ge sa es m homes have the lowest share of the market on record and apartments the highest. For many merchants the single homes market has been a significant share of their business while the apartment business is negligible. At the same time rejuvenating empty homes continues to present a huge opportunity to the sector - there are currently 6,300 applications in progress - potentially there is at least another 15,000 and that is before we start counting those “above the shop”. HAI will continue to push to remove any blockages and to have attractive incentives in place. Another major challenge to the sector is the cost of doing business. HAI is actively campaigning on this subject. Our Spring training programme is well underway - as well as our list of ever popular training courses. We have added courses on Procurement, AI, and Chat GPT. The Hardware Education Hub is powering ahead with several merchants, most recently Chadwick’s amongst others, having signed up to roll out the product knowledge content to their employees. This presents a unique opportunity for suppliers and manufacturers to promote their products to thousands of salespeople on the shop floor. Those interested in participating please contact Aoife, aoife@hardwareassociation.ie. The third year of the highly successful Certificate in Hardware Retail and Merchanting sponsored by Octabuild will conclude in May. At the end of last year both Gerry Fallon and Pat Moore left the board of HAI. I would like to thank both of them for their dedication and service. We welcome Tara Brennan to the board and wish her all the best. That leaves a position vacant for a merchant board member. Board members of HAI get to contribute and shape the direction of the organisation while networking and learning from other professionals in the sector. We need a high calibre individual to become part of this team - nominations and elections will take place soon.

As we go to press preparations for The Hardware Show 2024 (Feb 18th-19th) are in full swing. We expect it to be the biggest and most successful on record. Bookings for visitors are well ahead of 2022 and we have a waiting list of potential exhibitors. Many thanks are due to our headline sponsor Intact and the other sponsors Blaklader and Hultafors for making it happen. In January we hosted the first round of the Innovation Awards, sponsored by Ahern Ireland. We were completely oversubscribed with so many new and innovative products and solutions. The Dragon’s Den element of the Innovation Awards is always highly competitive - as each participating company wants to win. As a sector everyone is excited about meeting customers and suppliers and looking for new products and ideas. Our exhibitors are offering compelling deals on the days of the show and many are also offering prizes and competitions to attendees. Entry tickets are free as is car parking and tea/coffee. The President’s Ball on the night of the 18th is also filling up - so if you are planning to go, please book now. HAI have partnered with Focus Ireland for donations at the ball. While we await the final year figures the latest Business Index for quarter three 2023 shows a flat market with zero growth in that quarter compared to the previous year. Overall, the market grew in value by 2% for the first nine months. Inflation in the same period for the sector is 2.7% - so it looks very much like we are flatlining. The increased costs of materials and labour, the cost of living, the shortage of tradespeople, and complications in planning are having a negative impact. As well as this the car market was up by 15% in volume in 2023 - so we have more competition than we had over the last few years. The Irish consumer retains a huge savings bank. Also according to Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) loans for home improvements were up by 27% in volume and 22% in value compared to Q2 2022. They were valued at €172million for the quarter - the highest since Q1 2020. However, in value terms we were overtaken by the car sector – valued at €189m and with a growth of 48%. On the shortage of tradespeople - in this issue Ted Laverty from www.onlinetradesmen.ie gives an insight into the trade sector and a possible way to improve our businesses through partnerships. Just released, the figure for housing completions in 2023 is 32,695 - a 10% increase on 2022 and the highest since 2008. There is still much catching up to do - we still have a backlog of 95,000 units - roughly 89,000 due to the recession and 6,000 due to Covid. Any increase in housing is very welcome. However, in 2023 apartments accounted for 36% of what was built, and single homes accounted for 17%. Single

Lastly, the team and I at HAI are looking forward to meeting you at The Hardware Show.

landscapers, farmers, DIY’ers etc. The inclusion of additive pumps means retarders can be added to mortars prolonging their workability for up to three days.

fibo Collect is an automated batching plant, with self-cleaning technology that allows customers to order small to large quantities of concrete, mortar or screed. With orders from as little as 0.25m3. Since its UK debut in Jan 2023 the technology has been embraced by Builders merchants there.

What are the benefits? fibo Ireland will offer these machines with a local territory agreement meaning that the vendor can create a new USP in their locality, whilst generating a healthy profit.

How does it work? Customers can choose from up to 60 customisable recipes and select the exact volume needed. Customers can either pay at the counter of the builders merchant by collecting a barcode or at the terminal via a card or RFID tag. With the single push of a button, material is carefully pan mixed and dispensed from a conveyor belt onto the back of a pickup truck or into a tub. Who uses it? SAVING TIME WITH MEDITE MR PLUS When it comes to choosing the right materials for an interior fit-out, there are generally two main factors to consider; time, and how much preparation the materials need before creating the furnishings, shelving or decorative features. This is especially the case if wood-based products are being considered. This is where MEDITE SMARTPLY comes in. MEDITE SMARTPLY has an extensive range of MDF products that offer standard, speciality and technical variants to meet a multitude of specifications. This includes MEDITE MR PLUS, which, after exceptional feedback and success in European markets, is now available to customers in Ireland and the UK. PAINTING A BRIGHTER FUTURE Striving for decarbonisation is an ambition that we all share, and one that every business in Ireland must play its part in tackling, as Philip Cefai, Managing Director of Crown Paints explains.

