The majority of people in Wales have never met a woman electrician, plumber or builder

N

EW research has found that careers in construction trades are not being considered by women despite a strong public desire to see more females in the sector. Shockingly more than three quarters of Wales (79 per cent) have never encountered a female in any of the main construction trades roles of plumber, electrician, carpenter or builder even though (81 per cent) of Wales would like to see more women in such roles. Yet, more than eight in ten (89 per cent) of women surveyed from the region have never even considered a career in the industry. The survey commissioned by Able Skills, specialists in construction training, found that only (21 per cent) of the people surveyed from Wales had encountered a female in these roles. Of those, (78 per cent) described the service received as positive and would recommend the service to others. None reported a negative experience. But why are there so few women considering a role within the construction trades industry? Women reported that the career was never highlighted as an option for them to pursue. More than three quarters (77 per cent) of women said no family, friends, careers advisors or teachers had ever discussed a career in the construction trades industry with them. The biggest factors holding women from Wales back from pursuing a career in a role traditionally associated with the opposite sex were concerns about: finding it intimidating (31 per cent) not being taken seriously (31 per cent) and facing prejudice in the job role (27 per cent). However the shortage of women in construction trades could be a trend on the way out, as overall British women aged 25-34 were the most likely to consider a career in the construction trades (35 per cent). Gary Measures, Managing Director of Able Skills says: “The public want to see more women in the construction trades industry and trust them to deliver a good job. Proving that women’s concerns about not being taken seriously and facing prejudice are unfounded. We really want to encourage more females to consider a career in construction trades and are really pleased to see that the younger generations may break down some of the barriers. In 2017 only five per cent of Able Skills trainees were female but we really want this to change.” Despite construction trades roles being perceived as male orientated, there is a high level of trust towards women working in the sector. Almost a third (31 per cent) of UK adults said they would trust a female construction trades person more to give them the best and most fair price, compared to just 14 per cent who would trust a male more. Able Skills offer construction training courses in electrical, plumbing, gas, plastering, carpentry, tiling, decorating and bricklaying. HERE is something magical about leaving a town at dawn when most are still asleep and when many un trodden miles lie ahead. And so it was when my walking friend Peter Gibbs and I left Abingdon, one of the oldest inhabited towns in England, at 5am on a glorious midsummer morning. We were on the final stage of our 184 mile trek along the River Thames from London's famous barrier to its slender source in rural Gloucestershire and tucked away in our rucksacks was breakfast to be had in some peaceful spot. "I wonder what adventures we shall have today," I always ask and on this final journey we were to be richly rewarded by meeting the UK's only blacksmith afloat, a giant rabbit in human form and a famous jazz guitarist. Beyond Abingdon is one of the more remote stretches of the now meandering Thames and we were soon passing through riverside grounds landscaped by Capability Brown as part of the nearby Newnham Palladian villa. Author Lewis Carroll organised river trips from Oxford to picnic here and stroll in the woods when the party included the original Alice. And talking of picnics, our thoughts turned to breakfast as we strolled through winnowing meadow grasslands where almost every step threw up a shower of tiny butterflies. We found a spot for our trusty plastic sheet and out came bottles of freshly squeezed orange juice, croissant, bananas and coffee. It was only nine and half miles to Oxford so this was a leisurely day to prepare us for the twenty mile trek from city of dreaming spires towards Lechlade on the southern edge of The Cotswolds. The Thames passes though the edge of

