Juneteenth at Last It’s only the beginning, but Gulfport showed pride at its Juneteenth celebration with predominantly Black vendors and strong community ties.

The holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking the day that news finally reached one of the last enslaved communities in Galveston, Texas in 1865. On Saturday, June 19 Gulfport held the first official celebration of Juneteenth, co-hosted by the city and Gulfport Kiwanis Club.

The grass behind the Gulfport Recreation Center was full of vendors and volunteers, and Marissa Stewart-Dix, President of the Gulfport Kiwanis Club, is to thank for the new event.

“I think we’re moving past certain attitudes, and I like to look to the future,” Stewart-Dix said.

The celebration featured vendors including St. Petersburg’s Blackowned and sustainably sourced Southside Fresh Market, as well as Truelight #6 Masonic Lodge and the Gulfport Lions Club, among others.

“The smiles on the kids’ faces is what did it for me; they are the focus,” Stewart-Dix said. “We look forward to

This week, the Gabber introduces a nine-part retrospective about school integration in Gulfport and surrounding communities. Some of our readers may wonder why we felt compelled to write about events that, to them, feel far removed from their day-to-day lives.

The short answer: It’s not that far removed from everyone’s lives, and a newspaper must report the news, but also give it context. That’s what this series does: It gives us context for things we see happening today. That context isn’t pleasant to learn, but it’s worse for those who have lived it. Over the next two months, readers will face some uncomfortable truths about how our history still guides our present.

Things are still not equal. It’s not our job, as a newspaper, to tell you how you can make things better. Our job is to print the news and, as I said, offer context.

This series will examine how Florida’s history of segregated schools still impacts how we function as a community. We’ll look at how we had to be forced to educate Black students and the lower standards that resulted, and also how some of our schools bear the names of those who led – and fought – the charge for change.

It is our hope that, after reading the series, those of us who have the privilege of never being told we couldn’t attend a white-only school or finish our high school education because of our race will come to a better understanding of how choices made 150, 100 or 50 years ago still drive inequality in how we teach our Black children and what opportunities don’t open up to Black Floridians because of it.

voices Time to Step It Up a Notch Dear Editor: There has been talk at the last couple of [Gulfport] council meetings about giving city employees bonuses for their work during the COVID pandemic and finding a way to bring the minimum wage for the City of Gulfport employees current and new to $15 per hour. I am not a fan of bonuses as I think they often get eaten up by taxes and in the end not much is left for the employee. I’d rather see them given days off to show the city’s commitment to a work-life balance. As well, I would suggest that the city needs to do a professional salary survey before embarking on wholesale pay increase changes. Why? Some months ago, I fell across an internet site that lists salaries for government employees. It happened to be for Gulfport because I guess I had searched for something else Gulfport. I honestly only looked at a handful of salaries and frankly I was shocked and disgusted by what I saw. The variance in pay between employees with similar responsibilities, in some cases, was shocking.

The disparity between some employees and their manager or director was equally eye opening. I understand that longevity / seniority

plays a role, but the variances really were just too great.

I would strongly urge that before embarking on wholesale salary changes, the city council and city management do the employees a real service and have a professional salary study done. Simply stated, this is a must that companies / organizations should do that truly want to invest in the best people.

With extra funding available through the American Rescue Plan, the cost would perhaps be less impactful. Let’s step it up a notch on the professional playing field and truly invest in the employees for the future. The employees deserve it! If you agree, please consider sending a note to mayorandcity-

teenth’ and they asked us if there were celebrations in the area,” Stewart-Dix said. “I saw a light bulb go off over my husband’s head.”

With no public Juneteenth events they could name, the two decided to change the local agenda.

In June of this year, the Gulfport Kiwanis Club presented a request at a Gulfport Council meeting to use city property for the first ever Juneteenth celebration, and it was a unanimous yes from community leaders.

City officials and some councilmembers attended, along with a hefty turnout of families.

“It’s only going to get bigger and better,” said David Flack, a volunteer with the Kiwanis Club and other Gulfport community groups.

“Just goes to show that Gulfport wants to show change and welcome everyone to the table.”

Council Talks Money, Noise

Budget Discussions and the Noise Ordinance Debate Continue in Gulfport At the June 15 meeting, Gulfport City Council meeting sped through most of the agenda items in just 30 minutes before pivoting into a lengthy discussion on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. This meeting will be the last for over a month, as council agreed to not meet on the usual date of July 6, and will next meet July 20.

