Welcome Home, Lieutenant Myers
Gilbert Myers’ Story Myers was born on Feb. 10, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He spent his young life working in steel mills, and by 1927 he was the oldest of six siblings, including his brother Paul, with whom he was very close. In 1929, America was plunged into economic depression, and the Myers’ couldn’t escape. After his father lost his job, and his family lost their houses, Gilbert was forced to drop out of high school to look for a job. In 1936, the family split up. Gilbert’s parents moved to Gulfport, with their three youngest children. He soon joined them, and got a job as a truck driver for Smith Service

When Gulfport resident Jack Corey was a child, his uncle Gilbert Myers enlisted in the military. Myers joined the military in 1940, and left for Camp Blanding on Dec. 2, 1941, five days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. On July 10, 1943, his plane was shot down during the Allied invasion of Sicily. His remains were never recovered, and he was declared missing in action. 80 years later, his remains have been identified, and are on their way back to Gulfport for a funeral.

Why You Should Write Your Own Obituary By Cathy Salustri
Lately, we’ve had some deaths in our family: Three parents in as many months. It’s gotten to the point where friends admit they hesitate to ask “What’s new?” and I can’t blame them. None of our parents wanted an obituary at all, in any paper. We respected their wishes, but last week another death had me wondering: Would we have been the best people to write them if they had wanted them? In a word: No. Those of us who have lived here for a minute knew a wonderful woman, Margo Scannell. When one of her friends, Andrea, told me Margo had died, I felt a sense of loss, not so much for me — although I adored Margo — but for Gulfport. Our community lost a tireless volunteer and cheerleader. For many years, Margo had a hand in everything. Plus, she was smart and funny and sweet and fun and had a sly sense of humor. And yet, her initial obituary contained little about her tremendous efforts to promote and support Gulfport. That’s a lot of life to leave out of someone’s epilogue. It’s not the fault of Margo’s family, who initially wrote the obituary; they wrote what they knew of Margo’s life. But that sparked a series of emails between Andrea and The Gabber Newspaper: Could we help fill in the Gulfport portion of Margo’s obituary, because it would be a shame not to commemorate that part of her life, too? We put her in touch with people who worked with Margo at the Chamber, so Margo’s obituary includes more of what mattered to Margo, as well as what her family and friends want the world to remember. But Andrea’s words stuck with me: “One thing I have learned from Margo’s passing is that everyone should write their own obit so that it includes all that the person thinks is important.”
Thinking about your death... that’s fun, isn’t it? But Andrea has a point. You know what matters to you more than anyone else. What do you want people to know about your life? Write Your Own Obituary? Andrea was 100% right. We should all write our own obituaries. So, in keeping with that, we’re offering anyone the chance to do just that: Pre-submit your obituary and we’ll hold it until it’s time. You can pay now, or instruct someone else to pay for it later — but either way, make sure they know you’ve made this arrangement. It’ll be easier on them, and you’ll get remembered exactly as you would like. One last thing about obituaries... Many people don’t realize obituaries can get expensive. The daily paper in the area charges $12/line, plus extra for a photo, plus extra to list the obituary at legacy.com (which doesn’t cost anything to do, by the way). I find this predatory and cruel, because they’re preying on people when they’re emotionally vulnerable. We don’t intend to profit from death in our community. We charge only enough to cover our print costs; our rates don’t include staff time or profit. It’s your story. Take time to tell it now.

