Fonzie in Lemur Land Eric Cudar, owner of Gulfport Garage and two ring-tailed lemurs, is used to explaining himself. For the past 20 years, Cudar has shared his life with lemurs Fonzie and later, Charmin. The largest room in his home, the dining area, is completely transformed into a primate friendly pen for the two strepsirrhine primates – “dumb monkeys,” Cudar jokes. Fonzie, Cudar’s original lemur, and Charmin – named after the toilet paper – spend their days eating monkey biscuits that Cudar gets from a local feed store and walking the suburbs of Gulfport by harness. “Charmin is a sweetheart, and Fonzie is more of a character,” Cudar said. “A lot of people think they’re raccoons.” In 2006, pre-Charmin, a much younger Fonzie could be spotted in the window of Gulfport Garage most days. That was until a potential lawsuit, and a lack of license banished him to Lemur Land in Cudar’s home.

Gulfport Council Talks COVID Funds, Tables Details By Abby Baker
PXHERE
Gulfport City Council debated the fate of millions of dollars in COVID-19 funds, parking lot legalities and green-lit a fishing tournament, amongst other things at the Tuesday, October 5 meeting. Big Bucks After months of what-ifs, council approved a contract with the State of Florida for the city’s portion of the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Funds amounting to $6,181,536. The funds are part of the American Recovery Plan Act 2021 and come with enough stipulations that the city has hired David Alvarez with Carr, Riggs & Ingram to do research on what the city can and cannot use the money for. An absolute “no” is the city spending the money to pay off any debts or putting it into a rainy day fund, says Alvarez. “From the start of the CARES act, I’ve been a part of an 8 to 10 person group doing research on this,” Alvarez said. “This is not a 5,000 page act where every question you have they give definite answers, because governments are all over the place
with what they’re spending the money on.” Whatever decisions the council comes to, the money must meet at least one bullet in the series of criteria: • Address the Negative Economic Impacts Caused by the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency • Support COVID-19 Related Public Health Expenditures • Replace Lost Public Sector Revenue • Provide Premium Pay for Essential Workers • Invest in Water, Sewer and Broadband Infrastructure

City officials debated their economic priorities, which ranged from beach nourishment projects to a renovation of the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center. According to City Manager Jim O’Reilly, council will come back with more concrete decisions at the next meeting, October 19. “We’re recalibrating with council’s input and we are hoping to have more capital items focused for the next meeting,” O’Reilly told the Gabber. “I know it’s pretty vague and generic right now, but that’s because it’s a lot of information and we want to hone in on focus opportunities.” The city agreed to look into a $50 voucher for local businesses per household stimulus, in lieu of the original concept to provide utility bill assistance. Council moved away from the utility bill idea due to the complexity of identifying separate water meters in multiple household buildings and apartment complexes. “This is something tangible we’re looking to do right around the holidays,” said Mayor Sam Henderson. Alvarez said that this would be an eligible use as long as the city solely gave the certificates to people or businesses who can certify they suffered economic hardship during the pandemic. It’s unclear if and how the city will

Council quickly approved Retro Production Company for the continuance of their Wednesday Night Swing and Second Friday Soul dance services. The city also approved a contract with Asphalt Paving Systems Inc for $381,201.75 for the next year. The Man Who Bought the Building
Gulfport Coffee House Owner Outwits Investors The 20s-era building that houses Beach Boulevard spots such as SumitrA Espresso Lounge+ and Sea Dog Cantina has a new, yet familiar owner. Maurice Loeb, owner of Gulfport’s coffee lounge, SumitrA, bought the entire building at 2838 Beach Blvd. S., which houses five businesses, to avoid the property being snatched up by a real estate company. He purchased the property from previous owner Albert Espinoza under a holding company, Maullie Holdings with investor Allison Cass after catching wind that a real estate company was interested in buying. Maullie Holdings also owns a rental property in Gulfport. “If someone were to come from out of town with their own intentions, I have no control,” Loeb said. “It was really time to put my money where my mouth was. It came down to ‘How bad do I want to stay here?’’’ Pretty badly, apparently. “The sale was significant. I’d say it was the biggest sale in downtown Gulfport, but I’d prefer not to say the price,” Loeb told the Gabber. The building, coined the 1926 Business Center after its year of completion, is home to not only SumitrA’s cafe and Sea Dogs, but Synergy Sports Medicine and Fitness, Mother Ocean Studios and The Revel Studio. Loeb saw the building being rebuilt from apartments and a laundromat in the early 2000s. He always liked the structure, and opened the coffee house in 2019 with intention of bring-

tional Sea Dog chain, but separate as a “cantina-style” Mexican restaurant at 2832 Beach Blvd. S. “In order for Sea Dog to work, there needs to be a bridge between the cantina and Gulfport,” Loeb said. That’s where he comes in. After a multi-week shut down and reboot, the restaurant reopened on September 1 with Loeb as partial owner of the Gulfport version of the chain, which is headquartered in Maine. “Since reopening it’s been nothing but incredible,” Loeb said. “The fact that they did this shows that they want to be a part of Gulfport’s community” Staff and management changes went down as part of the cantina’s shift, but the food and expansive outdoor seating area will stay mostly the same, said Loeb.

