WHY CHRISTIANITY IS WORTH CONSIDERING
B
en Shaw has a passion for evangelism. In his new book he outlines seven reasons why Christianity is worth considering with an open mind and explores the answers Jesus offers to life’s big questions. Here’s an extract from the first chapter. We go to work, we socialise with our friends, we sometimes reach our ambitions, we have our holidays, and most of us (in the West) have all the toys we could ever need—yet so many of us are still unsatisfied and looking for more. Most

of us feel that there’s something more to life than just what meets the eye—that there’s more to our existence than just living for 80 years or so and then dying. In the 1st century, around 2,000 years ago, Jesus made some mind-bending claims and gave the world some mind bending answers to our deepest questions about life and why we’re all here. With great confidence, he talked about the meaning of life, true love, the reality and nature of God, where to find hope

and happiness, and what happens to us beyond the grave. He taught his followers about “life … to the full” and how to get it (John 10 v 10). He effectively gave the greatest series of TED Talks of all time, holding audiences captivated for hours on end. Jesus gave answers to many of the questions that we humans have been asking ourselves since the beginning of time. You may not have given Christianity any serious thought as an adult or even as a child, but here are two reasons why
Jesus and his teachings about life are worth considering. First, while there have been many people who have given their answers to life’s biggest questions, none have had a worldwide impact as much as Jesus. He is arguably the most influential person that has ever lived. He has inspired art and architecture for centuries. More songs and books have been written about him than about any other figure in history. Apparently, the Library of
What Jesus has said seems to have struck a chord with many of us. And even if you disagree with what he had to say, his answers are at least worth taking an honest and open-minded look at from a cultural and educational point of view. Second, Jesus backed up his words with incredible actions. He wasn’t just an amazing orator or wordsmith with some fancy answers to our deepest questions. When he talked about life and life to the full, he backed it up by raising people from

Christianity offers some profound and honest answers to our deepest questions and longings, backed up by the incredible life of the person at its centre: Jesus Christ. Through his words, parables and teachings, he gave powerful and thought-provoking answers to the very questions so many of us innately have; and those answers have actually shaped our world. Surely they are at least worth considering, aren’t they?

the dead. When he talked about seeing what the world was really all about, he then healed people from blindness. And when he preached about love and servant-heartednessbeing the keys to living a fulfilled life, he then went on to serve others and give up his own life to a grisly death on a Roman cross. If you’re sceptical about whether all that is really possible, that’s fair enough. For now, consider that if these actions of Jesus

HOW TO LIVE CONFIDENTLY FOR CHRIST TODAY
W
e know that we are saved by faith, but how do we live by faith in a society increasingly opposed to God’s ways and God’s word? Here’s an extract from the introduction of Alistair Begg’s new book on how to live confidently for Christ today. In reality, for us in the English-speaking West, this world has tended to feel very much like home, and our treasures have been right before our eyes. But now we are finally facing the fact
8|
that this broken, sinful world in which we live is not actually our home— that what the Bible says concerning believers in this world is really true: that we really are aliens and that we really are strangers. The fact of the matter is that it has always been true that we are strangers in and to this world. It has just been clouded, obscured by the size and influence and legal protection of the church in most of the Western world. But this world is not actually our home. We’re not supposed to be settling

down here forever. We’re not supposed to be treating this life the way other people treat it, as if this is the be-all and end-all of everything, or as if as Christians we can have a comfortable, respectable, prosperous life here and look forward to even more of those things in eternity. Secularism pushes back again and again against what the Bible says about sexual ethics, about salvation, about education, about the role and reach of the state, or about matters
of public welfare. Public opinion has turned against Christians. As the British columnist and social commentator Melanie Phillips puts it, we live in a culture… “ … which will have no truck with claims such as religious miracles or the existence of God. These are dismissed as the superstitious beliefs of a bygone primitive age of myth and bigotry.” (The World Turned Upside Down, page 2)
Superstitious bigotry. Suddenly, as a minority
How are you going to live in this new normal? Enter the book of Daniel. Daniel and his friends had grown up in the promised land, in Judah. As young men, they found themselves being dragged into exile, far away from the society they had known, into a city that neither knew of nor cared about nor was impressed by their faith or their lives. Daniel would live in Babylon from his late teens or early twenties until he was in his eighties or nineties. Most likely he