Oxford and here outside a riverside pub, aptly named The Punter, we chanced upon Blacksmith Brian Greaves, proud proprietor of the only floating smithy in the country. Accompanied by his wife Jen, he has spent the past 25 years plying his trade on the UK's network of rivers and canals but makes mostly decorative ironwork these days. Brian was originally a blacksmith in Skipton, Yorkshire, but gave it up so that the couple could forge a new life on the waterways. After overnighting in a nearby hotel, we again left at 5am, crossed Osney Bridge, famed for having the lowest headroom on the river, and had the world to ourselves until we heard laughter. There in a large natural pool, sparkling gold in the early morning sunlight, three young people were enjoying a dip. "It's lovely and warm," they cried back in answer to Peter's shouted enquiry but we didn't think we'd stop to find out although, in hindsight, it might have been fun. Ahead lay a glorious day of walking through long stretches of water meadow and fingers of woodland reaching out to touch the river, all interspersed by locks, beautifully maintained and garlanded with flowers. While chicks and small warblers cheeped and chirped amid the rustling reeds, the whistling cries of both buzzards and kites was often heard in the ever changing skies. Because we'd made an early start, we covered the 13.5 miles to Newbridge in time for a pub lunch and what a treat it was to shed our heavy packs. Ironically the bridge built by French Benedictines around 1250 is one of the oldest on the Thames. 1665578

The rain eased as we trudged into picturesque Cricklade, the first, town on the Thames, and headed for our second Red Lion of the day and final; overnight stay. Clear blue skies greeted us as we set out on the final 13.5 miles to the Thames source but that became much longer when we missed t h e

cient grasslands in Britain, we came across Natural England Reserve Manager Aidan Fallan who was clearing some woodland assisted by volunteer Phil Brown from nearby Cricklade The meadow supported Britain’s largest population of the Snake’s Head Fritillary , a beautiful and nationally scarce flower, we learned. Now the way led through the Cotswold Water Park, a series of lakes created from disused gravel pits and on through sleepy Somerford Keynes and Kemble to arrive at the source of the mighty Thames, marked by a simple stone set in undulating farmland far from the madding crowd. "So now that's done where are we going to walk next?" Peter asked.

Fact File BESIDES having the relevant OS maps, we found Leigh Hatt's step by step guide book The Thames Path from Sea to Source to be invaluable. Our accommodation on this final section was at The Premier Inn, Abingdon, River Hotel, Oxford, the Riverside Inn, Letchlade and The Red Lion in Cricklade.

Ahead lay six miles to our stopping point at Tadpole bridge, marred only by the final couple where the path was badly over grown but all was well the following morning as we enjoyed another lovely day's walking on to our overnight pub stop in historic Lechlade. Here we awoke to rain filled skies and donned waterproofs in preparation for a soaking but what a memorably bright day it was to be. We'd not gone far when we spied a weird personage loitering by a hedge and went to investigate w h a t turned out to be the scarecrow like image of a tall thin lady with a bunny's head. There was something quite spooky about her we agreed as we continued on our way to eventually arrive dripping at The Red Lion in Castle Eaton, said to be the first inn on the Thames. We received the warmest of welcomes from landlady Melody Lyall as we divested ourselves of packs and waterproofs, before ordering lunch and getting into conversation with a fellow traveller who happened to be heading in the opposite direction. "So what do you do for a living?" Peter asked after we had been chatting for some while and discovering that he was on his first long distance walk. And what a surprise it was to discover that our chance acquaintance was John

