Sussman’s love affair with the grill ignited at an early age in Virginia when he and his father would nosh on pulled pork sandwiches and frosty bottles of Dr. Pepper at the local Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que. Sussman found enlightenment once he began cooking on his bullet-style Webber Smokey Mountain grill, recreating the pulled pork memories of his childhood. It wasn’t long until he

Dear Editor: I have no way of knowing the amount of con men handymen who prey on people in Gulfport. It happens all the time, mostly to senior citizens. The usual scam is to get money up front and walk away from the job. Police may respond to a complaint and call it a civil matter. I see their point.

There could be a record kept by the Gulfport Police of the “criminals,” if not to prosecute, then to keep a record of these predators. The crime is larceny by deception. Prosecutors need proof that at the time the criminal took the money, he had criminal intent to steal. That’s not an easy element to prove.

If the criminal did it before, the prosecutor can use that as a common plan or scheme (if the judge approves) on the prosecution’s direct case. – Bruce Plesser

Eleven-Year-Old Head of Trash Turtles Making Waves in Madeira

At just 11 years old, Caymus Maxson is already a force to be reckoned with.

Last year, she started Trash Turtles as part of her fifth grade school project. A year later, after social media promotion and monthly cleanups, the volunteer organization was registered as a 501c3 nonprofit and gained national recognition from actor Ian Somerhalder and Keep America Beautiful.

According to her dad Bryan, Caymus’ school, Madeira Beach Fundamental, includes community service in their curriculum. For their annual project, Caymus had bigger ideas.

In February 2020, while at the beach, the fifth-grader witnessed something that made her yearn to make change.

“The City of Madeira Beach was raking the beach with this big tractor-like rake. They would pick up all of the seaweed in the sand, but the problem was that the trash would intertwine with the seaweed,” Caymus said. She watched the city dump the trash-speckled seaweed back into the water.

Caymus took her concerns straight to the mayor, Maggie Black, and proposed four new ordinances. She asked that the city ban single-use plastics, cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes and Styrofoam on the beach, as well as balloons within city limits.

According to Caymus, Black was thrilled with her tenacity and suggested she pitch her ordinances to the city commission. While the ordinances are yet to be passed, Caymus launched her own initiative: Trash Turtles.

“I hope to spread more awareness, contact more people, just to get out there and say, ‘Hey, a kid can do this, then so can you guys,’” Caymus said.

During the initial days of pandemic shutdowns, Caymus started discovering items and products that were not as sustainable as she liked, Bryan said. She reviewed the products on social media, leading to partnerships with Keep Pinellas Beautiful, which helps bring volunteers to the cleanups and provide materials, and Surfing’s Evolution, which helps with exposure and grants.

Caymus’ Trash Turtles has three prongs, said Bryan: cleanups, awareness and community action. During the monthly cleanups, Trash Turtles also sell stickers, shirts and hats for the cause.

“Anything that we sell, or any donations that we take in, everything goes straight to her initiatives. She’s given away scholarships two years in a row – it’s now a thousand-dollar scholarship.”

Trash Turtles is also raising money to purchase water refill stations for local schools. Two stations were donated to Skycrest Elementary and Madeira Beach Fundamental Middle School and they hope to bring more to other schools.

The Turtles meet monthly for cleanups, but are always advocating for increased awareness on environmental issues. Their mission is to “leave with three.”

“Wherever you are, whether it be home, school, at the beach, at the park, work,” Caymus said, “always pick up three pieces of trash and just leave with it.”

Meet the Queen

Gulfport’s Gecko Queen Doubles as Women’s Chamber VP

You may have seen her dancing with the crown at GeckoFest, but when she’s not reigning Beach Boulevard as 2021’s Gecko Queen, Elizabeth Hendricks sits as the Vice President of the St. Petersburg Women’s Chamber of Commerce.

Originally from Toronto, Hendricks moved to Gulfport from snowy Canada after a life of working in marketing. Once she landed by the shore, she never slowed down.

“I’ve been promoting Gulfport since the moment I got here,” Hendricks said. “I go to every event that I can...I like that it’s a smaller community; people help each other out here.”