Crown Trade Extramatt is also low VOC, limiting exposure to airborne triggers of asthma and allergies, and both products benefit from Crown’s leading breatheasy® formulation.

“The Irish Government has put the country on a path towards net zero carbon, with legally binding pledges to reduce emissions by 51% by 2030 and hit net zero by 2050.

But there is a lot more to do, and we’re going to have to continue to adapt and innovate as we work to maintain momentum and keep delivering the progress we have promised.

Achieving these goals is going to mean we all must make changes, and that’s something we’re taking very seriously at Crown Paints.

That includes becoming a carbon neutral, zero waste to landfill business by 2026.

As one of Ireland’s biggest suppliers of paint to DIYers, tradespeople and the construction industry alike, we’re in a strong position to help support our customers’ efforts, as well as our own, to reduce impact on the environment by ensuring that our processes are as sustainable as they can be. That’s why we have launched Project Possible, unifying all of our environmental sustainability activities under one single initiative that we can all get behind and support. Continuous improvement We’ve already made good progress in our efforts to be a greener business. For example, we now only use 100% certifiable renewable energy for our business operations. We were also one of the first paint manufacturer to use 100% recycled packaging. As well as this, we’re leading the way when it comes to expanding the number of products that meet environmental regulatory criteria including BREEAM and LEED. This includes new Clean Extreme Clean Air Scrubbable Matt, which features innovative air purifying technology that improves indoor air quality by removing up to 45% of the formaldehyde present from the air. It was recently awarded Best Interior Product at the Architecture & Building Expo in Dublin.

Supporting global change Just as the climate crisis isn’t a challenge that can be tackled by any single business or government, it also demands action worldwide, and not just in a single country. As part of the Hempel Group, global coatings company wholly owned by The Hempel Foundation, working for good is in Crown’s DNA. A portion of Crown profits go towards supporting the philanthropic work that the Hempel Foundation does to protect biodiversity, empower children to learn and make the paint industry more sustainable, and in 2022 alone, the Foundation made donations of over €21 million. Becoming a sustainable business is not a box-ticking exercise. Cutting carbon and reducing waste means making real change right across our operations and supply chain, and that’s what we’re committed to doing. It’s our passion and has been a core part of our purpose for many years. We’re holding ourselves to account, setting ambitious targets and being totally transparent with regular updates on our progress. And we’re sharing our ambitions and achievements with our customers and colleagues so everyone can come on this journey with us. I’m so proud of the positive difference we are already making, and I can promise that we will continue to be a force for change.” You can learn more about our Project Possible initiative at: www.crownpaints.com

TAKE A HARD LINE ON HARDWARE CHARGEBACKS You’ve helped your customers make the most of their homes. Now Elavon would like to help you make the most of your payments systems.

(this also goes for CNP transactions – although these may only be fully secured with 3-D Secure). But always ask for receipts and proof that goods were indeed damaged.

Whether you trade online, in-store, by mail or telephone order or a combination of these, the problem of chargebacks can eat into your working day and the funds in your bank account.

How can I prevent Card-Not-Present (CNP) chargebacks? • 3-D Secure 2.0: for online payments, the latest 3-D Secure transaction authentication means more secure transactions and better protection from fraud chargebacks.

What’s a chargeback? A chargeback is a charge that’s returned to a debit or credit card after a customer successfully disputes an item on their account statement. They might dispute a charge for any number of reasons: •

They’ve been charged for items they didn’t receive;

They’ve been charged mistakenly because of a technical issue;

Product returns, defective items or maybe a reservation or service has been cancelled;

You might have accidentally duplicated a charge; or

Their card information has been compromised and they’ve been hit with a fraudulent charge.

Dealing with a disputed charge can be tedious and testing. It takes time to trace a payment in your reporting systems, while also trying to assuage your customer – who might no longer have their proof of purchase. You’ll typically be charged a fee from the card issuer when a chargeback happens. Chargebacks are more common in card-not-present (CNP) transactions, but some general rules apply to both CNP and in-store sales. How can I prevent in-store chargebacks? • Know your customers: keeping transaction records can help you identify high-risk transactions. The more you know about your customers, the more likely you are to spot transactions that don’t match their risk profiles.

24

Get familiar with technology: with so many ways to pay, check that customers making contactless or digital payments use the technology correctly and whether sales go through on their first attempt.

Returns and refunds: display policies clearly in-store and state them again at the point of sale.

