What to Do: Wildlife Seeing the occasional possum or backyard squirrel nest is just part of living in Florida. As the population in Pinellas surges, close contact with the local critters is unavoidable. Reef Dog Gifts and Grooming owner Karen DeSocio experienced that firsthand in July when she came across an 8-week-old, seemingly dead possum in the road. “I pulled up next to it, opened my door, looked down and it lifted its head and looked right at me,” DeSocio said. “I had a small jacket next to me that I used to pick up the tiny little [joey] and place it in my [pet carrier] that is always in my car in case things like this happen.” A call to local rescue SPCA Wildlife Intake put the animal in the hands of rehabilitators. After three weeks of formula feedings, she was released back into the wild. According to Birds in Helping Hands Director Shelley Vickery, this is one of the best outcomes for displaced or injured animals. Vickery, who is the “on the ground”

news Council Keeps It Brief
Gulfport Makes Final Approvals on Millage Rate and Budget Aside from city staff, Gulfport Council Chamber was largely empty during a Monday meeting of council on September 20. With only a handful of public comments, and the final approval of the $15,506,660 budget, council wrapped up in a tight 32 minutes during the offbeat meeting time, held early to avoid a conflict with a Pinellas County School Board meeting.
PINELLAS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
By Abby Baker
Final Approvals Council finalized the approval of next year’s millage rate of 4.039 mils without any hiccups. Next year’s budget, effective October 1 of this year through September 30, 2022, was unanimously approved on its second reading. Councilmember April Thanos mentioned that she would like vehicle purchases out of the consent agenda and separated individually. “For any vehicle, whether it be police vehicles, pickup trucks...those kinds of things,” Thanos said. Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson confirmed that this action would be to consider what city vehicles might be replaced with comparable electronic vehicles.
“I don’t want to get to the point where we would have to pay for the helicopter,” Police Chief Vincent said during the discussion of the city’s support service contract with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
cent said. “The sheriff told us the other day he wants to put the helicopter up more. He wants to make the flight plan more active than reactive.” According to the city, the Gulfport Police Department depends on the PCSO for crime scene assistance, fingerprint identification, evidence storage, communications and records management. Council also approved a contract with an independent audit service, Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC, based on the recommendations of the auditor selection committee made up of Councilmember Chris-
tine Brown, City Attorney Andrew Salzman and Kelly Schrader, the Finance Administrator for the City of Pinellas Park. “I’m sure they did a good job of doing this,” said Thanos, who gave the sole dissenting vote on the contract. “I still don’t like the process. I feel like we should have had someone from the public on that committee.” The three-year contract for the city auditing services was already worked into the budget at $38,000. By the end of the meeting, this reporter was the only civilian in the room.
Policing Things Council approved the city’s continuation of law enforcement support services by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for a contract worth $136,321.72 Despite the lack of public comment, the mayor asked Police Chief Rob Vincent about the frequent helicopter noises above Ward 4. “We seem to be the waiting place for something to go wrong,” Henderson, who lives in Ward 4, said. “You’ll notice in that agreement it doesn’t say anything about a [PCSO] helicopter, and I don’t want to get to the point where we would have to pay for the helicopter,” Vin-

Overheard at the September 20 Gulfport City Council Meeting “We basically have some suggestions for the Casino dock and the time limits. They don’t work for (A) people who pay to be in the mooring field... and (B) the people who have jobs...They’re enforcing the four-hour limit again, I’m guessing at the urging of O’Reilly, who hates us. We proposed that you can change the ordinance that controls the time limit on the dinghy dock...just remove the time limit on the north dock...or expand it to more than four hours for the responsible boaters who live out there.” – Rob “Stagger” Cox, Gulfport Marina resident “I wanted to thank the staff for making American Express and Discover Cards available to use online. I know they were not previously in and [the city] worked pretty quickly to make that happen.” - Gulfport resident Margarete Tober

