Gazette and Diary Magazine

Dear readers,

H

"If the first of July be rainy weather, It will rain, more of less, for four weeks together." John Ray ( English Proverbs)

ERE we are already more than half way through the year, which only five mintues ago was new.

You can always tell when summer is in full swing because posts start appearing on Facebook warning everyone that there’s only 160 odd sleeps until Christmas which immediately sets me searching for the three years worth of Christmas cards I have bought and lost before they could be sent out. I have friends who use the long summer evenings to sit in the garden and write their Christmas greetings over a glass of something cold, but that seems a step too far for me...and I’d undoubtedly lose the finished cards before December anyway. Speaking of balmy summer evenings and with predictions suggesting that we could finally be enjoying the barbecue summer we’ve been promised for years this month’s edition of the Gazette and Diary includes our annual Fun in the Sun supplement - a pull out guide to the best of the summer’s events and how to make the most of the summer weather. From the best barbecue recipes to how to look your best and keep cool in the sun we’ve got it covered this month. If you’re looking for things to do with the whole family you won’t do better than pay a visit to the traditional Llanthony Show and our full page guide gives a sneak preview of what you can expect to find there. Look out also for Nigel Heath’s regular travel guide, which this month sees him out and about and finding out that there’s more than cake to be enjoyed in the holiday haven of Maderia. In all there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this month’s edition of the Gazette and Diary so why not take a break, grab your copy, a pile of Christmas cards and a cooling drink and make the most of the summer weather...don’t forget there’s only twenty-something Mondays until Christmas!

Tall, strong, incredibly handsome, hardworking, kind to animals and great with children - what’s not to love about trees?

T

HE hunt for 2018’s Tree of the year is on! The Woodland Trust is calling for the public’s nominations to find the nation’s favourite tree. The contest, now in its fifth year throws the spotlight on Wales’ best trees to help drive up interest in their value and protection. And it seems there’s still a way to go with policy makers. Jill Butler of the Woodland Trust said: “Easily overlooked and routinely undervalued, trees need their moment in the sun. At this point last year we called for changes to planning policy that would strengthen protection for ancient trees in England, and also in Wales. We’re still waiting to hear if this will be the case 1. Meanwhile, more trees have come down needlessly in our towns and cities and calls to save important trees from infrastructure plans such as HS2 have been rejected. “And so we’re asking the public to nominate their personal favourites and put a public value on these natural treasures. If a certain tree means something to you personally, or a tree in your life has witnessed part of our history or been a part of a community for generations, nominate it for the Tree of the Year crown before August 6.” As well as putting Wales’ best trees on the map, the awards - supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery - offer a £1,000 tree care award for each winning tree. The money can be used to arrange a ‘Tree-LC’ health check from a qualified arboriculturalist, provide interpretation or educational materials or simply just hold a celebratory event in honour of the tree. The winning tree in last year’s Wales Tree of the Year Competition was the Hollow Tree in Gnoll Country Park in Neath (pictured). Lorraine Surringer who nominated it says: “I’m delighted

about the “Tree-L-C” tree care award. It’s being used to implement the recommendations of the arboricultural report, to help keep it healthy and strong into the future, so future generations can enjoy it as we can today. The Hollow Tree is such a draw for the Gnoll Country Park. It’s a place where families can come and enjoy a cheap day out and enjoy nature. Everyone is thrilled that our tree has won.” Another of Wales’ finalist tree last year was the Giant Redwood of Llangattock, which stands on the banks of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. Kevin Phillips of the Canal and River Trust says: “The tree is a cherished landmark of the canal. Anyone who has travelled down it will have noticed it. We have used the award to buy a bench which will stand between the tree and the canal and there’ll be information about the tree and how old it is. It’s a great spot to enjoy a picnic in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park.” Any individual, group or organisation can nominate a tree and share its story at woodlandtrust.org.uk/treeoftheyear until 9 am on August 6. The entries will then be shortlisted by a panel of independent experts before facing the public vote. Sanjay Singh, Senior Programmes Manager at People's Postcode Lottery said: “I am delighted that players of People’s Postcode Lottery can back this great celebration of the nation’s trees. We look forward to finding out about all the grand specimens, the trees with a story or the trees that communities hold dear.” The overall winner will go forward to the European contest run by the Environmental Partnership Association. The competition helps us celebrate what we have and join the chorus in Europe to demand better recognition for the important role of trees.