LGBTQ Resource Center Gets $5k At the start of the June 15 council meeting, Councilmember Paul Ray presented a check for $5,032 to LGBTQ Resource Center Board President Susan Gore, money raised by the recent Gulfport Pride event on May 29.

“This city is extraordinary. I just wanted to thank each of the councilmembers, Mayor Sam, Jim O’Reilly, everyone who helps support the LGBTQ Resource Center – thank you from the bottom of our heart,” Gore said, accepting the check.

The proposal lost in a 2-3 vote on June 1, but Councilmember April Thanos, after seeing the petition, said she would be willing to reverse her earlier “no” vote now that other restaurants had been consulted.

The current noise ordinance sets the maximum noise amount at 65 decibels, and drops to 55 at 11 p.m., but the temporary change would raise the limit to 75 decibels for most of the day, but drop to 55 at 10 p.m., an hour earlier. This shift would serve as a compromise

between restaurant owners and musicians who have complained about having police called for even lower-volume performances, and local residents who have complained about loud music being played late into the evening.

Councilmembers Ray and Christine Brown retained their “no” votes, with Ray insisting that bars and musicians are too loud already.

“I still don’t see that there’s a viable reason to have to raise it even higher….I’ve been to every one of the restaurants, I’ve been to every

Overheard at the June 15 Gulfport City Council Meeting “In regards to the Boca Ciega Yacht Club lease discussions, the city attorney and I have been meeting with the BCYC group… You also have a letter on record that basically asked them to be out of the property by June 30; we’d ask that you take formal action this evening… to allow that to sunset, leaving the city attorney and I to continue work with them.” – City Manager Jim O’Reilly to Mayor Sam Henderson. Henderson led a brief consensus vote, which passed, formally suspending the earlier BCYC eviction.

Council Continues Budget Discussion After quickly approving a $31,895 repair of the Gulfport Casino’s dock, and an update to the city’s pension plan increasing the required distribution age from 70 and a half to 72, council moved on to a lengthy discussion of the coming year’s fiscal budget.

The discussion was the fourth in as many meetings on the upcoming budget, which needed a sizable overhaul to account for the losses in revenue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the last meeting, the majority of the budget discussion revolved around the $5,186,383 in federal money Gulfport is set to receive as part of the American Recovery Act, with each councilmember listing projects they’d like to see funded; several members had more ideas to add at this meeting as well.

Student of the Month: Qwynn Foster

One year ago, Qwynn Foster had just finished his sophomore year at Gibbs High School, but found himself without a place to stay after a bad spat with the grandmother he’d been living with.

“Honestly, I had a lot of places where I as a person needed to grow, and that just seemed like the wake up call that I needed,” he explains, looking back on that night.

Finding a bed at his aunt’s house, Foster spent the night asking himself serious questions about what he wanted to do with his life, and who he hoped to become.

The next day, he called his school’s counselor and told her he’d be graduating a year early.

One year later, he’s met that deadline and more. Donning his cap at 17, he’ll be heading off to Vanderbilt University in the fall to study neurology.

College, Pinellas Technical College and Florida Virtual school, all at the same time.

“I actually got into a little struggle with the district, because I had too many college classes,” Foster said, laughing. “I didn’t know it was possible!”

In his sophomore year, he took 16 courses at once. Some days, his first class would start at 7 a.m., and his last would end at 10 p.m.

“People ask me like, ‘How was sophomore year?’ and I tell them I don’t really remember sophomore year. It was really like a fever dream.”

In spite of his busy schedule, he says he never felt out of place among his peers, or like he was accomplishing anything out of the ordinary.

“I just did what I felt was necessary for my life,” he said. “Like, I

still was in lots of clubs and socialized with lots of people.”

“Lots” may be an understatement. Foster was elected president of student government, was social media manager for Future Business Leaders of America, chief officer of SADD, was in National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, was the student representative for the BETA Advisory Board, and competed on the wrestling team. He also writes poetry.

When it came time to give out superlatives this year, Foster won “most involved.”

He also knows that he didn’t make it this far alone, and gives special thanks to the women in his life, like his computer science teacher, Jennifer Tuazon.

“Ms. Tuazon is like a mother,” said Foster. “Since I have known her she has been one of my biggest supporters, through everything.... I cannot say that I did not have some low points, especially during this year. But Ms. Tuazon

was always there to not only support me, but more importantly, tell me when I was wrong, and how I can do better.”