news Remora Keeps the Oceans Clean
Eckerd College Professors Developed an App According to National Geographic, there are currently about 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. They range from hundred-meter tangles of lost fishing nets to worndown microplastic scraps. Some of this plastic waste floats on the surface, but much of it descends to the deep sea. Wherever it’s found, plastic can take upwards of 400 years to degrade. It poses a profound risk to marine animals as it entangles them, gets ingested, or bioaccumulates as toxins in their tissues. Two marine biologists from Eckerd College created Remora, a tool to help people tackle the plastic problem. Use or Refuse The plucky little suckerfish that attaches itself to sharks and other marine animals inspired the Remora app. “Remoras are cleaner fish in the ocean,” notes Dr. Shannon Gowans, professor of marine science and biology. “So it seems like a good blending of the ocean and our approach.” The app allows users to track consumption of common single-use plastics like cups, bags, and straws. It also lets users to track how often they refuse them. Remora launched in May 2023, part of an almost half-million dollar grant Gowans and her colleague Dr. Amy Siuda, associate professor of marine science, received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Trash Free Waters program. Their goals for the app are twofold: to encourage users to reduce their plastic footprints, and to gather data that local governments can use to inform and promote sustainability polices in the future. Social Network Remora also connects users with one another. They can share progress, compare trends, and tackle group challenges. Because entries can be geolocated, users can identify

where single-use plastics are offered and consumed, and learn about alternatives. The creators hope, by harnessing the power of social networks, Remora can help users turn everyday choices into more sustainable habits. Local organizations such as Tampa Bay Watch, St. Pete Youth Farm, and St. Petersburg’s Mayor’s Office of Sustainability have already partnered with Reduce Single Use to promote the app. Stick to It “From the data from the app, we clearly see how challenging it can be to reduce plastic,” says Gowans. “For example, we still see a number of times people report using plastic straws within the City of St. Petersburg, even though there is a city ordinance restricting their use. Policy changes do make more impact on overall plastic pollution,” she concludes. “But there is still a lot of room to go.” With their grant concluding in February 2025, the researchers now focus on building an engaged user base. They want to see an increase in the number of users and posts. Most
importantly, they want to see an increase in the proportion of single use plastic items refused. While the jury is still out on the app’s efficacy, there are early indications that it is making an impact. “We often hear people say that they were unaware of how much plastic they did actually use,” Gowans explains. “We also hear people say that they are more likely to actively refuse plastic if they know they have to record it in the app.” Just like its fishy namesake, Remora shows us many good things can come from just sticking to something.

Life in the Moorish Castle
Throwback to Stetson University College of Law By Mike Davis
STATE ARCHIVES OF FLORIDA/BARNHILL
Bring it back to the ‘60s. This is what life was like for a Stetson Law student.
Life in Gulfport’s pink moorish castle was a lonely existence for single law students like me in 1964 when I started at Stetson Law School. We were intimidated by the odds of making it through — which were probably about 50%. Stetson was not easy. A lot of our comrades transferred to easier schools. Some flunked out. Those of us looking there for young women to date were out of luck. The school had but a handful of female students, all married. My beer budget dramatically decreased and my grades considerably improved after I married during my law school career. I entered after three years of college under the combined degree program which allowed a student who had completed all required college courses to complete law school and college in six years instead of seven. If you failed to complete law school you had neither a law degree nor a college
degree. If you made it through you had both. Being young and naive, I never considered not making it. Stetson then and now trains its students through the time tested program of teaching its students to stand up and defend their analysis of the particular legal principles expressed in reported cases. It is a method to train trial lawyers which works well. When you are in court arguing, nobody helps you. Stetson is ranked #1 in trial advocacy by U.S. News & World Report (2023-2024). Back at Stetson Law In those days, your grade was entirely (or mostly) dependent upon the final exam. No pressure there. We had a mid-semester practice exam so you could see how you were doing. I remember a fellow student telling me after the test results were published that he used to think I was stupid but after seeing

my grades on the practice exam he wanted to be my friend. Lucky me. The school trained us well. My 52 year legal career involved extensive trial work and I am grateful for the training I received at Stetson. I served for almost 20 years as the St. Petersburg City Attorney. One of my classmates had a long tenure as the Orlando City Attorney. One of my January graduating classmates had a long and distinguished career as a circuit judge. The demographics were quite different in those days. The yearbook lists about 70 in the graduating classes for 1967, of which only three were female and none were Black. I was a guest lecturer at the law school for a number of years. My classes were usually about half female, with Black students represented. The school was small enough that you got to know your professors as well as your fellow students. I have fond memories of those intense times at the law school.