The secret to a perfectly barbecued sirloin steak

T

Gay and Hunt Ltd, Blaenant Industrial Estate, Brynmawr NP23 4AZ Telephone: 01495 312935 www.gayandhunt.co.uk

HE sun is shining barbecue season is officially here - and what how better to enjoy the weather than with a delicious steak cooked to perfected over an open grill. Expert Paul Yates, who travels the country cooking tasty dishes on his Monolith Ceramic Grill offers his advice on how to pull off the perfect steak. Grilled beef sirloin steak Juicy, tender steak is an absolute must. A simple recipe, the key is utilising the barbecue for its grilling to help delivery the perfect end product. Extremely simple, there are two steps to cooking the steak, first searing the outside of the meat before a more indirect cooking approach which will allow you to cook the steak the way you like. The size of steak does not matter, of course, the smaller the piece, the less time it will take to cook. For this recipe, I used a 3lb steak. Preparation time: Two minutes Cooking time: 55 minutes Resting time: 15 minutes Total time: 1 hour 15 minutes Ingredients Sirloin steak (3lb) – can be changed to personal preference Freshly ground salt and pepper Season the meat with the fresh ground salt and pepper and place on the grill to help seal the seasoning. Turn regularly until the piece of steak is brown all over. Part one complete, now it is a case of setting up the grill so it will cook the steak to your liking. Once the grill is set up for indirect cooking, place the meat on the grill and close the lid. The key is to roast gently for roughly 15 minutes per pound on a medium setting, this should take the temperature to around 160°C. If you are using a temperature probe then the temperature you’re looking for is 50°C. Now, a key part to serving a delicious steak, cooking may be complete but it’s vital the meat rests for 15 minutes allowing the juices to settle. After that, carve away into slices that are roughly 1cm thick. Add seasoning for further taste and serve with whatever sides that tickle your tastebuds!

In the mood for a picnic - then why not head to the top five places within a short drive

W

HAT can be better than good weather and good food coming together for a picnic, whether it is out with the family or as a cosy meal for two? To help celebrate the recent National Picnic Week, Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Tourism conducted a survey of visitors to the region to find their favourite picnic spots. With so many places to choose from, whether with stunning views, by the riverside or in a secluded glade, the Top Five answers have been quite revealing.

Mallard’s Pike Mallards Pike was voted the best place to picnic in the South West in the Warburtons Picnic Awards 2010. The site consists of man-made lakes and is a popular attraction for walking, cycling and other adventure activities. With seasonal hot and cold refreshments on site Mallards Pike is a great location for a family picnic too. Cannop Ponds Cannop Ponds (pictured) is a popular picnic site in the Forest of Dean. It has a large grass area to spread out your picnic blankets and is close to the car park and the ponds. The ponds themselves are picturesque and are home to lots of wildlife including ducks, swards and even dragonflies.

Beechenhurst Lodge Beechenhurst is the perfect rain or shine picnic location, with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy in the sunshine and indoor space just in case it rains. In the heart of the Forest, the centre is close to the Sculpture Trail and has a play area, cafe, shop and an exciting climbing tower. White Castle/Skenfrith Castle/St. Briavels Castle Want a magnificent backdrop to enjoy while having a picnic? Then these castles have proved popular with visitors to the Dean Wye. White Castle and Skenfrith Castle are both in Monmouthshire, St Briavels is in Gloucestershire.

The Kymin A two-storey circular Georgian banqueting house and naval temple, one mile east of Monmouth, in wooded hilltop grounds, which afford spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. When Admiral Lord Nelson visited the site in 1802 he described it as one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Your ULTIMATE guide to summer

Six ways to a slimmer you this summer W E all know slow and steady wins the healthy weight-loss race, but these insider secrets might help you on your way, says Liz Connor. Whether you've got a big event coming coming up, are desperate to fit back into an 'old trusty' item of clothing or you're simply concerned about your health, one of the biggest questions diet and fitness experts get asked is: 'How can I lose weight quickly?' Making sensible and healthy lifestyle changes over a long period of time is, of course, the best way to lose weight and keep it off in the longterm, but what if you're deadline isn't so relaxed? Losing weight safely, in a short period of time, can be tricky business. After all, being healthy is about far more than simply slashing calories - there's no point dropping weight quickly if your diet is seriously lacking in nutrients, or you're drastically overdoing it in the gym. But is there a middle-ground? We asked some leading nutritionists, personal trainers and health experts to hit us up with their number one tip for losing weight quickly and effectively...

