INGREDIENTS

2 lemons, thinly sliced 2 limes, thinly sliced (save a few slices for garnish) 1 apple, sliced 1 c. blueberries 1 (12-oz.) can ginger beer 2 (12-oz.) bottles wheat beer 1 c. lemonade 1/2 c. seltzer

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher (or a large bowl) and stir. Chill for 2 hours, or until cold. 2. Serve with lime slices for garnish.

1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. chili powder Lime wedges 2 oz. fresh lime juice 2 tsp. hot sauce Dash of soy sauce Ice 12 oz. light Mexican beer, such as Modelo or Tecate

INGREDIENTS

1 oz. dark rum 1 oz. light rum 1 oz. banana liqueur 1 oz. blackberry liqueur 1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice 1/2 oz. lime juice Splash of grenadine Pineapple wedge, for garnish Blackberries, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

1. Add 4 to 5 cubes of ice to a shaker then pour in rums, liqueurs, pineapple juice, lime juice, and grenadine. 2. Shake until chilled through then strain into a glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with pineapple and blackberries and serve.

1. On a shallow plate, stir to combine salt and chili powder. Wet rim of large serving glass with lime wedge and dip into chili salt to coat rim. 2. Sadness is a symptom we’re all familiar with, but depression symptoms aren’t limited to the mind. In older people, depression tends to manifest itself more often with physical symptoms than in younger people. Common symptoms: headaches, joint pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite and gastrointestinal issues.

If you are able, caring for a pet will not only provide loving companionship at home but will afford you the chance to meet other people who adore their own furry family members. 4. 2 c. quick-cooking white rice 1 3/4 c. low-sodium chicken broth or water 2 tsp. chili powder Kosher salt 4 (6-oz.) skinless, boneless chicken breasts Freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 (15-oz.) can black beans 2 small red or orange bell peppers, stemmed, seeded, and thinly sliced 1 1/2 c. fresh or frozen corn 1 1/2 c. mild or medium salsa 1 c. shredded Mexican cheese 2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro 1 lime, cut into wedges

DIRECTIONS

1. Prepare a grill for medium-high heat; preheat 5 minutes. In a medium bowl, combine rice, broth, chili powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Let sit at least 5 minutes or up to 15, until liquid is mostly absorbed. 2. Season chicken with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Arrange 4 (16”-by-12”) pieces of foil on a work surface. Pull up sides to form into a shallow boat. Drizzle centers with oil. Divide rice mixture and any residual liquid among foil packets (about a heaping 1/2 cup each). Sprinkle beans, bell pepper, and corn over. Nestle 1 chicken breast into each foil packet and top with salsa and cheese. Tightly fold foil packets to seal. 3. Grill, covered and rotating packets halfway through, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part of chicken registers 165º, 15 to 18 minutes. 4. Carefully open foil packets. Marriage isn’t always easy. Whether you are in a long-term marriage, or newly married later in life, many couples struggle with communication or get distracted by stress, social media or busy days. Even if a couple has a strong foundation of love and respect, repairing conflict can feel difficult. It’s helpful to recognize danger signs that might indicate when a couple is becoming distant, and even better to have accessible tools for how to fix this when it happens. Here are a few signs your relationship needs attention:

1. Sleeping in separate bedrooms

When couples have given up on one another, one partner often moves to a different bedroom. Sometimes this looks innocuous — a partner attributes moving to snoring or restless leg syndrome. Once people get used to sleeping apart, it’s harder to come back together. Sexual contact becomes scarcer and the connection inevitably starts to fade.

What to do: Get back in the same bedroom. If you loathe each other too much to share a bedroom, then it’s time for a therapist. Our bodies crave contact as we sleep to solidify our partner bond. If you really must sleep separately for medical reasons, then at least do daily cuddle dates in one person’s bed.

Lady Gaga portrays Patrizia, a young woman who works with her father at his trucking firm, right when she meets Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) at a party. Maurizio is a law student, but his father, Rodolfo, owns 50% interest in the Gucci fashion house, which Maurizio will inevitably inherit. Patrizia and Maurizio hit it off easily, albeit with some of the romance preplanned by Patrizia, and she pushes him to obtain full ownership of his fashion house. If you run out of bleach, add 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to a small load of white laundry. Got lots of fresh herbs from your summer garden? Hang bunches upside down in a cool place for a week or so. Crumble the leaves into small jars. You’ve made your own dried herbs. Want super-crunchy fries at home? Soak potato pieces in very cold water for an hour dry and fry. Drain fries well, dust LIGHTLY with flour and quick-fry one more time for only a minute or so. Be certain to use only distilled water in your iron. The water from the tap can leave mineral stains on clothing, and will kill your iron if you do it all the time. For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a halfcup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water. To remove paint or stain from hands (even oilbased), use an old dry washcloth with liquid hand soap — no water. After the paint is loose, rinse with warm water. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

THE SECOND HALF OF OUR LIVES

Sometimes the results of research and studies are suspect if we don’t trust the sources, but AARP and National Geographic recently published a joint study on the realities of the second half of life, and it doesn’t get any better than that. Their study covered the big topics as we age. Here are some highlights: We care most about our brain health, our independence

and our relationships, in that order, as we move into our 70s. By the time we reach our 80s, it’s relationships that spike to the top of our list of concerns. Guess what plunges by the time we reach our 70s? Work, and it’s no surprise. We’ve been there and done that, and the idea of climbing the ladder of success at work no longer appeals to us. Health is a curious category, but it makes sense once you think about it. It seems that those who are the healthiest are the ones who are most concerned about their health, likely because they’d like to stay that way and remain active. But age plays a part in that: We’re most concerned about health in our 60s, much less concerned in our 70s, and very concerned again in our 80s, mostly about stamina, strength and flexibility. There’s something to be said for picking a form of exercise and sticking with it, especially if it helps with those three concerns. At the end of the day, the older we get, the more we care about meaningful relationships. As AARP noted, “Friends, family and community are the hallmarks of finding happiness.”