In order to get your garden gleaming for the special event, cleaning specialist Jeyes, who aptly carry the Royal Warrant, has shared some top tips on hosting the finest royal knees up. Party prep - Whilst your garden may not be as sizeable as the grounds of Windsor Castle, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pay close attention to the space you do have. Ensuring all areas are cleaned before the big event will make guests feel at home. Make sure the lawn has been mowed, dust off the garden furniture and treat any paved areas for dirt, mould and algae. Jeyes 4 in 1 Patio Power removes stubborn stains in no time and kills 99.9% of germs. Floral fantasies – Flower arrangements for the Royal Wedding are rumoured to focus on flowers in season this May. So why not get busy planting a beautiful bouquet of your own this spring, choosing blooms like peonies, white garden roses and foxgloves. Your guests are bound to be impressed by how bright and full of life your garden will look. Food fit for a queen – As much as your food choices for guests are important, so is your cooking equipment! Whilst your menu might not match up to that of the couple’s wedding breakfast, if the weather holds out, why not host your first barbecue of the year? To make sure your barbecue is ready to go, try Jeyes Smart Brush Barbecue Cleaner for fast acting results. The concentrated gel formula effectively removes burnt on food and rapidly kills 99.9 percent of barbecue germs. Pretty palace – To get into the true spirit of the regal festivities; consider sprucing up your outdoor space with some themed decorations. British flag bunting, throne seat covers and red, white and blue table decorations are just a few ideas to get you started. Why not get the kids involved and create your very own royal invitations and paper crowns to hand out to guests before the party. Jenny Questier, cleaning expert from Jeyes, commented: “As suppliers to the Royal Household, we couldn’t be more excited to get involved in the Royal Wedding celebrations. Garden parties are great fun and our outdoor range of cleaning products will ensure your outdoor space is clean safe and virtually germ free. Britain is a nation of home improvers new survey reveals

Wales in 2017 when compared to the average over the last two years. The number of planning submissions reached 16,000 last year– 1.3 for every 100 private properties, ranking ninth. The most popular home improvement among homeowners in Great Britain are ‘extensions’, with 40 per cent of applications made in 2017 – and most prominent in the West Midlands. The second most popular application is for ‘outbuildings’, accounting for 15 per cent. Showerstoyou.co.uk also found that the number of planning applications for conservatories built is on the decline, whereas changing to living rooms have been on the up, over the last five years.

ITH our love for shows such as Grand Designs and DIY SOS, it's no surprise that Britain is a nation of home improvers. New research shows that nearly six in ten (UK homeowners are planning to carry out home improvements worth £50.89 billion over the next six months. Bathroom and shower experts Showerstoyou.co.uk sought to find out the areas where people are opting to turn their house into a home, instead of moving to a new house, utilising a newly published report from Barbour ABI. They discovered that in Great Britain last year, the number of home improvement plans requiring planning permission rose by three percent and that that in London there were 3.7 planning applications made for every 100 privately-owned homes last year – the most in Great Britain in 2017. Despite this, the number of applications for home improvement dropped below 100,000 for the first time in three years, to 99,100. However, the level remains above the 2014 figure and still represents over 20 per cent of all applications in Britain. There has been a 7 per cent rise in home improvement applications in

Stay Safe at festivals How to Stay Safe at a Festival this Summer

A

S THE summer approaches, many music lovers will be making their way to various festivals around the country. Having fun and getting the most out of your experience is key to a great festival and alongside this, it may also be helpful to think about how to keep yourself and your friends safe. Charityt Safeline, offer expert guidance on how to make the most of your festival experience and keep yourself safe at the same time.

www.veddw.com/

• Have a buddy system Not all festivals last one day: for festivals which allow guests to camp overnight you should you set up camp near a lamppost or landmark – something that you can easily find at night. If that isn’t an option create a meeting spot with your friends and make sure you have a buddy system to avoid getting lost on your own.

• Don’t shy away from visiting the medical tent Medical tents are located throughout festivals and offer free care, don’t be scared to visit the medical tent if you or a friend is feeling unwell they can offer some reassurance and any medication if it is needed. • Stay safe whilst drinking alcohol Everyone wants to have a good time at festivals. If you’re going to be drinking