It’s Action That Counts Much of the Coreys’ knowledge about Gilbert comes from the letters he wrote to his family and friends throughout his service. In Feb. 1942, Myers wrote a letter that spoke about the national reaction to Pearl Harbor. “Looks like most people are awakening to the fact that we are in war. It takes a bomb to wake
them up, though,” wrote Myers. “A lot them are doing quite a bit, but it’s not enough. Many of them are doing a lot of talking and hell, it’s action that counts.” Following basic training, he passed the tests to enroll in flight cadet school. The night before he left for preflight training, he wrote another letter about his future with the military. “Have a long road to travel and
hope I don’t have to rest,” wrote Myers. “Don’t worry, Hitler will someday know I’m up there, even if I have to leave a calling card. I might not come back, but there’s going to be hell raised ‘til then.” He did his training all around the south, in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia. Finally, he graduated as an officer on Jan. 14, 1943. For the next three months, Gil-

bert flew training missions around the south. One of these flights allowed him to fly over his parents house, flashing his lights a few times to let them know he was there. He continually was asked to train other pilots, but all he wanted was to go and fight. Deployment On April 14, 1943, he left South Carolina, and was sent to North Africa. Well, not directly. “I can say now that I flew to South America and across the Atlantic to Africa,” Myers wrote in a letter to his parents. “I’ve lost Eulie (his plane) and have another one now. I sure would appreciate a good bed to sleep in and a bowl of your chili right now, plus a cold glass of beer. All the Frenchmen drink wine with their meals, but I quit that. It’s ugly stuff.” He said that, since he left America, he’d flown more than 40,000 miles. Myers served as a co-pilot on a B-25 Mitchell bomber, and wrote about his combat experiences, in his last letter to his brother Paul, dated June 29, 1943. “It’s queer at first, and gives you a sickening hollow feeling when the flack bursts all around you and bullets spraying [sic] in every direction, a plane falling in flames over there and another blowing up in mid-air,” wrote Myers. “At first it’s hard to realize that someone is actually trying to kill you. The first mission I had, we dropped our bombs before we were shot at and I actually pitied the poor fellows
who might be killed or wounded by them.” Fall From Grace

The Big 50
Renaissance Dad: A Parent Looks at 50 By Jon Kile
ADOBE STOCK
Renaissance Dad is about to turn the big 50. Here’s a look at a parent at 50 years.
According to society, I have a big birthday coming up. I’m turning 50. Our family doesn’t go too crazy over birthdays. We certainly aren’t of the ilk who celebrate a “birthday-week” or “birth-month.” These are the same people who share pet birthdays on social media. You know who you are.
My birthday is in late November, which means the Thanksgiving holiday usually gobbles it up. It’s kind of nice because there are lots of pre-ordained activities, but it always squashes any attempts to plan a party. The tradition for birthdays in my family was to go out to the same
Mexican restaurant (all I really want in life is for the Gonzalez family to serve me one more plate of tacos at La Fonda). This was before the tradition of interrupting the work of everyone’s server to sing happy birthday to a total stranger. When did that start and how do we get it to stop?

A Parent at 40 As an adult, I like that my birthday is a low-key affair. My 40th was interesting. We took our two young kids to California to visit family. We decided to take advantage of a free-on-your-birthday ferry ride to Catalina Island. When we hit traffic on PCH, we almost missed our boat with our family of four, plus my dad and his wife crammed into a rented Dodge Journey. Our baby daughter could sense the tension in the air and began crying intensely, only stopping to barf curdled milk into her car seat. I got us lost in the industrial side of the port among the shipping containers and cranes. It looked like a place where a high speed chase in CHiPs would end in a series of explosions. Help me, Ponch! My dad was enjoying watching his youngest child manage a family travel crisis. While I hoped a giant magnet would pick the car up and drop us in a crusher, he got out of the vehicle to escape the stench of spoiled dairy, and scurried up a rocky embankment to see if he could see our boat. By the time the sun set on Avalon, we had a good laugh about it, and some great Mexican food. (I’m not lying when I tell you we saw Eric Estrada in the airport going home.) Parenting has a way of aging us beyond the steady passage of time.
I was 36 years old before I became a father. I had dark brown hair back then. A Parent at 50 Now, my kids ask questions like, “What color was your hair before it turned gray?” My wife is five years younger than me, which makes her eternally immune from being considered old in our house. Our 13-year-old is beginning to get to the point where he thinks his old man is out of touch. He got in the car the other day and I was already listening to some music he likes. He said, “You were listening to Green Day,” as if he caught me wearing Crocs and a hoodie like half his friends. How do I tell him that I was 16 when they released their first record? Green Day is to him what Perry Como was to me when I was his age. Perry Como, kid! I have a few good years left in me. Sure, I’m going out for a free birthday dinner for my 50th (please don’t sing in any language), and I plan to be in bed by 10 o’clock. But I’m not to the point where the height of my socks makes me look confused or my slang is offensive at the dinner table. But kids, your friends are around a lot and I can act old in the worst way if you aren’t nice to me.

