The Group, Inc. began with a simple vision: to anticipate, and become, the future of real estate. Forty years later, its innovative founding concepts—such as employee ownership—are lauded throughout the business world. But, ultimately, The Group’s underlying values and philosophies sustain and allow it to continue to push boundaries. According to Kendall, “At The Group, our whole is greater than the sum of our parts. Working together as owners of our company, we are able to do things we would not be able to do on our own.” This foundation of togetherness has played out through the decades, from employee ownership to an emphasis on maximizing potential, both at work and in life. “As Realtors we daily sell the benefits of ownership. It is only fitting that we own our company and control our own destiny.” — The Group, Inc., 1976 The Group created a culture of inclusion from its earliest days, initiated with its commitment to employee ownership. The concept, unheard of forty years ago, would underpin the company culture that current partners hold so dear. “We didn’t call it abundance then, but that’s the theme. There’s enough for everybody so let’s go at it as a team,” Loner explains. “Everything was open. That was so different from what the model was back then… We all had our different hats—ownership, selling and social—as a stockholder you were part of the company and that was above and beyond your individual business, it was focused on what was best for all of us.” The resulting “Group Way” fosters an environment of mutual support and cooperation, rather than the competition that has long dominated the Real Estate industry. That connection was tested early on, when vicepresident Don Sendgraff disappeared in a plane crash. “We basically shut down the company and went looking for him—renting additional helicopters to help the Civil Air Patrol with the search,” Kendall says. “The commitment our Partners had to each other and to finding one of our own was amazing.” Today, the company’s Brokers, Managers, and staff continue to care for one another in and out of the office. Whether battling cancer, dealing with a difficult litigation or coping with the loss of a spouse, “Groupies” are there for one another. “You can share anything that’s going on with you,” explains Joey Porter, who has spent 37 of her 40year Real Estate career with The Group, Inc. “If you’ve got some sort of a health thing, you don’t have to sneak around and hide it, it’s so much

And although she’s proud to be the first staff-member offered the chance to purchase stock, it’s the personal relationships that stand out. “The first thing I can say is The Group is a family,” she says. “It’s always been a family to me, in times of good and times of bad.” That connection holds true beyond individuals’ tenure with the company. When Retiree Dave Dornan fulfilled a long-time dream of traversing the U.S. by bicycle, he shared tales and photos from his trip with his former colleagues. “When you retire from here, you’re still part of the family. We’re celebrating this 40th birthday party and many alumni are invited to come to that,” says Porter. But building a successful and sustainable business hasn’t always been easy, and The Group Partners have seen plenty of ups and downs over the years. But how does The Group get such consistent buy-in to its corporate culture? Founder and Broker Partner Susie Ewing says, “We focus on people staying in environments where they’re learning and leaving environments where they’re not learning. And we’re a learning environment. It’s not just about Real Estate. It’s about life.” To engender growth, The Group, Inc. offers regular trainings in a variety of Real Estate, investment and salesrelated subjects. And, true to the philosophy of togetherness, Nesbitt says, “Any staff person is absolutely welcome to take advantage of the education and training that is offered including Wake Up Money classes to learn about investing in Real Estate. Some of the education is offered not just to the brokers, and staff, but also to our customers.” In addition, Kendall has brought in a string of experts at pushing boundaries, including Disney’s Mike Vance, prefame Tony Robbins, and Aikido master Tom Crum. Through these mentors, the company has offered new perspectives on the world. Over the years, Groupies have sampled everything from fire-walking to board-breaking to explore the relationship between mind and matter. “We learned we could be anything we wanted, do anything we wanted, if we could figure it out and put our minds to it. It was a big shift for the company and the people. We still talk about it.” Porter recalls.

That constant drive to push limits will be carried on by the next generation of Groupies, many of whom have been recruited for their world view as much as their experience. “We have a lot of bright, beautiful young people who work here who have the dream,” says Porter. “And these are the people who will carry the ball. We’ve always been future-oriented.” One of The Group’s newer Partners, Christie Wilbur, joined the company when she graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Real Estate and Marketing. “When I started my career in real estate, I was fresh out of college and knew it would be a challenge. I was working as a personal assistant to one of the Group Realtors at the time, and saw how special the culture was at the company. Everyone was so willing to help each other out and truly wanted each person to succeed.
