Black Is Beautiful Empowerment and the Art of Nick Davis

For St. Petersburg artist Nick Davis, looking someone dead in the eyes can be an anxiety provoking, intense experience.

Instead, he recreates it.

“I wake up drawing and I go to sleep drawing,” 30-yearold Davis said. “Dealing with anxiety, I never liked to get my hands dirty, so I stick to digital art.”

Davis creates structured silhouettes of Black women, men and children; bright colors and looming eyes characterize his series, Black is Beautiful, a testament to community and empowerment.

Making Connections

Black is Beautiful is a collection of strangers Davis has dreamed of, along with recognizable Black figures, elegant with deep, dark complexions and ornate garments. He pairs his portraits with quotes from icons like Michelle Obama, Tyler the Creator and Aretha Franklin.

“I believe people can see themselves in the quotes,” Davis said. “And the eyes.”

He began the series in July of 2019, and was selling his work for $5 a print.

Davis paired this work with a quote from Serena Williams: “I love who I am, and I encourage other people to love and embrace who they are. But it definitely wasn’t easy – it took me a while.”

Dear Editor: As [Gulfport] City Council saw fit to bring the subject up from the dais (again) on Tuesday, March 16, I thought it may be worthwhile to redirect the conversation.

If you are more concerned about people spreading the message the “n-word” is racist, vile and inappropriate to use or condone the usage of in any way, shape or form (spoiler alert: This is not breaking news to most people) rather than being horrified at the long history and our deeply present racism in this country and this community – you’re concerned about the wrong thing.

Your words have meaning.

Choose what publicly angers you wisely.

Racism is wrong. Using the n-word today, five years ago, or 50 years ago is wrong. Let’s focus on repairing the damage that has already been done, and not get distracted by anything, or anyone, else. – Kate Bauer-Jones

Brown Owes the Community an Apology Dear Editor: Christine Anne Brown said, “Never in the history of Gulfport has there been such a nasty, nasty, hate-filled campaign...”

I beg to differ. There have been elections in Gulfport which have been just as down and dirty. Remember Councilmember Michele King? Perhaps 2007 wasn’t a prob-

lem because Christine Anne Brown wasn’t on the receiving end of the nastiness.

During the same time frame, then-Mayor Mike Yakes was running for re-election. I was shocked to see a campaign sign – in Christine Brown’s yard – proclaiming, “Dump Yakes.” This wasn’t a good look for someone who wanted to represent our town, and potentially work with that very mayor. It didn’t give me a good impression of Ms. Brown then, either.

In this recent election, Christine Brown was re-elected with just over 52% of the vote. I’m not sure that result should embolden Ms. Brown. To me, the results say that the voters of Gulfport are dissatisfied with Ms. Brown’s representation.

The rant that was delivered during the March 16, 2021 council meeting reflects more on Christine Anne Brown than anyone. I’m guessing there were many folks in Gulfport who had no idea about any conflicts or mudslinging that was brought upon Ms. Brown and her family during this recent election. While I am sure it was frightening and upsetting, a council meeting is no place to air election grievances against a fellow council person.

It is also no place for Mayor Henderson or councilmembers to defend Ms. Brown – or anyone on council – for what was assumed to be dirty election maneuverings.

majority of voters in 2020. In my opinion, the COVID-19 challenges of the past year have put Ms. Thanos at a disadvantage on council. She remains an outsider, even though she continues to have the support of voters who elected her.

It is my wish that an extra effort be made to be respectful to Ms. Thanos. She is putting forth ideas from the community that she represents and who she is listening to.

All of you on council, Mayor Henderson, City Manager O’Reilly – every one of you – is expected to work for the citizens of Gulfport, not to snipe at each other about real or imagined rumors and election shenanigans.