Watch Out For Mail Thieves Pinellas Mail Theft on the Rise Someone is stealing the mail. St. Petersburg and other Pinellas communities experienced a recent rise in mail theft, according to police and financial crime watchdogs. Throughout the past six months, the Gulfport Police Department received multiple mail theft reports. That includes five instances of stolen packages from a mail room area at the 3209 58th St. S. property. According to GPD, this occurred between Aug. 11 and Sept. 9. Also, Gulfport police saw three mail thefts from a U.S. Postal Service blue collection box near 31st Avenue South and Beach Boulevard South in August. At GPD’s request, The Gabber Newspaper provided footage of the alleged theft from its webcam. The GPD said thieves stole a check from a home mailbox in June and from the mail area at the condo development at 6025 Shore Blvd. S. in August. “We have received multiple bulletins from various agencies in reference to robberies of mail carriers targeting arrow keys,” said GPD Sergeant Thomas Woodman. Arrow keys access blue collection bins, locked mailboxes at businesses, apartments, and parcel lockers. Additionally, there have been reports of mail thieves impersonating USPS carriers by other U.S. police. Yolanda Fernandez, Community Awareness Division Manager with the St. Petersburg Police Depart-

ment, also saw an increase in crimes linked to mail theft. “The simple answer is yes, our economic crimes detectives have seen an uptick in forged checks that are most likely a result of mail theft,” Fernandez said. She said SPPD refers mail theft cases to the U.S. Postal Service. office. Woodman also suggests taking mail containing checks directly to the post office rather than using blue collection boxes. “This would drastically reduce opportunities for the suspects,” Woodman said. Kraebel said if checks or other monetary payments sent through the mail are delayed recipients should contact the sender. Woodman also echoes USPS recommendations of making sure to collect received mail daily. Furthermore, use gel pens when writing checks to help protect them from getting changed and forged by thieves. Kraebel said there were 1,500 arrests for mail-related threats in fiscal year 2021. The U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen) issued an alert earlier this year regarding a marked rise in mail thefts and accompanying check fraud. In 2021, banks field more than 350,000 reports with FinCen regarding potential check fraud. In 2022, that check fraud number reached 680,000.

A Reader Asks About the Status of the Damaged Marina Sea Walls
CAMERON HEALY
When will repairs for the two damaged seawalls in Gulfport occur?
Question: I didn’t see any money to repair the two seawalls that have collapsed. One is by Osgood Point leading into the Gulfport Municipal Marina. The other is on the south side of the Gulfport Municipal Marina. The parking lot has collapsed at spots. When are these repairs scheduled to be repaired? —Dianne Benedetti Answer: The Gabber Newspaper spoke with Marina Director Denis Frain about the future of the seawalls in Gulfport. “All three seawalls are in the permit stages at this point. We hope to begin construction in 45 days,” said Frain. On Oct. 17, Gulfport City Council approved resolution 2023-100, which allows Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. to run a Marina Community Engagement Concept study. This will let
residents voice their opinions on what is to happen with the marina, and how it can be improved. The results
of this will work towards making decisions for what to do with the seawalls in Gulfport.