Customer service: encourage customers to resolve disputes by phone, rather than through the chargeback process, by including your contact details on receipts

Content is king: describe your products clearly on your website, so customers won’t have reason to return them. The same for return/refund policies and delivery: state when they can expect their items, the cost of delivery and how they can track purchases.

Trading name: make sure your business’ trading name matches what appears on customers’ bank statements.

CVV2/CVC2 security: use these codes on credit and debit cards as an additional security check.

Avoid CNP transactions: instead, send a payment link generated by your payments provider to the customer by text or email for a safe, speedy sale.

Human touch Don’t forget the personal touch can go a long way when dealing with chargebacks. Well-trained staff, armed with the knowledge and tools to sort disputes, can keep customers coming back. The right approach, combined with fraud-prevention tools and strategies, can help keep your payments process as safe as houses. Want more help with preventing chargebacks – or any other aspect of payments processing? Get in touch with Peter Cooke, Enterprise Sales Manager, Retail, Elavon Merchant Services, peter.cooke@elavon.com.

GALWAY CITY COUNCIL’S SPOT CHECKS TO STAMP OUT SMOKY COAL Retailers of solid fuels in Galway City are being chosen at random for inspections to ensure they are not selling smoky coal. Community Wardens in Galway City Council have been instructed to carry out routine inspections on solid fuel retailers between October and March, the heating season. It’s understood at least five inspections are being carried out every month. These include service stations, supermarkets, corner shops and hardware stores that sell wood and coal for burning. In addition to inspections, the Environment Section at City Hall has compiled a list of all solid fuel retailers and has written to them, reminding them of their obligations under solid fuel regulations. In 2012, Galway City and parts of the county were designated as ‘smoke-free zones’ under the Air Pollution Act. This legislation banned the burning, sale, marketing, or distribution of bituminous coal in that zone. It was only permissible to burn, sell or distribute smokeless coal within the city boundary. January/February 2024

Wardens can issue on-the-spot fines for breaches of the Act and the local authority can take prosecutions through the courts. The Council confirmed to the Connacht Tribune that its Environment Department had taken five samples of coal from local retailers for testing. These samples have been sent to Arigna Fuels to be tested for various parameters, including sulphur content, to ensure they are in accordance with Air Pollution Act levels. The Council spokesperson said the results had not yet been returned. The five monthly inspections were separate to the sampling and testing of the solid fuels that are carried out at Arigna Fuels. In her report to city councillors, Chief Executive Patricia Philbin said the City Council’s Environment Section had launched a ‘clear the air in three easy steps’ on its social media. https://connachttribune.ie/galway-city-councils-spotchecks-to-stamp-out-smoky-coal/

BUILDING THE FUTURE: TRENDS, DIGITISATION & PROCESSES IN 2024 Recent decades have seen rapid technological change. Digitalisation, automation, and other technological advances have been identified as major trends changing business and are transforming industries globally. The use of digital technologies has enabled companies to sell more and to reshape the business by optimising resources, increasing staff productivity, working more efficiently, and optimising supply chains. This aids in reducing costs and increasing profits and provides businesses with greater flexibility and reactivity. This contributes to an increase in customer loyalty and satisfaction, offering a better all-round customer experience. As we enter 2024, James Mitchell, Managing Director UK & Ireland at Kerridge Commercial Systems (KCS), has identified the ERP trends he anticipates being key for the merchant industry in 2024. Efficient inventory management The triple supply shocks of Brexit, Covid and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have begun to fade easing the restrictions on supply and reducing the costs of inventory. While this is positive news for the industry, it does bring potential challenges for merchants who have purchased items at increased costs during times of higher rates of inflation and when supply was restricted. “Keeping a tight rein on your stock is essential, with a strong ERP system, such as K8, a business’s entire stock is opened up to assessment and analysis. It’s simple to rebalance supply and demand, purchasing and sales, movements, and replenishments, allowing business to significantly improve their ability to respond to changes within the market. Prices can be electronically uploaded from suppliers to ensure they’re always up-to-date, customer prices are based on purchase prices to ensure you retain a profitable business. Being able to gain full visibility and track stock movements, transfers, and availability in an instant allows you to take any corrective action if required. You can even source stock at the quotation stage to ensure it will be available for your important contracts.” explains James. Cloud and security Businesses are becoming more and more vulnerable to the threat of increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks than ever before as cyber criminals harness the power of AI. Attacks can lead to complete loss of systems and data, exposure to hackers, and poor performance. Data security should never be overlooked, selecting a reputable ERP provider will ensure that best practices are followed with regards to data authentication, access control and encryption.

