EDITOR’S LETTER: FRANCES T. MCGRIER
WELCOME TO VOLUME 7! Dear Golden Family, Spring tends to bring a calm sense of rejuvenation, warmth, and great seasonal energy. This issue we are inspired by those moments of transformation. With the changing seasons we embrace the fresh, bright, creative collections of children designers. Casting off the old and gravitating towards rejuvenated moments creates an unforgettable quality that rests on the pages of Golden Magazine. We’ve cultivated articles that seize a magical quality while creating a space for sprouting models to grace each page. I’m in awe with each issue! I couldn’t be more excited about 2018 and all the opportunity it holds. These Golden stars possess great confidence, passion, and joy, on each set of Golden Magazine. We are here to touch hearts, inspire dreams, and to love universally. I’ve wanted to create a magazine since I became a mother of three in 2006. It was necessary to provide a space where children can celebrate their talent, highlight their awesomeness, and believe in their dreams! Hence, Golden Magazine was born: a timeless keepsake filled with beauty, resources, and a Golden lifestyle! Enjoy this Golden journey and let’s celebrate together.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT INTRODUCING
CHAE BLOUNT
by Samantha Welbeck
9-year-old Author & Founder of Chae’s Toy Chest Inspirational Speaker World’s Best Big Brother And… Beef Patty Lover
O
ften times we hear the saying “Children are the future”, and Chae Blount is an example of a child making a difference in the world NOW. Take a moment and think about what you were doing at 9 years of age. Maybe you enjoyed playing with dolls or action figures. Perhaps you engaged in outdoor games, such as double-dutch, tag, or racing. With all the nostalgic memories that may have come to mind, what is the likelihood that you remember a 9-year-old kid being invited to be a keynote speaker, organized toy drives in support of sick children in

hospitals, featured on cable news channel NY1 or being a 3 time published author? Chae Blount can proudly claim that he has done all of this at his youthful age. Chae’s star quality was evident very early. He began reading at 9 months old, and he participated in his first spelling bee at age 3. When Chae was 7 years old, his mother, Dianna Blount, was expecting a baby and began to prepare him by sharing information about how to care for his new brother. Inspired by his mother’s lessons, Chae went to his mother when his brother was 8 days old and
told her he wanted to write a book. As stated by Dianna, “I was trying to still balance our relationship because we were really close. With this new baby and not wanting Chae to feel left out, I’m like okay Chae! Absolutely! Go write a book.” Surprised by his work, Dianna questioned if he actually wrote it. What his mother thought would be a book made out of construction paper and glitter, turned out to be a well-written manual produced in a journal. Like the following greats, Woody and Buzz, Batman and Robin, along with Mario and Luigi, Chae and his mom
became a dynamic duo. She supported him with his dreams. She helped him explore different writing styles and navigate publishing options. His first book was entitled Chae’s Guide Book: How to be the best big brother or sister that you can be!. Since the first book, Chae has released two additional books called Chae’s Guide Book: How to be the BEST student you can be! and Chae’s Guide Book: How to save at a young age!. When asked what his motivation for the guidebooks was, Chae stated, “to share information and give tips to others”. All three of his books represent the lessons and values that his parents continue to instill in him, and they are an illustration of the magic that can be produced when you support your child. Despite all of his childpreneur endeavors, Chae indulges in all the joys of being a kid. He enjoys playing with friends, family, and gadgets, watching movies with mom, and eating beef patties. His favorite school subject is science, and his favorite books are Dogman and Captain Underpants. In the Blount household, it is very important that Chae remains a kid and enjoys his childhood. Dianna Blount stated, “I don’t push him to do anything. I
always ask him. So if he says, mom, I don’t really feel like doing that one. It’s an instant no...I feel like that is so important in keeping the balance for him. I want him to enjoy what he is doing. I don’t want it to be work.” With his plans to work on his fourth book, it is evident that Chae is enjoying himself. Chae Blount is just getting started. During our Golden interview, it was clear that Chae was bitten by the “entrepreneur bug” as he identified his self as the Jr. CEO of his mother’s company. In reply, mom laughed and stated, “You’re getting ahead of yourself”. Watch out world! When sharing what was on his bucket list, Chae stated, “I want to give money to homeless people, and give money to the hospitals so they can upgrade their hospitals and make it more fun for the kids”. According to his mom, his name is of Korean origin and means life. Reminiscent of his name, Chae continues to show his mom and the

world just how full of life he is. Mom states, “...it still amazes me...he always impresses me when it is time for him to read or be a keynote [speaker]. It’s still surreal!”. Though he is adamant that he is not a superhero, his commitment to helping others makes him heroic. I am sure Chae will continue to dazzle the world with his entrepreneur endeavors. After all, it is never too early for your son or daughter to start working towards their dreams. Chae’s books can be purchased on Amazon.com and he can be contacted at Chaeblount@gmail.com.