1. Say 'laters' to the lattes and operate some 'portion caution' "Switching to an Americano or herbal tea instead of your usual latte or cappuccino can save a lot of calories on a daily basis, especially if you have sugar or syrups in them. A Starbucks Tall Vanilla Latte has 240 calories, compared to just 15 calories in their Americano," says Danny Noble, a personal trainer at Xercise4Less (xercise4less.co.uk). "Keep an eye on your portions too. Most of us simply guesstimate how much we are eating and too often we get it wrong. Get this under control using the following 'hand' method; two handfuls for vegetables, one clenched fist for carbs, a palm for your protein and a thumb for your healthy fats." 2. Prioritise proteins and fats "At the root of weight loss is 'calories in and calories out', but what makes the difference is how you get those calories. Try making each meal based around protein, like meat, fish, pulses, tofu, Quorn, and healthy fats like oils, avocado, nuts and seeds - then pile up on veggies," says Rob Hobson, head of nutrition at Healthspan (healthspan.co.uk). "Protein and fats keep you feeling full as they take a while to be digested, and veggies help to bulk out the diet and provide key micronutrients. As far as the carbs are concerned; to lose weight, your best bet is to keep them limited to just two of your daily meals. Keep the portion size to just a handful and make sure they're wholegrain (think oats, brown rice, buckwheat, brown pasta)."

5. Make sure you're not burning muscle "One of the most frustrating things I see on a daily basis is people killing themselves on the treadmill, watching the calories rack up, sweating like crazy and gasping for air like a fish out of water, thinking their undeniably hard efforts are going to promote fat-loss. Weight loss certainly, but weight is made up of a number of factors and once they've exhausted their available carbohydrate reserves, which ironically won't be much as they're probably on a low carbohydrate diet, they will need an alternative fuel source - that's when they'll burn muscle," says Callum Melly, personal trainer from Third Space (thirdspace.london). "This is why it's important to count your macros - that caloric content of your food - to ensure you're consuming enough protein to maintain your lean mass, and enough carbohydrates to fuel and replenish energy levels." 6. Sleep your way to a trimmer you "Interrupted or impaired sleep can cause a pre-diabetic state, making you feel hungry even if you've already eaten, which can wreak havoc on your weight. What we eat and don't eat plays a very important role on sleep. For example, eating a high-protein snack several hours before bed as this can provide the L-tryptophan needed for your melatonin and serotonin production," says Pippa Campbell, nutrition & weight loss coach (pippacampbellhealth.com). Finally, avoid before-bed snacks, particularly starchy carbs and sugars as these will raise your blood sugar and delay sleep. If your blood sugar drops too low in the night, you may also wake up and be unable to fall back asleep."

4. Try body brushing "Body brushing in the shower every day is a good way to reduce fat deposits, tighten skin and tone muscles in the short-term. Brush towards the heart to help improve blood flow and reduce cellulite," says Nicola Addison, wellbeing advisor and personal trainer at Eqvvs Training (eqvvs.com).

B

3. Utilise kelp "If adjusting your diet and exercising more hasn't helped you to lose weight, you may have hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland. A GP can access this for you and if necessary, you can help normalise an underactive thyroid gland by increasing your intake of the mineral iodine. This is where kelp can help," says medical nutritionist, Dr Sarah Brewer. "As well as providing iodine, kelp contains alginates that help you feel full and which block fat absorption. Try Healthspan Kelp Extract (£12.99 for 360 tablets, Healthspan.co.uk)."

Have fun in the sun but don’t forget the Countryside Code

W

E all enjoy a day in the beautiful Welsh countryside but it always helps to follow the Countryside Code to keep yourself safe and the countryside in peak condition for everyone to spend time in. According to Natural Resources Wales, the three key elements of the Countryside Code are:

Respect - Protect - Enjoy. Respect other people

• Please respect the local community and other people using the outdoors. Remember your actions can affect people’s lives and livelihoods. •Consider the local community and other people enjoying the outdoors •Leave gates and property as you find them and follow paths unless wider access is available

Protect the environment

• We all have a responsibility to protect the countryside now and for future generations, so make sure you don’t harm animals, birds, plants or trees and try to leave no trace of your visit. When out with your dog make sure it is not a danger or nuisance to farm animals, horses, wildlife or other people. •Leave no trace of your visit and take your litter home •Keep dogs under effective control Fires can be as devastating to

wildlife and habitats as they are to people and property – so be careful with naked flames and cigarettes at any time of the year. Sometimes, controlled fires are used to manage vegetation, particularly on heaths and moors between October 1 and March 31, but if a fire appears to be unattended then report it by calling 999.

