Join the Summer Reading Challenge at your local library

Gazette and Diary Magazine

M

ONMOUTHSHIRE’S community hubs and libraries are calling on the county’s children to sign up for the Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge 2018. The Summer Reading Challenge asks 4 to 11 year olds to borrow and read any six library books and its Mischief Makers theme is inspired by the much-loved children's title, the Beano, which celebrates its 80th anniversary. To take part in Mischief Makers, all children need do is sign up at their nearest library or community hub where they’ll receive a colourful collector’s map of Beanotown to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey. Exploring the map will reveal a hidden treasure chest full of pranks designed for the ultimate mischief maker! As children pick a book for the Summer Reading Challenge, they’ll collect special stickers to add to their map, helping Dennis, Gnasher and friends solve clues and discover the treasure, having lots of fun and adventures along the way. A packed programme of events and activities is planned for families to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge, including story-telling from Louby Lou. Residents should contact their local library or community hub or go to monmouthshire.gov.uk to find how to participate. Sue Wilkinson, CEO of The Reading Agency which produces the Summer Reading Challenge said: “We believe that everything changes when we read and we know from our research how much fun families and children have when taking part in the Challenge. Mischief Makers offers intergenerational appeal and we hope this family-friendly accessible theme will inspire more children than ever to read over the holidays and make use of their local library throughout the summer and beyond." County Councillor Bob Greenland, Monmouthshire’s cabinet member with responsibility for community hubs added: “Reading can take a back seat during the long summer holidays if children don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. “This can cause problems for schools in the new term but the annual Summer Reading Challenge is a highlight of the holiday for many children and can only be beneficial if it inspires them to get stuck into a good book.” Monmouthshire Librarian Fiona Ashley commented: “As I visit school assemblies across the county to tell children about the Summer Reading Challenge, I notice how enthusiastic they are. Last year, 915 children started the Summer Reading Challenge and we are confident that even more will sign up this time.”

HEY are often called the golden years and now, new research has revealed that over 50s are living healthier lifestyles than ever before, being more adventurous, less body conscious and more physically active than their millennial counterparts. In fact, they’re even counting sex among their favourite ways to stay in shape! The survey of 1,000 millennials and over 50s, conducted by orthopaedic support specialist Neo G, revealed that over 50s exercise for an average of 26 minutes more than those in their 20s and 30s each week, and experience less barriers to exercise than younger people. Millennials are more than twice as likely than the over 50s to be self-conscious about their bodies, with 12 per cent of those in their 20s and 30s blaming poor body image for preventing them from exercising compared to just 5 per cent of over 50s. A fear of looking stupid (12 per cent) and worries about not being fit enough (15 per cent) were also cited as some of the biggest barriers stopping millennials from exercising. The research also revealed that over 50s are more likely to take time for their health and wellbeing now they’re older, with nearly one in five (19 per cent) saying they actually exercise more in their 50s than they ever did in their 20s. Walking/hiking was named as the over 50s favourite type of exercise, with two thirds (67 per cent) naming this their favourite way to keep fit. However, sex also rated highly, with 14 per cent of over 50s using this activity to keep in shape, coming above yoga (7 per cent), weight training (5 per cent) golf (4 per cent) and Pilates (3 per cent). The top five favourite types of exercise for the over 50s are: Walking/hiking - 67 per cent Swimming – 19 per cent Cycling - 16 per cent Sex - 14 per cent Yoga - 7 per cent Commenting on the findings, Paul Starkey, Managing Director at Neo G, said: “People often think that as you get older you need to sacrifice some of the things you once enjoyed doing, but as our research shows, the over 50s are certainly not slowing down when it comes to keeping fit and are actually in better shape than those in their 20s and 30s.It’s never too late to get into exercise and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, but it’s important to make sure you’re well equipped to get the most out of your exercise regime. Support your body by investing in high quality orthopaedic supports or a Vitamin supplement such as Daily Defence, to ensure you can reap the benefits of an active lifestyle without the risk of injury.”

John Bishop on why he and Piers Morgan will never be in chat show competition

JOHN Bishop might be famous for telling jokes, but in recent years he's taken on a more serious TV role. He tells Georgia Humphreys about making his talk show a success, plus his emotional interview with Paddy McGuinness.