Having a Field Day
Gulfport Seniors Head Outside for Active Aging Week The second day of the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Active Aging Week 2021, seniors hit Chase Park for pickleball, chair volleyball, badminton and other offbeat team sports for a field day on Tuesday, October 5. The Senior Center may have organized the five day event, but volunteer ballroom dance teacher Larry Lucas made game day possible in the grassy field at 27th Avenue South and 54th Street South when he agreed to supply all of the equipment. “Larry’s an entertainer, so he happened to have all of it,” said Senior Center Supervisor Rachel Cataldo. “I’m doing everything but bringing lunch,” Lucas said. “I did this sort of thing for 46 years in Atlanta and now I’m doing it again.” Lucas’s version of a Gulfport fun day centered around a crowd favorite, chair volleyball. Your St. Petersburg City Council Ballot Explained By Abby Baker
BOBBIE SHAY LEE
ROBERT BLACKMON
Starting November 2, voters will have their say on St. Petersburg’s next mayor and council members in Districts 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8. This election is non-partisan, but each candidate has strong stances on how they will represent the city during their term in office. The candidates, two in each category, beat out the competition in late August during the primary elections. Each aspiring official, and a handful of incumbents, will have to win the majority vote to reach the coveted spot at St. Petersburg City Hall. The election is city-wide; residents can request a mail-in ballot until October 23.
KEN WELCH
The Next Mayor: Ken Welch vs. Robert Blackmon St. Petersburg is saying goodbye to term-limited Mayor Rick Kriseman, who has served for the full term limits.
His successor will be either Ken Welch (kenwelch.com) or Robert Blackmon (blackmon4stpete.com), who have wildly different political agendas and backgrounds. Welch, a registered Democrat who grew up in St. Petersburg’s Gas Plant District, served as the second ever Black commissioner on the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, District 7, for 20 years. Similar to his platform as commissioner for two decades, Welch looks to prioritize economic development by focusing on climate resiliency, transportation, equity, housing and criminal justice reform. In contrast, registered Republican Robert Blackmon has a background in St. Petersburg real estate. The former Council of Neighborhood Associations representative states he is focused on preserving historical neighborhoods and spaces, but also aims to build on eco-

Shops in the Sand
Ocean Air Market Opens on St. Pete Beach Before the pandemic, Ester Venouziou, founder of LocalShops1, and the Postcard Inn collaborated to bring a weekly Thursday night market to the courtyard of the St. Pete Beach spot. After a year of brainstorming how to restore a similar market, organizers have an answer. Starting Sunday, October 24, Postcard Inn and LocalShops1 are partnering to bring a daytime Ocean Air Market to the sands of St. Pete Beach. “As an establishment, we understand that COVID is still something that is very prominent and it’s something that we want to be aware of,” Allie Singer, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Postcard Inn said. “At the same time we want to come up with a safe and fun solution for our guests to be able to come out and enjoy the beach. By doing this out on the beach we still feel that we can operate this event in a safe manner and just bring some joy into people’s lives.” The vendor demand for the market was overwhelming. According to Venouziou, 21 slots filled up in 12 hours. In addition to vendors, the market plans to feature live music, drink deals and food specials, with $5 beach parking for guests. “We figured that might be a better way to attract more people who are already on the beach, and kind of more fun because you’re right there by the bars. People will be drinking and shopping at the same time, so not as separated as we had before,” Venouziou said. Due to its foundation of sand, the logistical setup is more complicated than a market on pavement, but Venouziou thinks it will provide a unique experience. When asked what environmental measures are being taken to protect the beach, Singer said they don’t anticipate a negative impact. The resort has trash and recycling bins equipped with signs to recycle, and paper straws available for use. “Everyone’s been kind of pent up with COVID, then the beach suffered red tide, so [this is] just a way to draw in our local community...

