Mama G’s expanded to the Sunshine City in 2018 with a location in Kenneth City. However, the newest spot is now open on Central Avenue in west St. Pete and if you haven’t been yet, you have no idea what you’re missing.

Pastries at Mama G’s German Bakery

This quaint bakery offers a rotating selection of goodies ranging from danishes and strudels, to soft pretzels and sourdough bread. Feast your eyes on sugar-dusted waffles, gigantic cinnamon rolls, and croissants. The danishes at Mama G’s are to die for. We sampled an apple danish ($3.85) and it was superb. It had chunks of fresh, sweetened apple throughout with a light, confectioner’s sugar glaze on top. The almond croissant ($3.85) was cloudlike fluffy with slivers of sugared almonds on top. On the day I visited, the Danish flavors included apple, cheese, cherry, blueberry, and plum. My cheese-and-plum danish hit the spot with its flaky crust, tart slices of fresh plum, and rich cream cheese center. Even though I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, the pastries at Mama G’s are spectacular. For those who eat gluten free, there is a small selection of items available each day. I ordered a raspberry almond bar ($3) and it was a buttery bite bursting with fresh raspberries — and so good I didn’t miss the gluten. If you prefer something more authentic, try an almond horn ($2.85). Loaded with almond extract, the horns are the perfect

vessel for dunking in a hot Mama G’s latte ($3.95). They’re chewy and crunchy at the same time, but the flavor will knock your socks off. And it’s also gluten free!

Cake and Lunch

Mama G’s is known for their Bienenstich, aka Bee Sting cake ($4.45). I was so determined to try this legendary dessert that I trekked back to the bakery a second time since they have this specialty on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s a sweet, yeasty dough filled with vanilla custard and is topped with honey and almonds. Absolutely decadent.

Any given day, you’ll find a fabulous selection of homemade breads. All of the breads are made in-house and without preservatives, sugar, oil,

or milk. But if you really want the full Bavarian experience, be sure to order off of the lunch menu. It’s available from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. You’ll find items like Jägerschnitzel, bratwurst, schweinshaxe (roasted pork shank), and potato pancakes on the menu. Tammi Carter-Budelier

Feb. 19, 1959—April 20, 2024

We are very saddened to share that our friend Tammi Carter-Budelier, passed from this life on April 20, 2024.

Tammi grew up in St Francis, WI

Unitarian Universalist United Fellowship

and spent most of her life in the Milwaukee area. We were fortunate to have her as part of our Gulfport community from 2020 until 2023. She also traveled extensively to South America, Thailand, and other exotic locales.

Tammi retired from Harley-Davidson and loved to ride her e-bike around town. She loved dancing, music, and all games. She was into personal growth and spirituality, and encouraged her friends to look deeper.

Although she only lived in Gulfport for a short time, she had a big impact on her community. She volunteered at the Gulfport Senior Center, the Gulfport Welcome Center, and Equality Florida.

She was full of love and laughter and never met a stranger.

A memorial service will be held at Tiki in Gulfport on May 3 from 5-7 p.m.