J

OHN Bishop is deducing why people like being interviewed by him. After all, with a stellar line up for the fourth series of John Bishop: In Conversation With... the Liverpudlian comedian, 51, must be doing something right. He even managed to secure an interview with David Walliams after he'd turned down appearing on Piers Morgan's "more established" (as Bishop puts it) show. "There might be an argument to say, 'Well, that's because you're softer on them, or you're nicer on them'," remarks Bishop, who worked in sales until he found fame in middle age with standup. "But I don't think, if you watch the show, that that's the case. I just think that people don't think they're going to get stitched up." The amiable TV personality adds: "Piers is good at loads of things and his show's been a great success and, you know, fair play to him. "But I wouldn't want our show to be in competition because I just think we're a very different beast." The UK TV original series, which airs on W, sees Bishop focus on just one guest each episode, resulting in revealing and intimate chats with a range of people in the public eye (memorable past guests include Jeremy Corbyn, Lindsay Lohan and Katie Price). This time round, the likes of Paddy McGuinness, Professor Green, Will Young, Ruth Jones and Gabby Logan will be opening up to the comic, about everything from their careers to their childhoods to their mental health. It was the interview with his "good mate" McGuinness that Bishop found particularly emotional watching back in the edit recently. The Take Me Out presenter has discussed his twins' autism in the past. But, as he told his interviewer, he'd never talked about his feelings in as much detail as we will see him do in episode three. "I watched this show and cried, and said to him, 'Mate, it's really strong'," recalls Bishop. "And it's not because somebody's cried, it's because you've got somebody revealing a part of themselves that I don't think they would ever do anywhere else." Professor Green, meanwhile, is known for being a very open celebrity, but still surprised Bishop with how much detail he went into about the past. "Everyone knows he got stabbed in the neck with a bottle. But how that affected his view of mortality, of what he should do with his life, about his own mental health and then how that fed into his understanding of his father's mental health... all of those things you don't see when you read the newspaper headline, 'He was stabbed in the neck'." When it comes to his interview approach, down-to-earth Bishop, who got his big break after appearing on the

Jonathan Ross show in 2010, thinks it's important he doesn't have, say, an earpiece in with someone telling him what to say next. "This show is predicated on the fact that my second question is based on your answer to the first question," he explains matter-of-factly. "I understand there's a story behind them, but I don't go in with an agenda about, 'Right, let's get to that point,' because when you want someone to talk about themselves for an hour, you will get to that point anyway, you don't have to go diving into it. "If there's been a significant moment in their life, they'll tell you about it." If the tables were turned, is there a subject he would really like to open up about, like McGuinness did? "Everybody has layers..." suggests the star, who has three grown-up sons with childhood sweetheart Melanie. "The biggest thing that's ever happened in anyone's life is your family, isn't it? They're the most important thing in your life, and they're the only thing that can elicit a reaction like that. But for me, I haven't got something where I go, 'God, I'm desperate to say this'." Smiley Bishop is clearly proud of his series: "Now that we've done 40 hours of television in a short space of time, you know it's got legs," he quips. And, as a football fan, (he supports Liverpool FC and even used to play semi-professionally himself for Southport FC) there are still guests he is desperate to meet on screen in the future. "I'll be honest, the list that we put forward, every year Steven Gerrard is at the top." But there is the odd challenge he faces as a chat show host. "Coming up with guests when you're trying to match an audience expectation is difficult, because Steven Gerrard might be great for me, but may not be suitable for the channel," he says. "So, that's the only limited thing. But for me, if I was doing this as the only thing I did on telly for the rest of my career, I'd be happy with it." What about following in the footsteps of fellow funny Briton James Corden, and trying to make it in the States? "We could go and do an American version of it, definitely. So, would I?" He pauses. "Yeah. That should be the headline."