Big Plans
Locals Swamp New Beach Theatre Owners with Ideas, Help The recent sale of the iconic Beach Theatre on Corey Avenue in St. Pete Beach is already generating a lot of buzz. More than 100 people gathered at the St. Pete Beach Community Center to voice their ideas for the venue to Christopher Scott of Scott Commercial Holdings, the new owner of the Beach Theatre. Hendrik Bisanz, broker for SeaSalt Properties who handled the sale of the Beach Theatre, and business partner to Scott, said they hope the newest incarnation of the space will be “along the lines of what it used to be, with added entertainment.” Scott received more than 100 emails expressing ideas for the theater. He sat down with the live audience and tested the waters during the hour-long meeting on September 15 at 5:30 p.m. “The consensus was really that we try and put the building back in some capacity to its original use as a movie theater, but there was also a lot of interest in making it into an actual theater where people could perform on stage,” Scott said. “We’ve felt very fortunate to land in such a community where everyone wants to actually speak up and take an interest in this.” Other ideas included a din-

ner movie theater, productions of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” – a tradition some may remember from the Beach Theatre’s days of yore – and a live music venue. But, stressed Scott, they are still very much in the idea phase. “The first stage really is that we’re hoping to get some architects or some people that have experience on redesigning spaces to come forward and help, or whether it’s on a voluntary basis,” Scott said. Many people have expressed interest in helping reconstruct the theater, according to Scott. He mentioned that the building itself is sturdy, however the interior and the roof need work. searching refurbishments, consulting structural engineers and evaluating funding for rebuilding, the timeline for reopening is still up in the air. “Our budget can really range dramatically,” Bisanz said. “You can spend as little as $200,000 to make something work there, and I’m sure you can also spend $2 million to invest in the place. Depending on what we decide it should be, the budget will be determined and then we will look into how to fund that.” Bisanz notes that the project is just beginning. “Ultimately we have to get to the point where we can involve the people that can really turn it into a business now,” Bisanz said.

This is the program’s return since shuttering in March of 2020 due to the pandemic, and it will stretch from September until December at no cost each Thursday. Membership to the IASOSP is $30, but not required. “I’m going to relocate to Italy and work on dual citizenship,” said St. Petersburg resident Bonnie Worthen, who attended the class. “I’m here at the Senior Center all the time, so this class is helpful.” How do they manage a free threemonth course that models a university-style class? “It can be a struggle,” said President Sharon Dante. “We pay the Senior Center $1,000 yearly, though the space used to be donated for free in the past...I would say we have about 98 members now.” Dante rotates the presidency title with her husband, IASOSP Vice President Steve Dante, who mastered Italian at home in Pinellas County thanks to his Italian grandparents and a dedication to learning.

Scout Hall Closes, Senior Center Front Entrance Blocked for Repairs Both the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center and Gulfport’s Scout Hall are undergoing repairs, but at the moment, only Scout Hall is shuttered. Scout Hall, at 5315 28th Ave. S., which is used as a community meeting place, closed after city employees found a “severe” roof link on Wednesday, September 15. “It’s supposed to be pretty bad,” said Gulfport Public Works Director Tom Nicholls. “We won’t know a timeline until we have it assessed. The area is shut down at this moment.”

chel Cataldo says that the building will undergo repairs come early October, but for now it’s safe to enter and the signage is just up to prepare for future repairs to the drivethrough awning and the stucco near the entrance. “People think we’re closed, but no, just repairs,” Cataldo said. “That entrance will be closed in October, but the other side [entrance] will be good to go.” Nicholls blames the age of the structure itself and the stucco being struck by a truck months ago. “It’s an older building is all,” Nicholls said. “That, and when a vehicle hit the stucco about three months ago it caused a little bit of damage, and revealed more damage to the stucco within a crack.” The repairs to the Senior Center are estimated to take about 30 days.