Enjoy the countryside and stay safe

• Even when going out locally, it’s best to get the latest information about where and when you can go. For example, your rights to go onto some areas of open access land and coastal land may be restricted in particular places at particular times. Find out as much as you can about where you are going, plan ahead and follow advice and local signs. •You’re responsible for your own safety and for others in your care – especially children - so be prepared for natural hazards, changes in weather and other events. Wild animals, farm animals and horses can behave unpredictably if you get too close, especially if they’re with their young - so give them plenty of space. • You’ll get more from your visit if you refer to upto-date maps or guidebooks and websites before you go. Contact local information centres or libraries for a list of outdoor recreation groups offering advice on specialist activities.

Why you should always slather on the aftersun even if you aren’t burnt

Gazette and Diary Magazine

S

UN protection expert Abi Cleeve tells Katie Wright why slathering on a post-bathing lotion shouldn't be an afterthought.

Most people learn about the importance of sun cream the hard way, when a delightful day on the beach ends not with a gorgeous tan, but with frazzled, fiery red skin that radiates heat and causes searing pain whenever you accidentally brush it against your bed sheets. Ouch. In those cases, slathering yourself in aloe vera and heading for the shade is the obvious thing to do, but did you know that even if you haven't reached lobster levels of sunburn, you should still be applying aftersun? "Whether an obvious burn or not, the skin goes through defence processes when under attack from UV radiation. It should be a daily 'go to' after any sun exposure," says Abi Cleeve, MD of Ultrasun UK. Why is aftersun so important? "A truly hydrated skin is key to healthy skin. When cells are hydrated and oxygenised, they cope much better with oxidative stress, such as UV, pollution and infrared-A," Cleeve explains. "An overexposure to UV works in a

PA Photo/thinkstockphotos

similar way to an overdose of thermal radiation (heat). When your skin burns UV or thermal burn - the damage spreads through the skin cells after the exposure has ceased. "Most people only feel 'burnt' after a few hours out of the sun, and we know with a thermal burn - such as from the iron or the oven - the damage continues

to spread after the source of the burn has stopped. Getting key cooling ingredients on to the skin really helps." What does aftersun do? Cleeve recommends Ultrasun's new Aftersun Tan Booster, which contains an ingredient called superoxide dismutase that gives the skin all-important antioxidants, plus cooling menthols.

"Of course, hydration in a way the skin can utilise is vital. So many products may hydrate in the short term, but product is quickly processed through the skin's system, leaving no longerterm support," she says. "With this true level of support, the skin is less likely to go into trauma, meaning it doesn't dry and peel as easily, and you'll prolong your tan with a gorgeous, hydrated glow." How much aftersun should you apply? "Lots!" Cleeve advises. "I mean that, actually - an immediate application is important, but don't be afraid to add more to keep the skin saturated with hydration." And that, in turn, will help your tan last longer - a fortunate side effect of soothing your skin. "I will always say sun protection is THE most important thing, but aftersun comes a close second!" Cleeve adds. "I was even applying it to my kids when they were toddlers, who didn't care about prolonging their tan. I had kept them super safe in the sun, but I knew what the skin needed after sun exposure. Aftersun should be part of your sunny day routine, at home and abroad."