business beat Thrift Treasures and the Italian American Society Stay Up-to-Date With Pinellas Businesses By Amanda Hagood and Cameron Healy
Tired of paying full price for clothes, books, and home goods? Give Sophie’s Attic a try. The neighborhood thrift shop was named after Gulfport First United Methodist Church member Sophie Hern. It was she who persuaded her pastor to buy the house where the shop is located in 1988 – and then contributed its first donations from her own attic and closets. Sophie’s Attic packs a surprisingly wide range of items into its small footprint. You’ll find men and women’s clothes, scrubs, shoes, kitchenware, books, records and CD’s, picture frames, knickknacks, crystal, and a really excellent Christmas shelf. A changing room is provided for customer convenience. Sophie’s prices are reasonable and manager Patti Borland says she’s willing to negotiate on many items. With a friendly volunteer staff and an ever-changing selection of treasures, shopping at Sophie’s is a wonderful experience. I personally came home with a set of vintage corn-on-the-cob serving dishes and a covered bridge for my Christmas village. And the best part of all? arts The Power of the White and Red Rabbits ‘White Rabbit Red Rabbit’ at American Stage The first rule of White Rabbit Red Rabbit is that you do not talk about White Rabbit Red Rabbit. How do you review a show that has a different cast every night when you don’t want to give away anything about the show, because that’s part of its charm — although charm is really not the right word? Reader, I’m showing up for this review with as little knowledge as how to do that as Dylan Barlowe had on Nov. 2 when he stepped onstage and saw the script for White Rabbit Red Rabbit for the first time. That’s not Barlowe’s fault; that’s one of the (many) conceits that surround this show, written by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour.
AMERICAN STAGE
By Cathy Salustri
White Rabbit Red Rabbit Rules This is not your typical theatrical performance. There are a few things you need to know about why you can’t know more about why you want to see the show (seriously). 1. White Rabbit Red Rabbit has a different actor every night. 2. Once an actor performs the show, that actor can never perform it again. 3. The actor does not see the script until he steps on stage the night he performs the show. 4. That means no rehearsals. 5. That doesn’t mean it’s improv, although at times it feels as though it is. The Show Things get weird, but — and this is important — this is not Theater of the Absurd. This is a one-person show, if you don’t count the copious amounts of compulsory audience participation (which people who hate involuntary audience participation undoubtedly

will and should either suck it up or stay home). The show runs slightly longer than an hour, and while the script remains the same, the show you see depends on the actor. On opening night, Dylan Barlowe took the stage. Does his character have a name? I don’t know. I’m sure the script is out there if you Google, but I didn’t, because the show’s appeal — I believe this more now after experiencing it — comes, in part, from not knowing what will happen. And the audience, same as Barlowe, had no clue what was about to happen. Barlowe put forth a heartfelt, amazing performance in White Rabbit Red Rabbit. Barlowe’s a Pinellas County Center for the Arts graduate who went on to Columbia College Chicago before returning home to act on stages across Tampa Bay, and Tampa Bay should count itself
lucky that he did. Every performance of White Rabbit Red Rabbit will differ based on the performer and the audience, so I can’t speak to what you’ll see at another show, but Barlowe’s time on stage made for an astounding 65 minutes of theater. He brought a fresh-faced earnestness to the first half of the performance. This part of the show felt a bit like performative late-night talk show comedy, sort of Jimmy Fallon comes to a small space near downtown St. Pete, but funnier. The second half offered Barlowe the chance to show us his serious side, and he did not let the chance pass him by. Although he hadn’t had the chance to rehearse, we could almost see his process as he read the words on the page, interpreted them, and, an instant later, presented them to us. While comedy proves more challenging for an actor (although it looks deceptively