The March 16 Gulfport City Council meeting began with swearing in recently re-elected city councilmembers Christine Brown, Ward 2, and Michael Fridovich, Ward 4; Councilmember April Thanos was appointed vice-mayor for the year per the usual ward-to-ward rotation. The meeting proceeded routinely as council discussed new rules for council meetings and appointments to local boards, until Brown, in her closing statement, read a prewritten speech about what she claims were attacks on her family during the recent election by her opponent Mike Bauer. She also asserted that Thanos not only recruited Bauer to run against her, but also recruited one of Fridovich’s recent opponents, and possibly one to unseat Councilmember Paul Ray next year.

Thanos laughed at this remark, causing Brown to pause and say, “You’re laughing?”

“Yes. It’s not true,” Thanos said, before allowing Brown to finish her speech. Thanos denied the accusations, but admitted that she does want to see some change on the makeup of city council.

Overheard at the March 16 Gulfport City Council Meeting “In traveling up and down the coast, I have yet to find a city where I can’t use a bathroom when I need a bathroom, and for our Casino bathrooms to open at whatever it is, 8 or 7, I’ve not found that to be true.

“A couple years ago, the code enforcement department took a case before the special magistrate regarding a derelict RV on 30th Avenue, and to my knowledge that RV is still there and it’s just racking

On Wednesday, March 17, the Gabber asked Ray who had told him Thanos allegedly found someone to run against him in the 2022 race for Gulfport City Council Ward 3 election. He said it was not one person, “but six” who had told him Thanos was recruiting opposition against him, but he would not reveal their names.

“I don’t want to throw someone under the bus like that,” he said.

At council, Thanos denied Brown’s accusation that she was working behind the scenes to undermine her fellow councilmembers, but said, “Yes, I would like people to change on this council because I think that things aren’t being addressed, and that’s a democratic thing to do!”

“You don’t do it by destroying family,” Brown said.

“I did not try to destroy your family,” Thanos said. “I didn’t share anything to destroy your family.

New Council Rules Proposed Council discussed a new set of rules and policies for city council, in and out of meetings. According to the proposed changes, councilmembers will be forbidden from promoting any political candidate during a meeting. While this has been a general guideline at the council, Thanos requested it be made official.

The other potential change would require that when a councilmember makes a request for information, the city manager must provide copies of that information to all other councilmembers. If the time needed for city staff to prepare the information exceeds two hours, two other councilmembers must approve the request.

Council will vote on these measures at a later date.

New Appointments Council discussed the reappointment of several municipal board members whose terms are expiring. Joe Szemer, Lisa Julian and

Kelly Wright have been nominated to retain their spots on the Board of Adjustment for two more years, as have Robert Craig, Jeri Reed and Suzanne Szul on the Planning and Zoning Board. Council plans to retain Biff Lagan in his spot on the Police Pension Board for four more years. Thanos made note that Dianne Griffith will be moving away and therefore resigning her position on the Planning and Zoning Board, and that she will make a nomination for replacement soon.

Council Rejects Dock Extension Appeal Joni McGurk spoke before the council appealing a decision by the Board of Adjustment that denied her request to build a floating dock alongside an existing standing dock. After nearly 30 minutes of deliberation, council voted to reject the appeal.

“One of the hardships for this, if I can speak for us as a council, is that it’s not our job to rehear and determine whether we disagree with the board,” Henderson said.

“It’s our job to determine if the board did their job correctly, which ends up disappointing people on a regular basis.”

Council then discussed the possibility of changing the appeals process so that BOA appeals are heard by a circuit court instead of city council.

Gulfport Councilmember Q&A Debuts

The Public Forum Gives Residents a New Way to Reach Their Representatives

Gulfport residents may have a new way to connect with their city councilmemebers.

Council’s newest outreach endeavor, Q & A with a Gulfport Councilmember, opens up an in-person forum for residents to ask questions and express concerns outside of city hall.

Initiated by Ward I Councilmember April Thanos in a collaboration with the Gulfport Merchants Chamber, the lineup of councilmembers is still to be determined. However, Thanos took the lead on Tuesday, March 16 at a table outside the Gulfport Welcome Center at 3101 Beach Blvd. S.