Golden ARTS

Martial Arts for Children can be fun and exciting. According to a recent post by Andrea Cespedes on www.Livestrong.com, your child can experience many benefits in practicing martial arts.
FITNESS
Fitness is a crucial element to all martial arts classes, especially when children are involved. Warmups with jumping jacks, pushups and stretches are common, and the movements of the martial art itself often challenge your muscles and cardiovascular system.
SELF DEFENSE
The ability to defend yourself against an assailant is an empowering feeling. Most martial arts use self-defense as a cornerstone of the entire program. The precise methods will vary from discipline to discipline, but you can be certain that with regular practice your child will learn to defend himself in a variety of ways. Many martial arts schools also teach street-smart techniques to kids to help avoid conflict altogether.
RESPECT
Martial arts are all about respect. Punching, kicking, throwing and locking are all secondary to the respect that is shown from the moment you walk into a dojo (school for practicing martial arts). Children learn to bow to the masters who came before them, and to their current instructors. They also learn to treat other students as they wish to be treated. Quality martial arts instructors regularly enforce students to practice respect for self, parents, teachers, and peers at every opportunity.

What kind of thinker is your child? Do they believe everything that is told to them? Are they able to solve mysteries on their own? Do they use critical thinking?
W
hat is critical thinking? Critical thinking comprises a number of different skills that help us learn to make decisions. It is the ability to evaluate information to determine whether it is right or wrong. Critical thinking is important for children because this can determine if children, as they grow older, are able to think for themselves or become easily influenced by others. One way to help a child develop critical thinking skills is by using brain teasers and riddles. Brain teasers and riddles are entertaining for everyone. Not only do they help a person focus, but they challenge you to think outside of the box. This helps children keep their minds sharp.
that requires complex thought to solve. It often compels thinking in unconventional ways with given constraints; sometimes it involves lateral thinking. Logic puzzles and riddles are specific types of brain teasers. Children completing brain teasers on a daily basis helps them grow and evolve into successful learners. Teachers and educators can use brain teasers in the classroom and enhance students in becoming critical thinkers. This can be an icebreaker which allows children to practice teamwork in the classroom. Parents can use brain teasers and riddles at home, too. This can be an enjoyable exercise to get your child to practice critical thinking and further develop these skills. Search brain teasers and riddles online for activities that you and your child can do together at home.

f you’re not familiar with the “Escape Room” phenomenon, it’s a craze sweeping the nation both digitally and in meeting spaces. You’re in a room. You’re locked in under some fictional narrative premise, and you need to get out in an hour or less — using your brain, your wits, your crazy ideas.

locations of Manhattan. As of now, the Midtown location offers the Biotech Labs and Cafe Belim room experiences, while in the SoHo location you can enjoy The Forgotten Library and Secluded Vault mystery spaces. Later this year they plan to add another mystery room, “Chapter 6”, in their SoHo location.
There are a few factors that set Mystery Room NYC apart from other Escape Room experiences. One is that Eric Siu, former biology teacher, and creator of Mystery Room NYC brings his teaching know-how to the design of the rooms. He intentionally created puzzles and experiences that provide multiple points of entry for players of different aptitudes and abilities, making it very kid-friendly. Beginners and younger players will find opportunities to engage with more seasoned, older and sophisticated players during play in the rooms.
If you’re looking for a completely different family bonding experience, Mystery Room NYC would be amusing. How about hosting your next birthday party in one of the grand escape spaces? We believe it would be an unforgettable adventure for a small group of creative kids ages 7 and up who relish a challenge!
Mystery Room NYC currently offers various escape room experiences, referred to as “Chapters” in two

ith summer break just around the corner, there are many places to travel for family vacations. Instead of listing a bunch of destinations, this article will discuss what to look for when choosing your next excursion. Before you decide on your destination, you must first consider the of the trip. The cost is important because this determines if you and your family will be able to participate in any activities while on the trip. There’s no fun in sitting in a hotel room without being able to enjoy the amenities of your chosen destination. Next, you should research the method of transportation and the distance. Whether your traveling by land, sea, or air, considering the mode of travel is important when looking for a family vacation. How long does it take to get there? for five days but it takes 2-3 days to get there, the additional days have to be included in your time away from home. If there is a time limit put on the trip this has to be taken into consideration. Lastly, its time to plan your stay while the family is away. What will you do once you arrive at your destination? DIY spa day