easy), there’s no doubt both parts of White Rabbit Red Rabbit forced Barlowe to dig deep — quickly and convincingly. I can’t wait to see him in whatever show comes next for him — look for his name and plan to see whatever show he gets cast in next. See the Show While I’d love to write about about White Rabbit Red Rabbit’s emotional and theatrical manipulation and what the script suggests about humanity, I can’t. It would ruin an thought-provoking, unsettling, delightful evening of theater. Here’s where you can see it next. White Rabbit Red Rabbit. Various locations, times, and artists throughout Tampa Bay. A Love Story for the Sunshine State
Florida Humanities Celebrates 50 Years With “Once Upon a Time in Florida” 2023 isn’t the easiest time to be a Floridian. The Sunshine State is troubled by both divisive politics and growing environmental risks. Housing and insurance costs have many of us wondering how long we can afford to stay in paradise. Some might say that what this state needs now is love, sweet love. And that’s exactly what Florida Humanities’ new collection, Once Upon a Time in Florida: Stories of Life in the Land of Promises (Florida Humanities, 2023) delivers. It’s 330 glossy, lavishly illustrated pages of Florida love.
AMANDA HAGOOD
By Amanda Hagood
Fifty Years of Florida Humanities Once Upon a Time in Florida celebrates the 50th anniversary of Florida Humanities, the Florida affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Editor Jacki Levine points out that Florida’s NEH affiliate has always been distinctive in “zeroing in” its programming on its home state — a topic as juicy as a Florida orange. “The state has been portrayed as a sunny paradise or a temple to all that’s crass and pretentious,” Levine writes in the volume’s introduction. “But the complex reality has been harder to fathom.” The collection explores many corners of that reality that complex reality. It features stories on Florida’s early and modern history, the arts, nature and ecology, and cultural identities across the state. Its 50 chapters are drawn from the pages of FORUM, the monthly magazine of Florida Humanities, which Levine edited from 20172021.
A new collection, Once Upon a Time in Florida, features 50 extraordinary stories about Florida’s arts, letters, history, folklore, and architecture.
State of Inspiration One of the many charms of Once Upon a Time in Florida is the sheer diversity of its contents. In one sitting, you can learn about coquina construction in St. Augustine or go folklore hunting with Zora Neale Hurston. You can venture into space with former Florida congressman Bill Nelson, or uncover America’s first free Black settlement, Fort Mose. You can glimpse the happily-ever-afters of elderly Jewish residents of South Beach, photographed by late Floria photographer Andy Sweet. The book has something for everyone, all delivered by some of the state’s premier scholars and writers.

My favorite section is “This State of Inspiration,” which looks at Florida through the lens of arts and letters. These chapters explore the rich creative vein running through our state. Here you can meet crime writer Edna Buchannan, singer-songwriter Tom Petty, and Seminole Indian poet laureate Moses Jumper Jr. You can learn that in 1900, James Weldon Johnson penned a song for children at his Jacksonville school to sing for Lincoln’s birthday. That song? “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Don’t Leave It on the Table The collection is a balm for weary Florida souls, capturing so much of what is unique, fascinating, and extraordinary about our state. The handsome hardcover volume is elegantly formatted and filled to the brim with historical images and vibrant contemporary photography. It would be quite at home on the coffee table with your volumes on Lego art and Japanese interior design. But take my advice and don’t leave it there.

food Authentic Cuban Delights
Azúcar Cuban Café Opens in St. Petersburg By Morgan Banno
MORGAN BANNO
Azúcar Cuban Café has an array of goodies for you to try.
Cuban food in Florida is off-thecharts delicious. Outside of mainland Cuba, I’d brag that we have the best Cuban food on earth. A few years ago, I served as culinary lead for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival in Miami. Sure, it was fun cooking alongside celebrity chefs and meeting throngs of stars who attended the event, but my favorite thing about Miami was the abundance of authentic Cuban dishes right at my knife tips. Thankfully, we now have some killer Cuban cuisine here in west St. Pete. Azúcar Cuban Café is one of the newest eateries to pop up, and here you can enjoy everything from cortados and café con leche to croquetas and quesito. Classic Cuban Food Azúcar Cuban Café opened in August, and while they took a brief hiatus for a hot minute, they’re back in action serving all the classic Cuban delights. Azúcar is a tiny café, sporting only eight seats inside, so I advise taking your order to go.
But this won’t cheat you on taste. The menu highlights all kinds of Cuban fare for a variety of tastes. Whether you want Cuban breakfast, a grab-and-go sandwich, or a whole plate of tasty eats, Azúcar is the place to go. I ordered the Cuban toast ($2.99) which was lightly pressed and buttered, along with the homemade breakfast empanada ($4.99) with eggs, sausage and cheese in hand-molded crust. The empanada was crispy and loaded with filling; think upscale breakfast Hot-Pocket. It’s definitely worth a try. In addition, I also tried the signature black bean soup ($4). The stewed black beans are laced with bacon and garnished with fresh green olives, giving the soup a slightly briny flavor that complements the creamy black beans. If you like cheese, I highly recommend the bolitas de queso ($5.99). The fried cheese balls are rich yet light, and they practically melt in your mouth. Each bite was gooey with a soft, cheesy center and lightly battered for a coating. I could have