If you aren’t already using cloud software, then it’s time to mitigate these risks and make the switch. Running your business solution on the premises means your hardware and the operating systems used to run it could be outdated and be at risk of failure - especially if you haven’t upgraded in the last few years. “At KCS, all our solutions are available as SaaS in the cloud,” says James. “This offers you enhanced data protection and real flexibility in how you work. Additionally, we run our cloud system called K-Cloud. Fully certified for security and quality, you can increase capacity without a large investment and smoothly scale your business as required.” Advancements in ERP intelligence As ERP solutions continue to evolve, they’re incorporating technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and robotic process automation (RPA). Once fully integrated, the ERP system performs tasks for the merchant that once required manual operation, “for example, in K8, merchants can increase forecasting accuracy by analysing sales history and building in seasonable variables, safety stock and planned growth, avoiding overstocking or running out of stock. This development saves costs while freeing up time for employees to focus on the business areas that generate more revenue.” explains James. Maximising opportunity in times of low economic growth The business sectors that KCS operate in are resilient and they constantly seek new and innovative ways in which to serve customers and ensure a positive business model. As a key provider of software and business solutions to industry, KCS understand that ERP software is the driving force behind their customers business. Here are just a few ways K8 and digitising your businesses can help maximise opportunities and keep your business on track in 2024: “Most ERP providers can – and should – keep up a continual level of investment in new features. Product development and ongoing investment help you thrive in today’s challenging marketplace. But the same also applies to your organisation. From your ERP software to your web presence, finance and accounting, optimising your systems and processes through digitalisation strengthens your business model and improves customer service. By giving your staff the digital tools to stay ahead of your competitors, you can use the latest technology to streamline tasks and gain greater efficiencies in 2024.” For more information see www.kerridgecs.com and call +44(0) 1488662000 January/February 2024

Highest Corporate Insolvency levels since 2018 recorded in 2023 663 corporate insolvencies have been recorded in Ireland in 2023, according to the latest Insolvency & Restructuring Statistics compiled and published by Deloitte Ireland. This represents an increase of 25% from the total number of 530 insolvencies recorded in 2022. There have been 33 SCARP (Small Company Administrative Rescue Process) appointments in 2023. 78% of these have been James Anderson, Turnaround & Restructuring Partner at successful, saving circa 211 jobs. Deloitte Ireland. Of the 33 SCARP appointments, five were unsuccessful resulting in liquidation and 70 job losses and 10 SCARPs are ongoing which impacts 178 jobs. Since its introduction in 2021, there have been a total of 55 SCARP appointments with 35 being successful reflecting a success rate of 76% and resulting in almost 600 jobs being saved. Commenting on the latest statistics, James Anderson, Turnaround & Restructuring Partner at Deloitte Ireland said: “This year’s statistics show a return to pre-pandemic insolvency activity levels with cautious consumer sentiment, cost inflation and higher interest rates starting to impact many businesses. Given the high rate of successful outcomes to date, it is evident that SCARP is an effective process which provides SMEs with a timely and cost-effective opportunity to restructure. “Awareness of the SCARP process (and its benefits) is still not yet widely considered by advisors and business owners/ directors but hopefully that will change with time. Its genesis is to provide viable businesses with an opportunity to restructure, however, careful planning and compliance prior to considering/ commencing SCARP is fundamental. Acting early and speaking with your trusted advisors when experiencing financial difficulties on how to resolve legacy debts should be the priority of business owners and directors as this affords more time and options to address matters.” Creditors Voluntary Liquidations Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidations (CVLs) continue to account for the majority of insolvencies with 470 (71% of total) in 2023, compared to 383 (72% of total) in 2022. The total of 470 in 2023 represents a 23% increase in CVL activity in 2022. Court liquidations account for 6% of total insolvencies with 2023 activity levels increasing by 31% to a total of 38, compared with 29 appointments in 2022. 106 Corporate Receiverships were recorded in 2023 (16% of the total), an increase of 23% on 2022, when 86 appointments were recorded. Despite increasing 60% since 2022, examinership activity levels remained low in 2023 with 16 recorded (2% of total) recorded despite a success rate of over 80%. January/February 2024

Debt warehousing The latest reported Revenue statistics on warehoused debt at the end of November 2023 indicated the following: • • •

Almost €1.8 billion of warehoused debt owed by 58,152 businesses (estimated average debt of circa €31,000) 10% of businesses owe more than €50,000 €90 million of debt previously warehoused by 831 businesses was determined as uncollectable due to liquidation