“I’ll definitely do it again if another councilmember doesn’t,” Thanos said. “I’m committed to it.”

According to City Manager Jim O’Reilly, the concept’s ultimate goal is to connect more Gulfport residents to their representatives.

“I will be participating at some point in time, but not at this moment,” Ward 4 Councilmember Michael Fridovich said.

The event is slated for every third Tuesday, and in last week’s debut, Thanos was available from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m., during the hustle and bustle of the Tuesday Fresh Market.

“We had a few concerns and a few people with general questions,” Thanos said.

Here’s What We Heard One resident had a concern that the leaf blowers used in Clymer

Park were redistributing the debris into neighborhoods.

Thanos made a note to see if the city’s Parks Department could use a more “vacuum-like” machine when leaf blowing.

There were some unhappy comments about the lack of parking on Beach Boulevard, and the height and size of some buildings being considered at past council meetings.

Most notably, a Gulfport resident brought up the distribution of the 600 vaccines offered in a popup at Town Shores, a 55-plus local community.

“To them, it seemed unfair to give them to one area and not another, or to focus on one ward versus another,” Thanos said. “They feel if we offer a vaccine, we should offer it equally to the community.”

The next Q & A is planned for Tuesday, April 15 with the councilmember to be determined.

O’Maddys Street Party Brings Crowds, Money for Little League

“I loved seeing people’s smiles and happy faces all day,” O’Maddy’s owner Maddy Guenther said. “It was great to see the support on such a beautiful day.”

O’Maddy’s Bar & Grille in Gulfport carried on its St. Patrick’s Day tradition of daytime drinking, music and corned beef and cabbage at their Waterfront Street Party on Wednesday, March 17.

but I thought it was perfect.”

Guenther may have been referring to the many maskless patrons of the festivities, though Guenther explained that organizers did supply masks and encourage their use.

Workers checked temperatures and face coverings at two checkpoint entrances to the event, but once inside, mask-wearing was scarce.

“I know we were giving away masks and selling masks,” Guenther said.

The annual event, which is a fundraiser, did bring a major windfall for Gulfport Little League. According to Guenther, they raised $5,800.

“I loved seeing people’s smiles and happy faces all day,” Guenther said. “It was great to see the support.”

She also intimated that Ms. Thanos was out of line recruiting someone to run against her. Really? I was under the impression a little competition is good for, and part of, the democratic process.

Where to start? First April has consistently stated she did not provide the article to the blogger. No proof has been forthcoming and in fact Christine told the Gabber that she does not have any proof. Therein lies the slanderous lie perpetrated by Councilwoman Brown that inherently accuses April of being a liar! In addition, Christine and her husband sat for the interview in which her husband used the “N….” word with Christine condoning his behavior. So if there is any backlash to the article, it is on them and their words, which are in the public arena. You would think she would like to put this behind her and not persist in reminding the citizens of Gulfport about it. Guess lobbing false accusations toward Ms. Thanos was more important.

As to recruiting a candidate to run against Christine, as if this were an egregious act, is disingenuous at best.

One would hope if you are going to

run for office you would not be so thin skinned as to disparage someone for recruiting competition. Is this not part of the democratic process?

To use the platform of the city council to air disgruntled feelings and put forth unsupported accusations against a fellow councilwoman was unprofessional, embarrassing and a misuse of our city government platform.

That no one stopped the rant does not reflect well on the councilmembers who sat by and let her continue.

Council Works for the People Dear Editor: Regardless of who one votes for or not in an election in Gulfport, once the candidate is sworn into office, they are an employee of the City of Gulfport. Their salary, however large or small, is paid by the taxpayers. We, the taxpayers, are not your employees rather you are our employees. You are hired to work for the taxpayers and res-

idents – to do the people’s work and attend to city business. You are not hired to air personal grievances and fight with other members of the dais as though you are middle schoolers on the playground – not on our time and not on our dime. Do any of you think that your employer – or any employer – would approve of such in the workplace?