In her time down south, Hendricks has volunteered at the Gulfport History Museum and the Gulfport Food Forest and can be spotted every weekend doing yoga on Gulfport Beach.

But before she was a local celebrity, she attended her first St. Petersburg Women’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon three years ago, after seeing the event listed in the Gabber.

Now a primary leader of the volunteer-recruiting group, she remembers feeling a sense of community after joining.

I wanted to get to know new people and learn new things and that’s what the chamber is all about,” Hendricks said.

It was only recently that Hendricks accepted her elected position as vice president with the intention of spreading volunteerism through St. Petersburg.

Her title of Gecko Queen, however, allows her to be a bit more creative, says Hendricks.

“I love dressing up in costumes.

My submission to become Gecko Queen had like 18 pictures of me in

costumes,” Hendricks said. “I think it makes people happy, gives them a reason to approach you and brings people together.”

Hendricks’ next grand appearance will be at Gecko Ball on October 23 at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom.

Her costume of choice?

“Something with wings,” Hendricks revealed. “I’ll stick to an ABBA theme...but I don’t want to ruin it.”

Meet St. Pete’s Spirit-Hunting Scholar, Dr. Brandy Stark

The team – Carissa, JJ Wallace, Veva Scott, Brandy Stark and Marina Spears – geared up at the Suntan Arts Center to investigate two potential apparitions.

Well before the 2000s craze for ghost-hunting reality TV shows, St. Petersburg College humanities and religion professor Dr. Brandy Stark was scouring Tampa Bay for the undead.

In 2021, Stark and her team of five investigators – plus two paranormal hunter pugs Achilles and Patroclus – are the faces behind the Spirits of St. Petersburg ghostly investigation team.

While Stark, who is also an accomplished artist, keeps one foot in academia, she keeps another in the spirit world, hosting Paradise Tours

“When I was younger I would terrify myself reading books,” Stark said.

“As I got older I learned that there is much more value in the role of ghosts in culture than just a ghost story.”

It was 1997 when Stark began tinkering with electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and video recording to document historically haunted places.

but it soon evolved into a group that currently performs 8 to 12 investigations yearly. Stark has investigated spirits at Albert Whitted Airport and a haunted room at The Vinoy, amongst others.

The professor doesn’t charge a penny for her investigative services, which can be in private homes or public spaces, like her most recent examination of the Suntan Arts Center at 3300 Gulf Blvd. on St. Pete Beach.

Most of the time, she says, the “paranormal” can be written off by the mundane – a creaky door, an insect in front of a camera casting a shadow – but not always.

“I think I heard a male voice downstairs,” said Carrisa, one of Stark’s team members, while at the Suntan Arts Center.

They later discovered that their equipment had picked up what sounded like a soft male voice in the midst of her all-female crew.

Stark does her research, and goes into her investigations with a head full of history. On this particular trip, she suspects the source of the husky voice may be Carl Beard – builder of the Don CeSar – or Thomas Rowe, the original owner who commissioned the “Pink Palace” as a tribute to his lost love.

The Don CeSar towers next door, over the arts center, and is where Rowe died.

“I’ve been doing this for 24 years, and people have started telling me their experiences. Someone that works here told me they felt something when there’s no one else around,” Stark recalled. “She described a fellow in a Panama type suit, which would be Thomas Rowe.”

Gulfport Food Forest Grows into Kids Club Clymer Park’s edible patch of land, home to Gulfport’s Food Forest, has been growing for nearly eight years, and over time, a group of interested children has evolved naturally into the Food Forest Kid’s Club.

The public club, headed by volunteer Emma Mujica, meets on Sundays from 10 a.m. till 12 p.m. amongst the fruit trees and art installations at 5501 27th Ave. S. According to Food Forest founder Crea Egan Romanelli, the club mainly consists of kids whose parents are heavily involved with the project, but it’s open to anyone looking to join.

“Their parents all live in Gulfport and I have drawn strength and hope from them over the years... for raising our baby Food Forest through their steady volunteer service,” Romanelli said.