Kids of all ages love Usk Show H

ELD at Usk Showground, on Saturday September 8, Usk Show has an excellent reputation as a local agricultural show, however, there is so much more to see that just livestock and plenty for children of all ages to enjoy! At the Junkfish tent, children can have a go at brilliant free make-and-take crafts, get involved in a spot of painting or play with their Giant Junk Ball Run or their Circus Toys – all for FREE. In the Steam Corner they can take a ride on the miniature railways and see all the scale models built by enthusiasts on display. In the Livestock Area they can see cattle, sheep, pigs and goats of all breeds, shapes and sizes and watch the competitions. Our Horse Area has in-hand and ridden showing classes, plus dressage and show jumping for them to admire. “We have rabbits from the South Wales Rabbit Club, plus the Poultry Tent will be filled with chickens, ducks and geese. This is an excellent opportunity to see all of these creatures up close,” said a show spokesman. “Our Countryside Ring is busy from 10:30am with falconry, gun dogs, working horses, bassett hounds, alpacas, vintage tractors and a fabulous Dog & Duck display from The Runner Pack, which the children can get involved with. “In the Main Ring during the afternoon children meet the hounds from the Curre and Llangibby Hunt, as well as cheer on their favourites in the Pony Club Mounted Games. Our Main Attraction this year is the spectacular Cavalry of Heroes Medieval Jousting display, performing at 1.30pm and 4.45pm – choose your favourite Knight to cheer on! Later on you can see the Livestock Grand Parade, as well as the popular Rugby 7s tournament and, weather permitting, hot air balloons taking off from the main ring to end the day,” she said. “For children who want to take part in competitions, we have Young Handler classes in our sheep, cattle and pig classes open to Usk Farmers’ Club family members. For young equestrians we have Lead Rein and First Ridden classes in our M&M and BSPS sections, Mini Show Jumping and even a Fancy Dress class for riders under 16! “Our Enter-on-the-Day Companion Dog Show also has a Fancy Dress class as well as a Best Young Handler competition. If they are budding Monty Dons there are Under 12s flower and vegetable competitions in the Horticulture section, and in Homecraft we have a whole Junior Section with classes for children of all ages up to 16 in cooking, art, crafts and photography, which make a spectacular display of the children’s work, something that they should all be proud of. Is your dog getting itchy?

I

TCHY skin can be an uncomfortable experience for any of us including our furry friends. This can be heightened during these warmer months. An itchy dog is usually an unhappy dog, so owners are quite often anxious to try and find its cause in order to support their dogs skin and coat. Spotting the causes of an itching dog sounds simple, but can be a bit more complicated. To help with this, Lintbells, manufacturers of premium natural pet supplements has put together some useful tips that could help detect the triggers of itchy skin and keep your dog’s skin and coat in tip top condition. Be cautious after walks - With the glorious spells of sunshine and warmer climate now, pollen counts can be high and can cause irritation in both humans and dogs. That’s right – dogs get hay fever too! To properly look after your dog’s skin during pollen season, ensure you are checking their skin and coat, particularly hairy, fluffy or curly haired dogs or those with long floppy ears, after walks. Check for any grass seeds on their coat, between the pads and down their ears, and wipe them down with a damp towel after any time outside. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to help your dog if their itches are due to environmental factors. Start by avoiding their triggers – where practical – then boost their skin’s natural defences by adding an Omega 3 & 6 supplement like YuMEGA Itchy Dog to their food. Hair loss and moulting - Excessive hair loss and moulting are one of the main signs that indicate your dog may be experiencing skin complaints. If you do start to spot this in your pooch, there are a number of things you can do to help. To remove dirt and debris it is important to ensure you are brushing their coat daily, carefully combing or cutting out any matted hair as this will significantly benefit your furry friend’s skin and coat. You could also consider using dog friendly shampoo that is designed to soothe irritated skin. Fleas, ticks and mites - Sometimes, even the cleanest dogs can pick up fleas, if appropriate treatment is not applied regularly - although fleas and ticks may not always be visible, they can jump on and off your dog quite easily. Fleas can result in frequent and severe itching, hair loss and scabs on their skin. If fleas have already entered your home, it may be a good idea to use spot-on treatment and keep track of how often it needs to be reapplied. When it comes to ear mites or a dust mite problem, it’s always best to seek the advice of a vet for expert help. Flaking out - Dry and itchy skin along with dandruff is a very common tell-tale sign that your four-legged friend’s skin needs some serious TLC. You should consider bathing your dog regularly using dog specific shampoos that are designed to soothe irritated skin. It’s important to remember that while every dog has got to scratch sometimes - and that’s completely normal - incessantly licking, scratching, biting and chewing to the point of wounding is a symptom of an underlying pathology. If you’re concerned about your itching dog, we’d always recommend a trip to the vet and make sure your pet pooch is happy and healthy always.

