Pesticides at Gulfport’s Dog Park
The golden retriever club of great Britain did a study on lawn chemicals and the increase in cancer for goldens by sniffing chemicals off of lawns. Roundup is supposed to be pulled off the shelf in 2024 and all lawn care workers should have taken the course offered by the county on the proper way and use of lawn chemicals. – Annie Westermann, via Facebook I’ve seen the company hired by the city spraying and signs for pesticides posted on parks with the Chemlawns as well. –Bryan Tree, via Facebook The Gabber welcomes and encourages letters and commentary. news Gulfport Boulevard’s New Look
City May Add Crosswalk, Mural, Lighting – But it Won’t Be Cheap By Abby Baker
ABBY BAKER
Gulfport City Council is considering a pricey project that would make Gulfport Boulevard walkable and decorative.
Gulfport Boulevard bears the city’s name in its title, but is it due for a makeover? A future redevelopment project aims to address just that. “Gulfport Boulevard, we have neglected in a sense over the years … we’ve put a lot of time and effort into downtown and other parts of the City,” Gulfport Councilmember Michael Fridovich (Ward IV) said at a Tuesday, March 15 council meeting. He went into loose detail, mentioning a potential crosswalk, a road mural, added foliage, and low-tothe-ground decorative streetlights. “It would be nice if we could get a walkway in front of Maddy’s Spa and Habana Cafe,” Fridovich said. “We’re getting more and more walkable businesses.” A road mural, much like St. Petersburg’s “Black Lives Matter”, was also thrown in the mix of ideas. “Some kind of funky ‘Welcome to Gulfport’ mural,” Fridovich suggested. Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly cautioned council about high costs that come with launching a fullblown road redevelopment project. In his former job as Leisure Services on St. Pete Beach, O’Reilly oversaw the 2002-3 improvements on the north end of the St. Pete Beach’s
Gulf Boulevard. “Understand that any of these things are going to take an investment,” O’Reilly said. “Pretty sizable, from my experience doing roadway projects like this.” The next steps, according to O’Reilly, would be for the City of Gulfport to draft a formal letter outlining their asks to Pinellas County. The County could possibly pay for parts of the project, but Gulfport will first need to determine some costs. “They may have funds available,” O’Reilly told The Gabber. “Street lights, any type of aesthetic improvements would be on us, but additional crosswalks could be something Pinellas pays for.”
The City will also need to receive estimates from Duke Energy, draft a landscape plan, and tally costs. “I’d love to be doing Gulfport Boulevard, as long as you can afford it,” O’Reilly said. Despite warnings of steep costs, Council expressed interest in continuing toward a beautification process of Gulfport Boulevard, which regularly sees less foot traffic than, say, downtown Gulfport. Adding aesthetically pleasing elements and making the road more walkable could bring more business to the area, supporters say. “Gulfport Boulevard is the gateway to Gulfport; let’s beautify it like the rest of Gulfport,” Fridovich told The Gabber. That idea isn’t lost on the business owners of Gulfport Boulevard. Recently, four of the Boulevard’s shops [Thai Orchids & Leis, Beach House 5317, Boulevard Shoppe, and Sail Market] have banded together to host monthly block parties that bring the community to their street. Beach House 5317 owner Jamie Edwards says a project highlighting Gulfport Boulevard is something she’s rooting for. “I think it would be amazing for the businesses that are here, a little out of the downtown area,” Edwards said. “Bring some beautification to the Boulevard.”

More than Alligators
Discarded Domestic, Exotic Pets Live Full Time at Discovery Center While spring breakers swarm the shores of Madeira Beach, other animals – including a displaced lemur, pigs, and tarantulas – go through their daily routines at the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center. Originally, the Center only housed juvenile alligators – and one tortoise. Once the gators reach four feet, they re-home them with larger rescues. They still do this, but over time the Center’s morphed into a refuge for surrendered exotic pets, most of which cannot be released into the wild. Not all – some are invasive species or injured wildlife – but many of the animals here were once pets. “A lot of what we do is educating people and maybe, say, encouraging people not to buy a four-foot lizard,” said General Manager Jamie Barron. John’s Pass Rescue is the nonprofit backing the wildlife center. Owner Sonny Flynn recently announced a two acre off-site expansion in Clearwater, where she will house the larger animals. But for now, residents such as pot bellied pigs Brutus and Barley, oink and sleep from their indoor pens. In the morning, they walk on a harness, sometimes even on the beach. In their previous life, the pigs were tiny babies that outgrew their homes. Flopsy, a domesticated rabbit, was rescued from a neglectful situation in a dorm room. “The mammals are all up and running around in the mornings before