By Sakeena Brooks-Gales
owadays everyone has a schedule that is loaded to capacity and making time to relax is a rarity. Whether its dance classes, study groups, preparation for a science fair, working late at the office, or sheer burnout from being a Wonder Mom, both mother and daughter might suffer from “No Time To Chill!” Time quickly passes us and we easily forget how important it is to spend time with each other. So when the opportunity arises to get in a day of togetherness, make the time well worth it. Treat yourselves to a day of pampering with these Do It Yourself activities that will be sure to provide lots of smiles, laughs, and don’t forget the “oohs and ahhs”.
Mommy & Me
Now that the day is scheduled, let’s get it planned! How delicious would it be to spend the day doing the following? • Making a Golden yellow bath bomb – don’t forget to add your favorite scent (we like pineapple) • Massaging your hands and painting your nails – a good old fashion manicure • Embellishing a pair of flip-flops – add a little or a lot to show off those toes • Enjoying a relaxing pedicure – a perfect way to sit back and unwind • Soaking in a soothing bath filled with the effervescence of your Golden bath bomb • Sipping a tropical mocktail with your favorite girl – Cheers!
GOLDEN MAG | 39
Golden Yellow Bath Bomb
What you’ll need:
• 1 cup of baking soda • ½ cup of citric acid • ½ cup of Epsom salt • ½ cup of cornstarch • 2 teaspoons of powdered all natural food coloring - yellow (we use natural food coloring because it won’t stain the tub!) • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil • 10 drops of Essential oils (we chose pineapple) • 1 teaspoon of water
Additional supplies needed:
• Rubber gloves (optional) • Large mixing bowl • Whisk • Glass measuring cup with a spout • Measuring cups/spoons • Bath bomb molds
Instructions For Creating Your Bath Bombs
• In a large bowl whisk together the dry ingredients: baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salt, cornstarch and powdered food coloring • Melt the coconut oil in the glass measuring cup with spout • Add the additional liquid ingredients to the melted coconut oil: water and Essential oils • Continuously whisk the liquids and very slowly pour into the dry ingredients until it’s well combined. The outcome should be similar to dry, crumbly sand and should not be a “wet” consistency. Warning: If the mixture gets too wet it will activate the fizzy part of the bath bomb! • Tightly pack the mixture into each half of the mold using your fingers. Once both sides are filled very firmly, press the two sides together, closing the mold. • Let the bath bomb sit in the mold overnight. The next day lightly tap the mold (in a circular motion) with a spoon and very carefully open and remove bath bomb.

“I Did That!” Embellished Flip-Flops After that delightful pedicure, all girls (moms included) should show off those polished little piggies with a perfect pair of flip-flops specially adorned by you. There are no rules to follow here! Allow your creative spirit to guide you in crafting your one-of-a-kind pair of thonged beauties. But if you need a little inspiration to get your juices flowing, try using some of these embellishments to decorate them:
What you’ll need:
• Ribbon • Beads • Embroidery Floss • Fabric flowers, small or large • Plastic gems or rhinestones – don’t be afraid to add colors • Opaque paint markers
You may need to have a pair of scissors and a bottle of Fabri-Tac permanent adhesive handy to help with adding the items to the flip-flops. Sky’s the limit and possibilities are endless as long as you design them with love. But most importantly, work together, both mom and daughter, and have tons of fun just spending time crafting and creating!
Non-Alcoholic GOLDEN Sangria Now that the day’s festivities are winding down, why not end with a delicious mocktail that both you and your mini-me can enjoy? The recipe is very simple, but guaranteed to be a delight!
Shopping List:
• 1 medium to large Golden Delicious apple • 1 cup of raspberries • 1 cup of blueberries • 1 can of club soda • 1 can of cold ginger ale • 16 oz bottle of apple juice or cider
*You’ll need to have a large pitcher and two glasses to serve your sangria
Let’s Get Started: • Cut the apple into thin slices; be sure to remove the seeds • Roughly chop both the raspberries and blueberries • Add all of the fruit into the pitcher • Pour the entire can of club soda into the pitcher, followed by the cold can of ginger ale • Slowly pour in the bottle of apple juice or cider • Gently stir; stirring it too fast may cause it to fizzle and lose the carbonation from the soda • Serve and enjoy