Dear Gabby: Handling Loss & Stale Love

I’ve been in a relationship for two years with a wonderful woman who I met on an app that rhymes with “Hinder.” Not super romantic, I know, but we’re mostly happy and we have two rescue animals together as well as a bungalow, a camper and a backyard full of tomatoes. It’s very lesbian of us.

I’ll cut to the chase: Modern suburbia aside, I’m bored. We go entire days without speaking to each other and our best moments are in front of the TV. I miss dating and the excitement that comes with it... Is settling down in your 20s doomed to a life of “what ifs”?

Should I tell her how I feel? I think it would crush her – or worse, prove that she’s feeling the same.

Every romantic relationship has its unique challenges, but some of the issues are the same monster, different names. What you’re describing sounds like the end of what folks call “the honeymoon period.” It represents the end of the excitement, the end of romance, the end of that special thrill that made falling in love, adopting animals and planting tomatoes feel like an adventure. Regardless of what it’s called, it happens to the best of us, and there are many different ways to approach it, but it all starts with one crucial step: You have to talk about it. When the spark has waned, when folks aren’t speaking to each other, when it feels like your relationship is in a rut, it has to be addressed before you, and your partner, can decide if it’s something reparable or if it’s time to move on. I recommend having this conversation outside of the house, maybe while taking a walk or sitting at a park, so whatever negative energy is released won’t be

trapped in the house with you. Also, don’t make the conversation about blaming. Make your statements “I” statements that center your feelings and what you want. Encourage your partner to do the same. You may find that you both have similar feelings and want the same things, whether that is more adventure between the two of you or more adventures apart. Either way, the way to potentially find a solution is to acknowledge the problem.

I am struggling quite a bit with life at the moment. I encountered a lot of loss very quickly around four months ago: My father passed, my uncle was diagnosed with terminal cancer and within two weeks my wife walked out on me abruptly... I seem to be going through waves of being somewhat OK and utter despair. I understand that these are all normal emotions to experience, but it doesn’t make it any less challenging. This is a lot of loss. The whole experience was kind of like hitting bottom for me; I feel like an entirely different person (in a better way). I would love to share my story as I have come to understand more about my life and how I ended up here. Any sort of advice would be wonderful.

This reminds me of something I saw on social media last year. It said, “Check on your strong friends.”

It sounds like you are very strong, and I say that because the amount of loss and disappointment you’ve experienced could have broken you, but it didn’t. Even more, you feel that you’ve seen some level of triumph and want to share your experience

with others. I love that you want to share your story of strength and resilience, sadness and recovery with others, and a great way to do that, since we are in an incredible age of self-publishing technology, is to consider starting a blog or newsletter, or if you aren’t into writing much, you can do a vlog (video blog). Be sure to keep the story centered on you and your experience. If none of those spark your interest, you can consider joining meet-ups or community-based groups (in person or online) centered around grief and loss to share your story with others who may have felt the way you felt or feel the way you felt. You may also find that the feelings and perspectives of others in these groups can help you build an even stronger foundation for your own healing.

Gulfport History Revealed in Nash Family Collection

This fall, at the Gulfport History Museum, history is coming to life.

It began when Julie Pitzer of Longwood, Florida walked into the museum with a cardboard box and a question.

Pitzer, who has spent several years tracing her family’s genealogy, had an old family photograph of a dozen or so men and boys in front of what appeared to be an old com-

mercial fishing shack. She was hoping to identify the location. But as she opened the box and began laying out dozens of portraits, candids, letters and other family keepsakes, Gulfport Historical Society staff and volunteers realized that this unassuming box was actually a treasure chest of local history.

her ancestry back on her mother Nancy Massingill’s side to William L. Nash, who came from Georgia to what is now Pinellas around 1870 with his wife, Christian McCrae Nash and their nine children. Three more Nashes would be born here in Florida – the youngest of whom was Angus Lawrence “Laus” Nash.

The Nashes would become one of founding families of the peninsula.

Even as a child, Juile sensed there was something Old Florida about her family.