Two Toddlers The lemurs, Cudar’s greatest loves, are incredibly high maintenance and a lifetime commitment, he says. “I don’t let them run the house without me because it’s like having a couple of two-year-olds that can reach whatever and do whatever they want,” Cudar said. “If you take one out of the pen and not the other, they’ll start howling and crying... they have their little squabbles.” There was a time when Fonzie would ride on slow-moving ceiling fans and eventually break them; he would kick off as the fan fell out of the ceiling. “I’ve been outwitted by ‘The Fonz’ more than once,” Cudar said. Once, before Charmin, Cudar left Fonzie with a girlfriend and went to Poland for an operation. The lemur was so stressed, he stopped drinking and eating. “When I came home, he was so dehydrated that he could barely scream. All he wanted to do was lick my face,” Cudar said. “I got him to drink by pouring water down my face.” Charmin, who is slightly off-colored and overweight, would probably not make it in a lemur preserve, Cudar says. “He looks like the Chris Farley of lemurs,” Cudar said. “He’s so squeezably soft, he’s irresistible.” Fonzie, who knows how to turn on a faucet and adjust the water temperature, goes to the bathroom in the bathtub when he’s running freely. He used to use the toilet, but stopped after the seat hit him on the head and knocked him into the water. The average lemur lives about 30 years in captivity and 20 in the wild. If both Fonzie and Charmin were wildbred lemurs, they’d be on their way out the door. “I know an animal is not the same as a child,” Cudar said, but to him, Fonzie and Charmin are “somewhere in between a dog and a person.” Want more Fonzie? "she saved my life"
Tampa Bay area resident Jean P. had been experiencing the painful side effects of peripheral neuropathy, “My feet and legs were extremely painful and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do and that I would have to take gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met St. Petersburg's Dr. Rebecca Gibbons. Peripheral neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Jean explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?" She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling and sharp pains that those suffering with neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, is that it's equivalent to walking on glass.” Jean hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her feet. Unfortunately Jean's story is all too familiar. Over 3 million people in the U.S. suffer from peripheral neuropathy. If you’re unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis, you’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet. You have difficulty walking, shopping or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain. You’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall.
Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects. Dr. Gibbons, founder of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in St. Petersburg, FL, is using the science of acupuncture and other integrative techniques that assist in increasing blood flow and expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease. “Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,”Jean enthusiastically describes life after receiving Dr. Gibbons treatments. 'I can wear socks and shoes!”
If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain or you’ve had to miss out on enjoying our beautiful weather and beaches because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Dr. Gibbons and the staff at Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Gibbons is now accepting new patients. Call (727) 272-3587 now to schedule a consultation.
Jean and her sister now operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes covering up to 5 miles a day. "It's life altering. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Gibbons saved my life!" Dr. Gibbons who has also been an RN for over 16 years, integrates both her western medicine background with effective eastern medicine strategies to be able to offer a different non-drug, non surgical option to those who have chronic pain and complex chronic conditions.

crime Police Shoot, Kill Domestic Violence Suspect Two Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputies shot and killed Chad Allen Jenkins, 50, on the night of Monday, October 4 in St. Petersburg while they were attempting to arrest him on domestic violence charges. The deputies initiated contact with an armed Jenkins at 3949 38th St. N., and fired shots after he refused to put down a sighted firearm, police reported. “Jenkins sustained gunshot wounds that resulted in his death,” the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office released. Deputies were called earlier Monday night after Jenkins was suspected of hitting his ex-girlfriend, and then her teenage son when he tried to stop the attack, St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway said in a Tuesday press conference. A doorbell camera on Jenkin’s ex-girlfriend’s property recorded him

saying suicidal messages and revealing a firearm. Deputies arrived with the intention of arresting him on probable cause for child abuse, a felony, and misdemeanor domestic battery. Shortly after Jenkin’s death Monday night, the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Task Force was activated. The program prevents
law enforcement agencies from conducting investigations of their own use-of-force incidents. On Tuesday, the St. Petersburg Police Department released a statement that “Pinellas County Sheriff’s Corporal Casey Hunter and Deputy Derric Gandee-Lunsford are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”

arts ‘Radical Inclusion’
All Words Welcome in ‘Gateway: Gulfport Poets’ By Abby Baker
PETER HARGITAI
Peter Hargitai is Gulfport’s poet laureate and the editor of “Gateway: Gulfport Poets.”
The recently published book of poetry, “Gateway: Gulfport Poets” features the musings of 12 local writers, including Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson, as well as a retired hypnotherapist Dianne Marlene Kress. The collection serves as a fundraiser for The Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Library and is edited by Gulfport’s poet laureate, Peter Hargitai, who allowed anyone with a passion for words to have a spot in the collection. Hargitai spent three years waiting on a rejection from an American publishing company before taking the book to an India-based publisher, Cyberwit.net. The first official copies came out in June. “I accepted anyone with a passion for poetry, who writes poetry, that’s all it takes,” Hargitai said. “Radical inclusion, that’s what I’ll call it.” The 200 pages are filled with the hyper-contrasting work of Vincent Spina, Stone Handy, Molly Ellowis, Michael Henry Fridovich, Jude Bagatti, Nadine Miller, Rob McCabe, Michael Arthur Taylor, Ellen Noto, Henderson, Kress and Bob Bates. The Circle of Friends, a nonprofit dedicated to bettering the local library, receives a portion of sales, though, in Hargitai’s words, it’s not exactly a get rich quick scheme.