Mayor Henderson, Vice Mayor Thanos, Councilmembers Brown, Ray and Fridovich, I don’t care who said what or who blamed whom, what happened at the end of the last council meeting on March 16 and on February 2, as well as other times throughout the past year, breaks the very rules that you, yourselves, have written for meeting decorum: “all members of council shall display the utmost courtesy to each other.” There are no winners when such decorum is not upheld, there are only losers, the biggest being the people.

The city council – every member – that participated in the despicable behavior of March 16, and those who did nothing to stop it, owe the taxpayers/residents an apology! Let us hope that we never witness such again and that the good name of Gulfport, Florida is never again besmirched as it was! – M. Tober, Gulfport

Pinellas County Scholarship Expands Due to Pandemic Hardships

The College Fund of Pinellas County is increasing scholarship funds and decreasing GPA requirements for applicants.

A recent decline in applications to the The College Fund of Pinellas County has caused an increase in awarded money, and a reduction in application requirements.

That’s good news for Pinellas students looking for college funding.

“We understand that the financial pressures on today’s college students have never been greater,” said Fund President Britt Hart. “It’s reflected in the quantity of our scholarship applications and in the tough circumstances our applicants are sharing with us.”

Annual assistance per student increased from $1,000 to $1,200 annually. Currently just 57 Pinellas County residents receive benefits, totaling $49,880 for Fall 2020 – Spring 2021 school year.

“We’re trying to remain nimble in serving our students in the best ways we can,” Hart said.

Applicants previously required a high school grade point average of 3.0. The new minimum is 2.5.

Blessing the Fleet

BCYC Members Hope for ‘Fair Winds, Favorable Seas’ Despite particularly brisk winds and cooler weather, the sailing was smooth during Boca Ciega Yacht Club’s annual blessing of the fleet on Sunday, March 21. The club hosts the annual non-denominational event on Williams Pier in Gulfport to ensure safe journeys on water for each blessed vessel.

“It’s just something we do every year,” he said. “People like to keep their boats blessed and it’s kind of fun to get on the water.”

More than 40 boats lined up in front of Williams Pier at 10 a.m. BCYC member Joye Swisher began the ceremony with an invocation to the boats and conducted the blessings.

“Bless the skippers and the crew of [boat name]. Along with all that sail out with them, may they experience fair winds, favorable seas and enjoy a safe journey home,” Swisher said into a walkie talkie that was transmitted to channel 72.

O’Connor said that the club also arranges dry dock blessings for boats that are “on the hard,” or out of the water.

While blessings are non-denominational, boaters can request a specific blessing to match their beliefs.

“It’s an honor to do it and to be a part of it,” Swisher said. “Yacht clubs all over the world do a blessing of the fleet and it’s usually at the beginning of spring.”

COVID-19 lent to a bit of a debate over how to promote this year’s blessing.

“Once you’re on your boat, everybody is separated by their boat in the water between. So it’s an extremely socially distanced event,” Jonathan Cornwell, secretary and PR chair for BCYC, said. “We were mainly concerned about the manpower this year – of organizing it as an open, public event.”

According to O’Connor turnout this year was a little less than previous years.

“2020 was a hell of a year,” Cornwell said. “So we kind of feel like the blessings are extra special this year because hopefully it all means that we’re finding our way back to normal.”

Home Rule: The Tallahassee Tussle Heats Up

According to a state representative recently, our local cities are rife with socialism, as is support for home rule.

Some of us wonder if the Republican Party in Tallahassee would be recognizable to conservative thinkers such William F. Buckley and George Will. In fact, the majority of city officials here in Pinellas are Republicans, they support home rule, and are as miffed as Buckley would be at that comment and his party’s attack of home rule.

What happened to the oft-quoted conservative tenet that “the government closest to the people serves the people best”?