“I grew up with an old kind of food, an old kind of cooking, lots of outdoorsy stuff.” She grins. “My peers were not eating alligator or mullet.”

Her great-great grandfather Angus, who passed away in 1957, would live to see his pioneer settlement become the town of Gulfport, the wild days of Prohibition, and the emergence of modern Florida in the years after World War II. He was very much a part of this history: family legends tell of a still – hidden in the

mangroves – and stories of running liquor from the Bahamas. Angus even made the headlines in 1932 for taking Babe Ruth on a very successful alligator hunt along Bear Creek.

A picture snapped on the scene shows Laus and the Bambino shaking hands over a nine-foot saurian stretched across the bumper of their car.

Just another day in the life, really – Laus was rumored to have killed over 2,000 gators in his career.

Angus’s daughter, Georgena Nash Fillman, born in 1905, left a very different record of her time in Gulfport: a leatherbound diary given to her husband, Aaron Fillman, filled with notes and impressions of life in the Depression and World War II-era Florida.

Gently turning its pages, Julie reminisces: “Here’s where she talks about Fillman – that’s what she called him – going to bring her wood for a fire. Here’s when they got their icebox. Here’s where she went to

The diary places all these life events against a historical background of widespread underemployment and national pastimes such as going to the movies. It is all the more poignant for the entries made at and after Georgena’s death in 1971 by her daughter Betty, who hoped her own daughter would have a record of the mother whom

Betty had loved so much.

When the conversation turns to Betty – Betty Jean Fillman Massingill, born in 1927 – Julie’s voice deepens with emotion.

“She didn’t finish the ninth grade,” says Julie, remembering her grandmother, “but she was the most well-read person I know. She wrote all the time. She died in 1992, right Nash continued on page 16

The cardboard box has many extraordinary examples of Betty’s life and work, including a notebook of poems.

“What will they say about me,” reads the first entry, “Those whom I hold so dear? / What will they best remember / When I’m no longer here?”

bers the Spanish influence in Betty’s cooking: bean soups, fromajardis (a kind of cheese biscuit), chicken and rice.

And mullet.

“Minorcans would drop everything they were doing to go and catch a mullet run,” Juile explains. It was a legacy of hard times in the Minorcan colony at New Smyrna, when mullet was one of the few plentiful food sources, turned into a tradition. “Usually she would fry it,” says Julie. “And eat the gizzards, too.”

This extraordinary collection of photographs and other records is now being scanned and added to GHS’s growing digital archives.

“Julie’s wealth of knowledge is incredible,” Operations Manager Mel Zodda said. The stories and memories that Julie brings, along with her family photographs, can help to fill important gaps in the GHS’s archive. “We do not currently possess such a detailed and informative pictorial lineage of the Nashes.” Scanned items will become a part of the Gulfport History Museum’s permanent collection, and Zodda hopes that other Gulfportians and Gulfport descendants will come forward with details of their own family stories that can shed even more light on Gulfport’s history.

by Big Green Egg. His winning dish? The hand-crafted Korean bulgogi sauce that glazes his fall-off-the-bone wings and ribs.

Recently, I had the pleasure of partnering with him to see The BBQ Buddha’s magic for myself.

For our cooking collaboration, he went all out with a locally caught red snapper (thanks to his boat captain neighbor) as well as American wagyu flank steaks, courtesy of sponsor Snake River Farms out of Boise, Idaho. American Wagyu comes from the crossbreeding of purebred Japanese wagyu bulls with American cow breeds. The result is a luscious, marbled meat that finishes with a rich, buttery mouthfeel.

The day before grilling, Sussman takes out his protein of choice and lets it air dry in the fridge for 24 hours. Two hours before grilling, he tempers the steaks by letting them rest at room temperature, to ensure its maximum juiciness. The night he and his wife Debbie hosted me, he preheated his ceramic Big Green Egg (BGE) for a live fire of 400 degrees. Seasoning his grill grates with avocado oil and lemon, Sussman explained that the iconic BGE is the ideal structure for cook-

ing in all weather elements. Due to the oblong egg structure and the ceramic mold, the Egg allows the griller to cook in any environment without the Florida elements – mainly humidity – interfering with the cooking process. Like any legit culinarian, Sussman appreciates the Maillard reaction – the chemical reaction between reducing sugars and protein under high heat (AKA: “crust”) – and for our American wagyu, the sweet spot is searing for four minutes on either side and letting the meat rest for a solid 10 before slicing.

