EDITOR LETTER: FRANCES T. MCGRIER
Dear Readers, Thinking about of our spring and summer 2016 issue….I began to visualize the beautiful hues fill the world during this season. How amazing it is to see every color shared across the universe. Fashion transcends freedom without speaking. An expression and display of our similarities and differences. It’s desirable to oneself and pleasing to share with the world. A clear understanding of freedom, open to change from one day to the next, to try something new or to be comfortable with the old. There are characteristics to describe many looks, whether classic, trendy, modern, rock or hippie it’s all universal and socially OK. There are many facets of Golden Magazine in which I love, of course, but my favorite is the silent expression.
the most, CREATING a COLORFUL WORLD. Every silent page allows you to feel freely about what you’re seeing and reading. Fashion brings variations of enjoyment, feeling different fabrics, your appealing appearance, all different shades and styles in one word. So, as always There’s a we start this issue off production behind colorfully united in love with Fashion.
“
Once you purchased a publication, either it and that’s digital or print. Initially, you breeze through what I enjoy the it getting a feel of most, CREATING what’s in store. Then a COLORFUL you carefully comb through it, reading WORLD. articles, enjoying the pictures and naturally forming an opinion. Every page has a story whether it’s an advertisement, photo shoots or interviews. There’s a production behind it and that’s what I enjoy

here is nothing more important to a parent than the health of their child. We want our kids to be active and participating in activities keeping them busy. How often do we monitor what our children our putting into their systems. It’s important that our kids are eating and obtaining the proper nutrients to keep them healthy. Several schools have started taking vending machines in schools to promote a healthier eating lifestyle. Instead of buying our children happy meals how about more fruits and vegetables. When children are getting the proper nutrients that they body needs it helps them feel well and feel positive. The next time you cook or prepare a meal at home throw some vegetables on the plate to the side. The biggest misconception is that eating healthy is an expensive lifestyle. This is completely false. The same way we can go the grocery store and plan what we need in buying chips and other snacks we can plan on adding healthier items to the list. According to the Lets Move website which promotes healthy eating for our children it states that planning, purchasing and preparing food on a budget can help manage a reasonable healthy lifestyle. As parents we can’t put a price on the healthy of our children. When we but new clothes, sneakers, electronic gadgets buy some fruits and vegetables. I guarantee the material things will always be around so it’s time to start putting our children’s healthy as a priority. Simply buying burgers may help fill your child temporarily but filling your child with healthy food can promote a lifestyle they can take into adulthood. We need to make sure we our doing our part in promoting a healthy lifestyle to eliminate other health risk that could impact our children.

ducation is something that doesn’t just occur during the school year. Learning and teaching is something that we should help our children strive to obtain daily. As adults we learn from our experiences and the knowledge that have obtained from living, but now our children can learn in the classroom as well as at home through morals and values.
are involved in their child’s educational journey this motivates children to want to seek knowledge and strive for success. Everyone can’t become an entertainer or athlete but everyone can have knowledge to help them in their journey of life.
The opportunities are endless as the blessings will fall into place.
A child that has knowledge is capable of doing and becoming anything that they strive to become. The opportunities are endless as the blessings will fall into place. Please parents don’t put the responsibility of teaching solely on educators, we all have a responsibility. Everything can’t fit into a text book and every lesson can’t be taught during the school year so it’s important to teach at home. When parents
As parents we work to provide a shelter, clothes, food and other necessities for our children. While we work to provide these things lets stop to teach them with the fruits of knowledge they can have in their journey of life. You don’t need a PhD to teach a job all you need is time and dedication. If your child is struggling at math and you struggle as well, try to get your child a tutor or after school programs to help them perform better in the classroom. This story isn’t meant to teach you how to raise your child but rather offer an insight on how important an education is to the progression of your child.

what is
LUPUS?
BY MATTHEW BEATTY According to the Lupus Foundation Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. Lupus is something that is prevalent with African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities. Lupus is something that is constantly being treated and being tested on to find a cure. Lupus is something that can be related to stress. Emotional stress, such as a divorce, illness, death in the family, or other life complications, and anything that causes stress to the body, such as surgery, physical harm, pregnancy, or giving birth, are examples of environmental triggers that can set off lupus or bring about a lupus flare. It’s important to understand the facts about Lupus. The Lupus foundation list several facts about Lupus that you should know. •
Lupus is not contagious, not even through sexual contact. You cannot “catch” lupus from someone or “give” lupus to someone.
•
Lupus is not like or related to cancer. Cancer is a condition of malignant, abnormal tissues that grow rapidly and spread into surrounding tissues. Lupus is an autoimmune disease, as described above. However, some treatments for lupus may include immunosuppressant drugs that are also used in chemotherapy.
•
Lupus is not like or related to HIV (Human Immune Deficiency Virus) or AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). In HIV or AIDS the immune system is under active; in lupus, the immune system is overactive.
•
Lupus can range from mild to life-threatening and should always be treated by a doctor. With good medical care, most people with lupus can lead a full life.
•
Our research estimates that at least 1.5 million Americans have lupus. The actual
GOLDEN MAG | 47
number may be higher; however, there have been no large-scale studies to show the actual number of people in the U.S. living with lupus. •
More than 16,000 new cases of lupus are reported annually across the country.
•
It is believed that 5 million people throughout the world have a form of lupus.
•
Lupus strikes mostly women
of childbearing age (15-44). However, men, children, and teenagers develop lupus, too. Most people with lupus develop the disease between the ages of 15-44. •
Women of color are two to three times more likely to develop lupus than Caucasians.
•
People of all races and ethnic groups can develop lupus.
If you feel that you might have Lupus or would like to find out more about Lupus please visit the Lupus Foundation website which list local chapters in select cities that can offer assistance. Also speak with your Physician for additional questions and concerns.

hile the 2016 Olympics are this summer lets be mindful that the participants were once children and teenagers and had to practice to become great in their sport. This summer allow your kids to practice what they want to become. If seeing Lebron James is the idol that your child wants to become, then teach them about work ethic, dedication, and being focused. This doesn’t mean that your child will be the next Lebron but it will teach those values they can take with them in adulthood. Often times we try to push our kids in the direction to where we see fit. In the end unless they take time to practice and hone their craft the results won’t show. There’s nothing wrong with a child that wants to become an athlete especially if they are talented and willing to work hard. We should make sure as parents they are student athletes however. Students being the first priority and an athlete being secondary. No athlete has ever played forever in their sport there is always a plan b. This is where getting an education can be positive and influential to their success aside from sports. The next time your child decides they want to be an athlete make sure they are willing to not be just an athlete but become a scholarly athlete as well. Being an athlete is great but it’s limited to that sport they’re playing, but being intellectual as well can create long lasting opportunities outside of sports.

rt has a way to capture a message that someone is trying convey. Art is a form of expression that the artist might be feeling and would like to share to the public. Art impacts everyone from many different ages. This is true when we see child artist doing excellent works. The summer is here and instead of letting your child sit around the house and play video games all day encourage them to be creative. There are several art programs that young children can participate in. The art programs that are available allow children to participate as well as parents to join in as well. This can allow parents to have fun as well and join in on the activities that they can share with their children. According to the timeout website it list different activities that parents and children can share together. There are different forms of art that children can participate in. There is painting, blocks, and building sculptures that can allow children to use their intelligence and express themselves through creativity. If you’re not interested in getting involved and sitting down to create something visiting museums is another way to see and experience art. There are different museums in each city that post different forms of art your child can experience and enjoy. This can also lead to them being inspired and motivated to show their artistry themselves.