alcohol, make sure you keep to a oneto-one ratio (a glass of water for between every alcoholic beverage) this will help keep you hydrated. Don’t share your drinks or accept drinks from people you don’t know or trust: better still, buy and pour your own drinks to reduce the risk of your drinks getting spiked. • Get your bearings When you first get to a festival, check out what’s where. Festivals can be confusing places, it is important you get to grips with your bearings and know where key areas are such as the toilets, first aid, camping areas and chill out zones. Most festivals provide a map, or you could walk around and explore. The vast majority of people go to festivals and have a great time and may become regulars at festivals for many years – going and having fun is your main priority! Thinking about how to max out the fun with keeping safe can mean you get the most out of your festival experience – whether you’re a first-time festival fan or a seasoned pro. If you do find yourself subject to any form of sexual harassment or assault, remember it is not your fault and you are not alone. Safeline operates a confidential helpline, text, chat and email service for you to talk through your experience and get support and guidance. In recent news, there have been reported stories detailing the rise in sexual abuse attacks at festivals. It might also be the case that some people affected don’t actively report sexual assault and harassment for fear of stigma amongst other possible reasons. There are ways in which you can help yourself and others stay safe and unharmed when attending a festival. With these festivals taking place during some of the hottest days of the year, as well as being on unfamiliar territory, we have put together some general tips to keep you safe this summer: • Stay hydrated Temperatures during festivals can soar, so staying hydrated is one of the most important tips to consider for general wellbeing. Most festivals now have free water refill stations that are located throughout the festival we recommend you take full advantage of this and take your own water bottle, which many festivals also allow. • Protect yourself from the sun Whilst putting on your best festival shorts might seem fun the day before, it is important that you wear the correct sun protection. Also, don’t forget extra layers of clothes for when it gets cooler at night!

Open day at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools

Celebrating the work of more than 50 artists and makers in a unique rural setting

HE unique Monmouth Model offers an educational journey that transforms pupils’ lives

Refined over 400 years in the heart of the Wye Valley, the Monmouth Model educates girls and boys aged three to 18 through a unique combination of single-sex and co-educational environments at the optimum stages of their academic and personal development. Parents seek the best all-round education for their children; they want to feel confident their sons and daughters are developing to the full their academic talent, self-confidence, and social awareness. Pupils thrive, enjoying a wide range of academic subjects and impressive sports, cultural and arts facilities. They grow into well rounded, refreshingly grounded but also unbounded young men and women. “Laying the foundations with our vibrant co-ed pre-prep and nursery, our pupils from the ages of seven to 16 then learn in a more focused single-sex setting,” said a spokesman for the school. “We believe that, at this stage, boys and girls are inspired and motivated in specific ways; at Monmouth the distracting pressures of adolescence are absent from their academic lives, while they retain the valuable benefits of joint social and co-curricular activities. “From September 2018, Monmouth Schools’ Sixth Form will bring students together for co-educational teaching at this final stage of their journey through our family of schools. “We warmly invite all prospective pupils to our Open Day to experience first-hand some of the subjects and extra-curricular activities on offer and to meet staff and pupils in a relaxed, informal way.” For more information on our Open Day on Saturday, May 12, please go to www.habsmonmouth.org, call 01600 710433 for Monmouth School for Boys, 01600 711104 for Monmouth School for Girls or 01600 713970 for Monmouth Schools Pre-Prep and Nursery.

Crickhowell Open Studios Weekend marks ten years

T

HE Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains has become the place to visit annually during the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend (26 – 28 May) when 28 studios, galleries and other shared exhibition spaces will welcome visitors during the Crickhowell Open Studio weekend. Now in its tenth year the weekend continues to be a true celebration of the wealth of creativity across the area. Open Studios organiser Suzette Pratten said, “Promoting the flourishing community of artists, craftspeople and designer-makers has been at the heart of the weekend since its inception ten years ago. With many places along the way to eat and drink or explore it is the ideal way to enjoy a day out in the beautiful landscape. Usk Valley Artists’ Co-operative member Kay Leverton added: “The Open Studios is such a great event and has been since year one. The buzz of all the folk coming and going through the town talking about ART, what's exciting, challenging, lovely, unmissable, crazy and where to head off to out of town with scenery as well as Art/Craft. How good is that? It fills the town with people on a mission - art explorers. As an artist a huge audience suddenly knows who you are, what you do and with excitement all round often buys it. I love it, it has transformed my career and given me reason to strive harder for better and more imaginative work.” Suzette added, “The Crickhowell Open Art exhibition in the oriel CRiC gallery has become one of the highlights of the Open Studios Weekend, drawing hundreds of entries from far and wide. It includes diverse art in a variety of media by established, emerging and amateur artists, resulting in an exciting and varied exhibition much enjoyed by the many visitors during the weekend.” Free printed guides are widely available in shops, galleries, libraries and tourist information centres across the area or from the Crickhowell Resource & Information Centre, Beaufort Street, Crickhowell, NP8 1BN T: 01873 813667 or can be requested from gallery@visitcrickhowell.co.uk • Liz Smith by Callie Anne Healy - winner of the Young Artist award in 2016. •Circus Girl by Matt Pearce, selected for the Crickhowell Open Art exhibition.