Spectators will also be invited to join in with sporting events including the ever popular four in a large sack, children’s and dog’s races Local professionals will be giving shearing demonstrations throughout the day, and there are opportunities for everyone to get involved in the floral, culinary, agricultural and craft competitions taking place in the show marquee. Four key questions to consider when choosing your wedding jewellery

T

HE Duchess of Sussex's simple wedding gown may have divided opinion but there's one thing we can all agree on - her jewellery was too die for.The 36year-old selected a stunning diamond bracelet and stud earrings, both by Cartier, while her veil was held in place by a diamond tiara that dates back to 1932 and was lent by the Queen. No big deal. Sadly, most families don't have a vault full of heirloom headgear to plunder, but when it comes to jewellery every bride wants to look as marvellous as Meghan. So, if you haven't already got an idea of the accessories you want to wear, where do you start? "When selecting your wedding day jewellery, it's important to choose pieces that reflect your personality and that you would feel comfortable and confident wearing," says Lorna Haddon, head of jewellery and diamond rings at Beaverbrooks the Jewellers. "Obviously, you also want your jewellery to complement your dress, so we'd recommend selecting your jewellery after you've decided on the gown." It's important to do lots of research, she advises: "Don't be afraid to try on different pieces to see how they look, and make sure you visit your jeweller as well as looking online to get an idea of exactly what you want." So you've found the gown and you're on the hunt for bling. Here, Haddon shares four key questions that every bride-to-be should ask herself when deciding on jewellery for her big day... 1. What kind of neckline does your wedding dress have? "If you're wearing a strapless or A-line dress, you might opt for a pendant, or a plunging necklace to draw attention to the neckline and create a classic, eye-catching look. An elegant pearl necklace would create a more traditional and understated finish. "If you're going for a high neck or halter neck dress, you may choose to accessorise with a sparkling bracelet and a pair of elegant stud earrings." 2. What will suit your skin and hair colour? "Matching jewellery to suit your skin tone and hair colour is key for creating the perfect look for your big day. Paler skin tones suit white metals, such as silver and platinum, which are paired perfectly with brilliant diamonds to add a touch of glitter and sparkle." "Brides with darker skin and hair tones may prefer to opt for a warmer metal such as yellow or rose gold, or even experiment with coloured gemstones such as emerald, or 'something blue' with sapphire or topaz for a bold and glamorous finish."

PA Photo/Handout

3. How are you going to style your hair on the day? "Decide how you're styling your hair and if you're wearing a veil as this will help inform your jewellery decisions. An elegant pair of drop earrings would be perfect if you're wearing your hair up, as they create an elegant statement whilst drawing attention to your eyes. "A classic stud earring can also provide a touch of sparkle and can be teamed with a matching pendant." 4. Will you want to wear the jewellery in future? "Wedding jewellery shouldn't just be limited to your wedding day; if you invest in quality pieces, they will last a lifetime and can be treasured forever. "This is one advantage of keeping wedding jewellery simple - you can wear it again and each time you wear it, the memories will come flooding back and it will remind you of your special day." 1685574

BERGAVENNY woman Katherine Skellon is encouraging brides and grooms to dust off their wedding clothes and don them once more for a charity ball later this year. The Wedding Dress Charity Ball, in aid of St David’s Hospice Care, will be taking place in September and is set to be staged in the Caernarfon Suite Ballroom at the five star Celtic Manor Resort, Newport. Event organiser, Katherine said: “My husband, Lyndon, and I came up with the idea for the ball after several guests at our recent wedding, and my sister’s, said they would love to re-live their special day and wear their wedding dresses just one more time.” Katherine, aged 41, had been planning the event with her mother, Krystyna, before her untimely death earlier this year She said: “I sadly lost my mum to cancer on January 31 this year, aged just 67. She was supported by St David’s Hospice Care from her diagnosis to her final days. “The hospice at home service made it possible for my mum to be at home and that is my main inspiration for fundraising. They provided care, kindness and compassion to my mum and our family that I will never forget.” The theme for the event is a big wedding celebration party Katherine said: “On the night, there will be a red carpet, drink on arrival, a threecourse dinner, live auction and raffle, a live band and DJ. We hope to see brides who would love to wear their dress again and bring their families and friends from their big day. Anyone who has been a bridesmaid, mother of the groom/bride, ushers, grooms and lots of wedding guests. “There has been a real wedding buzz this year, especially with the Royal Wedding at the weekend. It would be lovely if the ball falls on the anniversary of a couple and make the night an extra special celebration. “I am hoping to wear my wedding dress if I can still fit into it.” Katherine, a freelance journalist, said, “We would obviously love to raise as much as we possibly can but if we can raise enough to enable other patients to benefit from this service for even a week, as well as raising awareness of the service they provide, then we will have made a difference.” Skye Lewis, of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “This is a wonderful new idea for an event and it will give people a great opportunity to wear their treasured wedding outfits once again.” The event will be taking place on Saturday, September 22 at The Celtic Manor Resort, Caernarfon Suite Ballroom. Entries are £50 per person. For more information on the event, please visit www.WDBall.com

