Paxton and Jaxon Pollard at the 2020 Halloweendows.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. (No, not that time – it’s way too early to think about our winter holidays just yet; as I write this, it’s 79º in Gulfport – at 9 a.m.) Those of you who know me understand that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. At our house right now, we have various skeletons scattered throughout our home, a spider-bedazzled wreath on our front door, and a centerpiece made of shells and eyeballs (not real eyeballs, and, for that matter, not real spiders). Preparations are underway for our annual Peep-O-Ween, a somewhat bizarre custom we have with some friends involving recreating scary movie scenes with a cake adorned with Peeps®, a supremely bad scary movie (think Sharknado, but without the acting talent or high production values), and my ever-suffering dachshund in a costume (Calypso is going to rock her octopus costume.) It’s probably an understatement that I believe Halloween should be a big deal. Trick-or-treating seems to have fallen out of fashion, unless your neighborhood goes all out, like Old Northeast, or Crescent Heights (shout out to the home with a giant spider web stretching from the roof to the fence.) Trunk-or-treat or

Gulfport’s Trick-or-Treat Trail entices kids and offers parents some reassurances about safety. The City of Gulfport does a great job offering kids a safe way to enjoy Halloween. Last year, they added one more – they sponsored the Gabber’s first-ever Halloweendows, a Halloween-themed windows painting contest in Gulfport. Shops offered their window space, and kids showed up to paint their Halloween vision on those windows. Winners in each age group won cash. This year, the city again sponsors this kid-andart-friendly contest. The parents get free coffee at Stella’s, and every registered kid gets breakfast there, too. Once again, winners in each category get cash prizes. It’s no secret Gulfport has a disproportionate number of talented artists, but even if your kiddo might not be the next Rembrandt, why not bring them out and let them make some art? It’s fun, it’s free and I’ve yet to meet a kid who would turn down pancakes. Happy Halloweendows! – Cathy Cathy@thegabber.com Please note: due to limited window space, you must register for Halloweendows by Friday at 5 p.m.

news Parking Pains and Development

Gulfport Council Challenged on Parking Lots, Preserving the Waterfront Gulfport’s City Council meeting grew tense more than once on Tuesday, October 19 with a resident confronting officials about a lack of information regarding a city lawsuit, a dispute over parking lots and future building design standards in the city’s waterfront district. Council also went on to approve several items, including the annual Boca Ciega Yacht Club (BCYC) Christmas Parade and a private program to help residents update their water lines. Parking Pains A second reading allowing for stand-alone ground level parking lots was shakily approved 3-2, with Councilmembers April Thanos and Paul Ray dissenting. “I don’t have a problem with this as it is, but we’ve had a couple of letters about this. I’d like to change this to make it conditional use,” Thanos said. “It’d be something that they would have to jump through an extra hoop to do.” Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson pointed out that with the price of Gulfport property, it’s unlikely someone would purchase space solely to turn it into a parking lot, and if they did, it wouldn’t necessarily be a negative. “Would we be offended by a parking lot of a single story?” Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson asked. “When everyone’s been complaining about parking for years?” “We need parking, we need parking, we need parking, and here is an out-of-the box solution to help with this problem and all of a sudden it seems like there is too much parking,” Councilmember Christine Brown said. While parking has been an oft-discussed issue in the city, several noted that lots are not an aesthetically pleasing feature in the Waterfront District.

ESTER VENOUZIOU

By Abby Baker

There was some controversy over council allowing private parking lots in downtown Gulfport.

Zoom caller and longtime resident Levi Kidder added an emotional plea for the parking lot ordinance to not carry to passage, a speech that he previously sent to the City of Gulfport. Kidder introduced himself to the council as a born-and-raised resident of Gulfport who had seen the city grow into the “interesting, diverse, incredibly walkable, friendly city that it is today. “Now, seeing this proposal to allow for ground level parking in the waterfront redevelopment district, I’m extremely concerned. As citizens of Gulfport I believe it is our duty to make our city the best and most enjoyable place to live that we possibly can, and parking lots do not do that,” Kidder said. “Parking lots add dead

zones, places that are only for cars.” He went on, and was eventually cut off early twice, by the three-minute time limit, and the ordinance allowing parking lots became official. The New Standard With more people and business coming to Pinellas County, the City of Gulfport has long supported the creation of “design standards to guide future development within the Water Redevelopment District (WRD) zoning district while providing incentives to use these standards.” The purpose of these standards would be to essentially “keep Gulfport, Gulfport,” despite development.