There’s no rules and no restrictions with Bake Off star Nadiya Hussain She's won Bake Off, put out a slew of cookbooks and is always on the telly - Nadiya Hussain tells Ella Walker that food is meant to be fun. ADIYA Hussain is a total rule-breaker these days. "I'm a part of two very different worlds - I'm British and I'm Bangladeshi," the 33-year-old explains, "and because I'm part of these two amazing worlds, I have no rules and no restrictions." That’s why, three years on from winning Great British Bake Off, the Luton-born home cook is back with a new cookbook and accompanying BBC series, Nadiya's Family Favourites, in which she comprehensively "demolishes" the pork pie. In fact, she's entirely reimagined the classic picnic snack, and gone and stuffed a hot water crust pastry case with a samosa filling. "I've taken the pork out and put the samosa in," she says, giddy on her own culinary power. "I have no rules, and because I have no respect whatsoever for tradition, I can do whatever I want, and that's why I feel so lucky." This recipe collection also sees her flip a baked cheesecake upside down, make a single eclair into a colossal cakey-roll, invent a fish finger lasagne, swap the

prawn in prawn toast for chicken, and 'spike' a dish of macaroni cheese with piccalilli - the woman's a maverick. Food, Hussain says, is meant to be fun and experimented with. "It's an expression of love. Why not mess about with it? It's fun and it's exciting; food is meant to bring joy and happiness - and bring families together." She might be all about breaking rules in the kitchen, but she does have rules when it comes to sitting down to dinner. "There's one rule in our house and it is: 'This is not a restaurant, you will eat what you're given'. That's it, so if you don't eat what you're given, then you go to bed hungry, it's as simple as that." It's tough love, but Hussain doesn't feel guilty if her trio of kids - Musa, Dawud and Maryan - refuse to eat what's available. "I feel a bit bad that they didn't eat, but they've learnt through time that she is not messing around. They know 'If I don't eat this dinner now, she is not going to feel guilty and come and feed me in the middle of the night'." Luckily, she and husband Abdal have managed to produce children that aren't fussy-eaters, so much so that the week before we chat, she had all three begging her to dole out fragrant bowlfuls of fish head curry. "They were all over it like, 'Mummy! Please can we have that right now?' I was like, 'No, that's tomorrow's dinner, I've just cooked it early, you've got to have this instead', and they're like, 'No, no, no, please, please, please can we have it?' They just love fish head curry - and tripe!" Tripe is not fashionable. Tripe is white, blubbery, cow stomach. Tripe cannot compete with the likes of fish fingers and pizza when it comes to child-friendly food - right? "They love tripe!" Hussain promises. "Cook it down slowly for six hours, get it really soft - I cook it with a bit of vanilla just to get rid of some of the smells, some vegetables, then I take it out, pat it dry, cover it in flour and egg, then I crisp it up and slice it." She serves it in a curry sauce with rice, and convincingly makes tripe sound delicious. Plus, it's "cheap as chips" and when it comes to costs, as well as health, Hussain is ever aware. "Everything in moderation... I can cook all the food that I cook, but we have balance and that's really important," she says. "I shouldn't feel guilty for cooking the things that I love, or that my family love. We eat, we enjoy it, we have balance - why not?" RELAX IN COMFORT THIS AUTUMN

NADIYA HUSSAIN’S CHICKEN STEW WITH GRAPEFRUIT

C

ITRUS works just as well with savoury dishes as it does with sweet. The old grapefruit doesn't get much air time though. I love its combination of sweet and bitter, which works really nicely with the chicken. This stew is such a simple thing to make, but the grapefruit adds some razzle-dazzle." Ingredients: (Serves 6) 1kg skinless boneless chicken thighs, diced 1tsp ground turmeric 4tbsp olive oil, plus a little extra 3 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 small onion, finely diced 1tsp salt 2tsp ground cumin 1tsp chilli flakes 1 large grapefruit, juice (about 150ml) and zest 500ml hot water 2tbsp cornflour mixed with 2tbsp water A large handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped For the couscous: 400g couscous 1tsp salt 2tbsp unsalted butter (30g) 550ml boiling water Method: 1. Put the chicken into a bowl, add half a teaspoon of turmeric and mix until all the chicken is covered. Place a large saucepan on the hob on a medium to high heat and add the oil. Fry the chicken in batches, until cooked and brown around the edges. Put back into the bowl and set aside. 2. Add a little extra oil, about a tablespoon, to the pan. Add the garlic, onion and salt and cook until the onion is soft - this can take 10-15 minutes. 3. Now add the cumin, chilli flakes and the remaining half a teaspoon of turmeric and cook for a few minutes. 4. Add the grapefruit juice and zest, along with the browned chicken. Mix through, then add the hot water. 5. Stir in the cornflour/water mixture, then cover the pan with a lid and cook for 30 minutes. 6. Meanwhile, put the couscous into a bowl and stir in the salt. Put the butter on top. Pour in the boiling water until it reaches about 1cm above the couscous. Cover, then set aside so that the couscous can soak up the water. 7. When the chicken stew is cooked, take it off the heat and add the parsley. Serve the stew with the couscous.