Family and friends of Reuben Morgan tell people to stop swimming in reservoirs F

AMily and friends of a teenager who drowned in a welsh reservoir are warning people not to swim in reservoirs. The call came during The Royal life Saving Society UK’s Drowning Prevention Week, which aims to increase awareness of water safety and cut the 400 accidental drownings that occur every year in the UK. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is supporting the campaign by launching its One last Breath video campaign which starkly depicts two teenagers who drown after going into the water at a reservoir on a hot summer day – and the terrible impact on their friends and family left behind. Maxine Johnson and his friends, lauren Mitchell, Kyle Thomas and Mathew Scofield of Reuben Morgan, a 15-year-old boy who tragically died after going missing when swimming at Pontsticill Reservoir, near Merthyr Tydfil have backed Welsh Water’s hard-hitting “One last Breath” campaign which urges people not to enter reservoirs, even on hot summer days. lauren Jennings, 22 from Merthyr Tydfil, lost one of her best friends while swimming in a reservoir in 2006. She said she didn’t realise how important the messages were until it was too late. “There were signs everywhere but we ignored them. As a 15 year old, you just think you are invincible and

that it wouldn’t happen to me or any of us. “it could have been any one of us, or more than one of us. i want to do all i can to make sure people realise that no matter how beautiful the reservoirs look, the reality is they are very dangerous.”

Welsh Water, which serves most of Wales and Herefordshire, is issuing the warning about the extreme danger of swimming in reservoirs because of freezing temperatures, deadly undercurrents and hidden machinery that can drag the strongest swimmers under.

Welsh Water’s Chief Operating Officer, Peter Perry, said, “Our reservoirs are great places to enjoy organised activities but all too often people are tempted to risk taking a swim which can lead to tragic consequences. “While reservoirs might seem like a great place to cool off, they are full of hidden dangers with freezing cold water and strong currents. “We ask customers to remember that reservoirs are working sites that are an important part of the water cycle. This is why we display signage at these sites and undertake campaigns asking customers not to swim at any time.” RlSS UK’s Chief Operating Officer, Di Steer said, “We need everyone’s help to raise awareness about the re-

ality of accidental drowning, and we’re delighted that Dŵr Cymru is supporting the campaign. “We urge as many people as possible to watch this video and just spend a bit of time making sure they know how to stay safe near water. “Most of us are generally aware of the hazards at the beach but tend to overlook dangers closer to home like water temperature, sudden changes in depth or hidden debris. A few simple steps are all it takes to prevent a tragedy.”

Travel writer Nigel Heath visits Maderia and meets one of its most familiar residents...

H

E IS a sub tropical island hotel's longest standing guest who arrived almost sixty years ago, liked what he saw and is still in residence.Fellow guests with an artistic flare have even drawn pictures of him in the visitors' book. He is Colombo, a giant tortoise who wanders around the lush grounds of a former 18th century manor house on this enchanting Atlantic island. Many other visitors, first arriving on cruise ships, have been so captivated that they've flown back time and again from the UK to enjoy a temperate year round climate, exotic flora and stunning coastal and mountainous scenery. This island is, of course, Madeira and Colombo's home and formerly that of England's Napoleonic Wars General William Beresford, is the small and exclusive Quinta Jardins Do Lago Hotel overlooking the capital Funchal. We arrived here on a Monday in time for lunch by the pool and spent the rest of the day chilling out and wandering around the exotic grounds which have over six hundred species of plants. We'd only just set out to walk to the harbour the following morning when we met a crocodile of children on their way up to the hotel's vegetable garden to learn about herbs. Continuing our descent, latterly through quaint and narrow streets, we reached Funchal's wide and bustling promenade where we basked in the holiday atmosphere along with crowds of visitors just landed from the three gleaming white cruise ships towering over the harbour My wife Jenny was tempted into a small boutique displaying attractive ceramics at very reasonable prices which I said had probably been made in China! My verbal indiscretion was seized upon immediately by Claudia, the young and enthusiastic owner who assured us that all her wares were made in Portugal! Since the country joined the EU in 1980, volcanic and mountainous Madeira has benefitted substantially from massive investment in new roads and, more importantly, tunnels which have greatly improved accessibility for islanders and tourists alike. We spent that afternoon on a Funchal 'must do' experience, namely a guided tour of Blandy's centuries old lodge where the world famous Madeira wine is produced. Back in those far off days when barrels of Madeira were exported to British India it was discovered that the wine improved on its voyage through the tropics so exposure to heat is now part of the maturing process, we learned. Steeply sloping vine covered terraces together with thousands of banana plants, whose fruit is exported to mainland Portugal, were much in evidence as we left Funchal on a small group bus tour the following morning. Climbing ever higher through wooded areas of pine and eucalyptus, we eventually