“There’s no money in poetry unless you’re Madonna or somebody,” the poet laureate said. “No one gets rich, but the pennies stack up.”
An unlikely name in the print credits, Gulfport councilmember and veteran Michael Fridovich, has his share of unpunctuated poems in the book. Fridovich, a private writer, began jotting down poetry in his teens and was published once circa 1977 in liberal political magazine, In These Times. “I find poetry to be a little easier than prose; I don’t punctuate because I don’t know how,” Fridovich said. Fridovich isn’t the only city official in the book; Henderson is heavily featured in Gateway as well. As the previous Gulfport poet laureate and a local musician, his work comes a little more naturally. “I was a big reader as a kid, and I loved the way an author could capture an emotion or the most intimate part of a story with poetry,” Henderson said. “For me, it was a beautiful thing to be published.” Hargitai’s wife and previous Miami hypnotherapist, Kress, didn’t begin writing poetry until she moved to Gulfport. She worked as a therapist helping people with addictions for 25 years and is the woman whom Hargitai credits for teaching him to drive a car and teach English after coming to America as a Hungarian Revolution refugee. “Once I retired to Gulfport, I was

free,” Kress said. “I began painting with my words.” Her work ranges from retelling of dreams, descriptions of Florida nature and an evening babysitting her grandchild.
“Sometimes I just have this urge to put it on paper,” Kress said. Gateway: Gulfport Poets is available on Amazon or directly from the publisher at cyberwit.net/publications/1716.

obituaries SCHILLINGER-IMPAGLIAZZO FAMILY
Gloria Schillinger-Impagliazzo passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home as her children had promised her. Gloria was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to her parents Mr. Alphonse Gendreau and Mrs. Mary Louise Reaume Gendreau. Gloria graduated from the Ottawa University with a Bachelor’s in Communications and was happy to become a news anchor at the local radio station in. Sarnia, Ontario - CHOK. As anchor, Gloria had the privilege of introducing Queen Elizabeth when she was on a tour of Canada (“Gloria, you did a nice job
introducing me,” the queen told her). She married Hubert J. Schillinger and raised their children in Port Sanilac, Michigan. She was co-owner of Schillinger Insurance Agency. Three years after her husband passed away, Gloria married Al Impagliazzo and they settled in Florida in 1991. Gloria was a member of St. Jude’s Cathedral where she was a Eucharistic Minister and delivered Holy Communion to the homebound in the community and finally transferred to Most Holy Name of Jesus for ease of access. Gloria belonged to Michigan Lioness Club, Florida, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of Italy, Women’s Organization of the Moose Lodge and Gulfport Women’s Club. After her husband Al Impagliazzo passed away, Gloria volunteered at the hospital, the college and finally the Senior Center for 11 years. She would tell us many times that her greatest joy in living in Town Shores
was the friendliness and sincere concern of her neighbors. Gloria is survived by her five children: Lou Schillinger (Vickie), Marc Schillinger (Linda) in Venice, Florida, Denise Forsgren, Palm Bay, Florida and Monique Tyl (Craig) in Milford, Michigan; four step children: Denise Griffinths in Delaware, Janice Brimmer in Elkton, Maryland, Lois Greaser in Wilmington, Delaware and Al Impagliazzo Jr in New London, New Jersey; 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. All are her treasures. Gloria was predeceased by husband Hubert J. Schillinger and husband Al Impagliazzo; her brother Dr. Bernard Gendreau in March 2004; special friend James Clark in Florida and her granddaughter Brin, age 7, in 1987. Gloria rests in peace next to her husband and father of her children, Hubert J. Schillinger in Port Sanilac, Michigan.

A real customer testimonial for Marie:
PP It was a pleasure working with Marie Drew. ROV Her Real Estate and marketing expertise as well as her knowledge of the Gulfport, Florida market, priced our home for a really quick sale at the asking price. While there were issues to be resolved due to an inspection report, Marie was very helpful in providing resources to make things right. Selling and leaving a home one loves is a trying time; however, Marie kept me focused and provided the reassurance I needed on a daily basis to get through the total experience. I will definitely recommend Marie in the future! A