Fabric Smart’s New Home After the pandemic prompted Fabric Smart, at 5401 Gulfport Blvd., to move to online, the shop has moved again – to St. Petersburg, at 6798 Crosswinds Dr. N. This last relocation was the result of owner Karen Donnelly’s landlord selling the Gulfport building. “The actual space is much nicer. There’s better parking and more space for retail,” Donnelly said of her move in August. Visit or shop Fabric Smart at etsy. com/shop/fabricsmart. Supporting Keith
Iconic Gulfport Muralist in Critical Condition The artist behind many of Gulfport’s hazy, fantastical Florida-themed mural work, Keith Stillwagon, has been hospitalized for over a month, and his family asks for “prayers and support.” Stillwagon, whose iconic murals adorn many Gulfport locations, including Habana Cafe, Gulfport Garage and the Historic Peninsula Inn, has been in the hospital since August after painting a public mural in 95 degree heat. Stillwagon, 77, suffered symptoms of a heat stroke, among other things, says sister-in-law Mar’Sue Haffner, complicating his recovery. “He wants to get home and finish the mural,” Haffner said. “He has hope.” The mural he was painting before falling ill sits at 49th Street and 22nd Avenue, featuring Stillwagon’s distinctive style, but uncharacteristically unfinished. A Vietnam veteran originally from Flint, Michigan, Stillwagon came to Gulfport with a ponytail and a ready hand. Odd jobs turned into commissions, and over the last few decades Stillwagon has become a Gulfport staple. “He likes to paint in direct sunlight. He says it helps him see the colors better,” said friend Jax Taylor. “He’s

Business Owners and Entrepreneurs SCORE with New Program Looking to start a side hustle? Need to learn how to market? With bi-weekly workshops and monthly mentoring, the new Small Business Hub in the St. Pete Beach Library is here to help. Abigail Davis, the programming librarian for the St. Pete Beach Library, said the partnership between SCORE – a nonprofit of professionals who help business owners and entrepreneurs – Pinellas County and the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce started last spring when the library reached out to the group. The library was interested in bringing more business resources to the area and after a few months of brainstorming and summer planning, the program held its first free workshop on September 9. “Our hope is that the Small Business Hub series with SCORE will encourage both our current patrons to pursue their small business goals and for new members to discover the library through this program,” Davis said. Led by Ron Ezsak, the initial workshop was titled, “What’s a Good Idea? – For a Business.” Although the turnout was slim for the first go, Davis said this allowed the presenter and the crowd to have an in-depth, intimate conversation where partic-

“The best thing to do is get a box and throw a towel over it,” Vickery said. “Wait for a rescue or wrap the animal in a towel and take it to the nearest place that will accept it.” A towel can keep the animal – especially young animals – warm and keep it from injuring itself or you. In the case of larger animals, a laundry basket with a heavy book over it can keep the creature in place while you wait for help to come. “Please stay with the animal; it’s so difficult to find them once you move on,” Vickery said. Another misconception about local wildlife, particularly in the case of an baby falling from a nest, is that the animal’s mother will come back for it. Birds are not capable of doing this, Vickery says. “Squirrels might, [but] the best bet is to get them off the ground, into a box and play baby squirrel noises on Youtube near them for about 40 minutes,” she said. “If the baby is injured [the mother] most likely won’t come back.” However, as Gulfport resident Sara Anderson found out, it’s best to consult an expert for each unique situation. Anderson found herself with two screech owl babies, which she named Biscuits and Gravy, when she had a diseased tree removed from her property last May. A volunteer from Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife came to assess the situation and confirm that the babies were almost flying age. “They gave us a wooden owl’s