eaten an entire bucket of them. For a savory option, I recommend the fried plantain balls ($5.99) — sweet plantains stuffed with beef picadillo — yum. But Wait, There’s More No visit to a Cuban restaurant is complete without a café Cubano ($2.49) and Azúcar’s is sweet, strong, and will give you that morning jolt of energy. Pair it with a few croquetas de jamon ($.99 each) and you’ll be all set. If you stop by for lunch, Azúcar offers a combo meal with half a Cuban sandwich and a 12-ounce cup of black bean soup for only $12.99. I also recommend the lechon plato ($12.99) with pulled pork, onions, olives, riche, beans, and fried plantains. Regardless of what you order, you’ll love the authentic Cuban flavors. If you’re like me and enjoy a touch of spice to your food, be sure to sample of Azúcar’s hot sauces. They offer both a verde and rojo sauce that will add sweet heat to any of your delicious delectables. 7224 Central Ave, St. Petersburg.

Meet Gulfport’s Plein Air Painters
ELANA BOSES
Gulfport Plein Air Painters (from left) Kim Wilder and Jane Haskins paint the “green wall with the purple doors” on the corner of 30th Avenue South and Beach Boulevard.
Strolling down Beach Boulevard on a Wednesday morning, you are likely to encounter a pack of wild painters, painting “en plein air,” the French expression for “in the open air.” In Gulfport, experienced artists as well as enthusiastic novices come together to enjoy nature, community, and the challenging task of painting in public. French impressionists created the practice of plein air painting, born from their desire to paint light, and to capture its evanescent qualities. When painting outside, the inherent challenges of a changing environment are compounded by inevitable distractions. Yet, the energy of the community and the connection to nature provide a special kind of magic. Accomplished Gulfport painters find the practice to be a worthwhile endeavor to stretch their artistry. Gulfport Plein Air Painters The Gulfport Plein Air painters are out and about from November to

May. They choose a different location each week. “I enjoy plein air painting, because I do my best work in nature, painting outside, immersed in the landscape,” says group organizer Nancy Poucher. “It provides engagement, interactive relationships, connection, and a sense of awe, which hopefully comes through my pastels onto paper.” Fleeting light isn’t the only hurdle to painting outdoors. Inevitably, painting in public, outdoors provides distractions, whether it be curious onlookers, gusts of wind, or simply a change in temperature. In addition, the transient nature of the practice forces artists to condense materials into something portable. It pushes them to use only what’s necessary, therefore streamlining their process. Gulfport’s Plein Air Painters use a variety of mediums, from pastels to acrylic and oil paints to watercolors.
Plein Air Etiquette Painting outside in a coastal vacation town definitely invites human interaction. However, there is not an agreed upon “etiquette” for interacting with a working plein air painter. Painters who require uninterrupted focus often display a little sign. Some painters may wear a t-shirt with answers to many common questions printed on the back. Most painters, though, welcome the interaction, and some continue to paint while chatting. Professional artists who sell their work often welcome the opportunity to market an upcoming gallery opening or show. “I like to challenge myself to stay focused,” Poucher says. “I invite the opportunity to talk to people about art, but then I have to dive back into my flow and stay focused, or I won’t finish the painting in time.” The finite time frame for painting invites a spontaneity and freshness to the art without room for overthink-

ing and meddling. Kim Wilder paints lifelike pet portraits professionally. She reminds herself “the goal isn’t to create a detailed realistic painting of the landscape; it’s to capture the essence of the scene and the light.”