His other biggest supporter has been his great-grandmother, Johnnie May Woods, who helped raise him from a young age, and who passed away earlier this year.

“She was a fireball of a woman. She was everything that you could honestly imagine a very southern, spirited Black woman to be. She was powerful, she was opinionated, she could cook,” he said, laughing. “Just the amount of unwavering support from those two women are literally why I am here today.”

He also wants to give special thanks to his grandmother Rhonda, who he is living with again, a year after her show of tough love pushed him down this path.

“I feel like had she not kicked me out, I wouldn’t have gone through the growth that I’ve gone through. I most likely wouldn’t be going to Vanderbilt,” he said. “It

was really that one moment right there, that really kick-started so much more.”

Q: If you had one piece of advice to give to a freshman, what would it be?

A: Create yourself. I find it weird how people say that we “discover ourselves.” I don’t believe that.

I believe that we create who we want to be; we create our future.

Q: If you could tell everyone reading this one thing, what would it be?

A: If I could tell Gulfport anything, it would be to take time to love those who love you. I feel like so many times we overlook people’s love and their devotion to our future. But if we truly want to escape, you know, the hardships of life and like depression and just sadness, lean into your tribe.

Lean into, you know, the people who love you.

Bogie, Bradley and Busing

The Story of Pinellas County School Integration Fifty years ago, Gulfport residents paid close attention to a lawsuit in Tampa’s federal courthouse. Judge Joseph Lieb spent over five years deciding Bradley v. Board of Public Instruction of Pinellas County as Black families battled the school board to desegregate schools.

Boca Ciega High experienced some desegregation by 1971, but a U.S. Supreme Court decision involving schools in North Carolina changed the tone and approach this process would take, both in Florida and elsewhere in the country. The same school buses once provided to send children to segregated schools would now help integrate schools Anger followed. In Pinellas, “Parents Against Forced Busing” formed to protest the decision. A former Florida governor became its spokesperson and tried to amend the U.S. Constitution to prevent “forced busing.” The chair of the school district

For the next nine weeks, we will remember how the controversy over school busing affected Gulfport and Pinellas County. We’ll start by commemorating a brief period in the mid-1880s when a one-room schoolhouse in South Pinellas became the first and only integrated school for more than 70 years. New Terry Tomalin Campground Opens at Boyd Hill Nature Park A new campground at Boyd Hill Nature Park will honor Terry Tomalin, the popular outdoors editor for the Tampa Bay Times and adjunct professor at USF St. Petersburg, who died of a heart attack in 2016.

At the St. Petersburg City Council meeting on June 3, council celebrated completion of the new Terry Tomalin Campground, the first campground in the city open to individuals. Friends and family members were on hand to speak about Tomalin, and his dedication to getting everyone, especially kids, involved with nature and the outdoors.

“I grew up with stories of his adventures,” said Kai Tomalin, remembering his dad’s tales of backpacking across the Australian deserts, mountain climbing and kayaking the turbulent South Pacific Ocean.

But with all the faraway, exotic travels, Kai said his father always stressed that there were great adventures right here in our own backyard.

“By Odin’s beard, I hear my father every day and I will continue to hear him,” said Kai, “He would be proud to be part of a community that’s making adventure accessible in our city.”

The campground is now accessible to anyone who wants to enjoy nature close to home, as Tomalin, who camped there with his Scout troop, would have wanted.

“When people think of St. Petersburg, they think of our beautiful waterfront, sunny weather and excellent museums,” said Mike Jefferis

of St. Petersburg’s Leisure Services. ”We also have outstanding parks and preserves, and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is an exciting experience to immerse yourself in nature.”

In a press release from the city, Jefferis added, “This is a significant renovation to an area of the preserve that has never been open to the public before. You don’t need to be an environmentalist or have a passion for the outdoors to enjoy these new amenities; curiosity is all you need.”

The first phase of the campground can accommodate 12 primitive tent campsites, each with a picnic table and fire pit. The campsites were created out of natural openings in the wooded area to minimize environmental impact and to maximize camper privacy. A second phase will create 12 additional campsites.

Hammock Hall and Other New Features

Hammock Hall, the new 3,131-square-foot welcome and ed-

ucation center, is at a new, main entrance for the Environmental Studies Area, near the Gate 2 entrance along 31st St. S. A preserve ranger will assist visitors at the new entrance. Hammock Hall will host a variety of programs such as the Climate Change Series, with monthly discussions on its impacts in our area, plus other programs encouraging sustainable practices.