group within an increasingly secularized nation, we are finding out how it feels to be outsiders. And we don’t like it. We’re not used to it. And it’s easy to become bewildered, angry, defensive, or defeated.
died there. These exiles were understandably fearful of the power that held them in its grip, and were wondering what God was doing and whether they could (or should) keep obeying him in such circumstances.
So the question is, what does it look like to live as a Christian in a society that does not like what Christians believe, what we say, and how we live?
And so the message of Daniel is incredibly relevant for us in our generation. Not because it maps out a strategy
for how to deal with our new lack of status—or to reverse it. Not because Daniel was a great man and we need to follow his example, buck up, and be more like him. Yes, it’s a good idea to seek to emulate the men and women of faith we find in the pages of the Bible. But no, this book will not tell you to be like Daniel. Instead, it will call you to believe in Daniel’s God. We will be able to navigate our present moment to the extent that we realize that the God of the exiles in the sixth century BC has not changed in the intervening two and a half millennia. For the overarching message is simply this: God is powerful, and God is sovereign, and even in the face of circumstances that appear to be prevailing against his people, we may trust him entirely. The battle may seem to be tilting against the church, but still God reigns supreme. Here is how you stand firm and live bravely when the wind is blowing hard against you. Alistair Begg is Senior Pastor at Parkside Church, Cleveland, Ohio, and Bible teacher at Truth For Life, the worldwide radio and online ministry.

READ AS A CHURCH
GROW IN LOVE FOR YOUR CHURCH
I
t’s been a long time since churches met in their usual form. This timely new book by Tony Merida looks at what church is, why it’s exciting and how you can be part of it.
volving around six friends who live in Manhattan, was wildly popular in the 90s. (And this show has recently witnessed a resurgence of interest among millennials and Gen-Zers.)
As image-bearers of God, people are made for community. The triune God is a relational God, and he has created us for relationships. Perhaps this is why so many popular television shows have to do with community. In the 80s, Cheers featured a group of friends who met to socialize at a local bar. Friends, a show re-
God has given us a need for community—and he has given us the place where that need for community is met: the church. Sin breaks fellowship with God and with others, but we are reconciled to God and one another through the gospel. God, then, establishes this unity in Christ. But we do have