Ten of the best festivals for food this summer

B

OOK your tickets, slap on the sunblock and get ready to eat.If you love strolling around outside, listening to live music while chomping into artisan pizzas and scoffing huge burgers with sauce that drips down your arms, you'll certainly want to attend a few of these food festivals over the coming months...

1. Malton Food Lovers Festival, Yorkshire, May 26-27 (visitmalton.com/foodfestival-yorkshire) Yorkshire lad Tommy Banks, head chef at The Black Swan at Oldstead - voted world's best restaurant in the 2017 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Restaurants

Steelhouse Festival line-up

Awards - is headlining this year's Malton Food Festival. See him cook live, before eating your way round stalls piled high with Yorkshire produce. Have a dance at the festival bar too, dipping in and out of the late night street food on offer. 2. Kerb Presents Jam On Rye, Peckham Rye, London, May 28 (kerbfood.com/jamonrye/) KERB dominates the street-food scene in London, bringing together individual traders and launching eclectic markets across the capital - Jam On Rye is their first proper festival. South London's finest MCs and reggae artists will be supported by the foodie likes of Breddos Tacos (you'll get through piles of them), Club Mexicana (for vegan fare) and Only Jerkin' (order the triple-dunked ginger beer battered nuggets). 3. Vegan Summer Fest Brighton, The Level, June 2-3 (veggies.org.uk) Sometimes, being vegan, you can feel a little left out at festivals where burgers and outdoor grilling are high on the agenda. So, head to Brighton's vegan fest for more than 100 foodie stalls dedicated to the plant-based life. 4. Latitude, Henham Park, Suffolk, July 12-15 (latitudefestival.com) Latitude is scrapping fast food vans in favour of proper street food, with their Street Feast this year. Tuck into pregos (Portuguese steak sandwiches) from Growlers, Argentine meats from Up In My Grill and beef short ribs from Salt Shed. Be sure to grab a seat at a live recording of BBC Radio 4's The Kitchen Cabinet with restaurant critic and MasterChef judge, Jay Rayner, too. 5. Jimmy's Festival, Ipswich, July 21-22 (jimmysfestival.co.uk) Whether you're entering the festival's much-hyped sausage eating competition or not (go on, you know you want to), you can learn butchery with Jimmy Doherty's head butcher Jonny Farrell, and catch cookery demos from vegan YouTube aficionados BOSH! and grill expert, DJ BBQ. 6. Wilderness, Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, August 2-5 (wildernessfestival.com) It's all about banqueting in style at Wilderness Festival - especially as Yotam Ottolenghi will be in the kitchen. If you can't nab a much-coveted seat though, there's endless feasting opportunities, whether you're a carnivore (Berber & Q, Patty & Bun) or animal free (try a huge Homeslice pizza or Petersham Nurseries' seasonal vegetarian menus). 7. Pub In The Park, Marlow (May 17-20), Bath (June 8-10), Tunbridge Wells (July 6-8), Knutsford (September 7-9), (pubintheparkuk.com) Chef Tom Kerridge's festival celebrating British pubs and British grub is going on tour this year, popping up in four locations. As well as live sets from Will Young, Jamie Cullum and Mel C, you can check out 'gastro pub pop-up' versions of Kerridge's Michelin-starred restaurants, and see chefs James Martin, Atul Kochhar and Jason Atherton (among others) showcasing their trade. 8. The Big Feastival, The Cotswolds, August 24-26 (thebigfeastival.com) Roll up to Blur bassist Alex James' farm for Craig David and Basement Jaxx, as well as a serious rosta of chef talent. Raymond Blanc, Marco Pierre White, Mark Hix and Gizzi Erskine will all be sharing their knowledge; there's hands-on kitchen fun for the kids, and (of course) a cheese bar - James is obsessed with his cheese. 9. River Cottage Festival, Axminster, August 25-26 (rivercottage.net) Not yet got to grips with pickling? You'll want to catch the fermentation masterclass at this year's River Cottage Festival, if you can manage to drag yourself away from the fire pit, where goat meat pioneer James Whetlor and foodie John Gregory-Smith will be hosting cook outs. You're sure to spot Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall bumbling around the site, too. 10. Abergavenny Food Festival, Wales, September 15-16 (abergavennyfoodfestival.com) Whip your tastebuds into shape with Abergavenny's expert tasting sessions, take a foraging tour (then use what you've collected) and spot chefs including Anna Jones, and Stephen Harris from the Sportsman, performing demos.