Other projects include two demonstration gardens, and the restoration of wetland areas, in partnership with the Southwest Water Management that will result in a stream running through the preserve.

The City of St. Petersburg will host a dedication ceremony to introduce the new Terry Tomalin Campground and enhancement projects on Saturday, July 3 at 10:30 a.m. at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve Environmental Studies Area, 2900 31st St. S., Gate 1. Gulfport Little League Finishes Spring Season on a High Note As exciting as it is to watch the Rays make another go of it, Gulfport Little League is the real hometown favorite. Its sluggers are coming off a stellar spring season with plenty more to be excited about as the weather heats up.

paint, two new deep freezers and a new refrigerator, and supplied all 60 players with uniforms, bats, helmets, cleats for those who needed them, and sponsor banners.

Mirror Lake Library Launches Animal-themed Summer Program If you love animals and books, Mirror Lake Community Library has the program for you.

The animal-themed summer reading program for youth and adults kicked off Saturday, June 12 with representatives from the library, animal advocacy organization St. Pete PAWS and Healthy St. Pete encouraging readers of all ages.

Library staff prepared several events for the summer reading program in conjunction with the animal theme.

“We just want to encourage folks to participate this summer,” Beth Lindsay, library services manager said.

Readers can join summer reading challenges and activities, such as “Felines and Folktales” – a virtual event featuring staff and volunteers reading their favorite cat-related stories in the kitten room of PetPal Animal Shelter – as well as an under-the-sea-themed virtual escape room, available all summer.

When readers complete challenges, they can enter raffles to win prizes such as a Kindle Fire.

Love in the Driver’s Seat

Columnist Bob Driver’s Partner Recalls Long-Distance Love

To his readers and colleagues, Bob Driver was the deadline-abiding “newspaperman” who, since 1977, reliably submitted his dry-humored opinion columns, “The Driver’s Seat,” for Tampa Bay Newspapers and the now-extinct Clearwater Sun. To Elizabeth Armstrong, he was the final love of her life.

Driver never stopped writing his regular work, which included details of his day-to-day thoughts and earthly musings, until he died of a heart attack on May 18 at the age of 90.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Driver moved to Massachusetts to live close to family in the last couple decades of his life; Armstrong lives in Gulfport with no plans of moving.

They made the long distance work for the last 18 years, regularly visiting each other, traveling on lavish vacations and talking via phone and email at least 10 times a day.

“Moving wasn’t necessary, and we both wanted to be with our families,” Armstrong, an Atlanta native, said.

Even today as she sorts through her emails with Driver, she’s amazed at just how much writing he sent, from little love notes to musings on the nature of life.

“A mutual friend just suggested I call him one day, said he’d just moved up north from Florida and he was bound to be lonely,” Armstrong said. “Well, we talked so much that when I finally met him in person, it felt like I’d known him forever.”

It wasn’t long before references to a “Carolina Moon” started peppering “The Driver’s Seat.”

“I’m in Gulfport visiting my gorgeous sweetheart Carolina Moon.

Up north, where I live, people are either freezing or getting ready to do so. I am searching for a column topic and not having much luck,” Driver wrote in a 2018 column titled “Writing Projects Never Quite Finished.”

Both Driver and Armstrong had been married multiple times, with previous children and previous lives, so the two settled on an unlikely relationship, relying on regular travel up and down the coast, even traveling to England together once.

“I’d had my own adventures long before I met Bob,” Armstrong said, recalling her time living on a boat with no engine in the Miami River.

Driver, who was open about his status as a sober alcoholic, shared his struggles with Armstrong, who also identifies as a recovering alcoholic.

“The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous suggest making a list of persons we have harmed, and then trying to make amends to them all,” Driver wrote in 2017. “I wish I had a nickel for every guilt hangup these suggestions have helped erase down through the years.”

struggles were long past for the two, they bonded over the pain and adventure of those times.

“But we had such a marvelous life together,” Armstrong remembers. “I really think this was the best relationship either of us ever had; and to think, someone just told me to call him out of the blue.”

Newspaperman When the Clearwater Sun production came to a halt in 1989, Driver only paused his work for a brief moment before getting picked up by Tampa Bay Newspapers.

“He was a brilliant writer, and a very good interviewer,” Armstrong said. “I think that’s why he was so good, because he loved getting to know people.”