theGabber.com | October 28, 2021 - November 3, 2021

At Tuesday’s meeting, Fred Metcalf, Director of Community Development and Linda Fisher with Forward Pinellas, gave a presentation regarding these standards that summed up what can and can’t be done in Gulfport’s WRD, as well as building options that will preserve the zone’s aesthetic. Henderson noted that developers who abide by these guidelines face a much easier, faster route to buying and building in the city. “I think this is a great step to doing something more incentive-based and also protecting us from being sued for infringing on people’s rights to profit from their property,” the mayor said. One of the points discussed is permitted development uses in the area, which included art galleries, multiple family dwellings, restaurants with a prohibition on drivethroughs, theaters, banks and others. Councilmember Michael Fridovich noted that he would like to remove churches and universities from the permitted list; Thanos agreed. “I’ve got nothing against churches, but we can limit that to another part of the city,” Fridovich said. The discussion to move forward with banning these establishments went on between council and Metcalf, with no real results. “I’m not prepared to give consensus on this right now,” Henderson said, adding to Thanos: “It sounds like a conversation you and Mr. Metcalf should have at another time.” “I’m just asking a question,” Thanos shot back. Thanos also remarked on raised homes, something that is common in beachfront neighborhoods that are prone to flooding. “People are going to be building more and more raised housing over time...I think we should add guidelines for that,” Thanos said. “Which isn’t part of today...but if we had a Mexico Beach event we’d be kind of screwed.” “I think if we had a Mexico Beach event no matter what we’ve done...,” Henderson alluded, a reference to Council continued on page 6

Overheard at the October 19 Gulfport City Council Meeting “I’m here to give something to the City of Gulfport. Through an environmental program, volunteers collect plastic and send it to plastic collection. For four years we’ve been doing this. Six hundred pounds of plastic is turned into a four-foot bench, but we need more donation collections. This particular bench would be in Veteran’s Park.” – Gulfport Lions Club First Vice President Ron Coyne “[In] my request for information using Sunshine Law, and legal avenues – documented and written – I’m being refused all sorts of information about these lawsuits...about Boca Ciega Yacht Club, about the finances involved with Boca Ciega Yacht Club, about the lease negotiations that are going on, about any insurance, any correspondence between the City of Gulfport insurance and the city...What I’m looking for is transparency within my city. There is no transparency when it comes to a lawsuit...who’s controlling what the City of Gulfport says in these lawsuits is what I would like to know.” – Gulfport resident Ray Rodriguez, who said that he has been denied public information on the city’s ongoing lawsuits. “No one’s been denied – by myself, city staff, the city clerk, the city attorney – any information that’s been requested has been provided.” – Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly From the back row, Rodriguez responded with a single word: “Liar.”

the devastation Category 5 Hurricane Michael caused to the Panhandle in 2018. “I trust your recommendations; I know this is the world ya’ll live in,” Henderson said to Metcalf and Fisher at the tail end of the discussion. The guidelines go on to state no building can be over 45 feet, multiple-family dwelling lots are required to be 13,100 square feet, with an additional 4,350 square feet for each dwelling unit and many more specifications. Resident Karen Love also expressed positivity regarding the new standards. “I’m so excited to see…,” Love said. “Whether you’re a buyer or seller, it’s the best of both worlds living in an old city.” Council also discussed architectural methods that would work to preserve the WRD, such as greenspace, balconies and window requirements, among many others. The long list of building requirements included one window every 20 feet per floor, per building, the acknowledgment of “human scale” – the proportional relationship of a particular structure or streetscape element to the human form and function and low-to-the-ground vegetation. Council went back and forth between themselves, before settling on approval with further discussion

before a final adoption of the standards at the Tuesday, November 2 council meeting. What’s Next in Gulfport On a lighter note, council approved temporary signage for Gulfport’s Art Jones Studio Tour event without issue. The self-guided tour brings attendees throughout the city to see clusters of combined artists in various local studios on December 4 and 5. The temporary signs would work as guides and promotion for the artistic celebration. The BCYC Christmas Parade was also confirmed, bringing celebrators to the edges of the bay to cheer for decorated vessels on December 11. Effective immediately, the city authorized $200,000 in Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds for a private waterline and private lateral replacement

Interested residents can contact the city for more details. Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Foundation donated a touch-free water fountain and a new exercise bike to the Senior Center, with council’s approval. The fountain was priced at $1,653 and the recumbent exercise bike rang in at $2,700. In closing statements, Brown suggested adding “twinkly” lights for the holidays in Trolley Market Square, much like the city provides in Clymer Park. Henderson expressed interest in adding this, and concluded with a joke. “Plus the illumination may keep people from hitting it,” Henderson said, which generated laughs around the room.