T

HE eighth consecutive Steelhouse Festival, which will take place over the weekend of July 2018, is delighted to announce that Myles Kennedy and Co.will join this year's amazing line up. Myles Kennedy and Co. will be coheadlining the Saturday night with Glenn Hughes, with both acts performing full sets. Known as the frontman of the mighty Alter Bridge, and also serving as vocalist with Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators both on stage and on record with Slash, his full band Myles Kennedy and Co. set is going to be unmissable. He features on five Alter Bridge albums and two Slash records. Having performed with Alter Bridge, Slash and graced many of the world’s finest festival stages and arenas, Myles Kennedy is revered as one of the great voices of rock and as a true artist with nothing to prove. 2018 saw the release of his debut solo album, ‘Year Of The Tiger’, and will also see his debut at Steelhouse Festival. Myles Kennedy said, “I'm more than excited to make my way up that mountain road and see everyone at Steelhouse Festival. I'll get to see my good friends Glenn Hughes and Dan Reed. And don't worry, I'm bringing the sun!” Promoters Mikey Evans and Max Rhead said, “We are hugely excited to have Myles Kennedy and Co appear at Steelhouse Festival this year. He is one of the finest contemporary rock singers in the world. The songs he's recorded with both Alter Bridge and Slash are already modern rock classics and his solo work really shows what a truly exceptional musician and song-writer he is. Having him co-headline Saturday 28th July with a full band and show alongside Glenn Hughes with his own Classic Deep Purple set means the vocal power on offer at Steelhouse this year is simply beyond formidable... The album is ‘Year of the Tiger’, but at Steelhouse 2018 it's the ‘Year of the Singer’, no question..” Once again Steelhouse Festival have put together a killer line-up. With co-headliner Myles Kennedy joining Glenn Hughes and the likes of Black Star Riders, The Wildhearts, Dan Reed Network, Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons, The Quireboys, King King, Stone Broken and many more, 2018 is going to be a true spectacular!