GETTING YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR... INTERVIEW WITH ANDREA LOCKHART-PHOENIX, AUTHOR OF THE MINI MODELING MANUAL FOR KIDS by Sakeena Brooks-Gales
“
I have the most beautiful baby in the world!” – a common belief amongst all new moms and dads the moment they set their eyes on their new bundle of joy. Although beauty comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, most parents want to “share” their little one’s beauty with the masses, but often wonder, “Could she be a model?” Looking down into their child’s beautifully bright eyes usually catapults the desire to get their kid into modeling. However, their child’s million dollar smile is usually the catalyst for parents to actively explore the options and research the possibilities. Some start scouting agencies as early as infancy or once the child is able to follow simple commands, but either way, there is a long journey that they’ll take in an attempt to be the next big star. Mrs. Andrea Lockhart-Phoenix is a seasoned veteran of the industries; a mom to a child model and actor. Andrea documented her expertise in what is titled “The Mini Modeling Manual for Kids”, an easy to follow, enjoyable read for parents who have a need to sift through the chaotic energy of the fashion and entertainment industries. She provides clear direction and assistance to caregivers by sharing her opinions and results from the tons of auditions, go-sees, and bookings that her daughter, Athena Phoenix, experienced. Golden Magazine was adamant about shedding light on the
book, but more importantly, providing a lane to an author who so generously simplified the process of getting your gorgeous child recognized and ultimately signed.
this treasure trove of facts and her personal outlook on the industries. Her motive was simple, “put all of the information in the book so a parent can read”. She knew that there was so much for a parent to absorb, whether it was understanding the types of agents, to being knowledgeable on commonly used terminology in the business. After receiving a barrage of compliments on her daughter’s genuinely good looks, Andrea brought Athena to a Golden Magazine audition during the summer of 2012. With the pictures that she received from the event, she sought out various agencies to take a stab at getting her two-year-old daughter signed. Although she received callbacks to meet with various agencies, she quickly discovered that Athena was shy, or so she believed. As with all casting calls, her daughter had to speak to the agents on a oneto-one basis without the presence of her mom, and her daughter remained somewhat withdrawn. Questioning Athena about her lack of engagement resulted in her reminding her mother that she was taught to “never talk to strangers”. At that point, Mrs. Lockhart-Phoenix made the decision to put modeling on hold until her little girl was more comfortable. When Athena turned five she asked her mom if she could become a model and they decided to try again. Athena playfully said, “I want pictures”, letting
As we began the interview you could see that Andrea had the same killer smile as her daughter Athena – the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. She was very calm and settled which immediately indicated that she had a knack for being patient, a praised upon characteristic when being a mom of a child model. She informed me that she is a graduate student and that her studies initially distracted her from documenting this guide. Over a 13 to 14 month period, she pondered the idea and developed Athena, age 2