What is “home rule” and “state preemption?”

Home rule was part of the state’s 1968 constitutional revision passed by the people: “Municipalities shall have governmental, corporate and proprietary powers to enable them to conduct municipal government, perform municipal functions and render municipal services, and may exercise power for municipal purposes except as otherwise provided by law.” (Article VIII, Section 2(b)).

This session the Florida League of Cities is tracking 25 bills that aim to curtail this constitutional power by preempting local governments and another 11 that aim to impose mandates, some unfunded, on local cities.

While these bills run the gamut, they have one quality in common: They go to the extreme.

For example, an energy bill would keep cities from passing even non-binding resolutions related to clean or renewable energy (HB919).

A voter protection bill would prohibit counties from allowing voters to deposit their ballots in secure ballot drop boxes (SB90). A third limits impact fee increases for new developments, but does so in a way that prevents cities from using these fees to equip firefighters, EMS and police with the equipment and vehicles they need to for an increasing population caused by new development (HB 337). Another prohibits cities from upholding design and aesthetic ordinances (HB55).

And if the state House has its way, any city choosing to change its solid waste contract will now have a hefty state-ordered penalty for switching garbage companies (HB31).

Some of these are a response to a local government behaving badly. In others, it’s corporate industry lobbying for preemption because it’s easier to deal with the state than to go to every county. Others appear to be sweetheart deals for legislators’ personal businesses. Some preemptions truly make sense – our aquifers do not know municipal boundaries, and continuity for statewide infrastructure is common sense – but even this is taken to the extreme.

Most often the best solution needs to be crafted with a scalpel, not a mallet. Unfortunately, with the contempt expressed for our cities and the shortlived, fast-paced sessions in Florida, these nuanced solutions are not likely to come from our state legislators.

Instead we get state overreach that weakens our cities.

There are solutions to this madness. The first begins at the ballot

box – elect people who do not want to destroy home rule. The second are policy solutions to rein in Tallahassee. Integrity Florida – a nonpartisan research institute and watchdog for public corruption – suggests some changes that are common in other arenas: • Require two-thirds or super-majority vote for passage of legislation preempting local government authority (similar to what is required for local unfunded mandates).

• Establish by rule or law a single-subject requirement for preemption legislation.

• Establish a sunset review provision for preemptions that automatically repeals a preemption on a certain date unless the legislature affirmatively acts to renew it.

These policy suggestions are not likely to get off the ground anytime soon. But, maybe it’s time we went on the offensive and advocated for protections to individual city character and local autonomy.

As we head into the second half of session, I’ll be fighting with others across the state against one-sizefits-all policies that yield cookie-cutter cities and dysfunctional policies.

crime Woman Charged with Trafficking Minors

One of the Victims is a Runaway from Sarasota County Sunday, March 14, St. Petersburg Police charged Leslie Reio, 24, with trafficking minors out of a St. Petersburg hotel room.

Police arrested Reio at Bayway Inn, 4400 34th St. S. around 1:30 a.m.

While many details remain unknown, detectives claim Reio would take profit from the two minors after soliciting them for sexual acts.

Local police are working with the federal investigators in this case.

Reio posted sexual advertisements online for the victims, police said, one of whom is known to be a runaway from Sarasota County.

“We’ve gotten a lot of interest in this case, but it is an ongoing investigation,” St. Petersburg Police Public Information Officer Yolanda Fernandez told the

Nick Davis is the digital artist in St. Petersburg behind the Black is Beautiful series. “I want to show a new level of love,” Davis said.

Not even six months later Davis was recognized as Artist of the Week on BET Air Instagram, he was featured on PBS Arts Plus and has over 20,000 Instagram followers.

But it took Davis time and self discovery to get to a point of positivity through creation.

Five years ago Davis was unable to work due to epileptic seizures. He

was home, and struggling with demons beyond his health.