The due date for payment of warehoused taxes is fast approaching and businesses have until May 1st, 2024, to either pay their warehoused debt in full, or agree a Phased Payment Arrangement (PPA). If there is no agreed PPA in place, the entire warehoused debt is due and owing on 1st May 2024. A key component of a PPA is that it will likely include a minimum down payment of up 40% of the warehoused liability, and agreement of same may impact tax clearances. Sector focus The Construction Industry recorded 89 insolvencies to date in 2023, representing just over 13% of total insolvencies. This is a notable increase of 62% when compared with 2022, when a total of 55 construction insolvencies were recorded. This is not surprising given the difficulties construction companies are facing around the increasing costs of materials. The Retail Industry recorded 59 insolvencies in 2023, representing 9% of total insolvencies, which represents a 23% increase compared with 48 in 2022. Regional focus 535 corporate insolvencies were recorded in Leinster to date in 2023, making up 81% of total insolvencies. This is a 37% increase compared to 2022, when 390 insolvencies (74% of total) were recorded in Leinster and is well above the national 25% increase. Munster and Ulster saw small decreases in insolvency activity in 2023 to date, when compared with 2022. Munster recorded 73 (11% of total) corporate insolvencies to date in 2023 down from 91 in 2022. Connacht saw 39 (6% of total) up from 31 in 2022 and Ulster had 16 (2% of total) marginally down from 18 in 2022. Insolvency activity in Northern Ireland Insolvency-related activity amongst Northern Ireland businesses is on the rise as interest rates bite. The most recent monthly Insolvency Figures from the Office of National Statistics show activity returning to pre-pandemic levels. There were 190 corporate insolvencies in the region year to date, a slight decline of 5% from the same period in 2022 (199 YTD 2022).

A View from Europe

Scanning the DIY horizon for opportunities Our colleague and friend Thierry Coeman, outlines "the raison d’être for strategic alliances". He has a closer look at one of the world's largest DIY buying alliances, A.R.E.N.A., which has its HQ South of Paris. We are facing many global challenges: • • • •

• • • • •

The impact of the current economic climate The uncertain geopolitical situation Persistent end-user purchasing power issues The impending European payment regulations that will undoubtedly have an impact on the cash flow of companies and their investments A volatile building market The breakthrough of digitalisation and technology The huge opportunity in the renovation market The uncertainty of sourcing operations The shortage of tradespeople.

All together these are crucial and critical concerns because they are forcing more and more DIY retailers and suppliers in the broad DIY sector to join forces in search of solutions to turn the tide. What deployment strategy should DIY retailers and suppliers adopt? Strategic Alliances as lever for growth? Strategic alliances are not a new phenomenon for retailers, but they are obviously opportunities for retailers and suppliers to reflect on a renewed model of partnership. How do European DIY retailers create added value among themselves and how can suppliers connect with them? To answer that key question, we had a closer look at one of the world’s largest DIY buying alliances which has its headquarters South of Paris. A.R.E.N.A. The A.R.E.N.A. alliance was created in 2000 by the French retail group Les Mousquetaires (Bricomarché, Bricorama and Brico Cash) and the German DIY retailer Hagebau. The other European members are: Jumbo (Switzerland, part of Coop Bau & Hobby), Bricofer (Italy), Dedeman (Romania), Pevex (Croatia) and Maxeda (Belgium and The Netherlands). Last year the alliance was strengthened by the addition of the Canadian retailer BMR (Montreal, Quebec), a subsidiary of Sollio Groupe Coopératif, which positions A.R.E.N.A. at world level. As this article was being produced the board of A.R.E.N.A. announced and welcomed its ninth member, Kent Building Supplies (Canada) part of J.D. Irving (St. John, New 38

Brunswick). Bruno Ménage, General Manager and Frank Staffeld, President, commented at the time “We welcome our new ally Kent Building Supplies, who strenghtens our Alliance and confirms the good momentum we’re in”. With this addition A.R.E.N.A. now has become a wordwide alliance representing close to 4,670 stores. That brings the total value of the A.R.E.N.A. alliance to more than €16 bn. Role and Mission for Strategic Alliances The core mission of a DIY strategic alliance is to optimise the buying, import and quality of product through traditional purchasing processes or by responding to calls for tender. It also means knowing how to buy by taking into account Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) considerations, which are now unavoidable. For quite understandable reasons, linked in particular to manufacturing costs, this sourcing has long been in Asia. However most of the Far-East countries, quite logically, want to supply their domestic markets first. Exports can therefore be interrupted, or at least limited, from time to time. And if you add for example, a drastic increase in the cost of transport by cargo ship and container, then sourcing products in the Far East becomes a challenge. In a nutshell, a strategic alliance puts its focus on five main issues: •

Streamlining internationally cooperative business approaches

Assuming organic growth for its members

Developing human competence, NPD (new product development), enhancing the performance of internal procedures and strengthening mutual skills

Increasing the value of sustainable procedures

Sharing best practice

Following the same logic, the idea is to also enhance the e-Commerce capability and all issues relating to databases and by extension data analytics. And for sure, in the near future, the power of nine international DIY & Home Improvement retail databases will allow A.R.E.N.A. to better benefit on the new opportunities regarding artificial intelligence (AI). January/February 2024

