Since its inception over forty years ago, The Group, Inc. has prided itself on keeping up with, in fact staying ahead of, changing times. In 2017, much of that adaptation comes in response to the growing role of technology in our everyday lives. “We’re living through a massive evolution of communication… and we’re seeing a massive shift to digital platform [advertising],” says Chief Technology Officer Brandon Wells. Last summer, the New York Times reported that the average person spends nearly an hour each day on Facebook platforms. That’s more time devoted to social media than to reading, exercising, or hanging out with friends in real time. “If you go into a coffee shop or walk down the street, people are immersed in these mobile devices,” says Wells. “In today’s world, if I am buying advertising at a bus stop, most people don’t see that ad because they’re looking at their phone.” Given our collective obsession with our devices, it comes as no surprise that companies worldwide are expected to spend $35.98-billion to advertise on social networks this year. That’s more than triple money invested in social network advertising in 2013. In line with this trend, The Group began experimenting with digital advertising last year and has been deploying the ads at a brokerage level for about six months.
“We are changing the landscape of how we’re handling property marketing in an industry where most people are doing the same old stuff. Most people are putting a sign in the yard, doing print advertising, mailing post cards, sending out flyers. [They have] little to no knowledge about how that advertising spin is performing. We are really pushing forward with our Facebook advertisement and other digital advertising platforms, getting our ads in front of the right people,” says Wells.
Why is Digital Advertising Useful in Real Estate? For a company like The Group, that prides itself on being the type of business that brings clients back year after year, it’s essential to show innovation and efficiency in marketing. “We look for the greatest return on investment,” says Wells. That means putting advertisements in the places where people look — their social media. “If you’re gonna be relevant, you’ve gotta go where people are. Direct property marketing efforts put a seller’s property “in front of the audience most likely to be interested in it,” says Wells. “We’re bombarded by more content than we ever have been. What if now, instead of stuff you don’t care about, suddenly you’re seeing ads for things you’re interested in?” Digital advertising lets realtors target content to particular audiences, marketing golf course adjacent homes to avid golfers and those within walking distance of trailheads to regular hikers. Digital advertising strategies also play into the company’s more general branding needs. Because many real estate companies stick with old school advertising techniques, Wells expects The Group’s innovation stands out. For potential clients moving into the Northern Colorado market, that early creation of brand recognition and marketing is key. People new to the area “might not know who The Group is, but after driving around neighborhoods, seeing our signs, and then seeing our digital advertising, thegroupinc.com
they may want to give us a try. We’re getting in front of them,” he says. So far, digital advertising seems to be paying off. In 2016, the company’s six most successful Facebook marketing ads drove more traffic back to its website than both Trulia and realtor.com. That engagement tells Wells that The Group is delivering the content customers want — accurate, hyper local information about available homes. And that’s not just good for buyers. It benefits sellers, too. “If you’re selling your home and expecting to get top dollar, you want the most efficient marketing package for the way we are communicating in the world today,” Wells says. As effective as digital marketing is right now, the 21st century’s rate of technological change will require The Group to continue thinking ahead and beyond. “The world is changing rapidly, and we continue to explore the most effective marketing opportunities for the customers we serve.

Wandering through Roughing It In Style’s sprawling south Fort Collins showroom, it’s surprisingly easy to get lost in the details. The tempered gloss of its trademark reclaimed barn wood cabinets is eye-catching no doubt. Yet the small things — the history etched into the panels and the texture of hand forged doorknobs — are what draw the eye closer. What keeps customers loyal is the undeniable quality of the merchandise and the midwestern charm of the owners, Sue and Gerry Torgeson.

Getting into the Furniture Business In 1995, seeking better schools for their children, the husband-wife team sold their Northern Illinois farm and orchard and moved to New Glarus, Wisconsin. Two years later, they opened a rustic-themed gift shop stocked with Southwestern jewelry and moccasins, but no furniture. That soon changed. “We had this family friend that built these little benches out of reclaimed wood, so we started stocking those,” Gerry said. “Then it was end tables, and you needed to sell coffee tables to go with them, and if you’re selling all that you should be selling sofas. So, we contracted with a Wisconsin company that sold quality furniture, remodeled the upstairs and put furniture up there. One thing led to another and after about three years, we found ourselves in the full blown furniture business.”
Heading West As Roughing It In Style’s customer base grew, Sue and Gerry upgraded to a 15,000 square foot building in Madison and added a second store, run by their son and daughter-in-law, in Wisconsin’s Lake Country. “We worked up there with Erik and Sam for a couple of years, and we were getting people from Colorado with lake homes, or who were visiting, and they said, ‘We need a store like this,’” Gerry said. Seeds of interest planted, the Torgesons and partner Bo Palenske began to consider adding a Colorado location, but the timing wasn’t right. “We waited. We weathered the economy. And then our son got a job at Liberty [Common High School] in Fort Collins. So we came to visit Wade and help him get moved in, and started looking at the Front Range instead of the Mountains,” said Gerry. Their Lake Country visitors had been right — Colorado needed a Roughing It In Style. And Sue and Gerry decided, they needed a bit of Colorado. What’s So Great About The Product? According to Gerry, what sets Roughing It In Style apart from the other rustic wood furniture options is their preference for using wood “that would have otherwise been lost to the elements.” Coming from Wisconsin, that’s primarily meant repurposing the lumber from ubiquitous and dilapidated dairy barns. Many companies, he explains, distress new wood in an effort to mimic the look, “but we actually build out of barn wood.” The natural marks, the varied tones, even the tendency to build a single barn from “whatever trees were there” set these items apart. Now that they’re in Colorado, they’ve added beetle kill pine to the mix, as well as a few items made from repurposed vintage military skis. But the common thread remains the same. These items are still made from wood with character, wood that others tend to shy away from for furniture. But Roughing It In Style’s aesthetic isn’t appealing only because of the raw materials. their own almost a decade ago, on a farm in Phillips, Wisconsin. “It was during the recession, so there were lots of unemployed woodworkers. We started nine years ago in a 2-car garage, and now we have twenty-two employees and about 20,000 square feet under roof.” About thirty percent of the inventory in the Colorado store as well as the vast majority of custom builds — including their jawdropping cabinets — come from this factory. The Torgesons (Sue handles the buying) source the rest of their items from a roster of trusted vendors. “We like to deal with small companies, so we know the owner and they know us,” Gerry said. It’s a relationship he likes to have with his customers, as well. This is the kind of shop that won’t just deliver your purchase, they’ll take whatever is being replaced off your hands and get it where it needs to go. Most products come with a generous warranty. And Gerry doesn’t bat an eye at getting clients the raw materials for special projects.