“I’ve dealt with drug problems,” Davis said. “It’s still a struggle being sober, but this has helped me move on.”

The rise in his online presence came with a change in his ability to process social anxiety.

“At first, it was really overwhelm-

ing,” Davis said. “I started with like 700 followers, and the response I have now was a lot more than I was expecting. I’ve learned to just post my art and log off.”

Now, with thousands of social media followers watching, Davis continues to create digital portraits for Black is Beautiful.

“Drawing is my way of keeping sane; it’s just what I do for right now,” Davis said.

The next step, Davis hopes, will be bigger. The artist wants to eventually to put down roots and open his own studio in St. Pete.

“I did want to leave this area when everything started to take off,” Davis said. “[But] if I leave, I’m leaving my community. I have to stay here and be the one to take the needed steps for change.”

For Davis, that means supporting the arts, especially for Black children.

“In our community, a lot of children are forced into football, sports – and anything outside of that is considered bad,” Davis said. “I want to open up opportunities for people to express themselves.”

Years ago, Davis was that kid. He was kicked out of middle school for bad behavior and failed his senior year of high school.

Lewis, Harriet “Rikki,” 83, passed away on March 14 of cancer at Largo Medical Center, Florida. She is survived by her brother, Jerry Lewis, and his wife, Meredith Ann Belkov; niece and nephew, Lisa Lynch and Steven Lewis and their children. Rikki was born and raised in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, graduated from Brooklyn College and was a member of MENSA. A New York City elementary school teacher, she also taught at a U.S. Air Force base in Germany for two years. After retirement, she settled in Gulfport, where she was an artist and acted in local theater productions.

She founded and operated Silver Threads, that organized and hosted professional and social events for older lesbians. Rikki was classy, sassy and smart. Friends remember her as a fashionable “New Yawker” who celebrated life and enjoyed dessert.

Celebration of Life Friends and family of Thomas Goodall are invited to a Celebration of Life for him on April 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pavilion 6 on Gulfport Beach.

Newman, Thomas Franklin, 88, formerly of St. Petersburg, passed away peacefully January 15, 2021 in Jacksonville, FL. Born 1932 in Willoughby, Ohio, he was the son of the late James Glover Newman and Lucille Margaret Fox, and grandson of Thomas F. Newman, founder of Cleveland & Buffalo Transit Line. He attended Admiral Farragut Academy, Florida Southern College, served in the U.S. Navy on the Archerfish SS311 in Key West, worked as a trust officer for Landmark Union Trust and

started his own real estate office in Treasure Island. After moving to Jacksonville, he worked for Watson Realty, later starting his own firm, Jaguar Realty. He loved boating; racing power boats in the Hurricane Offshore Classics, Boca Ciega Bay, Vina Del Mar, and Lake Maggiore races in St. Pete. At one point he taught a 10th grade history class while teachers were on strike and placed in a boat race. His class gave him an identical trophy inscribed “We won with Mr. Tom Newman.”

After a power boat racing accident in an OB tunnel hull (one of three he ordered, built from plywood) he started sailboat racing. He and his son sailed with Walter Cronkite and Charlie Morgan after watching the launch of the “Heritage” sailboat for the America’s Cup Challenge in late 60s. Tom was a lefty and a giving, big-hearted man with a unique sense of humor and a huge love for all animals. After retiring, he and his wife took over a pet-sitting business! Survivors include his son James (and wife Rebecca), and daughter Carrye of St. Pete; wife Doris Keenan (married 1976) and he adopted her daughters Cynthia and Kimberly; two grandchildren of Jacksonville, and sibling Joyce H. Brock, TN. Predeceased by first wife Joan Petteway, siblings Harl Clark and Maechel “Mike” Patterson. His last request to his son was for one more boat ride, which he received in spirit with Jim, Carrye and Becky on January 23, 2021, to lay a memorial wreath in the Gulf of Mexico out from the Don CeSar. Fair winds and a following sea, Dad.