A View from Europe

Bringing sourcing closer together A.R.E.N.A. has opened a third office in Poland at the beginning of 2023, in addition to the three Asian sourcing offices based in Shanghai (China), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and New Delhi (India). Moreover, the alliance is empowering and improving its structures whilst enforcing the mass buying power amongst its members and putting the focus on allowing new members worldwide to join A.R.E.N.A. With the knowledge that DIY retail today is driven by multiple processes that require multiple areas of expertise, it seems logical that decision-making regarding procurement, marketing, logistics, e-Commerce, data intelligence, among others, should be driven mutually at retail level and at supplier’s level. That’s precisely where the renewed business model of partnership starts. The message is clear, there are lots of opportunities to create value whilst reinventing the model of joining forces. Testimonial by Jacques Hayaux du Tilly, Maxeda Group Assortment and Supply Chain Director Maxeda joined the A.R.E.N.A. Alliance in 2020 and we are now the 3rd largest contributor. The aim of the A.R.E.N.A. Alliance is to improve buying conditions and the results have been very positive for Maxeda. The Alliance has enabled us to discover new European suppliers but also to provide outlets for our existing suppliers.

The Alliance operates in a very pragmatic and operational way, which allows us to benefit from its purchasing power while retaining our autonomy. The A.R.E.N.A Alliance continues to grow and this opens up interesting prospects for the future.

Training

HAI Certificate in Hardware Retail and Merchanting latest Sponsored by Octabuild, the nine-month long mentor-based programme is designed to equip those new to the hardware retail/builders merchanting sector, and those in need of more structured training, with a knowledge and skills base that will enable them to contribute to the business of their employer. It will also help employees build a career in the sector. In December our Certificate students attended a compelling session on Credit Control, presented by Declan Flood, followed by a detailed Product Knowledge session on Plumbing Products by Rodney Keogh from Wavin Ireland.

By all accounts both students and mentors have noted tangible improvements in knowledge, confidence and performance, with respondents saying they would recommend the programme to a colleague. Developing innovative solutions to enable tradespeople to improve their efficiencies Recent reports on the shortage of trade professionals on these shores is hardly surprising. The situation that we find ourselves now in with most hardware retailers citing the shortage as a key impediment to their business development, has been fermented by many years of poor government policy on construction apprenticeships coupled with an underwhelming promotion of the construction sector as an exciting career path. While the shortage of trade professionals is not exclusive to Ireland, post Celtic tiger policies that urged partially educated apprentices to migrate only accentuated the probllem and a failing construction sector hardly encouraged an influx of new apprentices or graduates. We are now dealing with the fallout of these times and decisions. However, perhaps more relevant is that the obvious growth in our population and prosperity in recent years has been allowed to significantly outpace efforts to build a skilled construction workforce that could even begin to match the resultant construction demands. This is the real issue – it shouldn’t have happened this way. While the pandemic had a material impact on economic forecasts, it didn’t take a crystal ball to see that the construction sector was heating up. But with only a handful of apprenticeships enrolled in a four-year education cycle and no real push to add more, we are now suffering the consequences. We are however, as the man says, where we are. As merchants who are now experiencing this shortage through your bottom line, the unfortunate truth is that there appears to be no silver bullet to address it directly. You cannot simply create or import the high numbers of skilled tradespeople needed. While government agencies are now proactively supporting construction companies, the current recruitment competition between European countries in this space is nothing short of fierce. So, while it may be a bitter pill for many, this leaves builders merchants and hardware shops with few options to drive their business forward in the current environment. Competing on price, service and range are obvious go-to strategies, albeit not without significant cost or risk. A less considered strategy to consider may be to simply work better with what you already have – a customer base of active tradespeople with a finite output. If in doing so you can somehow help them increase this output, while retaining their loyal custom, then logically your sales will increase. Internationally we are seeing retailers embrace a partnership approach to achieving these goals. In the US a high-profile 44

TED LAVERTY CEO, Onlinetradesmen.ie

partnership was forged between giants Walmart and Angi, www.angi.com, coming together to create a closed loop installation services marketplace for Walmart products that increased Walmart’s average order. This is powered by Angi’s technology and its vetted trade membership. In the UK Selco provides an invoicing platform for its trade customers, helping them reduce their administration burden and free up their time to work on the tools. The above examples are just the beginning, but they show how forward thinking in retail can add value to an existing customer base while also adding to the bottom line. At Onlinetradesmen, www.onlinetradesmen.ie, we call this partnership approach ‘Service Channel’ – helping retailers to leverage their base to add new revenue streams and expand existing ones. Since 2006 we have been developing innovative solutions to enable tradespeople to improve their efficiencies on a day-to-day basis, increasing their output and profitability. We are now working with international retailers to deliver ‘Service Channel’ to their businesses. We believe there is a strong opportunity for Irish merchants to do the same. To date the Onlinetradesmen platform has processed in excess of 1.45M home improvement jobs across Ireland. While any economic slowdown may see the size of jobs reduce, we don’t see the volume or demand for qualified tradespeople diminishing within the RMI sector. Our market is both vibrant and well served, with many trade professionals choosing to work within the home improvement space over site work for the independence, rewards and work life balance that it provides. I don’t have to tell you that targeting this fragmented cohort is difficult and expensive. International behemoths like Screwfix and Amazon with seemingly unlimited budgets, continue to grow market share with these customers. While their mission is certainly to continue this growth, their business models leave adequate opportunities for local, innovative competitors to thrive. Ted Laverty is the CEO of Onlinetradesmen.ie – Ireland’s leading and only standards-based home improvement services marketplace. Connecting homeowners to qualified trade professionals for over 130 job types, Onlinetradesmen also provides business support services to thousands of tradespeople across Ireland. Founded in 2006, Onlinetradesmen has processed over 1.45M home improvement jobs. Onlinetradesmen partners with retailers and membership bodies to enable them to deliver value add services to their customers.

