Campus Bike Initiative Background

Transportation to and from UC Berkeley accounts for ~10% of campus greenhouse gas emissions. Travel surveys show that over 50% of staff/faculty/visitors drive to campus. There is much potential to achieve a transportation mode shift at UC Berkeley by promoting commute alternatives. Increased ridership will measurably reduce the campus community’s carbon footprint both at the university and in our neighboring communities. The Campus Bicycle Initiative is working to increase bicycling rates through:

I. Education and outreach workshops II. Bicycle traffic safety classes led by the East Bay Bike Coalition III. Encouraging new riders to commute to campus on Campus Bike Day, Bike to Work Day and as part of Team Bike Challenge.

Promoting, Supporting and Celebrating

Campus demand for bicycle support services is overwhelming! On Campus Bike Day, students descended upon Lower Sproul Plaza for free bike tune-ups, donated by mechanics from BicyCal and local bike shops Missing Link, Mike’s Bikes and R.E.I. They stayed to jam – and pedal – along with live music bumping from Rock the Bike’s unique pedal powered stage.