Brenda McMahon Gallery (2901 Beach Blvd. S., Gulfport) offers paintings of iconic Gulfport landmarks such as the “green building with the purple doors” (formerly called the Toy Factory) or the historic Gulfport Casino, painted by plein air painters such as Poucher and Jane Haskins. Deserie Valloreo, a plein air artist herself, also provides a space for local plein air artists to connect with art enthusiasts and collectors at the DRV Gallery (5401 Gulfport Blvd. S., Gulfport). Valloreo explains how plein air can also be a great practice for beginners. “I refer to plein air as bootcamp,” she says. “It challenges the artist to ramp up their skills quickly. Painting with a plein air group provides an avenue to give and receive feedback on your work while building relationships with other artists in the community.” In the coming months, there will be many opportunities to see Gulfport and visiting artists’ plein air artwork. During the month of February, Catherine A. Hickman Theater (5501 27th Ave. S., Gulfport) will host the Gulfport Plein Air Painter’s show, Colors of Gulfport. The Gulfport Merchants Chamber have the third annual In Plein Sight event scheduled in April. Artists from throughout the region will spend a week painting beautiful Gulfport landscapes, and the week culminates with a show and competition. “When I paint the same scene with a group of artists, I love to see how we each bring our unique styles and palettes to the canvas or paper,” artist Paula Roy says. “When you’re really familiar with the artists, you can pick out which pieces were done by which artist. I love how individual this work can be!”

ANDREA COVELL
Marguerite Ann (Whelan) Scannell Marguerite Ann (Whelan) Scannell of Gulfport, formerly of Stoneham & Charlestown, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023. She was 81 years of age. Born on Thursday, Jan. 29, 1942 in Boston, Marguerite was the loving daughter of the late Edward L. Whelan and Kathleen (Maher) Whelan. Margo, as she was known by her family and friends, was a mother to all who knew her. She was always the life
of the party. Margo loved dressing up and having a great time. The most thoughtful person anyone would know. Margo always remembered your birthday, anniversary or any special occasion. She would have a special card or gift that was well thought out. Always rooting for the underdog and always there to help you out of whatever bind you were in. She lived with great purpose and grace. There will be a large void left in many of our lives, however, her legacy will continue to impact many generations to come. Marguerite was the beloved wife of the late Dennis F. Scannell, Jr. She was the devoted mother of Deborah O’Neil and her husband John, Jean Brian and her husband Ron, John Scannell and his girlfriend Shaowen Chou, Dennis Scannell and his girlfriend Laura Almeida, and the late Robert Scannell. The cherished grandmother of Zachary Brian and his wife Kelly, Victoria Brian, Isabella Scannell and her fiancé Kyle Lussier, Ryan O’Neil, Dennis Scannell, Shayne O’Neil, and the late Anne Elizabeth O’Neil. Marguerite was the dear sister of Edward Whelan and his wife Carol, Kathleen “Cookie” Giordano, and Andrew Whelan. She was the loving sister-in-law of Beth McLaughlin and Kathy Benner. In the late 1980s, Margo and Dennis retired to Gulfport. Margo embraced her new community by often volunteering for the City she loved. She donated her time as Office Manager for the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce and also for Pink Flamingo Tours, Springfest and Geckofest events. Along with her circle of friends, Margo won numerous best costume awards at the annual Gecko Ball. Nominated by City Mayors, Margo served on the Gulfport Senior Advisory Committee on Aging from 2009-2018 and the Gulfport Preservation Committee from 2012-2015. For all her efforts, Margo was presented with the Spirit of Gulfport Award in 2010. A celebration of life in Gulfport will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of Margo’s favorite charities in memory of her son, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), 199 Water Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10038. A memorial condolence may be sent to barilefuneral. com or facebook.com/BarileFamilyFuneralHome.