This impressive installation is estimated to generate approximately 193,348 kW hours of renewable electricity annually for the next three decades, representing a significant 21% of Topform’s overall annual usage. Paul Glynn, Managing Director of Topform, expressed his utmost satisfaction with Solgrid: “I needed a company I could trust to implement a sustainable energy solution. Solgrid, for me, were the complete package of knowledge, quality, and support that I needed.” Paul Glynn further commended Solgrid’s team for their professionalism: “A solar installation of our size was going to be January/February 2024

A simple but powerful application to harness building information Arguably the most important element of any business is sales. While aspects of a business such as quality of product, service or the levels of innovation etc, are all important a business will fail unless at some point its products are sold to customers. This seems fairly obvious. Identifying prospective customers has been a challenge since the dawn of commerce and it remains so in the twenty-first century. Those who sell products or services to construction projects, however, are at a distinct advantage because many of their potential customers are readily identifiable. They are identifiable because often projects are physically visible. They are identifiable because of engagement in regulatory processes. They are identifiable because updates charting the progress of projects are posted in the media, on social media and company blogs. Over the last ten years Building Information Ireland (BII) have listened to the needs of the industry and developed a simple but powerful application to harness this information and help subscribers identify opportunities. Built around a highly intuitive interface using google maps the BII application gives users access to the details of thousands of live projects. Using a quality controlled methodical procedure, construction projects are continuously added and updated to the BII database. Researchers constantly work adding detail and value. The easiest way to appreciate the BII service is to go ahead and take the free trial from the website www.buildinginfo.com. This will grant access to a fully functional free trial of the web-based application. The website allows users to create custom searches and exports to suit their needs. An alert system automatically emails users weekly to inform them of new projects or updates to their searches. The website also has CRM type features to facilitate collaborative working within organisations. We will be happy to take you on a demonstration of the application and customise the searches and alerts to your particular needs.

CIARAN CRAWLEY Building Information Ireland

Building Information Ireland also can provide a customisable API (Application Program Interface). This API allows for the seamless retrieval of data from the building information database. Customers who use their own CRM system can, and have, benefited by having sales opportunities imported directly into their systems. A simple once-off configuration is all that is required to get this feature up and running. The BII database contains details of construction projects of all scales from minor domestic alterations to massive projects such as the Children’s Hospital. It is among the most comprehensive construction datasets available. Using this comprehensive content BII can produce meaningful analysis that reflects the state of the Industry. The Building Information Ireland Index, please find the latest version at www.buildinginfo.com/industrynews/ gives a high-level analysis of the current state of the construction Industry in Ireland. The Index is the summation of the individual projects by sector and region from the structured database. Bespoke analysis can be undertaken to drill into individual regions or sectors. BII is one hundred percent Irish owned and operated. Since its inception over 10 years ago it has been a popular choice for Builders Providers and Hardware Suppliers around the country due to its intuitive and easy-to-use interface. E10 petrol is specially developed for everyday use of "year-round" engines like passenger cars. But what about smaller engines which are only used seasonally such as lawnmowers and brush cutters? These need a different fuel. The durability of E10 is short and not suitable for storage. When smaller engines have E10 in the tank, the following happens: Rubber seals are affected. This results in leaks from gaskets, hoses and other rubber or plastic seals. The engine takes a beating and corrosion occurs, which damages the carburettor. The result is starting problems and engine failure. Fortunately, there is a petrol that stands the test of time and does not cause the engine to spit out harmful exhaust gases. 50

Garden Fertilisers & Chemicals The Whelehan Gardening team have provided a Seasonal Store Set-Up Checklist for 2024. •