to maintain it (Ephesians 4 v 2). He gives us a place where we belong; now we need to commit to belonging. Experiencing the blessing of community requires you to avoid distancing yourself from other brothers and sisters in the church, and to avoid neglecting times together (in small groups, in corporate worship, and in ongoing communication). This is what made the COVID-19 experience so challenging, and it is why churches creatively tried to keep believers
connected in community and worship, albeit in less than ideal ways. When I began following Jesus in college, I was very involved in campus ministry and local outreach events, but actually I thought I could do more apart from the local church. I thought the church would slow me down. I was into “movements” and “events,” not the church. I was aware of crazy drama in churches and wanted no part of it. I was interested in ministering to my age group (or slightly younger), not to a multigenerational group of folks. I was into the Christian subculture, not slowplodding faithfulness in the context of the church. Much of this was due to my shoddy understanding of the church prior to studying the Scriptures carefully. I had failed to see the church from Jesus’ perspective—to understand the way the Bible describes the church. And I believe that there are many in this same position today. We cannot allow experience or preference to rule us when considering the church; we must see the church biblically. And that means seeing the church joyfully.
Belonging to a church means investing your life in a gospel-centered community of believers who joyfully serve one another and advance Jesus’ mission together. Several decades ago, the great Welsh preacher D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones underscored the need for a joyful church: “The greatest need of the hour is a revived and joyful church … Unhappy Christians are a poor recommendation for the faith … The exuberant joy of the early Christians was one of the most potent factors in the spread of Christianity”. (Spiritual Depression, p 5) It’s this joy—a Christ-centered joy experienced even in suffering—that’s unique, powerful, uplifting, and attractive. This doesn’t mean the church will be devoid of sorrow; it means that even in sorrow there is a well of joy from which to drink: the wells of our salvation. In hard times, we can be “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” (2 Corinthians 6 v 10). It’s a privilege to belong to the new-covenant people of God: to be part of those who have been saved through repentance and faith in Christ Jesus, who
possess the indwelling Holy Spirit, who are joined in a local gathering, who assemble to hear the word preached, who engage in corporate worship, who are led by qualified pastors/ elders, and who enjoy the wonder of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. It is an awesome thing to be part of those who commit to practicing the “one another”s of Scripture, and who scatter to fulfill the Great Commandment (love your neighbor) and the Great Commission (make disciples of all nations). Active belonging is the first privilege and responsibility of every Christian, and the doorway to the others. What Hospitality Really Is
“
OH NO!
You’re not going to tell us we need to have more people round for dinner, are you?” That was my friend Debbie’s response when I told her that I was writing this book. I was surprised: Debbie is a fantastic cook, confident and outgoing, and always seems to have people staying in her home. But even she evidently feels overburdened and exhausted by the idea of hospitality. I have felt like that too.
16 |
One low point came after a particularly long morning at church. I had arrived early to practise with the band, played for the service, had long conversations with a few people I knew were struggling, prayed with a couple of others, and was now trying—unsuccessfully—to extract my kids so we could get home. A well-meaning woman drew me aside and suggested that I think about having more people round for lunch on Sundays. She was concerned that my husband had been the pastor of our church for
Go to thegoodbook.co.uk/hospitality
a couple of years and there were people we still hadn’t had over. Yes, I had small children, worked part- time and was involved in several different ministries; but another local pastor’s wife always had ten people over for Sunday lunch, she pointed out, while I only ever seemed to invite a few at a time. I went home feeling guilty, discouraged and exhausted. The idea of hospitality had become a burden. A few years later, I was teaching on the New Testament qualifications
for church leaders (in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1). As we noted that an elder must be hospitable, I found myself asking, “Does Paul really mean that his wife (if he has one) must be great at cooking for loads of people? What if he doesn’t marry? What if he marries a wife who struggles with anxiety or depression—or an eating disorder? What if he suffers with those things himself? What if he lives in a tiny flat with no dining table? What if he’s an introvert? What if...?”
order in! But most of us have many more friends who find the idea of hospitality overwhelming. Even some of those who appear to be great at hospitality secretly struggle with it.
just one or two practical points from each chapter and start to weave them into your daily habits. If you do, you’ll be encouraged by how simple hospitality can be—and how rewarding it is too.
It’s time to rethink what hospitality is all about. I want to show that hospitality doesn’t have to be exhausting and overwhelming. And that is because it is not so much about what we do, but why we do it.
I imagine that, like me and like Debbie, you feel very ordinary. I don’t want to persuade you otherwise—we are ordinary. But our God is extraordinary. He invites us to reflect him in ordinary places to ordinary people—and he can do extraordinary things through us as we do.
So I’m not going to do that either.
This is not a “7 Steps to Becoming the Perfect Host” book. Rather, it is an invitation to join me on a journey, learning to welcome like Jesus does. You won’t need a large house or a dining table that seats eight— Jesus never hosted a fancy dinner party! You won’t need a big food budget or lots of free time. You won’t even need to be especially outgoing or confident. You just need to delight in God’s welcome and desire to reflect it to those around you.
We will all have friends who are great at hosting people for meals in their homes. Some are confident cooks; others are confident enough to say they’re not—and
I have made lots of practical suggestions throughout the chapters. If you try to do them all, it will be overwhelming—and that is not the point of this book! Pick
It is not just church leaders: the Bible calls all followers of Jesus to “practise hospitality”, regardless of marital status, salary or house size—and to do it “without grumbling” (Romans 12 v 13; 1 Peter 4 v 9). But nowhere does it talk about tableware or traybakes. Neither does it link hospitality with expense, exhaustion or an extroverted personality.

