C
hildren getting the proper amount of sleep is very important. They need the right amount of sleep to function in school and at home. By the age of two, most children have spent more time asleep than awake and overall, a child will spend 40 percent of his or her childhood asleep. Sleep is especially important for children as it directly impacts mental and physical development.
P
er the sleep foundation different age groups require different amounts of sleep. Newborns sleep a total of 10.5 to 18 hours a day on an irregular schedule with periods of one to three hours spent awake. The sleep period may last a few minutes to several hours. During sleep, they are often active, twitching their arms and legs, smiling, sucking and generally appearing restless. This can become affected due to nighttime feedings.
B
y six months of age, nighttime feedings are usually not necessary and many infants sleep through the night; 70-80 percent will do so by nine months of age. Infants typically sleep 9-12 hours during the night and take 30 minute to two-hour naps, one to four times a day – fewer as they reach age one.
T
oddlers between the ages of 1-2 need about 11-14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. When they reach about 18 months of age their naptimes
will decrease to once a day lasting about one to three hours. Many toddlers experience sleep problems including resisting going to bed and nighttime awakenings. Nighttime fears and nightmares are also common.
P
reschoolers between the ages of 3-5 typically sleep 11-13 hours each night and most do not nap after five years of age. As with toddlers, difficulty falling asleep and waking up during the night are common.
C
hildren aged six to 13 need 9-11 hours of sleep. At the same time, there is an increasing demand on their time from school (e.g., homework), sports and other extracurricular and social activities. In addition, school-aged children become more interested in TV, computers, the media and Internet as well as caffeine products – all of which can lead to difficulty falling asleep, nightmares and disruptions to their sleep.
A
ll these are effective tips and strategies to make sure children are getting an effective amount of sleep. The right amount of sleep can lead to children becoming productive and positive.

goldenmeditation
By Matthew Beatty
How often would you tell your children not to study and just watch TV instead? Probably not too many times, right? Why, because you obviously want the best for them. And who other than you would know the best for your child? You always want to give them the best of everything, be it clothes, education or food. You get them the best gifts on their birthdays and do whatever it takes to keep them happy, healthy and be successful in life. And now it’s time to give them the best gift of their life – something which they will cherish lifelong and be grateful, for it will change their life for the better. A simple yet very effective technique called meditation - one of the most valuable skills we can teach our children. 1. To Harness the Monkey Mind. The nature of the mind, when stressed, is to jump from thought to thought like a monkey. Meditation gives them a healthy rest from the ‘monkey mind’ so they can function more effectively and with clarity. 2. To prepare for the challenges of Puberty. If you have an adolescent child, you probably would have seen that they have strong emotions and are easily influenced by the society around them. Meditation gives teenagers the access to a great feeling of inner stability and security. It allows them an insight into the inner wisdom to help them stay centered and strong through the hormonal changes in the body. 3. To De-Stress for Academic Success. Meditation gives our children the freedom from negative effects of stress and allows the mind to be fresh and inspired. It gives them an expansive and relaxed way of thinking 72 | golden mag
which can help bring creativity and clarity. 4. To support healthy emotional development. Meditation allows children to return to their natural rhythm and helps them cope with the emotions of frustration and fear. It helps to balance the whole system by supporting emotional development and gives rest to the mind so that they are not overwhelmed by their strong feelings. 5. To reach their full potential. Through meditation, your children can discover that there is so much more potential in their life, that the stresses in their life are petty, short-term problems and that they can be successful beyond their dreams. You child of today will make the leader of the future and they will need to be centered, strong and good lateral thinkers. The best we can do to support them is encourage them to practice meditation and access the untapped potential within.

golden education
By Matthew Beatty
In education, it’s important for students to become inspired and motivated. These are tips that will help you child succeed. Keep a relationship with your kids that is open, respectful and positive. Stay on your kids’ team, don’t play against them. This will allow you to be most influential with them, which is your most important parenting tool. Punishing, preaching, threatening and manipulating will get you nowhere and will be detrimental to your relationship and to their ultimate motivation. Remember, your job is to help them learn how to be responsible.
1
Incorporate the “when you” rule. When you finish studying you are welcome to go to Gavin’s house.” Or “When your homework is completed, we can discuss watching that movie you wanted to see on Netflix.” Enforce this rule and stick to it. If your child does not yet can plan and initiate and persevere, by sticking to this rule, you are helping them learn how to do what their own brain is not yet equipped to do, which is to create the structure for him.
2
When you are invited in. If your child is not studying and his grades are dropping, you’re invited in whether he wants you or there or not. Again, you’re there to help set up a structure that he is not able to create for himself. The structure might include scheduled study times, having the computer

out in a public place in your home, and saying, “No video games or TV until after homework is done.” You might decide that he must spend a certain number of hours devoted to study time. Ask the teacher. If your child’s grades and work habits are not up to par, you can set up a plan by sitting down with him and his teachers. He might have to check with them to make sure he has everything beforeleaving school, and then check with you before going back to school to make sure all his work is in his bag.
4
Don’t Futurize. When we see, our child seeming to have no interest in his life, it’s easy to start fast forwarding into the future. When he acts like he doesn’t care about anything except video games and his friends, we worry that he won’t be successful or even functional on his own. This ramps up our anxiety and our fear. But here’s the truth: none of us have a crystal ball or can really see into the future. Focusing on the negative things your child is doing will only bring the spotlight on them, and may set you both up for a power struggle. Instead, focus on your child’s positive traits and help him work on those in the present.

Resources Getting children involved in afterschool activities has in rewards. School shouldn’t be the only resource that our children get to show their development skills.
one Time Management and Prioritizing Extracurricular activities teach children how to manage their time and prioritize various tasks and commitments.
2
Exploring Diverse Interests The school band, drama club, or any sport may be an activity your children are interested in joining. By allowing your children the opportunity to explore diverse interests, you give them the opportunity to discover what they are passionate about. Once your children find an activity that they enjoy, succeeding in the activity could ultimately build their confidence and self-esteem. 88 | golden mag
3
Making a Contribution Extracurricular activities allow your children to make a contribution to their school or community, which is an important step in preparing them for life outside of academics.
four
Building Self-Esteem Mastering new skills can help build confidence in children. By participating in after-school activities, they can build their selfesteem in a relaxed setting as their activities provide the opportunity to be successful in something that they are passionate about.
5ive
College Applications Another benefit of after-school activities is that they look great on college applications. In addition to academic performance, many colleges look at what activities students are involved in outside of school as a way to fully understand each student.
6
Setting Goals After-school activities present opportunities for your children to develop their goalsetting skills. Most extracurricular activities involve reaching or achieving a goal, whether it be the lead actor in the school play, winning the state championship or coming in first place in the science fair. As a result, these activities help encourage students to work toward achieving those goals, while having fun at the same time.
se7en
Teamwork Sports teams, clubs and activities, like dancing and music, all require children to work together toward a common goal. By participating in these activities, your children develop the skills they need in order to successfully work with others. In addition, extracurricular activities let children to build relationships and socialize with peers who share their interests.
viii
Academics As mentioned previously, recent studies show a correlation between improved grades, behavior and work habits as a result of students’ involvement in after-school activities.