anyone gets here,” said Gulfport resident Mimi Moya. Moya’s the primary caretaker of the arachnids. Often overlooked, but the most common species at the center: ball pythons. The snakes get surrendered by owners who not expecting the reptile’s size and upkeep costs. The animals still have a lifetime left, and oftentimes it’s up to organizations like the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center or The Florida Aquarium in Tampa to give them a home. The Center is not technically a zoo, but it is licensed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission, Florida Department of Agriculture, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the USDA. Fundraising and ticket sales keep the Center rolling. The Center’s claim to fame and popular tourist attraction is “gator pictures,” where visitors can pay to snap a picture with small alligators. “We rotate them out each day so it’s never the same alligator always working,” Barron, holding a restrained reptile, said. “They are such cool animals.” Book tickets and find more information at kissagator.com

St. Pete Beach Plants Free Trees for Homeowners Homeowners in St. Pete Beach can apply for a new beautification program if the home lacks vegetation in the right of way. According to a March 12 press release, the homeowner must also permit the city to plant trees and vegetation in said right of way. Although the City Commission agreed to fund the project, funds are slim, so the process is first come, first served. Interested homeowners can apply online. St. Pete Beach Chief Operating Officer, Jennifer McMahon, will oversee and monitor this project. “We are excited to have these beautification program funds available and urge residents to take advantage of them. Everyone will enjoy the look of the new green space. The program increases the beauty of our streets and improves the tree canopy,” McMahon wrote in the release. The three-step program is free to

the homeowner, and once the City of St. Pete Beach reviews and approves the application, the City makes arrangements for the project. The replacement of cement and asphalt with trees and vegetation will ensure a more ecologically sound landscape and increase the City’s tree canopy, according to the press release. Here’s how the program works: Interested homeowners apply to the program and if approved, the City
reviews available funds and distributes them accordingly. Then, the City sends out workers to scope out the landscape and plant trees and vegetation for the homeowners. After the trees get planted, the homeowner can complete a survey about the process; the City will review the feedback and determine how to use it to better the program. Gulfport Will Buy Hybrid Police Cars
Citing Supply Chain Issues, the City Reverses Decision on Hybrid Police Cars By Mike Sunnucks
FORD MOTOR COMPANY
Although Gulfport Council initially voted against buying hybrid patrol cars, supply chain issues caused the City to change course.
Despite voting two months ago to not buy hybrid vehicles for use as patrol cars, supply chain issues have forced the City’s hand. In January, Gulfport City Coun-
cil authorized the purchase of two Dodge Chargers as replacement vehicles for the Gulfport Police Department, but the dealership the City uses is out of stock and won’t

accept new orders until 2023, Council learned at the City’s March 15 Council meeting. Instead, Gulfport Police Chief Rob Vincent asked Council to approve the purchase of two new Ford Interceptor SUVs, at $33,338 each. Vincent assured Council the SUVs were immediately available. The unavailable Chargers would have cost the City $33,937 each. Back in January, Vice Mayor April Thanos (Ward I) asked the City to explore purchasing hybrid vehicles. Thanos is a frequent advocate for the City buying electric or hybrid vehicles. Due to lack of availability of gasoline-only vehicles, at the Tuesday night meeting, the rest of the council agreed to move forward with purchasing the hybrids. Council agreed to spend no more than $80,000 on two vehicles.
After receiving a heart transplant, Joy enters a downward spiral, unsure whether she truly deserves a second chance. Based on a true story, The Tin Woman explores loss, family, and what it means to be given a new life.