nest and we nailed it to the closest tree where the babies’ old tree was,” Anderson said. “As soon as dusk came, momma owl was in the new tree near the nest. Josephine’s Rattery & Small Pet Rescue: 561-510-3728 More Tips from Birds in Helping Hands Do not try to give an injured or abandoned baby animal water or food; if not done properly they can drown. Do not keep an animal for a prolonged period of time before bringing it to a rehabilitation center. The animal, particularly babies, can imprint on rescuers and face difficulty being released. It is illegal to set traps without checking them every 24 hours. In the case of ducks, if you see one limping and there is no visible blood or bone, it’s most likely fine. Ducks are prone to sprained legs and can recover fast. And, though it should go without saying, dumping or releasing any pet is illegal – and cruel. Call a local vet or animal shelter to learn how to surrender your animal responsibly. “What to Do” is a new, semi-regular series from the Gabber helping readers know what to do in various situations. Fresh Food Daily
Southside to Become a Permanent Outdoor Market All summer, Southside Fresh Market’s collection of vendors have braved the heat on the grassy lot at 2184 9th Ave. S. While the market is still open, come October, it will move to a permanent spot on 22nd and 15th Avenue South that will house 30 small businesses daily in a sort of grassroots, outdoor grocery store. The current market site belongs to the City of St. Petersburg, which plans to put a public pavilion in the space, prompting the growing market’s move to the historic “Deuces” neighborhood. Since opening in April, Southside co-owners Ramona Brayboy and Judith Turner have worked to make the outdoor space a weekly place for fresh food, homemade products and healthy choices – something that Brayboy says is missing from South St. Pete. “It’s frustrating. It’s hard to go to the north side every time you want something fresh,” Brayboy said. “Everywhere you look it’s fried food, burgers, minimarts. We want to make our community better.” The new market will sit on Brayboy family property. “I stayed up all night writing a grant for the market from the Pinellas Community Foundation,” Turner said. “We got so many ‘no’s...it was exciting to be so inspired and finally get a ‘yes.’” The market just recently began accepting Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT), which shoppers can exchange for Southside tokens and shop for products. Recently, the market was nominated for the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Good Burger Awards, defined as “a business, organization, or individual in greater St. Pete making a positive impact in our community,” by the commerce website. “It’s an acknowledgment that we’re doing a good thing,” Brayboy said. “Something that I’m very honored by.” Good Burger triumphs will be announced on October 28 at Jannus

Senior Center Unveils Celebration Wall, Veteran’s Park Project After being damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017, the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center’s Celebration Wall was reintroduced to the community with the addition of local artist Brenda McMahon’s work on Saturday, September 18. “Frank and Kathleen Cash walked into my gallery one day and had this idea to do a mural on the Senior Center wall...It went from this little sketch on a piece of paper to bigger and bigger,” McMahon said. “It was a beautiful project. It was really fun and of course it looks beautiful in this light.” Heavily funded by residents Kathleen and Frank Cash, the wall features a 20-foot-long ceramic and glass frieze above its collection of dedicated stone squares of benefactors of the Senior Center at 5501 27th Ave. S. Though it’s growing, much of the wall is still blank. “As you see, we have a number of plaques on here that have been either dedicated or purchased by individuals,” said Gulfport Senior Center Foundation President Ronald Coyne. “What we’re hoping to have this whole piece populated in not too long.” A change from the original green leaf topper by artist Jonathan Schork in 2014, McMahon’s ceramic mural features blue glass and a sunset