The Pennsylvania native was born into a traveling family in 1930, with a father who worked in railway construction. Driver moved more than a dozen times before graduating high school.

Maybe it was his tough roots, but Driver approached professional writing with a non-nonsense career drive.

After obtaining a master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University, where he originally began “The Driver’s Seat,” he then worked for the Syracuse Herald-Journal and The Blade, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Ohio newspaper.

Eventually, in the midst of the 1970s, the writer settled in the Pinellas County area, had two children, and served on the Indian Rocks Beach City Commission.

Not much was off limits for his opinion column – from memories of childhood to reflections of the wrongs of the Church of Scientology – and Driver exited his life with more than 1600 columns as part of his legacy. There are countless instances of Armstrong’s alias, Carolina Moon, immortalized in his writings.

“Now there was one fine gal.

If mama had met Carolina, she would have thought way different about women,” Driver wrote in 2018.

Gulfport Art Project Part of Body-Themed Art Walk

Originally coined “Nude Night,” the Gulfport Merchants Chamber is hosting “Body Beautiful” to recognize all physiques and spread positivity for Art Walk on Friday, July 2 from 5-9 p.m. throughout downtown Gulfport.

The fourth quarterly event is less of a theme, and more of a citywide art project.

“It’s campy, it’s sensuous, it’s just fun,” said Brenda McMahon, GMC Art Committee member and gallery owner. “The idea is, we all have a body – why not celebrate it?”

The night of the event, patrons will see form-filled canvases, body jewelry and sculpture that reflects a more naked ideal.

“I’ve painted a bunch of nudes and there’s not really a place to display them – hotels and restaurants can’t show that type of work,” said Lisa Taylor, a GMC member who pushed for the idea. “I loved the idea of giving people a chance to show art with their bodies.”

In addition to the monthly juried art show, there will be four volunteers painted head to toe with body art strolling the streets, a belly dancer and a “sexy” fire performer at the North End Taphouse.

“We ended up allowing 22 because we had such a response.”

Taylor herself created a Frida Kahlo-inspired female bust, titled simply “Frida,” and draped in painted linen inspired by Kahlo’s Spanish-style garments.

Taylor, former owner of the Red Elephant Yoga and Massage Studio, was inspired by Kahlo’s iconic pieces; like Kahlo, she was creating while fighting off an illness that left her bedridden.

Cramer herself moved to Gulfport in 2019 after a severe concussion forced her to retire from her position as a high school ceramics teacher.

Her piece, titled “Bejeweled Pride Goddess,” a collection of ceramic creations melding together “found objects,” will be displayed at Zaiya ArtiZen Market before the auction.

“I’ve done pieces like this in the past, an assemblage of pieces broken apart and put together in a new and interesting way,” Cramer said. “I really found my tribe, and my ability to create here in Gulfport, and I want to showcase that.”

“It’s not the magic I really wanted to do, but I had two days,” Paonessa said.

Eventually, he wants to make Saltina a skin that can change colors and project a screen of images on her body, all through the technology of LED lights.

“Saltina is back hanging up; right now what you see is a LED rope accenting her,” Paonessa said.

Retiring from LED In 1984, long before Paonessa knew that Gulfport existed, he was struck by the emerging technology of LED. At the first sight of a standard black and red “open” sign, he uprooted his life and dove into working on entertainment projects that required LED touches throughout the country.

Most notably, he worked on the glowing EPCOT globe, installed in 1999, which at the time was a $2 million project.

Today, it costs about $10,000 to install the same effect, said the artist.

According to Paonessa, overseas manufacturing cut costs and put most of the LED industry in the U.S. out of business.

“It’s virtually impossible to compete with how cheap this is now,” Paonessa said. “I still love the technology, and like everything else, you need artists to do it right.”

servance of emancipation day was born. Since the end of enslavement of Black Americans, many laws have attempted to ensure the freedoms promised — education, interracial marriage, voting rights, property ownership, abolishing segregation, etc. So why are these freedoms under attack today?

It is 2021 and it is very clear that today many in political authority (mainly one party) are angry at such freedoms for Black Americans and people of color. Therefore, June 19th isn’t only about celebrating freedoms, it is about the continued fight for freedoms for all, equality for all and judicial justice for people of color. This tiny city of Gulfport still has a lot to learned about acceptance, a lot of work to do to reconcile its past, and should work toward not being afraid to stand up to its own institutional racism. – Yolanda Roman