Senior Center Fundraising Update
AARP Could Donate $1 Million to Help Gulfport Build a New Senior Center At the March 15 Gulfport City Council meeting, Hartsook – the fundraising company the City hired in November to do just that for a new senior center – gave an update on its fundraising efforts. Hartsook Executive Vice President Jason Wood said the company’s fundraising efforts, which the City hopes will raise between $4.5 million and $5 million, include asking AARP for a $1 million donation and a possible naming rights deal with another large donor. Those naming rights, Wood said, would also entail a potential honorary chairmanship title for the donor. “Our hope is to have that committed by the end of April,” Wood said. Hartsook’s efforts focus on raising private funds for a new $11.6 million center. When the City hired Hartsook five months ago, it also hired two other firms to raise the money for the new senior center. The City pays Hartsook

While participants go through the motions, Harris wanders the mats, tossing treats and setting goat goodies on people’s backs while they do child’s pose and tabletop. Goats naturally jump on things, and that includes people’s backs, which Harris describes as “a little massage.” The main issue is that the goats aren’t potty trained and they tend to relieve themselves every 15 min-

Opinion: Fear=Vitriol
Letters From Your Neighbor By Ian O’Hara
Vitriol has gotten worse towards politicians in the last few years. Why? Well here are a few reasons: • People’s distrust of the establishment • The anti-establishment movement within both extremes of the political parties • Democratic party rhetoric and propaganda • Republican party rhetoric and propaganda • Media silos • The inability to compromise • The asymmetrical moralism of politics • The experience of dynastic powers in political culture • The removal of the guards that existed in the 20th century • The adoption of anarchy as a political state • Post-modernist concepts within the Democratic party structure • The chronic dystopic view of the future • Only experiencing the political polarities • The religiousness in politics on the left • Constituents’ political realignment • The existence of social media • The anti-intellectual movement within the Republican party • The hypocrisy within the Democratic parties’ policies • The unwillingness to understand science, or just disavowing science as a whole • Futurism as a reality • The pandemic • Loss of respective expertise • The loss of respective authority • The unwillingness to recognize consequences of policies, good, bad, or indifferent • The chronic narcissism within our population as well as the political culture • The perception of economic disparity • Culture wars • The change of discourse in language of politics • The feeling that government is not listening or responding • Devaluing public service by using the word, “job” • Fear I’ll discuss these issues in later columns. All these ideas combined are a threat to each other and create vitriol within the political culture we are experiencing now. This is not new, just different. This occurred in 1829 with the realignment of the political parties and the election of Andrew Jackson; in the 1860s with the Civil War; in the 1930s with the Depression; and in the 1960s with the civil rights and the anti-war movements. What the above dates have in common are a population that is tired, anxious, and angry. This is not our existential threat; this is a small buildup of cultural, political, psychological, and economic factors. We are in the midst of a great change in the way that we communicate, and in the way we get information, as well as the psychological factors that go along with the aforementioned reasons. Everyone has agency (a top-down power structure) in America, and I don’t believe that each side recognizes that. What goes along with anxiety and anger is the concept of emotional collectivism. This is our existential threat. We can only improve the world through individual action, not through group action or governmental force. Humans are slow to change, and change begets fear. And fear begets vitriol and chaos. Sincerely. Your neighbor, Ian O’Hara

Potential human companions must own their own home – no condos – to bring home this super-good boy.

He has it down pat – but he’d love to do it in a furr-ever home (he’s sort of fluffy, so we couldn’t resist the overdone play on words.) If your life needs more fur and laser pointers, this kitten can solve that problem.