field of Floridian plants. “When I’m given an opportunity to do something large, it’s just exciting and this is probably my biggest piece to date,” McMahon said. Brick by Brick At the Saturday ceremony, a table of red bricks sparked conversation of the next art project to benefit the Gulfport Senior Center Foundation – the Veteran’s Park Memorial Ribbon Campaign. The bricks, each engraved, will eventually pave the way for a sidewalk in Gulfport’s Veteran’s Park at
5350 31st Ave. S. The length of the future cobblestone path will depend on the number of bricks purchased, at $100 to $175 per brick. “The idea has been around for a while, but we’re just now getting it off the ground,” said Senior Center Foundation Chairman Larry Kennedy. “This will be a huge fundraiser for us.” The timeline for the installation is unclear, but will most likely be this year. Jewelry Teacher Brings Students to Gulfport Art Walk By Abby Baker
JAMES BRIGGS
Since emerging from the ashes of an art-show-less 2020, Gulfport’s First Friday Art Walk is back and giving art programs like the jewelry design at Pinellas Technical College a chance to show their stuff on Beach Boulevard.
At the latest Art Walk, Friday, September 3, jewelry teacher and “jewels old timer” Charles P. Bahringer set up a booth with his students to craft “on the street” and sell their pieces. “As part of the GMC’s focus on
emerging artists during events and through the Rise & Shine grant, [the GMC] invited and secured the participation of a fine jeweler from Clearwater,” Gulfport Merchants Chamber board member James Briggs said. Bahringer is no stranger to the art of jewelry, and has designed and developed products for companies such as Tiffany & Co and Calvin Klein over the span of his decades-long career. He’s been teaching his craft at Pinellas Technical College for three years, and this will be his first booth teaching and selling creations with students at Gulfport’s Art Walk. “Moving forward, promoting student and emerging artists is going to be a regular occurrence at art walks, so we’d love to get that news out there for those who may be interested,” Briggs said. If you missed Bahringer at his spot on 31st Avenue South and Beach Boulevard, see more of his work at charlespbahringer.com. See the class’s progress on Instagram @ptc.jewelry.

Living History
Viva Barron Paints Multi-generational Gulfport Family By Abby Baker
VIVIA BARRON
Artist Viva Barron recreated a photograph of Mary Crear’s family after Crear saw her representational work in The Beach Series.
When Gulfport resident Mary Crear fell in love with St. Petersburg-based Jamaican artist Vivia Barron’s work, she knew she had to commission something special – her daughter-inlaw and young grandchildren, a painting referencing a photo that was taken at Pass-a-Grille Beach. Barron is known for recreating historic photographs of Black history in her faceless folksy painting style that she most recently debuted in her vintage postcard collection, The Beach Series. This is the first time Barron’s been commissioned to paint living people. “At first it was scary, a new challenge. I can look at a photograph and interpret it any type of way, and I’m not a portraitess,” Barron said. “But it was exciting and so personal. This opens up a whole new avenue of work for me.” Crear’s family has owned a home they’ve coined “Gommer’s House” in Gulfport for 42 years, where Crear recently moved after leaving Minnesota three years ago. “My daughter-in-law [Jane Crear] is Kenyan and my grandson [Leon Crear] is half Kenyan,” Crear said. “I wanted to represent them...They’re
visiting from Minnesota for Thanksgiving...It’s going to be a surprise.” Barron lives in South St. Petersburg with a studio at 2500 MLK St. S. “I’m in the heart of the Black community. I was worried about her coming here to my home studio...We could have met at a Starbucks, but she didn’t want to,” Barron said. “She never batted an eye. I could feel an authenticity from her. She didn’t care, she said, ‘I like your work, I want your work.’” “I would like to say it’s all about something deeper – art representing normalcy in Black people – but I really just enjoy her work,” Crear said. “It’s bright, beautiful, and I like the way she depicts water.” Barron said Crear’s commission
touched her because it merged two worlds. “It meant a lot to me. Here’s this white grandmother that had her pick of a million white artists in Gulfport, and she chose to step out of her norm and choose a Black artist to paint her grandchildren,” Barron said. “It’s a shift in a generation.” What’s Next From Viva Inspired by a New York Times article featuring Black surfers, Barron is currently working on an unnamed series about surfing in the Black community. “The photos I saw of these people are so beautiful,” she said. “I can’t wait to start this.” Keep up with Barron’s work at viviabarron.com.

the gabs How can people help clean up in a community? Photos by Gabrielle Reeder
Caymus Maxson, Madeira Beach: “Start making a habit of picking up trash wherever you are and always leave with three, which means to pick up three pieces of trash wherever you are, anywhere in the community. Start making a healthy habit of just picking up and cleaning our environment.”
Jean Engel, Cape Coral: “If we could all just be as conscious about picking up the waste we see, as we are, just like we do with our pets, pick up their waste. Pick up what you see because it will – it really, truly will – make a difference in our community and we all value where we live in our beautiful state.”