Garden designer Piet Oudolf’s top five plants

F you like swathes of ornamental grasses, rubbing shoulders with perennials that look like they've been planted together all their lives, then Piet Oudolf is the expert garden designer to follow. He's among the leaders of the Naturalistic Planting movement, favouring ornamental grasses which provide movement and structure throughout the year, accented with vibrant perennials that bring colour and form. His drifts of grasses create a soft, misty background for other plants. Oudolf - who has designed gardens The acclaimed Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf is leading the across the world, from RHS Wisley in Naturalist Planting movement. Hannah Stephenson finds out how Surrey to Pensthorpe in Norfolk and to capture the look in your own home. 'Ground Zero' on Manhattan Island - is encouraging us all to go natural, with a new iconic Horticultural Heroes feature at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this summer. The Dutch designer is creating a whimsical walk-through feature, using bold drifts of herbaceous perennials and grasses synonymous with his painterly style of planting. He doesn't like plants to be supported if he can help it, but prefers them to grow into each other, propping each other up naturally. "To achieve a naturalistic style, the planting has to look more spontaneous than classical plantings," he says. "It has to look composed, but not wild, it must be integrated. "My style in the Hampton Court garden is where groups of perennials are placed in a more dominant field of grasses, and I hope the public will take inspiration from that. The grasses include Sporobolus heterolepis, Stipa barbata and within that we have 20 different varieties of perennials, which bring the colour." He advises gardeners to give their outdoor space all-year-round interest, which is why he so loves grasses, whose structure and movement continues to provide interest in the cooler months. "Think about winter-flowering shrubs, hellebores, snowdrops and crocuses. Winter interest can also be provided by the leftovers of plants, such as seedheads," he observes. "Most grasses we use are easy to control and not rampant. In general, there are as many aggressive perennials as there are grasses but you need to know what you are doing." His favourite grasses include Stipa barbata, which has an elegant flower and blends effectively with perennials as it moves with the wind. He also favours Echinacea pallida and Eryngium alpinum, better known as sea holly, and monardas. Most of the perennials he prefers are easy to grow. Here, RHS chief horticulturist, Guy Barter - who points out that using tall handsome plants in drifts requires space and abundant sun - has put together five of Oudolf's favourite plants and a guide to growing them... 1. Monarda 'Beauty of Cobham' This plant has tall, gorgeous pink summer flowers beloved by pollinators, and purplish leaves that tend to exceed 90cm in shady spots, so good supports are advisable in domestic gardens. It appreciates watering to fend off mildew and keep the plant flowering well. The monarda looks best in groups of three (or more, if at all possible). 2. Echinacea pallida If you're looking for late summer flowers, coneflowers are a wonderful addition to colour your borders. They are a magnet for pollinators, producing pink flowers around a dark 'cone' - as long as the soil is not too dry and they are well staked, as the 1.2m stems can be weak in gardens and tend to topple. They require full sun to thrive. 3. Lythrum salicaria 'Swirl' With spikes of pink flowers on 80cm stems, this very robust plant likes dampish soils and will put up with light shade. One for the wilder parts of the border that will flower freely if the spent spikes are cut out. 4. Salvia x sylvestris 'Dear Anja' Blue and purple flowers and scented foliage make this tall 90cm plant a good choice for sunny borders. It's drought-resistant but one for warm sheltered southern gardens, unless cuttings can be taken and kept indoors over winter. 5. Veronica longifolia 'Pink Eveline' Veronica longifolia 'Pink Eveline' produces magenta flower spikes borne over a long period from mid-summer, although you'll need to deadhead it regularly. This graceful plant will attract bees and other pollinators, and is also a favourite among flower arrangers. It grows to around 60cm tall.

D

o you have an elderly relative who is struggling with domestic chores and is increasingly relying on you for help? Are you finding it difficult to provide that help and support? Do you feel guilty and overwhelmed? Then let us share your load writes a spokesman for Diamond Home Support. Diamond Home Support have been trading in Abergavenny since 2014 and our Home Assist Service has already transformed the lives of many of our elderly clients and their relatives. This service provides vital support for the elderly and less able in a friendly, caring and professional manner. We are challenging the preconceptions of domestic care by providing a client-led rather than a company-led service. Our workers are thoroughly vetted and are chosen more for their personality, ethos and attitude than anything else. They are given plenty of time between appointments, so there is never the need for visits to be cut short in order for the worker to be on time for their next appointment. The same worker visits each week, month or fortnight, allowing the client and the worker to build trust and develop a relationship. Loss of independence is humiliating and frustrating, and we therefore aim to make the experience as friendly and personal as possible. All potential clients are visited in their own homes so that we can talk them through the service, explain exactly how things work and answer any questions which they may have. We encourage relatives to be present at this visit so that they can satisfy themselves that their family members are not pushed into signing up for our services if they are unsure as to whether or not it is right for them. We respect the fact that each individual, however old, frail or disabled, has the right to consider the pros and cons of our services before signing on the dotted line and, to this end, we are happy to visit more than once should that be necessary. We appreciate that people lead busy lives and often find it difficult (if not virtually impossible) to provide the amount of support which their elderly relatives require. This leads to stress and guilt, with relationships becoming fractured and sometimes damaged beyond repair. Don’t suffer in silence; pick up the phone and let us help.