Running to the Finish Line S
ometimes we all need encouragement to keep going when our faith grows weary. Here’s an extract from Richard Coekin’s new book which looks at Hebrews chapter 11 for inspiration. In April 2019 I stood among huge, jostling crowds lining the Embankment in London amidst a cacophony of noise. I was there to cheer my son along as he ran the London Marathon with a friend to raise support for disadvantaged kids. It wasn’t the elite ath-

letes who were most impressive— bounding along like speedy gazelles. It was the charity runners—staggering around the 26-mile course from Blackheath to Buckingham Palace for countless great causes, often in ridiculous costumes. It was so humbling to watch their commitment. And moving to hear their supporters bellowing encouragements with all manner of horns and rattles and whistles. And what was motivating the colossal effort of so many thousands of ordinary runners? The

finishing line! The satisfaction of completing the course; the triumph of collecting a winner’s medal; the joy of helping some people in need. Unsurprisingly, it’s the support of the crowds that apparently keeps exhausted runners going through the inevitable muscle and joint fatigue, dehydration and “hitting the wall”. The London Marathon serves as a metaphor for the Christian life. For, while it’s an incredible privilege to know God through Jesus, Christians get weary, face oppo-
sition and feel discouraged. We certainly want the everlasting satisfaction, triumph and joy of the finish line in heaven. But the personal disappointment of apparently unanswered prayers, the increasingly fierce opposition of Western “identity politics” or the costly grind of commitment to our local church can suck the joy out of us—and sometimes we just feel like giving up. Like those London Marathon runners, we need the support of our spiritual family and friends
ful encouragements for weary, beleaguered and discouraged Christians. It’s like that crowd lining the London Embankment: characters from Bible history, many generations of our spiritual family, who have all completed the course themselves, cheering us on. They manage our expectations with refreshing honesty in a world of lies and spin. They remind us of the glory and blessing that await us at the finishing line in the kindness of God and the happiness
“This book on Hebrews 11 is not only gripping to read, it is also simultaneously deeply encouraging and challenging. It is thoughtful, well-illustrated, and packed with gold!”
Christian believers in need of refreshment. It could be ideal for private devotional reading—or perhaps as holiday reading. It could be a timely gift for a discouraged Christian friend, or as background reading to a series of small-group studies in Hebrews 11. My prayer is that God will graciously use it to encourage and empower you to keep running—living by faith in the promises of God and empowered by faith—for life.

WHY WRITE A CHRISTIAN BOOK ABOUT PERIODS?
H
ere are three reasons:
1. The Bible speaks to all of life For roughly 50% of the population, for a large section of our lives, periods are a regular reality. 400-500 times in your lifetime—and for 60 days of the year—you’re on your period. To a greater or lesser extent, our menstrual cycle shapes our schedule, what we do and how we feel in the course of any given month—even beyond that particular “time of the month”. 24 |
If you’re a Christian, there is not one area of life which can be divorced from your faith. There is not one area that God declares himself uninterested in. If the biggest reality underpinning the universe is that Jesus is Lord and that he died to bring us into an eternal relationship with God, then that should shape how we think about all the other realities of our day-to-day existence. There are plenty of great books out there that show you what the Bible says when it comes to social media, work,
Go to thegoodbook.co.uk/periods
leisure, sex, beauty or friendship. But periods? Not so much. But God can—indeed, God wants to—speak into how we experience periods. He wants to affirm us and encourage us and challenge us as we seek to walk with Jesus on every day of the month. 2. Life speaks the gospel to us It works the other way round too. It’s not just that the Bible speaks to us about real life; real life speaks to us about the gospel. “Consider the ravens…” says Jesus;
“Consider how the wild flowers grow…” (Luke 12 v 24, 27). Look around, says Jesus, and see how God…. And while, ok, he didn’t quite say, Consider your periods, the general principle is that we live in a created world that speaks of its Creator. So considering our periods is what we’re going to do here. This means periods don’t just have to be something we endure or put up with. They can also be something positive: something that reminds us of the spiritual realities that underpin our existence, and that presents us with an opportunity to fix our eyes on the Lord Jesus.
health inequalities, the gender pain gap, specific conditions such as endometriosis, and what to call the people who have periods—women, menstruators, or something else?
3. If we don’t look to the Bible to shape our thinking, our culture will shape our thinking instead
So… is Christianity the bad guy here? How do we make sense of what the Bible says about periods when it jars with the way 21st-century Westerners see things?
Let’s be honest: your pastor probably won’t be preaching about periods anytime soon. But there are plenty of other people who will. The last few years have seen an increasing number of voices talking about periods in our culture. Social media is full of lively conversations on issues such as period poverty, the tampon tax, free bleeding, environmentally-friendly menstrual-hygiene choices,
Here’s the thing: nothing we read or watch or listen to is ideologically neutral—it’s all subtly (or not so subtly) telling us how to think and how to act. If religion gets a mention, it’s almost always in negative terms. Christianity is blamed for perpetuating centuries of taboos around periods. Words like “puritanical” are used as an insult.
If we’re not proactive about thinking Christianly about a subject, then we’ll just end up having our thinking shaped by what the world tells us. And while that’s rarely going to be all wrong, it’s not going to be all right, either. For Christians, it’s Scripture which is meant to define the good, the bad and the important. We need to learn to think critically
about culture—to get equipped to sift truth from error, to identify wisdom amid the folly, and to have all our thinking shaped by God’s word. Whoever you are, my aim is that you reach the end of this book celebrating who God has made you and how God has saved you, and the fact that he speaks liberating and positive truth into all of life’s experiences. Extract from A Brief Theology of Periods (Yes, Really).