crossed to the far steeper northern side of the thirteen mile wide island at a height of some 3,000 feet before descending though shady forests of laurel to reach the small coastal town of San Vincente. From here it was a short and quite dramatic coastal drive via tunnels bored through towering coastal cliffs to reach Porto Monz, the most north westerly point of the thirty five mile long island. Here we dined on fish overlooking the ocean before continuing our tour, winding up and over Madeira whose highest mountain Pico Ruivo towers to more than 6,000 feet. Instead of returning to the Quinta Jardins Du Lago. we had our luggage onboard the bus and were dropped off at the five star Cliff Bay Hotel which enjoys a stunning multi tiered position right over the ocean and the harbour. After breakfast we enjoyed spectacular views over the city and the ocean as we ascended by cable car to visit Madeira's famous botanical and Monte Palace Gardens followed by a not to be missed thrilling wicker toboggan ride. These now famous toboggans were introduced by a British merchant in the early 19th century as a means of moving freight down the frighteningly steep hill to the old town and then someone came up with the bright idea of putting a seat on them. Yet another treat was in store when we next took a taxi to the tranquil and less visited English country estate style Palheiro Gardens high above the city and lunched on homemade quiche in its little ' Tea House.' No visit to Madeira would be complete without taking a walk along one of its famous Levada water channels introduced in the 18th century as a means of irrigating the hundreds of man made vegetable and fruit growing terraces clinging to the mountainous terrain. There are dozens of them at varying heights all around Madeira of which twenty eight are officially designated walking routes so giving visitors a wonderful opportunity to explore the countryside. A visit to Funchal's Friday market was rewarded by a mouthwatering display of locally caught fish and a vast array of exotic fruits all grown on Madeira. There were fifteen different varieties of passion fruit alone just another reason why so many return visitors are passionate about Madeira. Fact File Nigel Heath was a guest of Classic Collection Holidays (0800 047 1964) who have been tailor-making luxury hotel holidays for more than 30 years and will book flights, hotels and private transfers. He was hosted at the Quinta Jardin Du Lago and the Cliff Bay hotels. Miles Morgan is the local agent.

Everyone for tennis at Gibraltar Nursing Home

Gazette and Diary Magazine

W

ATCHED by 300 million viewers in 200 countries, and with 500,000 spectators in attendance over the 2-week period, Wimbledon is the largest annual sporting event in Europe, with the cheapest seats for the finals currently costing around £4,000, if you can get them! It is much loved by audiences in the UK’s Care Homes, too, with packed seats watching the matches in the build up to the Women’s final on July 14 and the men’s final on July 15. At Gibraltar Nursing Home, in Monmouth, the residents, are referred to as Family Members, and have matches viewable in numerous lounges and may be served traditional strawberries and cream and perhaps even a glass of something stronger than tea, to celebrate the finalists’ successes. The home has a speciality in caring for those living with dementia, and watching sport is thought to have a beneficial effect on that condition. But what is it about this fascinating game that attracts so many viewers? Perhaps it’s our pride in our own tennis stars, or the fact that it is the most famous tennis tournament in the world. Or is it the out-and out “Britishness” of it all with the strict, all-white uniforms, Henman Hill, and of course, the Royal Box? When asked why they liked watching tennis, family members often cited the classic 1980 final between Borg and MacEnroe as an ultimate Wimbledon Final. MacEnroe saved seven match points before finally losing to Borg in the fifth set. This year, the only break in excitement levels at the Home is going to be when the call, “New balls please” is heard