Once the steaks are resting, the Dizzy Pig dry-rub-dusted red snapper cooks in minutes.

We sat down at a gorgeous, heavy wood table, serenaded by bossa nova music and faint snorts from the Sussman’s French bulldogs, Yoda and Obi, in the background. My steak was cooked to the pristine medium rare temp and oozed with the herbaceous compound butter I brought that night for “garnish.” Chris tells me how he “helps people find the path to barbecue nirvana” by explaining his basic fundamentals of grilling, all while paraphrasing some of the tips in tricks from his newly published cookbook, “The Four Fundamentals of Smoking.”

Ingredients: 3 cups heavy cream (high fat content) 5 Tbsp ice water ¾ oz lemon juice 1 oz chopped fresh herbs (tarragon, chervil, sorrel, parsley, oregano, etc.)

1 ¼ tsp salt White pepper (optional) Parchment paper or plastic wrap Method: Measure water and put in freezer. Pour cold cream into food processor or stand mixer and whip until it separates into buttery solids and cloudy liquid (approximately four to six minutes). Once mixture begins to separate, add water to further increase separation. Using a sieve, pour mixture through cheesecloth and reserve the liquid (this is the buttermilk). Squeeze the butter solids so no buttermilk remains. Beat butter in stand mixer on low until creamy. Add lemon juice, fresh herbs salt and pepper. Roll butter into cylinder about one inch thick in plastic wrap or parchment paper and freeze. To serve, cut ¼” thick slices. Best on top of grilled or broiled meat, added right before service.

We talked about wood chip flavors, dry and wet heat cooking methods, pellet versus live fire grills and how to get that “thin blue smoke” combustion for the ideal smoke rings in grilled meat. As we exchanged stories about how we all came to Gulfport, Chris left me with the most satisfying bite of all: “I’ve never felt more at home living in Gulfport… I’m so glad we found it.”

Her heritage-themed artwork draws inspiration from deep-set memories and family connections.

“When I came here, I was a baby,” Carla said while drawing. “But I’ve been drawing since high school...my junior year an art teacher told me I was doing a good job. That made me feel happy.”

Alex Anizpe, 18, painted his first realistic style acrylic – ”Lukas Wilson Portrait” – for the online exhibit. He’s originally from California, and recently learned of his Mexican roots.

“I do feel connected, but I only found out I was connected when I learned my great-great grandfather was a founding father of the Mexican revolution,” Anizpe said. “So I read a little history about him...Having an ancestor like that, it makes me feel like I could do something great like he did.”

Who is Lukas Wilson?

“He’s like the Mona Lisa,” Anizpe said. “I made him up.”

Ali Vasquez, another Californian-born, Florida-grown artist displays her Mayan-style birds in celebration of the ancient history of the Native Americans.

It’s not exactly Hispanic history, but her brightly colored, chunky drawings play homage to Vasquez’s Salvadoran ethnicity.

“I’m into drawing animals,” Vasquez said. “If I didn’t come here, how would I know how to draw all this?”

Much like the transition student-run Friday Art Market, half of the sales for the exhibit go directly to the artists.

Meet Some of St. Pete’s Inspired Clothing Designers Despite being worlds away from designer capitals, St. Petersburg is home to many clothing creators, and got its own taste of Fashion Month this September. The Avant.

Gala Fashion Art Show at Coastal Creative hosted some recent collections and more on September 17, and the Gabber talked to a few of these talented designers.

Skintight New York native, St. Petersburg local Dana Blickensderfer doesn’t consider herself a designer first – that came later.

Her main form of expression is oil on canvas and photo work. Lately however, Blickensderfer has been into her body-molded “cleo-suits” that she debuted at the Coastal show.