The art auction benefits Suncoast Voices for Children and the Sonia Plotnick Foundation.

An 80s hair band served up looks for the contest.

After a multiple-month setback, Gecko Ball lit the Gulfport Casino Ballroom green on Saturday, October 23 with party-goers dressed like travelers from the past to suit this year’s theme, Gecko Bandstand. Originally the ball was to be held in August, but organizers at the Gulfport Merchants Chamber (GMC) postponed the indoor event due to COVID-19 concerns.

Brady Johnson and Margie Davis in the gecko spirit.

Despite the unorthodox date and scaled back tickets, this year’s ball sold out and hosted a wild costume contest on a packed dance floor. “I think it exceeded our expectations; maybe some people were disappointed, but just like in Gulfport fashion, it was the party of the year,” said GMC President Barbara Banno. The party benefits a different charity each year, and this ball sup-

ported two organizations: Suncoast Voices for Children and the Sonia Plotnick Foundation. “We’re waiting to get our final numbers, but the art auction went over great,” Banno said. “I’m looking forward to donating...and giving back to those charities.” Dying to see more Bandstand fun? The witches took on Gulfport Beach.

The sheer number of pointed black hats in one spot in Gulfport, Wednesday, October 20 was nothing if not head-turning. Thirty-four people dressed in witchy garb gathered for a photo-op on Gulfport Beach – a small sample of the more than 200 who will breeze through Gulfport’s Waterfront District on Halloween night as part of the group’s Witch Walk. There’s a handful of warlocks too, says Libby Higdon, original creator of Witches of Gulfport. Higdon and her counterpart, SIK Promotions owner Suzanne King, have been bringing witchcraft-lovers together for the ultimate dress up party since 2016. That first year, 13 witches – with characters like Maureen Kilroy and Susan Blakenship – ambushed Beach Boulevard on their way to the Gulfport Casino Ballroom’s annual Monster Mash. It was just a zany thing to do between friends, said King. The next year, 100 people showed up in full garb, minus the disgraced “green face.” “We try not to do ‘green face,’” Higdon said. Are painted faces, fake moles and crooked noses a controversial topic in the witch world?

“Well no, but it’s not very flattering,” Higdon said. “That’s just not what this is about; it’s something more organic and original than that.” In 2019, pre-COVID, over 200 witches and warlocks danced and cackled through downtown Gulfport with no promotion drawing them, aside from a Facebook page announcing the event. The gathering took a health hiatus in 2020, and the group is planning to come back for Halloween 2021 bigger and “witchier” than ever, starting outside the Tiki Bar & Grille, 5519 Shore Blvd. S. and down Beach Boulevard. “It’s girl power...it’s indescribable; it’s like an immediate connection with everyone,” Higdon said. “We always plan a whole parade of witches, but it falls apart every year. People do what they want. If there’s a band they like, they stay and dance.” “Or pillage the town,” King joked. It turns out there are no rules to being a proper witch. There is an official dance – which originated in Germany and is observed amongst Gulfport witches – called the Wolfshäger Hexenbrut: a handful of movements and a lot of broom shaking. “It’s just fun,” King said. “You can just show up and join in, but we try to learn it.”

crime Repeat Offender Arrested for Two-Day Burglary Spree By Abby Baker

Gulfport Police charged suspect Ronald Alfred Stanard, 56, with at least four counts of burglary in Gulfport over the course of two days – Tuesday, October 19 and Wednesday, October 20. Police arrested Stanard on Wednesday, October 20 around 6:30 a.m. on two charges of Burglary to a Conveyance [vehicle] and two counts of Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling. After his latest suspected hit, he was arrested with a stolen backpack, cellphone and laptop from a vehicle on the 2000 block of 54th St. S. The remaining three charges came from suspected burglaries on residences and vehicles between 19th and 23rd Avenues South and between 51st and 56th Streets where Stanard allegedly entered through one victim’s unlocked window by cutting the screen. At the time of his arrest, Stanard had five outstanding warrants: Failure to Appear in Court for Possession of Marijuana, Failure to Appear in Court for Possession of Cocaine,

Failure to Appear in Court for Burglary to a Structure, Failure to Appear in Court for Burglary to a Conveyance and Failure to Appear in Court for Fraudulent Use of a Personal ID. The Gulfport Police Department posted to their Facebook page that, “In two cases, the homes were occupied, and the suspect left when confronted by residents.” “I believe he is a career criminal,” said Gulfport Public Information Officer Sergeant Thomas Woodman. Two other burglary charges are being sent to the State Attorney’s Office for review. “We don’t have enough probable cause to charge him [with those] at this time,” Woodman said. Currently, Stanard’s bail is set at $480,000, but it’s possible that more charges will be added on. “It’s important to remember that locking up is key,” Woodman said. “Most crimes like this are crimes of opportunity.” This is an ongoing investigation by the Gulfport Police Department.