Peace for the Anxious Soul H
aving battled with anxiety in her own life, Helen Thorne offers words of hope and help to both Christians and non-Christians who feel anxious. Here is a sample of her new book. I can’t do this anymore… No one cares… It’s all so out of control… There is no hope… If you’re anything like me, such thoughts have crossed your mind in recent months. Whether you’ve been working relentlessly on the front line or on furlough and bored; whether you’ve been juggling the multi-faceted pressures of a home

with many people or enduring the relentless silence, where it’s just you alone; whether you’ve been protected from the worst losses of recent times or have known the horrors of personal grief, unemployment, homelessness and more—the pandemic has left most of us reeling, anxious in many ways. Since the start of 2020, the Christian walk has felt increasingly like a limp. Such doubts should not surprise, the pandemic has brought a tsunami of pain that is bound to impact our gaze. We

can treat each other with compassion as we struggle with our anxious thoughts— seeing straight when brought low is so very hard to do. So, what are we to do? In the face of those thoughts, there’s a choice to be made in every believer’s heart: feed the lies or fight the lies. The path we take will have a profound impact on how we do. OPTION A is the easiest by far. A difficult thing happens and we feel a fleeting sense of despair. Another tough thing appears and we allow
it to bolster our suspicion that life is bleak. With every subsequent moment of suffering our opinion that there is no hope gets stronger. Until, one day, we wake up and discover hope is completely out of view. We practise interpreting hard things as hopeless things. And, in the end, we become what we have been training to be: someone who can see nothing good in the months ahead. Our taught theology may survive—we might still be able to articulate something of God’s goodness that we once read in a book—but we don’t live it, we don’t love it, because we’ve spent too long practising staring into the dark. OPTION B is a far harder call. It involves noticing the lies as they begin to form. It means living out Paul’s call to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). To grab hold of our, often instinctual, anxious interpretations and to measure them by the plumbline of Scripture and to see where they are leading
us astray. This is no mere positive thinking—the Bible never calls us to positive affirmations each day—but rather to see where our thoughts have departed from God’s sure and certain word and to dive deep into the abundant evidence God provides that, as his children, we are safe, loved, equipped and more. Battles are never easy. There can be complicating factors along the way. But, in the Christian life, we are never called to fight alone. The Spirit of God has promised to be at work in our hearts and to keep changing us until we are perfectly like Jesus (Philippians 1:6). Our brothers and sisters in Christ, even when our only access to them is socially distanced, are there to spur us on (Hebrews 10:24). We can listen to each other’s words and when we hear one another articulating things that are leading us to fear, despair, bitterness, insecurity or sin we can (gently) nudge each other to come back to the one who brings life and light. We can dig deep into passages like Ephesians 1 that articulate God’s identity and ours with
such clarity. We can look at the narratives of Genesis, Exodus and Ruth and see God’s unending provision and care. And, when exhausted, we can keep doing so in bite-sized yet beautiful ways—drip-feeding droplets of truth into each other’s parched lives. And, as we take thoughts captive, little by little we will find wonderful growth begins to appear. Confidence, trust, perseverance, obedience, hope—even joy. Isn’t that the sort of spiritual fruit we’d like to bear?
