Last year, I reported that Green Vale was thriving in a number of key areas, including faculty excellence, enrollment, and fundraising. This momentum has only continued to grow and, because of you, we kick off this year’s centennial milestone from a position of great strength.

Special Gift

Thanks to parents Courtney & Andrew Geisel and Bliss & Baldwin Smith, The Paul and Maxine Frohring Foundation made a $50,000 gift to outfit the Innovation Lab and enhance STEM-related programs at Green Vale, thereby inspiring students and providing them with the technical aptitude to excel in their secondary education. A comprehensive lab will now include discovery, engineering and electronics, and design and fabrication areas for students to fully engage in the design process.

Under the leadership of long-tenured faculty member and PhD candidate Harvey Bass, the Innovation Lab houses the robotics, 3D and laser printing/cutting programs, as well as tools and resources for students to design and build a variety of projects related to other academic classes. As such, it supports all major disciplines on campus, including math, science, history, literature, and the arts.

The 2022 Closing Exercises opened with a procession of faculty and administrative staff, followed by a procession of graduates. According to tradition, the graduating class selected a student speaker and a faculty speaker: Taylor Price ’22 and Upper School English teacher Rachel Stewart.

Price explained that her attempts to speak about the class’ bright futures kept getting distracted by wonderful memories from their past at Green Vale. Regarding the GVS teachers, she said: “I once read that, if a student is lucky, they will have at least one teacher leave a lasting impression on them…From Nursery to Upper school, so many teachers have dedicated themselves to not only educating us with basic knowledge, but also, guiding us towards a better understanding of ourselves.”

Stewart’s remarks focused powerfully on empathy developed by the graduating class. “When I look out at you, 8th graders, I think to myself how much more brave you must be than I ever was at your age,” she said. “But even if you don’t agree with my admittedly harsh worldview at this moment, I hope you can agree with this: no matter what, no matter who, we must always be prepared to care. What I’m referring to, of course, is a preparedness for a kind of “feeling with”— it’s empathy…You already know how to do this. You probably don’t even think about it. It’s that undercurrent in every interaction you have here with your peers and teachers.”

In keeping with a remarkable tradition, each graduate’s faculty advisor gave personalized remarks about each student as the diplomas were presented. Head of School Jesse Dougherty gave a closing address inspired by the poetry of Mary Oliver and presented the awards. Congratulations and welcome to our newest alumni!