N annual Census conducted by the leading provider of cars and insurance for young drivers has revealed there is a lack of participation from parents of learner drivers when it comes to enhancing their child’s learning experience. Research by Marmalade has identified that over half (57 per cent) of parent respondents choose not to take their learner driver child out for private practice in addition to lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). This goes against the Driving and Vehicles Standards Agency (DVSA)’s recommendation of getting as much driving practice with friends and family as possible. Crispin Moger, CEO for Marmalade, comments: “I respect not all parents are able to offer their children additional private practice but I do believe more can be done to enhance the experience of novice drivers’ skillsets ahead of becoming qualified. And I’m not alone. “In our latest Census, night-time

driving (58 per cent), motorway driving (57 per cent), which has since been implemented into lessons from 4 June, and rush hour driving (48 per cent) were three of the biggest reallife scenarios which young drivers believe should be included within

driving lessons. These are everyday occurrences for most road users so it’s important learner drivers are armed with as much experience as possible before they are behind the wheel as a qualified driver.” Reasons for parents choosing not to take their child out on the roads varied. The most popular reason was that there was no need because this

was what the ADI was being paid for (30 per cent). This was followed by the parents not wanting their young driver to pick up their bad habits (21 per cent) and the child not wanting to practise with their parent (19 per cent). It is inevitable taking to the roads with an inexperienced driver will reveal a mixture of emotions. In fact, the survey highlighted 57 per cent of those parents who choose to take their learner driver child out on the roads (43 per cent) said the experience made them feel anxious, whilst 39 per cent felt a sense of pride. Crispin continues: “Sadly, young drivers (under 25’s) are statistically more likely to be killed or seriously injured compared to older drivers and one of the main reasons for that is lack of experience. Private practice is essential in ensuring different road types, weather conditions, time of day

and local areas are explored to present real-life scenarios and boost confidence. I urge parents who are willing and able to do so, to get behind that wheel and start practising with their child.” Parents considering offering private practice, or seeking more information, should visit Marmalade’s parent’s advice guide. The resource has an abundance of helpful tips including this recent insight from a driving instructor who shares his advice when giving your child additional lessons. M

eet Whizz - a very sad Whizz came to visit us after returning home with a dislocated right elbow. After his initial consultation at our main operating facility in Abergavenny, he was given a general anaesthetic before one of our orthopaedic vets replaced the dislocation and stabilised Whizz's elbow using a special splint. Once recovered from his procedure and with his pain controlled, his care was returned to his usual branch in Monmouth, where he became a star patient during his weekly check ups and bandage changes. Although it couldn't have been an easy time for him, he loved all the attention and tummy rubs from our staff. After four weeks the elbow was stable enough to remove the splint and following two further weeks of cage rest, helped by plenty of cuddles from his owners, he returned for a final check up and discharge from our out-

Denise has now reached such a level of expertise that she is the first port of call for many with ‘problem’ pets who may be nervous or aggressive. ‘I started from home so that I could provide a more relaxed and secure environment for dogs who may need that extra level of attention before buying a salon and staffing it to cater for more clients,’ she stated. ‘A lot of people with longer-coated breeds sometimes acquire them without realising the level of maintenance needed,’ said Denise - whose own pair of bearded collies take up a few hours of every day to keep in trim. Denise’s thriving business, Pawfessional Touch, now has a home based dog grooming studio providing a one to one grooming service for the more difficult dogs, plus a new grooming salon in Brynmawr, both offer a warm, friendly & caring environment providing excellent grooming services for all canine breeds. She stated, ‘The salon’s aim is always to put the welfare and comfort of the pets first and foremost. We don't use cages and always recognise individual needs of each animal.’ Denise only accepts a limited number of dogs per day at the home based studio to ensure each dog receives an exclusive one to one service. The new Grooming Salon which is fitted with the latest equipment, all the staff are qualified & have a real passion for dogs & grooming which can be seen in the quality of their work. And there's even a comfy sofa for the dogs to sit on while they wait for their owners to pick them up after their pamper session. All grooming is carried out to breed standards or owners request & professional products are used throughout. Denise is a fully qualified professional dog groomer to Advanced Professional Dog Grooming Diploma (Level 4), Pet log Implanter (microchipping) & Veterinary Assistant and Pawfession Touch is also a member of PIF (Pet Industry Federation) and ICMG UK and British Isles Grooming Association The salon also offers a cat grooming service without the need for anaesthetic - just tender loving care.
