Pope Francis Unites City of Brotherly Love

By Tristen Mordan '17 Almost a year ago when it was announced that Pope Francis would come to Philadelphia, many were very excited for the pontiff’s arrival. Now that his historic visit to Philadelphia and the United States is over, the Pope’s popularity has only grown within the United States and especially in the City of Brotherly Love. From his arrival at the Philadelphia International Airport to his final mass on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, everything that Pope Francis did was priority news in Philly.

Pope Francis delivers his homily at Mass held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 27.

As Pope Francis’ popularity increases throughout the world, so does the amount of people that are coming back to the Church,

“I think Francis is kind of like that great coach who, even when you're in the midst of the hardest practice ever, or the worst season of your

This pilgrimage, held at St. Joseph’s Prep High School, allowed for students of Jesuit schools all over North America to be actively involved and immersed in the papal visit. My job as an Imperator was simple; ensure that these freshman, the future of St. Joe’s Prep, have as great of a time being welcomed to this institution as I did in 2012. Making a Splash at the Prep

By Aidan O'Connor '17 This winter, Prep swimming is seeing its third head coach in three years: Coach Kelley Voss. She is assuming the role after Coach Willard resigned after one year at the helm. Willard had only good things to say about the position as he stepped down, only citing the time strain as his reason for leaving. Commuting from his job as a teacher in New Jersey and then back to his family every night ended up being more than he had expected. The search started around the end of July and was led by Mr. Hart ’95, the new athletic director. He explained that the search was difficult since many qualified coaches are either coaching for club teams or for other schools in the area. In the end, the search process came up with the extremely

qualified candidate of Coach Voss. Coach Voss grew up in Ohio and comes from a very athletic family. She has previously worked as a coach for the Jersey Wahoos swim team and as a private swim instructor. She is married to a Prep alumnus and also holds the distinction of becoming the Prep’s first female head

coach.

Due to the recently shifting nature of the swim coaches at the Prep, there is a question of what changes will occur this year. Mr. Morrissey, who was head swim coach before Mr. Willard, will reprise his role of moderator for the second year in a row. He brings many years of experience

with him. Furthermore, Mr. Hart has expressed that he believes Coach Voss will keep the things that have worked consistently for the team, while adding a unique spin of her own. He continued about Voss, saying: “She brings a great energy and excitement. She also has a great pedigree herself in swimming”. In addition to Voss as the new head swim coach, this year the Prep has also hired a new head lacrosse coach and two assistant wrestling coaches. They are currently searching for both a new bowling coach and a freshman baseball coach.

The kind people of the area were so humbled by the freshman’s hard work, and it was a touching moment to see the new faces reacting so well to service, an integral part of our life here at school. So, it is safe to say the IGNITE Freshman Retreat was truly a success. I am very blessed to be able to relive such a wonderful experience, with both nostalgic hindsight and a brand new insight. and blessed all the Prep guys who were standing there and chanting,” said Mr. Rosinski. While millions gathered from a wide array of backgrounds to listen to the Pope’s words of acceptance and the importance of family, a constant theme of humility was displayed by him. Numerous times he reminded the people to pray for him, a Continued on page 4.