“As a woman, working with the female form is such a tangible experience,” Blickensderfer said. “I haven’t done any body work on the male form, but being a female, it’s just more comfortable.”

The goddess-inspired looks are created from spray paint and duct tape, and come together on-site – a suit of “fem” armor inspired by Queen Cleopatra, a nod to the artist’s Egyptian ancestry.

The Sound of the Sea

Author Cynthia Barnett’s New Book Shows Our Connections When environmental journalist Cynthia Barnett was growing up in Florida, one of her favorite seashells was the lightning whelk, an impressively large spiral with chocolatey stripes that is a common find on Gulf beaches. For years, a specimen she and her husband found at Cedar Key has topped her family’s Christmas tree. But it was not until she began researching her newest book, “The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of the Oceans” (W.W. Norton & Company, 2021), that she understood the full significance of the whelk, which was used by Native Americans of the Gulf Coast for centuries for making food, tools and ceremonial objects, as well as for trading to other indigenous groups throughout the Southeast.

“I never knew the importance of the lightning whelk’s life and afterlife for Native American people,” she recalls. “I was moved by those stories of true native Floridians – and humbled by all that I didn’t know about a natural object with which I thought I was familiar.”

Florida plays a prominent role in the book, with chapters that examine not only the lightning whelk, but also queen conchs and the Conch Republic (better known as Key West), Sanibel Island’s shell tourism, and the decline of bay scallops in Tampa Bay. Beachcombers, divers and local history fans alike will appreciate the way Barnett places familiar Florida moments in a broader context.

A consistent theme throughout the book is the impact of climate change on the world’s oceans, and its inextricable links to our extractive economy. While Barnett provides some hopeful stories – such as Palauan scientists hoping to adapt body temperature regulation techniques from giant clams into new cooling technologies for power plants – the overall picture of the ocean’s health is alarming.

But maybe that is a good thing?

“My hope,” Barnett explains, “is that seashells may be ambassadors for helping a broader audience understand what’s happening to the sea and its life – and also the extent to which we will not solve environmental problems without also addressing human injustices – and that my work can help inspire that larger ethical shift.”

Remembered as the metaphorical “Mayor of Treasure Island,” Joe Nuzzo died in hospice care on Thursday, September 23 and left behind a community of coastal friends, family and his iconic Suncoast Surf Shop at 9841 Gulf Blvd.

His shop, opened in 1966, paid homage to the blazing beach summers of Nuzzo’s youth.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and opened Suncoast Surf Shop at just 22 years old. Despite hailing from New York, over the next 55 years, Nuzzo and his shop would go on to become a favorite of the Gulf Beaches community.

“He’s loved by everyone, definitely by me,” younger sister Geraldine Nuzzo-Carl said. “I’m just so hurt over this.

He was like my best friend. I called

him everyday. He’d give the shirt off his back to anyone.”

It was Nuzzo-Carl who ran the shop when her brother was traveling the world with his surfboard.

Nuzzo hit the waves in Barbados, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico – and when he wasn’t globe trotting, the ex-sailor volunteered with Surfers For Autism in Pass-a-Grille.

“Joe was just happy; he made friends everywhere he went, and knew people all around the world,” said friend Gail Gilchrist. “He truly was the man, the myth and the legend...

Joe hung with Jimmy Buffet before he was Jimmy Buffet.”

Gilchrist, who met Nuzzo in 1983 while haggling over the price of a pair of sunglasses at his shop, remembers him as family.

“If he invited you into his life, he would take care of you emotionally,” Gilchrist said. “He lived his life to the fullest every minute of the day; that’s why it was so hard seeing him go.”

Nuzzo is survived by his 20-yearold son, Jonah Nuzzo.

“Jonah was his world for the last 20 years,” Gilchrist said.

According to family and friends, there will be a memorial service held in Gulfport on the date of what would have been one of Nuzzo’s iconic Christmas parties, December 14.

“His wishes were to be buried at sea and to have a big party with lots of music,” Nuzzo-Carl said. “So that’s what we’re doing.”