Jennifer Engel, Madeira Beach: “I think the best place to start is right in your own backyard. If you take a close look around, more than likely, even as you’re walking down the street, there’s always something to pick up. Whether it’s a cigarette butt, or a plastic bag or even a bottle cap.”
Carl Engel, Cape Coral: “Look around. See if it’s manmade and laying on the ground, pick it up. Here we have these banners, or flags...rather than use balloons to attract attention to some event. Because if the balloons are helium filled, they’ll wind up in the water sooner or later as the wind carries them. Plastic bags, pick them up, wind will carry them. [The wind] will blow them around and they’ll wind up in ponds and waterways. They’ll deteriorate sooner or later, but mostly later, so pick them up now.”

FRISSÉ FAMILY
Frissé, Brett Eric, 45, son of Lillian and the late Donald Frissé of Gulfport. Passed away August 1, 2021 from COVID. Brett resided in Parrish, FL, with his beautiful wife Marlene (Lindnal) and the love of his life, daughter Adrianna. He will watch over and guide Adrianna through her journey in life. His friends and family will always feel his presence in their hearts and souls. Brett had three brothers: Kenneth Frissé, (Berlin, Germa-
ny), Caesar Van Ardoy III (Gulfport, FL) and the late Nelson Van Ardoy (Gulfport, FL). Brett worked for the City of Gulfport Recreation Center in the 1990s, and graduated from Boca Ciega High in 1994. He then attended University of South Florida where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2001, followed by his Master’s in Business. This allowed him to get the job of his life. Working with many doctors, he designed arthroscopic surgery tools. He got to travel the world with his job, and took amazing photographs along the way. He was Global Business Manager and Developer for Sports Medicine. Sports were always a big part of his life. He was on Gulfport’s baseball team and Bogie’s High School bowling team. You could find Brett and his mom most nights at his second home, Ten Pin Lanes. He also coached on weekends and bowled several 300 games. Brett made his way to Reno to bowl for Team USA. He also loved to play golf, and made a hole in one. Sunday morning you could find him fishing with his brother-in-law and his cousin. Adrianna and her dad enjoyed cooking, making cakes together and playing golf.
Brett was a Denver Broncos fan and made sure everyone knew it. He always had his Bronco shirt and hat on. Every game day was spent with Mom and Dad – then just Mom, who spent all game days with him. We all had Broncos gear on: Adrianna with her dresses, Grandma with her hats, Brett and Marlene with their #7 shirts and Ace with his bandanna around his neck. Brett loved practical jokes and pranks and everyone in his life fell to one at some point. He loved jokes in general. If a joke excited, Brett knew it and loved sharing it with people. Brett was outgoing and loved his friends and family. Brett had a car he was so proud of that he put it in different car shows. It had a bubble tube that lit up turquoise, the same color as his car. He was always willing and excited taking on new challenges at work, home and play. Always had projects going at home. Everything turned out beautiful. This is just part of his life, that was taken too soon. You will always be remembered, in our hearts and on our minds. September 16th was your birthday. “Happy Birthday.” We will always miss you. We will always love you.

A real customer testimonial for Marie: My case was a little difficult as we moved my elderly father to CA from Florida and needed help getting his condo ready to sell. Marie did an excellent job helping us get his place looking good (from staging the right furniture to the photos) and making sure everything was working properly before we listed. She has great relationships with various professional people. I utilized the A/C and escrow company she recommended and the experience was great! I couldn’t be more pleased with the results and would highly recommend using her services. She is professional, highly personable and she made sure that my Dad felt comfortable with the entire process from start to finish. Thanks to Marie she made a very stressful situation go extremely smooth and everything went off without a hitch. The end result was amazing! Sherry B. & Richard N.