Essentials everyone should keep in their vehicle you keep a set of jump leads in your car so you can start your engine with help from another vehicle • Keep a spare pair of sturdy shoes

with a good grip in your car. You’ll need these to turn the wheel brace when changing a tyre, or to push your car if you’ve broken down, or even just to change shoes if there’s a sudden weather change • An item that’s often overlooked is the reflective warning triangle. This gives you extra security for a number of reasons such as breaking down in the dark. Put it out in accordance with the rule from the Highway code 274 which advises to “put

a warning triangle on the road at least 45 metres (147 feet) behind your broken down vehicle on the same side of the road, or use other permitted warning devices if you have them. Always take great care when placing or retrieving them, but never use them on motorways.” • A lot of us use our satnavs to travel to unfamiliar places, but what if your battery dies and you can’t find the charger? Or if it takes you the wrong way? The best thing to do is to refer back to your trusty road atlas, so don’t forget to purchase an upto-date copy every year and keep it in your car. A good rule of thumb is to take a look at your road map before you set off, to get an idea of the direction you need to travel in. Find yourself a place to aim for, or motorway signs to look out for • Last but not least your mobile phone. Switch it to silent and place it in the glove

box to avoid any temptation to touch it, but it will be there ready to use when and if you need it Richard says: “A journey can be a pleasant experience with the right planning. But it can turn into a nightmare if circumstances change and you do not have the right tools for the job with you. Getting stranded either in suddenly changing weather conditions, breakdowns or road closures will be made more bearable if you can let people know where you are, and survive in relative comfort and safety until you can get safely where you’re going.”

HETHER it’s summer or winter, there are some key items you’ll need in your vehicle all year around to help you stay safe on the road. Richard Gladman, IAM RoadSmart’s head of driving and riding standards, writes about the essentials that you should always keep in your vehicle. • It’s always best to keep an ice-scraper and can of de-icer in your vehicle as the British weather is so unpredictable, and can be sunny one day and frosty the next • Carry an empty fuel can with you. Don’t carry a full or partially full one as this is a fire hazard and if it has recently had fuel in it, flammable vapour may still be present • You never know when you’ll need a first aid kit, so keeping one in the boot of your car is always handy for either yourself, or another road user if you’re first on scene at an accident • If you’ve broken down on the side of the road, the last thing you want is to be cold and unable to see your way around the dark. That’s why we advise drivers to always keep a torch and set of batteries in their vehicle, along with warm clothes, a blanket and a high visibility jacket. And don’t forget food and drink to stop your energy levels from dropping - bottled water is a must • The battery on your car can go flat at any time, whether you’re popping to your local fish and chip shop or picking your vehicle up from the airport car park after a wonderful sunny holiday. Make sure

There’s no need to leave your best friend at home this summer

W

ITh the summer holidays here, it comes to mind that we can now travel easily with our beloved pets across to Europe and beyond write the experts at Abbey Vets. You may not be aware that gone are the days of a six month quarantine period and with a little preparation we can now travel to Europe accompanied by our dog (or cat) and return after a visit to a vet on the continent for a quick tapeworm treatment (24 hrs-120 hrs prior to returning to UK) Should you have such an inkling, here is a quick overview of what is required before you travel. Your dog will require a microchip (hopefully already sorted) and a vaccination against Rabies; an injection, given by our vet, which will protect your pet against this unpleasant disease. They will be issued with their own pet passport and after twenty one days, your pet is ready to travel however, we also need to consider

protection for diseases that we do not see in the UK, think mosquitoes and Malaria. Our four legged friends, on the continent can also be challenged by mosquitoes, ticks and SandFlies carrying some unpleasant diseases, which we very rarely see in our normal pet population. So, once you have decided where you are planning on visiting it is important to protect your pet against these possible challenges. These risks differ dependant on your travel route and final destination, a very useful website www.cvbd.org, helps to give an idea of where and what you may come across on your travels. Protection, however, can be easily achieved , using a spot on parasite treatment, coupled with a preventative collar. Abbey Veterinary Centres can prescribe suitable, effective protection for your proposed trip. Ideally, a little time spent prior to the trip could help prevent bringing your faithful friend home with something unexpected! That is it, no need to leave the pooch in kennels, they can come along and enjoy the trip with the family!