arts Meeting Meatyard

The Off-Kilter World of Artist Rhys Meatyard With a last name like Meatyard, Rhys was destined for something unusual. But Meatyard, who is non-binary, trans-masculine, didn’t get the chance to dive into their funky pop-culture centric work until the age of 40. “I kind of did my life backwards: Got married when I was 17, had three little kids,” Meatyard said. “Doing art wasn’t the responsible choice.” But “doing art” is Meatyard’s new reality; the creator is “full-time, halftime” working as a freelance artist, graphic designer and art director for Friend Club Records. Cemetery Hangs

RHYS MEATYARD

By Abby Baker

Before they touched the graphic design world, Meatyard was working on tombstones and spending more than your average amount of time in St. Petersburg cemeteries. Meatyard’s mother worked as a stone carver for a cemetery, and naturally, Meatyard picked up the knack of designing the marble and granite tombstones themselves. “I didn’t have an ideal childhood; I left home at 15, I had kids really young,” Meatyard said. “But I do remember going to cemeteries and watching my mom stencil the stones. I always liked the typogra“Oh Brother” by Rhys Meatyard.

It’s a big part of who I am.” They’ve Arrived After their long journey back to art, Meatyard now has a degree in fine art from Eckerd College, and a portfolio with wildly different work and mediums, usually with a meta twist. “I live paycheck to paycheck. I’m not killing it on the money front, but I’ve arrived,” the artist said. “After a life-

time of chasing the carrot of financial security.” Meatyard came out as non-binary a little over two years ago, prompting a transition from their previous oil portraits and “dry” work to the layered graphic design images seen today. “Until I had my s**t figured out, it felt like a gigantic joke that I had talent,” Meatyard said. “I could reproduce an image, paint portraits, but there was no soul in it.” Until now. Meatyard creates digital images like the wildly popular Post Malone Cartoon, “Always Hungry,” a play on the rapper’s face tattoo that famously reads “Always Tired.” They came out with a line of soap art with scents like “Smelly Pits” and “Smoky Air” to pay homage to the time of music festivals before COVID-19. Meatyard’s icon is a thick flank of t-bone steak. It all pokes fun at instantly recognizable images, and

Are You My Ghost?

Carol Perry’s Latest Spooky Story Inspired by Gulfport Setting By Amanda Hagood

AMANDA HAGOOD

Maureen Doherty has a lot on her plate. She is trying to rescue a historic hotel, which she has just mysteriously inherited, from its dowdy decor and its sizable debts. The sassy ghost of a Hollywood starlet – one of the many denizens that came with her new property – keeps appearing in her room and stealing her clothes. To make things even worse, a stubborn police detective keeps trying to charge her for the murder of one of her hotel’s guests. And everyone in her new town, a quaint seaside village, seems to know her business before she does. Thank goodness she has a loyal sidekick: Finn, the friendly golden retriever who failed out of guide-dog training for being too easily distracted. engaged as Maureen, its can-do herSuch is the charmingly oddball oine, seeks to save the ailing Haven world of “Be My Ghost“ (Kensington, House hotel and solve the mystery of 2021), a new cozy mystery from Carol the murdered guest, who happens to J. husband returns – from the dead. The most lively folks you’ll meet in Haven are the ghosts, which Perry handles with real skill. With fascinating backstories and vivid personalities, her spirits may be a bit transparent, but they’re definitely not flat. Perry chalks this up to personal experience. As she explains, she lived for many years in a haunted house in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where a friendly ghost appeared many times to family members and friends. Some readers may feel frustrated when the book leaves several key plot points unresolved. Will Maureen succeed in untangling the hotel’s messy finances before it folds? How did Chef Ted earn his dubious rep, and will it come back to haunt him (like so many other things in the hotel do)? And, most importantly, why did the late Penelope Josephine Gray, former proprietress of Haven House, leave the hotel to Maureen – seemingly a perfect stranger? Those readers will just have to wait for the sequel, which is currently in the works. All in all, reading “Be My Ghost” is a bit like raiding your own Hallowe’en candy stash: a sweetly spooky indulgence that’s hard to put down – and may just keep you up all night.

