When you’re basking in Northern Colorado’s 300 annual days of sunshine, it’s easy to dream about going green and saving money with a solar-powered homes. But it can be tricky to find a trusted resource to help parse all the information and wrangle the necessary tools. The Money: Rebates, Incentives, and Financing The financial side alone can be daunting. Colorado’s typical residential solar system costs between $15,000 and $25,000. But, urges James Mitchell, CEO of Renewablue and Partner at The Group Real Estate, rebates and the right financing plan can make a difference. Sure, some people can afford to pay for the improvement in cash, but many will need, or want, some help. “Most people who pull the trigger on [solar] have an average priced home,” he says. The solar federal tax credit is one of the rebates to jump on, and most working taxpayers will be eligible. The 30% credit is good through 2019, then decreases to 26% through 2021, when it will fall again to 22%. “So, there is a small sense of urgency. Really, two years and a quarter isn’t a ton of time for a lot of people to gear up for this kind of investment,” says Mitchell.

It’s also worth investigating smaller-scale, local incentives. For example, individuals who use Fort Collins Electric can look into the $1,500 rebate the utility company is offering. Smart financing is another way solar dreamers can make system purchase and installation affordable. In today’s booming real estate market, many homeowners have built up considerable equity in as little as five or 10 years. Mitchell and his team at Renewablue can help those homeowners explore home equity lines of credit, cash-out refinances, or refinancing for energy efficient mortgages or renovation loans. Another option is the Home Efficiency Loan Program, or HELP, a $20,000 offer that is facilitated through Elevations Credit Union and can be used for energy efficiency improvements. Finally, Colorado’s energy office recently created a $35,000, 2.75% loan called RENU. Similar to the HELP loan and also facilitated by Elevations Credit Union, RENU has already been rolled out in western Colorado and is gradually making its way east.

So, to help answer homeowner questions about solar, Mitchell has organized an ongoing series of seminars. “We’ll bring awareness to the process of bringing solar to your home. We’ll provide information on financing, rebates and incentives, and connect folks with solar providers … And then, at the very end, we’ll talk about buying and selling homes with solar panels,” he says. Mitchell’s inspiration for the solar seminar series came from his experience with clients who knew they liked the idea of going solar, but just didn’t know where to begin. “When somebody says, ‘I want solar,’ we start a process. It’s an energy audit which gets them rebates and incentives … So it really tees up an energy efficiency and renewable energy combo,” he says. The energy audit helps clients assess whether they’re conserving as much energy as possible and offers a sense of how suitable their home is for solar — for example, a 15-year-old roof should probably be replaced before pricey solar panels are installed. Mitchell and his team at Renewablue can help navigate any necessary preparation of the home, and their guidance ensures homeowners receive the maximum rebates for which they are eligible. “I want people to know this is the right place to come and get information if you feel like it. We want people to know what their goals are, to set an expectation in that moment, and to set them up for success,” says Mitchell. HOW TO ATTEND The next two seminars will be held on Tuesday evenings, November 14 and December 5, from 5:30 to 7:00, in the basement of The Group, Inc.’s Harmony office. Eight more are tentatively planned for winter, spring and fall of 2018. The seminars are free of charge and hungry attendees needn’t worry. There will be a taco truck on premises.