• •

Set up early! Keen gardeners will buy the products they know they will need, as soon as they see them on sale, even as early as the beginning of February; as soon as we get the first mild day of the year, they will be out in their gardens, tidying and cleaning up and getting their gardens ready for the season ahead Early, pre-season displays of moss and algae control products especially, (such as Patio Magic, MossOff, etc.), will see immediate extra sales if displays are prominent and offers are clearly displayed Identify and highlight the various categories and subcategories within the Fertilisers & Chemicals displays. Plant Feeding, Lawncare, Weed Control, Pest & Disease Control products should be merchandised by category to avoid consumer confusion. Maximise use of Point-Of-Sale material to help identify the above categories Special Offer signage is essential and should be checked regularly – there is no point doing a Special Offer if the consumer does not know about it Off-shelf displays of key gardening products in high-traffic areas of your store will massively increase impulse purchases Free standing display units of volume lines can result in 50%-60% extra growth in sales and can be used to create a dedicated “Special Promotion” display area in your store Remember that consumers are not always looking for the cheapest product; offering promotions and good value with branded products will grow turnover and drive cash margin growth Value-Added, “Extra Free” packs, offered by suppliers of the key branded products, are a great way to encourage consumers to spend a little extra while maintaining retail margins TV and Multi-Media advertising of the key brands will drive consumer awareness of new and existing branded products; ensure that you do not miss out on potential extra business by not having the advertised products in stock. The Cork Plastic’s product ranges were very complementary to Pipelife Irelands existing product ranges, with the additional advantage of providing a very solid sales presence in external cladding, Rainwater and Roofline systems for the building industry in Ireland, the UK and Europe.

They offer a comprehensive range of products including uPVC fascia, soffit, window boards, external cladding, and gutter systems. Their products add style and definition to domestic, commercial and industrial buildings, and are available in a wide variety of profiles and colours to suit any construction project. The Pipelife range of rainwater systems – Xtraflo, Niagara, Hi-Cap, Half Round, Square and MiniFlo offer a wide choice of profile design, both traditional and modern, in a range of colours to suit all tastes and applications. •

Hi-Cap, a semi-elliptical profile with a high capacity suitable for large roof areas.

Niagara Ogee, a traditional ogee style profile - probably the highest capacity domestic PVC-U Rainwater System on the market.

XtraFlo, a 170mm semi-elliptical System, for large Commercial/Industrial buildings, which links to a 110mm downpipe system.

A comprehensive selection of co-extruded cellular foam and rigid PVC-UE building profiles completes the Pipelife range of Roofline products.

Pipelife, is also a name synonymous with high quality PVC-U roofline products for new build and home improvement projects, with its wide range of rainwater systems. The Pipelife reputation for technical excellence, competitively priced and quality finished products have established the company as a leading supplier of PVC-U plastic building products. The Pipelife range of Fascia Boards are used in both new build work, total replacement, or refurbishment by covering existing timber. Their PVC-UE Cladding Systems are suitable for external use on buildings as a decorative and protective facing, fixed vertically, horizontally, or diagonally over brick, block, masonry and timber framed walling. 54

An initial capital investment of €30m now underway to expand and upgrade their existing production facility in Little Island, Cork, will result in them having one of the most modern facilities within the Pipelife Group. By 2026 there will be 35 state-of-the-art extrusion lines incorporating the latest automation technologies, with a planned output approaching 45,000 tonnes per annum. This significant investment in new equipment, personnel, and services will position their Irish operations as a world-class manufacturing facility for many years to come. The investment also shows Pipelife’s long-term commitment to the Irish market and the scale, modernity, and product portfolio will make Pipelife very attractive as a supply chain partner for the major merchant groups, builders, and installers in the country. Wavin solutions include market leading Hep2O hot and cold plumbing and underfloor heating, soil and waste, sewer systems, roof drainage, and stormwater management.

Innovation has always at the heart of the business. In 1978, Wavin Ireland developed and launched the market leading Wavin Access Junction (WAJ). It continues to be the number one selling access junction.

The WAJ 110 provides access from surface level to Wavin below ground 110 diameter gravity drainage and sewer systems. The WAJ 110mm is available in 10 flow profiles and is complete with Wafix. What has made the Wavin WAJ so successful? There are many reasons but here are just 10 of the reasons that make it the no.1 choice for installers and a must stock item for merchants. •

Its fully certified, market leading quality reduces the risk of having to re-work installations. Fit the best – forget the rest. Ten flow profiles and matching invert levels for inlets and outlets for maximum flow with less risk of blockages and making rodding easier. Socket profile that allows a high angle of deflection, so you have more connection flexibility. Push-fit sealer riser with a choice of covers. Durable, thick-walled PVC system for ultimate performance. Extras like directional flow arrows to reduce the risk of installation errors, and third-party certification mark out the WAJ as superior. Part of a complete Wavin Sewer System. Kitemarked compliant with EN 13598-1 and Building Regulations – Part H – to a maximum depth of 0.6m, Wavin’s Access Junction is tested, trusted, proven and better at every turn.

Wavin offers a complete innovative range of chambers from 315mm access junctions up to 1000mm manholes. Declan Conlon, Sales Manager, Wavin Ireland said, “Given the demands of the construction industry, it’s vital that installers have a product they can trust, that gets the job done right, first time without expensive re-works or replacements which cost time and money. The WAJ range delivers reliability and peace of mind for installers which is why it remains a bestselling product almost 50 years after its introduction.” To see more about the bestselling WAJ range scan the QR Code below.
