But What Is Net Zero? “The general market doesn’t really understand the net-zero home yet,” says The Group’s James Welch Mitchell. “Why does it have a different name besides just a home or a green home? Net-zero is a sub-culture of high-performance green homes. It is one of the highest performance green home that somebody can build.” But what does net-zero mean for the consumer? Mitchell explains that a “net-zero home produces all the energy on site that it uses on an annual basis.” This means homes are built thoughtfully to ensure energy isn’t wasted. EM Homes also use “offsets” — solar panels or an electrical vehicle plug-in in the garage — selected and installed according to the energy needs and habits of individual buyers.

EM Homes’ prices start in the low- to mid$500,000s and range up to the high-$600,000s. But the company aims to one day build energy efficient homes that are accessible to everybody. “The philosophy really is this,” says Fox. “Bringing the majority of people what they deserve. And it’s gonna take builders who are building to build again, not just to make profit.”

As the market becomes increasingly accepting of net-zero homes, Fox hopes we’ll begin to see neighborhoods brimming with them. “Dreamwise,” he says, “I’d love to integrate these into entire neighborhoods of sustainability.” And to set the scene, EM Homes will continue building with innovation, for a future most of us haven’t yet imagined. Learning from their work retrofitting older homes — a process that tends to be more costly than building efficiently from the outset — Mitchell explains that Fox and his team are “Doing it right from the beginning, so it costs less not only in money, but in materials. You have to build a home to code,” he continues. “But just building to meet code is building the worst home you can legally build. So what we’re doing is saying, why do that? You can’t get better than a net-zero home in the future.”

The Group is a company “founded and run on the concept of mastery,” says Ceri Anderson, Managing Broker/Partner. And achieving mastery, she explains, means “consistently going beyond our limits.” This drive to push oneself merges neatly with The Group’s collaborative atmosphere. Each fall, partners and staff come together to celebrate this culture of mutual support and personal growth at the annual “Beyond Your Limits Events.” Anderson coordinates the events, which run throughout September, and markets them to all Group Members. “Sometimes a Partner will have expertise like mountain bike racing or cooking, and they share their passion for these activities with others who have curiosity about them,” she says. Striving to get to know her new colleagues, she attended over half of this year’s events. It was “more about meeting with people than actually pushing limits. . . . If I get to the core of why I went, it was to get to know people I want to be around. I see so much well-rounded success in this organization I just want to be around these people,” she says. And even though she’s more excited about the people than the adventure, she did waterski for the first time in over a decade! “Always participate,” says Fields. “That’s what grows culture. That’s what makes us The Group.” So we save the month each September to lead or participate in a “Beyond Your Limits Events” activity. We get to learn more about our fellow Group members, ourselves and be part of a pretty special culture..
Flexibility required! Activity leaders love what they do and want to help others push themselves to try something new or achieve a goal they’d never imagined. Fields thrives in the role. He’s led the Horsetooth Hike several times, guided a group ascent of Longs Peak, and helped with the Mount Evans bike ride. “I love leading,” he explains, “because I love watching people grow. I love helping others and when you get up above timber-line, or hike down from Horsetooth after dark without a head lamp, you’re gonna experience things you’ve never experienced before. We’ve had as many as 72 people up there [on the moonlight Horsetooth hike] at once, and there were some people who had to face some fears to get up there. It was beyond their limits.” But leaders don’t have to be ultra-marathoners to help others push their boundaries. Some of this year’s most popular activities were the Seasonal Eating cooking class and Campfire Stories, Songs and Suds. When this year’s tubing on the Poudre River fizzled out because of conditions, the new friendships come out on top. “There was no water on the river for the tubing day,” Tooley says. “But it didn’t matter. We ended up hanging out at Picnic Rock and it was a huge relationship builder.” Every year, she says, “we have a few that we consider ‘standards’ like the sunsetmoonrise hike up to the top of Horsetooth Rock. Otherwise, we try to find things we think people might like to try.”

Wellington’s Vestige Press restores, archives and shares the history of Northern Colorado and the west. A step into Bill Schneider’s lovingly restored 1898 building on Wellington’s central thoroughfare triggers a journey through Northern Colorado’s past. Like the photos and documents inside, the former land office showcases the details of its history. Vestige Press moved into the refurbished space a decade ago, highlighting its typical western false front and original wood. Today, the company provides a number of services to the local community as well as visitors. Schneider, a long-time fan of both history and technology, joined his passions when he founded Vestige Press 20 years ago. “We’re improving the future through preserving the past,” he says of the company’s dual-pronged mission to conserve history and educate the public.
Preserving History with Technology Through Vestige Press, Schneider focuses his talents toward the mission at hand. “I really love to look for the historical significance of things, and also the details,” he says. “And by using technology, we actually learn much more quickly.” In his extensive photo restoration efforts, Schneider uses a proprietary software and unique process he developed himself. The approach “offers things you wouldn’t get from Photoshop or other standard products,” he explains. Of particular importance, the system enables both image enlargement and quality improvement. The ability to create such clear, blown-up, high-resolution images opens the door for unique uses of the photos. “If you wanna see the history of Windsor in 25 feet,” Schneider says, “we’ll create things of that nature.” The pictures, in their magnified versions, highlight details that may otherwise hide in the background. Such precise historical context draws viewers in, creating an immersive as well as educational experience. For example, individuals may notice the signs on vehicles in historic images advertise $100 price tags. The details provide more practical benefits as well. City planners and architects can use the enlarged photographs to reproduce or properly restore old buildings. Vestige Press, recognized as one of the best in the business, routinely prepares graphics for and leases exhibits to museums, national parks and other organizations. But it also offers services for personal use. “We do a tremendous amount of restoration for individuals,” Schneider observes.

Educating the Public Today, Vestige Press houses nearly 2 million original documents, over 250,000 of which are historic photographs, primarily of Northern Colorado and the American West. This considerable archive plays an important role in Schneider’s efforts to meet his goal of educating the public. The main offices have evolved into the free-to-the-public Larimer County History Museum. Vestige Press also offers tailored presentations, historical exhibits, and can assist with genealogical investigations. The museum’s location makes it accessible to residents of Larimer County as well as travelers passing through. “We’re in the perfect spot for this,” Schneider explains. “We’re the first real stop for folks coming into Colorado [from the North] and we’re right off the highway.” Visitors can peruse the historic documents and immerse themselves in photos and, increasingly video. “We try to make them entertaining as well as educational,” Schneider says of the rotating exhibits. “We have some of the earliest motion pictures in Fort Collins. And we’re currently putting together some multimedia presentations that will blow your mind.” He also partners with local schools to offer special educational material and presentations. The museum holds documents and artifacts on important historical events from Paleolithic material to the Sand Creek Massacre, and Custer’s last stand which directly effected the history of Larimer County. Vestige Press provides students with access to archival “material they would never get to see.” Schneider’s outreach efforts extend beyond the youth as he shares his vast knowledge and collection of relics with the community through his museum and publishing house. Vestige Press publishes historical books, limited edition historical photographs, photo restoration as well as custom graphic designs for all things historical from exhibits to complete histories of any subject. And in keeping with his commitment to giving back to the community, Schneider & Vestige Press donate photographs to various charitable organizations for fundraising auctions.
