THE GROUP’S MARKETING TEAM It’s Monday morning and The Group’s Marketing Team has huddled to talk about last week’s activities including the company’s presence at the Corn Roast Festival in Loveland and the Group’s sponsorship at the CSU stadium in Fort Collins. This week the company’s monthly publication, The Real Estate Source, goes to press and a draft of the newsletter, The Insider, needs to be ready for the weekly sales meeting. There are four new Realtors who will be coming in to order business cards and set up their personal websites. New collateral material needs to be designed for a builder account. The second quarterly market update the team created needs to be finally proofed, and it is time to begin thinking about the company’s United Way campaign coming up in October and the Group’s annual retreat that takes place in December. Helen Gray, Marketing Director, heads up the creative department for northern Colorado’s leading Real Estate Company. When she moved to Fort Collins in 1975, she was a recent college graduate with a degree in Office Administration. From the time she joined The Group, Inc. in 1980, she flourished and helped the company do the same. She oversees the small but essential marketing staff that helps keep The Group Realtors and brand at the forefront of the Industry.

Who is The Group Marketing Team? The Group, Inc.’s marketing department consists of four women with complementary creative talents. “We each have an area of responsibility, but the entire team usually has some part in every project. We have better ideas when we all work together and it makes the busy days more fun. I am responsible for the department and I handle community outreach and events.” Anne Vetter, the organization’s graphic designer, focuses on The Group’s outward facing image, especially at the corporate level. She ensures formatting and visual aspects of documents from the annual report to the annual forecast to make them interesting and palatable to the general public. She has been working with The Group in some capacity since the beginning of her career, when she designed their logo in the early 1990s. She came onboard as a staff member in January 2013. “My design career has come full circle with The Group,” she says. Amy Hoback, the department’s Jill of all trades, came to The Group in 2001 from a serendipitous connection at a magazine job. She handles the company website and individual Realtor sites, and is constantly pushing the intersections of marketing and technologies. Though she fell into her field by happy accident, she was drawn to The Group as a company because of its culture — the very culture she now helps promote and maintain. “I feel like I’ve grown up at The Group,” she says. “Before I started, I wasn’t married. I didn’t have kids. [Now] I’m married. I have two kids… Working at The Group has been a huge part of my life.”

Ericka Allen is the newest addition to The Group’s marketing department. She came to the company three years ago and joined marketing in May and handles the direct mail and listing advertisements. “I’m in charge of our real estate publication, The Source, and the coordination of our weekly advertising. I help create informational pieces for our Realtors to mail to their customers. I enjoy the process of working together on different projects.”
Going Above and Beyond The marketing department is just one more way that The Group stands apart from the average real estate company. By assisting Realtors and their support staff by overseeing messaging, coordinating events, and helping build and share a consistent and appealing brand at the corporate level, Gray and her team free them up to focus on clients. “Our job is to help the Realtors. We get their names out there. We get the brand out there… so people know what we stand for. We’re different. We’re local. We want to take care of the customers,” says Allen. REAL ESTATE INSIDER From The Group, Inc.’s earliest days in 1976, founder Larry Kendall wanted a way to help clients stay up-to-date on the latest and most relevant real estate related news. Inspired by the economics-driven Kiplinger Letter, Kendall began pulling together bite-sized national and regional news summaries that would give readers the kind of inside information he would use to make company decisions. “The purpose was three-fold,” says The Group Marketing Director Helen Gray, who has worked with the company since 1980. “We wanted people to feel good about Northern Colorado as a place to live. And we want them to feel good about investing in real estate in Northern Colorado, want them to know it’s a good investment. And third, we want them to think of The Group as a source of information.” The Real Estate Insider was born. More than 40 years since Kendall and his co-founders mailed out that first newsletter, the monthly mailing still fulfills those three original goals. But the product has evolved. It’s still a place to find intentionally curated stories, but these days all the reporting is original. “It’s a team operation. The Group seeks out people who really know the community, they seek out experts, people who can really help articulate their message,” says Mishelle Baun of Baun Business Communications. The entire document, which typically runs about four pages, is produced in-house. And it’s a collaborative process from start to finish. An editorial board consisting of Gray, Mishelle Baun and her husband Bob, and The Group’s Susie Ewing, Brandon Wells, and Tom Flanagan start the process each month with a conversation “about what’s going on in the market and try to come up with things that are interesting and timely,” says Gray. Content discussions are based on ideas generated by Group Realtors, community and market research, and occasionally, are follow-ups to questions asked by clients. Once topics are sussed out, the Bauns, both of whom have journalism backgrounds, do what they do best — research and writing. “We have this process we go through,” Mishelle says.
“I will go to planning and zoning departments to see data, what kind of permits are being pulled. So we have this sense of what is going on… The Group [has been] around for 40 years. That means we have the depth of knowledge to say not just happening, but why. We see a story or hear a topic… What does that mean for rent? For real estate in general in Northern Colorado? My job in general is really to flush out the meaning. Why is it important?” The monthly content varies, including trends in the marketplace, “real estate by the numbers,” stories highlighting The Group’s extensive community involvement, and segments about the latest local happenings. “We want it to be a mailer that goes out and really adds value,” says Managing Broker Partner Susie Ewing. “We want people to read it and talk about it. We push out info that people are wanting to know and pay attention to.” Once the articles are approved, The Group, Inc.’s graphic designer Anne Vetter handles layout and formatting before proofs are sent to the local printer and mailed to Realtors’ clients. The Real Estate Insider is sent to about 35,000 to 40,000 individuals each month. Like the stories contained within, the decision to distribute the newsletter in paper form is a highly intentional one. Not only is the sometimes numbers-heavy content easier on the eyes in print form, in an era of bottomless email inboxes, the chance to read a hard copy or pass it around can feel downright luxurious. However, electronic archives are available online for those who really can’t abide by the paper trail. But what really makes The Real Estate Insider special, all of its co-creators agree, is that each and every month the team works diligently to provide readers with information and insights they’re just not going to find elsewhere. “Our goal from the beginning is always to send out value-added information, and I don’t see that changing,” says Ewing.
