Right now deciding where to place your savings is one of the hardest questions to answer. Responding to the on-going turmoil in the financial markets, the Bank of England has now reduced the Base Rate to a historic low of 1%, as figures recently confirmed Britain is experiencing its worst recession since the 1980s. Further interest rate reductions are anticipated in the coming months, and the Bank of England has also hinted that it may start to expand the money supply once interest rates fall to, or near, zero percent. Depending on your circumstances this could either be good or bad news. Anyone with a base-rate tracker mortgage must be delighted at seeing their monthly payments come down, and conversely, those with savings must be disappointed at the interest they are receiving. With the recent and dramatic interest rate reductions having all your savings in the bank may not make the sense it did twelve months ago.