Bikers urged to stay safe while filtering W or approaching you from the rear • Filtering takes a lot of concentration, so make sure you take short breaks if you’re travelling for a long period of time • Ride at a speed that allows you to react to the movement of other road users and always have an escape route planned in your head • Filtering can sometimes come as a surprise to the person driving behind you, so remain courteous by giving a polite wave of the hand to the driver behind • Think of the size

a solid white line to filter • Can you see the driver’s face through the window or wing mirrors? Does he look like he’s about to pull out? Always look for evidence that the driver has seen you and comprehends that you are passing them • When filtering to the right side, consider using the ‘stepping stone’ method. Whilst you don’t actually have to move into the spaces, consider which one would be suitable If you are filtering between lanes, you need to look out for other motorcycles which could possibly be changing lanes

you should move into it. For examples, HGVs will need more space and time to manoeuvre than a car would Richard says: “One of the biggest advantages of a motorcycle is the ability to make progress through traffic. Despite thoughts to the contrary, it is not illegal and the Highway Code references it in a number of areas. Staying safe must be your main priority and understanding where planned filtering becomes dangerous overtaking will help with this. The best motorcycling advice ever is just because it fits doesn’t mean you should put it there.”

ITH the summer just round the corner and traffic jams and congestion pretty much guaranteed, IAM RoadSmart’s head of driving and riding standards, Richard Gladman, lifts the lid on how to filter through traffic safely on a motorcycle. No matter if you’re a new rider who’s nervous about filtering, or an experienced motorcyclists, it’s always good to be reminded of the following key tips: • Only filter when the surrounding traffic is moving at less than 20mph, and then only exceed that speed yourself by 10 to 15mph maximum (if safe and legal to do so) • Scan for side turnings and entrances to both sides of the road, and try to keep a car door’s width away from the vehicle you are passing • Obey all ‘keep left’ bollards and also be aware that temporarily stationary vehicles at traffic lights, pedestrian crossings etc. are not classed as parked for the purposes of solid white lines, and therefore you cannot cross

PETS’ CORNER

A nasty time for poor Lark

L

Ark belongs to the parents of kate, one of Abbey Vet’s receptionisst, in Brecon. One morning they woke up to find the left side of her face was severely swollen and she seemed out of sorts. kate bought her in to see Meg the vet, to find out what was wrong. Although no obvious wounds were found around Lark’s face, and her teeth and tongue were fine Meg suspected she had an abscess (pus filled swelling) in her cheek. As she lived with other pet's this would likely have been caused by a bite or puncture wound introducing bacteria under the skin. As Lark was nervous of being examined and had already eaten that day, she was treated with antibiotics and booked in for sedation the following morning. Meg warned that the abscess might burst by itself, releasing a lot of pus – which would be messy and unpleasant smelling; if this happened it would mean we wouldn’t have to sedate her to lance it. The next day the abscess burst by itself and as promised, lots of pus was released. Lark's Mum and Dad did a great job of keeping the area clean whilst

the antibiotics treated the infection and she quickly recovered. Happily, her face is now much more symmetrical again and her life is now back to normal.