Theatrical Teens of Tomorrow at St. Petersburg City Theatre St. Petersburg City Theatre is doing its part to make sure the future of live performance is in good hands. The company launched Theatrical Teens of Tomorrow this summer, a program for high school students under the direction of Austin Bennett and Susan Demers. “We are a free program for high school students,” says Bennett, “geared toward educating our members on a wide variety of topics involved within the theater. My hopes are to simply grow in size and reach more and more young adults who are interested in theater.” Out of the gate, Bennett and Demers threw a pretty daunting challenge at their young team for their first show: “The Servant of Two Masters” is an 18th century Italian comedy full of interwoven storylines, complex language and demanding physical comedy. “The show was a last-minute choice when we realized our initial show chosen simply wouldn’t work for our developing program,” Bennett says. With a script adapted by Demers, two student directors, and a cast and full tech team of teens, the play came together over

the show we had dress rehearsal every night.” The production ran for four performances in August, with students keeping the audience engaged and guffawing throughout. “My kids put their heart and soul into this production and were incredibly dedicated,” Bennett says. The program is now onto the next adventure: a playwriting workshop to complete a scene involving two to three characters, with a limited set. Students will perform their plays in a showcase on November 6. Like a college-level writing workshop, students come to class with pages for each member to read, and get constructive critiques to make the scriptin-progess stronger. “My hope is that each student walks away with the knowledge to write a flushed-out script for a play, should they choose to,” Bennett says. “More importantly, though, I want my students to be able to have a creative outlet/platform to express themselves and their thoughts. Sometimes, especially nowadays, it’s better to write feelings than say them. It’s also a lot easier for some to express through writing, myself included.” Bennett wants to keep expanding opportunities for young artists in the area. “My goal is to keep our program diverse and fresh,” Bennett told the Gabber, “having a mix of plays, musicals, technical workshops [and] masterclasses.” More at spcitytheatre.org.

"SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK" Local clinic has a medical solution for peripheral neuropathy. “It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.”

This story was shared with us by John S, a Tampa Bay area resident who has peripheral neuropathy. While no one was hurt in this accident, John had suffered almost everyday of his life with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set it and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot. “Typically, the first stage is pain.” shares Dr. Rebecca Gibbons of AAIM| Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on tacks or marbles. This pain eventually subsides and the numbness sets in. Unfortunately the numbness brings with it a whole other host of problems." It is terribly common that peripheral neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life.

John was now reliant on his wife to drive him around, What is even more common, John's general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribe him pills that would ease the pain of his neuropathy. That’s where Dr. Gibbons and her staff at AAIM come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as John,” tells Dr. Gibbons. "They’re in constant pain from neuropathy and it prevents them from not only living their lives but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. Depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden." "I can't lie," admits John "I was skeptical at first but I had run out of options. Nothing else was helping but after about three months into treatment, I was confidently able to drive myself to Publix and to my appointments. Dr. Gibbons gave me my life back."

Time to find out. hauntedflorida.eventbrite.com, 2-3 p.m. Sunday, October 31 FrankenPride Missing Pride season already? This Halloween, St. Pete blends the city’s rainbow culture with all the spookiness of October’s main event. Jam to monster music, drink with witches, vogue with mummies

the gabs Do you believe in ghosts? Photos by Gabrielle Reeder

Carmen Esparza, New Braunfels, Texas: “I would say 110% yes. Personally, I’ve had my own experiences with spirits and whispers and stuff like that. But, I really do believe that there is another side that we don’t really know of and I feel like paranormal investigators have a really interesting job because we don’t know what’s on the other side and they’re there to figure it out.”

Maria Des Dignes, Gulfport: “I totally believe in ghosts. I believe that supernatural activity happens all the time, and if we were more aware we’d be more cognizant of their existence.”

Jake Wesselkamper, Cleveland, Ohio: “I don’t believe in ghosts, but I do believe in an afterlife.”

Nick Danlag, Mount Laurel, New Jersey: “I don’t think ghosts are real. I don’t really believe in anything supernatural, or can’t be proven by science.”

happy birthday, granny!

GINGER JOHNSON

Gulfport resident Ginger Johnson shared photos of her granny, Zelma Williams, who recently turned 100. Johnson tells us that her grandmother grew up in Springfield, Missouri, the middle child of three sisters. She met Johnson’s grandfather when he was in boot camp in Ft. Leonard Wood and they married before the war. He brought her home to Gate City, Virginia and they lived there until 2015. She raised two children, both of whom passed away. Zelma is a lifelong seamstress and a magnificent cook who canned everything from her garden. “We brought her here to live after a fall made it virtually impossible for her to navigate our family farm,” Johnson said. “She helped raise my brother and me. I spent every summer of my childhood at her farm – learned how to sew, cook and be a lady. She is my hero and one of the wisest women I know! I am who I am because of her!”