mom know that this was a choice Athena made and it wasn’t coaxed by a mother’s influence. She shared a very candid moment when we discussed any fears or discouragement she may have faced during the modeling experience. Very early she taught her daughter about being confident, yet respectful of her competitors while on auditions. On a few occasions, her daughter was the subject of antagonizing stares and whispers by other moms and models, which Athena didn’t know how to interpret. Mom and daughter talked about being positive, having thick skin, and remembering to be kind to others, even when there wasn’t any reciprocity. Luckily, they didn’t allow the negativity of others to take away from the fun Athena experienced. Andrea exclaimed, “it isn’t about your child being beautiful, it’s all about personality! It has nothing to do with looks. If your child is going to go in there, by themselves, in a room with complete strangers and they’re able to talk and express themselves, those are the kids that will be getting called back or booked!”
her daughter’s personality and the Casting Director’s specifications. Key factors to support the demands of the modeling and TV world are “sacrifices, communication, and investments”, according to
submission isn’t always the perfect fit and promotes that you only stay with the representation that you truly feel has the best interest of your child. “If you feel uncomfortable, ask questions; don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call and ask what’s going on.” Andrea uses the money her daughter makes to build her college fund. One day Athena dreams of being a doctor.
It isn't about your child being beautiful, it's all about personality!
Despite a few bleak moments, both Andrea and Athena have made plenty of friends over the years. Most recently Athena would finish reading her lines and jovially say, “I’m done, mom. I’m going to go make some friends!” One would believe that Mrs. Lockhart-Phoenix wouldn’t invest so much of her personal time in making her daughter’s dreams come true if there wasn’t an abundance of positive memories. She informed me that a parent or guardian needs to have a very flexible schedule when embarking on this journey. At any given moment, your child could be called to a different state for a booking, or have auditions scheduled on several days during the week. Her demanding schedule takes away from being a “Mom-ager”. Yet she entrusts that their agents will send her daughter to go-sees that match
Andrea. She mentions that families can spend up to $500 or more for pictures per annum to stay abreast of the competition. As pointed out by Mrs. Lockhart-Phoenix, “Why would someone book my daughter if they keep seeing the same pictures year after year? They want to see that you are taking this seriously.” Andrea stated that every agency or manager that responds to your child’s
While Mrs. Lockhart-Phoenix recognizes that she has the ability to manage children and help a plethora of budding careers, she is content with only providing the tools to be successful in the business by writing the Mini Modeling Manual for Kids. During her free time, she does serve as a consultant by providing guidance, offering styling, advice, and preparing the children for auditions. Upon completion of her Master’s degree, she said that she may revisit the opportunity to be more involved in the business, cashing in on all of the networking she has done over the years. There might even be a possibility of a sequel, discussing her personal thoughts as a mom in the modeling and entertainment industries. But for now, she is happy with letting Athena be a child in this glorious game and shedding light on those who may need their paths lit. Andrea Lockhart-Phoenix is in the last stages of her graduate degree in Library & Information Science. She is inundated with the task of finalizing her thesis. Although she is employed full time, she still makes the necessary sacrifices to take her daughter on auditions. Andrea lives in Harlem, NY with her husband and daughter. She can be contacted for consulting services at andrea.lockhart1@ gmail.com. You can purchase a digital copy of the Mini Modeling Manual for Kids at www.issuu.com/ andrea.lockhart1 or by searching AndreaLockhart.

icking off the festivities in a majestic ballroom of the Stewart Hotel in the heart of New York City, the melodic sounds played by DJ Fussyman filled the air. The guests’ seats were adorned with gift bags and gold backpacks sponsored by Shea Moisture beauty products and Fashion Angels accessories. Over a dozen of sponsors supported the event with names such as KidPik, Natural Bunch Hair Care, Pastel Cakes, Treehouse Books, Bruce Arts, Say Cheeze, Kurve Jewelry, Heart Me Jewelry, Splashlings, Balloons by Renee, Soriee and Sugar, Royal Lips, Ameenha Lee Project, Young Chef La Cocina Delianna, Plush Drinks and Pepsi. Before the show began guests roamed the foyer and shopped various booths filled with a variety of vendors such as Melba’s Totes, I Love Your Brown books & apparel, Shades of A Cure coloring books, Say Cheeze Cotton Candy & Popcorn, Spandzbandz, and a bright fun-filled photo booth. The 6th Golden Kids Runway – Fashion Fights for a Cause (GKR) partnered with Cure Violence whose efforts attempts to put an end to the spread of violence by using the methods and strategies associated with disease control by detecting and interrupting conflicts, identifying and treating the highest risk individuals, and changing social norms. This production was unlike any other GKR experience because it featured an additional VIP Experience “Mini-Mogul Fashion Show”, which showcased a snippet of several brands’ product lines. The show kicked off with a remarkable performance by child musicians, The Donaldson Brothers, who played the violin and cello. Various fashion industry officials, celebrities, designers, bloggers, and stylists gathered to celebrate the magnificent runway powered by Industry Kids Events, Malika T. Manning Marketing, and Golden Magazine.
The main event, the “6th Golden Kids Runway”, took off with a bang as the talented Golden models graced the catwalk showcasing twelve designers, performances sparked the runway with sensational dancer Fatouma, a second performance from The Donaldson Brothers, and a finale by remarkable singer Alyssa Cheatam. The incredible hosts, amazing models, and audacious performers took the show by storm and warmed the hearts of those filling the audience. Golden Kids Runway celebrated today’s children by shaping a blissful atmosphere for all to enjoy. GKR highlighted children’s greatness and showcased talented designers, all for a great cause. Overall everyone involved had a monumental time and anxiously awaits the next Golden Kids Runway! 124 | GOLDEN MAG
