Food Drive Primed for Most Successful Year Ever

By Fintan O'Toole '16 Wintry cold accompanies the looming November days, but the Prep hopes to add quite a bit of warmth and love to the mix by supporting local Philadelphia residents. Beginning Monday, November 2, the Prep is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, which collects a variety of Turkey Day favorites to be distributed to families in the area. Coordinator Mr. Leo Vaccaro ‘05 has great hopes for the Food Drive, which is being carried out in a manner

Members ofthe Prep community can now make Thanksgiving Food Drive donations online, via yougivegoods.com.

While generous donations under this system have made the Prep home to one of the largest food donations in the area, YouGiveGoods provides an improved plan that has the potential to maximize the largesse of the Prep community. The new method of collection allows contributors to the cause to access the Prep Food Drive from anywhere around the country. By simply accessing the Prep page on yougivegoods.com (which will be sent out this weekend), donors can click on the individual items that Continued on page 3.

Championship. The team shot 334, trailing behind Radnor’s score of 312. The team had hoped to place higher, but it is a young squad. “We have other players who stepped up this year but losing four good golfers made the team a little weaker. We have a couple guys who already can shoot well and we will need to rely on some of the younger

teammates to improve and develop so they can contribute,” says Jack Mitchell ‘17, who led the team with six over par. Golf Falls Short in State Championship

By Aidan O’Connor ‘17 On Thursday, October 29th, the Prep golf team conceded its title as State Champion to Radnor High School. After being postponed from Wednesday due to rain, the State Championship kicked off at 10:00 a.m. yesterday. The Prep, led by captains Mike Burns ‘16 and Alex Butler ‘16, took fourth place in its second year of competition in the PIAA Class AAA State

Hitting It Off: Preseason Baseball

By Christopher Magiera ‘17 The Prep’s baseball team will be entering this upcoming season with a bevy of high expectations, following its deep playoff run last season on its way to a District 12 Championship and PIAA State Quarterfinals appearance. However, each season begins before spring has sprung, as a great deal of action, including the formation of the team, takes place in the fall. “The fall season is meant for guys to just get additional reps, some of younger players to meet older players, and really for them to just continue to play baseball and get better,” head coach, Mr. Joe Falcone ‘91, said with regard to the fall season in general. In this fall season, many players receive the chance to showcase their skills to prove their worth on the roster, and to exhibit some of this improvement. Such is the case for transfer Jeff Manto ‘17, who came from Conwell Egan to the Prep this year as a player whom Falcone has “never seen play.”

The Prep's baseball team was crowned 2015 District 12 Champions.

“He has caught, played some third, and some first for us this fall,” Falcone said. Also showcased in the fall league was a multitude of prospective firsttime varsity players, who have seen a fruitful fall season. “Some of the younger players, not on varsity, have progressed, like Luke Donaphon, and Pat Woltemate,” Falcone said in response to specific player progression this fall. Heading into this season, though, the fall league offers the team a chance to rectify some of its major weaknesses on the field, such as the inexperience in the batter's box that

Falcone specified as the team's biggest weakness. But, it has “progressed through the fall.” The Prep is nearing the end of the fall season with a 6-1 record. “[They are] not playing against other teams’ full squads, and [the team] is made up of mostly junior varsity players, some who won’t even make the team,” Falcone said in regards to the level of competition. The fall league also includes the use of wooden bats—another circumstance distinct from the regular spring season. Overall, though, the fall league presents an exciting opportunity to players to get better and know more other their fellow teammates.

Interested in Service? The Travis Manion Foundation is offering two days of service to a limited number of Prep students.

“I’m excited to see what the current sophomores have to bring. They had a good year at JV last season, and I’m excited to start workouts in early November,” pitcher J.T. Gossweiler ‘17 said. Heading into the spring season, Falcone and Gossweiler agreed that the biggest asset to the team is the pitching staff. “Pitching will be the biggest strength, especially with the return of three of the majority innings pitchers, Billy Matz ‘16, Colin Scanlon ‘17 and J.T. Gossweiler ‘17,” says Falcone. Scanlon, an AllCatholic and All-City First Team player, was instrumental in the team’s deep playoff run last spring. Gossweiler added to this, agreeing in regards to the strength of the core starting pitchers. “There is a lot of young talent, and losing seniors is a big deal. You can never fully replace them. It is going to be a different atmosphere with less seniors, but I’m confident we will be quite successful this season.”

Student of the Week

By Aidan Donaher ‘16 This week’s student of the week is Francis Maniscalco ‘16. You may recognize Frank if you went to the Prep soccer game last weekend, as he was the spectacular netminder who kept the game close. Maniscalco was recently voted to the All-Catholic Second Team. He also excels

in the classroom, as he carries a 3.6 GPA. He plans to apply to Scranton, Hood College, Dominican University, and SJU, and hopes to continue his soccer career in college. After a great season in which teammates compared his presence in the net to a “young [Asmir] Begović,” Maniscalco has commanded interest from colleges.

“All [my success] comes from Jon Taddei’s hair. It’s crucial to our team,” says Maniscalco. He also praised the efforts of soccer manager Pat Gillespie ‘16. Frank is also an active participant in the History Club. Congratulations, Francis.

If the Prep community is able to reach the goals that the Food Drive has set (obtaining all of the food items and the amount needed) by the close of the drive on November 11th, there will be historic implications. “We hope the generosity of the community allows us to hold the largest food drive ever run by a high school in the history of the country,” says Vaccaro.

That’s right. If all goals are accomplished, the Prep’s 2015 Thanksgiving Food Drive can set a national record for high school food drives in total weight of food donated. With an expectation of creating around 325 Thanksgiving baskets, the Drive has the chance to make an amazing difference in and beyond the Prep community by serving roughly 260 families in the neighborhood. In addition, excess food will

One-third of our world is starving, but there is enough food to feed everyone three times over. With a logistical improvement to the food collecting system, the Prep hopes to lay the foundation for a new way of food collection that will benefit the community for years to come.