Seven Questions: Sheba Queen of the Night
stages and it brings me so much joy to share art with others.
Pinup Model Celebrates Curves and Burlesque By Abby Baker
You identify as a curvy pinup model? Would you say curves rule this type of modeling? I think pinup - like burlesque - celebrates women of all shapes and sizes. I am proud of being a curvy pinup and embrace it through this art form.
GN: What is burlesque? SQ: Burlesque began in the 17th century, deriving from the Italian word ‘burlesco’ and ‘burla’ meaning a joke or mockery. A resurgence of the art form started in New York around 2008 and it is now a popular form of entertainment that can be seen in almost every city and state all over the world. How did you get into burlesque? My first time seeing a burlesque show was on a visit to New York at the Slipper Room in 2009. I was mesmerized by the performances. When I got back to San Francisco, I began taking classes and performing under my show name, Sheba Queen of the Night. The feminist nature of the art form is why I fell in love with it, and what moves me most about the art today.
SHEBA QUEEN OF THE NIGHT
It’s not uncommon to see burlesque performer Sheba Queen of the Night in bedazzled corsets and tassel-adorned bras. For Sheba, pinup culture and shimmying on stage are a way of female expression. She got into the game in San Francisco, performed nationally and is now performing, modeling and hosting events full time in St. Petersburg. Her event company, Sheba QOTN Entertainment, produces the fun, funky shows around town, most recently “Flambé Cabaret: A Dinner Theater Experience” at Sea Dog Cantina - Gulfport.
Sheba Queen of the Night is a burlesque performer, sex coach, pinup model, and event producer in Gulfport.
I began producing variety show cabarets in 2009 in the San Francisco Bay area. I have also produced shows in Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe, and Reno. I’ve produced a few showcases around the Tampa Bay area: “Beautiful Anarchy” (a rockabilly showcase), “Seduction Feroce” (a queer cabaret), and “NEO-RAMA” (a pop-up show). I feel at home on
You also work as a sex coach. I work with individuals and couples on relationships, dating, sexuality, empowerment, and body-positivity coaching. I also lead workshops at the St. Pete Retreat where we lead circles and classes around sexuality and empowerment. Why do you enjoy it? I was a part of a movement called VDAY/”The Vagina Monologues” for 11 years and it was a play that encouraged women to be in their power and in their voices. The monologues were stories about women’s experiences in their bodies and their sexuality. It led me to want to hold more spaces around healing and transformation for people and their sexuality. I love to help people find their voice and be in their body. They find a deeper connection to themselves and discover ways to love themselves more. To learn more about Sheba and her events visit shebaqueenofthenight. com
How would you describe your performance style? I consider myself a neo-burlesque performer. I adore the glitz and glamour. My acts may share my feminist and body-positivity views, and can be comedic at times. Growing up watching musicals, I fell in love with theater at an early age and spent a lot of time in casinos watching acrobatic performances, circus shows, and showgirls covered in rhinestones and feathers. It’s no surprise I fell in love with entertainment. When did you start Sheba QOTN Entertainment? What made you want to start?

food Dirty Little Secret
Laundromat-Themed Speakeasy Serves Cuban Plates, Cocktails A glance into Dirty Laundry in downtown St. Petersburg and one might think it’s a small self-wash laundromat with a coffee counter and payphone. That’s until the phone rings. Dirty Laundry is a bar, lounge, and restaurant speakeasy at 1742 Central Ave. that opened its doors in November, 2020. The initial entrance room sports a checkered floor, washing machines and dryers accompanied by a C-shaped bar that offers coffee and sandwiches. At night (and starting at noon on the weekends) the speakeasy serves bottles, cocktails, and Cuban plates. Despite the downtown spot making a splash on social media, I tried to absorb zero information on the details, aside from the fact that it operates as a speakeasy – I wanted to see if I could figure out how to get inside. Nearby speakeasies such as The Saint (also on Central Avenue) can be accessed by simply checking the Instagram page for a daily password, and I assumed this may be the case. However, Dirty Laundry makes its visitors work a tad harder. Occasionally the payphone rings

and gives instructions on how to access the parallel side of the lounge, a room lit with neon signs and a completely separate, alcohol-based menu. There’s also a separate outdoor patio for those who brave the dark side. I’ll leave out the nitty-gritty on how to access the secret room, which is not at all obvious until you see it in action. On the laundromat side, I ordered

a café con leche and their Lechon Sandwich at the bar. With a theme centered around other people’s dirty clothes, I was skeptical about the food being the draw, but the Dirty Laundry kitchen proved me wrong. The café con leche was no Ybor City cup, but it did the trick. There were also non-dairy options, cold brew, matcha, kombucha, and a rundown of nonalcoholic sips. Really, I was in it for the sandwich. The Lechon Sandwich, a Cuban fare favorite, was a pressed, melted mix of mojo pork, pickled red onions, and Swiss cheese, held together with bread from La Segunda Bakery. La Segunda, famous for Cuban bread and pastries in Tampa, opened a St. Petersburg location earlier this month. Their bread brings the extra-authentic edge to the Central Avenue menu. As for the row of washing machines, they’re not open for public use despite spinning with actual clothing items every so often. Paired with aging washing machines - a prop that many visitors pose for photos with - soap dispensers, and rolling carts, you almost forget that it’s all a mirage.

Marina Mullins, New Port Richey “Living in Brooklyn and I’m a film music producer.”
Annie Hambach, Holiday “It’s not so far-fetched; well, it kind of is financially. I’d live in a $3 million condo high rise and there would be bridges that can easily accommodate all the traffic. That’s the far-fetched part. Also I’m independently wealthy and not working.”
Tabitha Martin, Pinellas Park “I’d live in Tuscany on a vineyard married to my hot husband. We have two children and I work as a sommelier at a bougie restaurant in Florence. I want it to be me.”
