Edit or ial: To Th e Class of 2020 By Jon Er dy '17 Students, faculty, and administration, we at The Hawkeye hope that you had a very happy, healthy, and restful summer and are ready for the year that lies ahead of us.

By Mat t hew Phil l ips '18 Over the past few years, the Prep has more than earnestly pushed its unique appeal of being a Jesuit school located in North Philadelphia, only a fifteen-minute drive from the heart of the city and within walking distance of numerous Philly attractions.

Mayor Jim Kenney '76 (D) greets C&S performers after the show.

Though this unique appeal is certainly clear to all those who study and work at the Prep, rarely has it been as evident as over the past few months in the Cape and Sword Drama Society.

one of which was Mayor Kenney '76, who was once quoted as saying he regretted not acting in high school, and who agreed to appear as one of the cameos. Not only did the mayor love his cameo on the Prep

stage, but he also enjoyed watching the performance of Curtains, perhaps to an even greater degree. ?Mayor Kenney adored his entire experience being back at the Prep doing his cameo,? Continued on Page 3.

To the Class of 2020, I want to welcome you into the brotherhood that is The Prep. You have undoubtedly left a mark on where you have come from, whether that be from your grade school, sports team, activity, or family. However, you are now beginning a new journey that is both dynamic and exciting. As I look back on the past three years of my life, The Prep has provided me with many different

experiences that has challenged my thinking and helped myself and others to grow into more complete people. This is a place made up of people from all walks of life and from all corners of the Delaware Valley. This is a place that makes leaders out of outsiders. This is a place that brings the best out of people. You need only to watch the interactions between students in the halls, a teacher taking extra time to go over material before a test, or the energy in the student section of a football game to see the culture that The Prep cultivates. A week before my first day in my freshman year, my Continued on Page 3.

those achievements didn?t warrant the need for more spectacular performances, the results of last season certainly do.

Football season is upon us once again, and as fans of the Prep?s top tier program know, you?d be hard pressed to find anything that matches the intensity of a rivalry game. As always, the Prep will match wits and ability with tough division opponents such as Roman Catholic and archrival LaSalle, and this year some new adversaries have been added to that number. Due to a realignment in Philadelphia Catholic League, Archbishop Wood and The Prep both lie in the Red Division. Prep and Wood last met in

Coach Gabe Infante, poised to lead the Prep to another successful season. 2013, where the Prep wrestled away a win from the Vikings by a score of 31-21. This year?s matchup between these two

powerhouses is greatly anticipated, and for good reason. Both The Prep and Archbishop Wood

have produced phenomenal performances over the past few seasons. In both 2013 and 2014, in addition to

remarkable records, each program posted state championship wins in their respective PIAA classifications. If

The Prep and Wood fell short of their respective goals, neither able to repeat for third year as state Champions. Wood?s season ended last year in the District 12 finals. The Prep was bested by LaSalle in the final seconds of the PCL Final. These outcomes should serve as major impetuses for upcoming games. Because the matchup between Prep and Wood is the first in league game for each team, they Continued on Page 2.

Team USA Dom in at es in Rio By Nick Pal ermo '18 Team USA had yet another successful campaign at the Olympics, leading the pack in gold medals (46) and the overall medal count (121). The American roster at the 31st Summer Olympic Games featured familiar faces such as Justin Gatlin and Kerri Walsh Jennings, and also introduced some

new stars like Laurie Hernandez and Cody MIller. .

the 100m butterfly. If any race stood out to Phelps, it was the 200m butterfly. Phelps narrowly lost against South African swimmer Chad le Clos in the 2012 Olympic games four years prior. Last month in Rio, Phelps defeated Le Clos and all others in the pool to claim gold yet again, avenging his silver medal finish in London and cementing his claim as the greatest Olympian of all time. Simone Biles came into Rio already considered one of the all time greats in the sport of gymnastics. With three all-around World Championships (2013-2015), the 2016 Olympic games were considered hers to lose and this summer, she did not disappoint.

gold with her American teammates Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian, and Aly Raisman. She also took gold in the all-around competition, the vault, and the floor exercise and took the bronze medal in the balance beam. She is now tied for the most medals by a U.S. female gymnast at a single Olympics with 5 medals. The women?s heptathlon champion and men?s decathlon champion are often considered the world?s greatest athletes. To win the event in the Olympics twice is near impossible given the rigor and physical demands of training for such a grueling event. Ashton Eaton, however, defied the odds and won his second Olympic gold in the decathlon, and

tied the Olympic record for the most points scored in the event. With this year?s victory in Rio, he became just the third two-time in Olympic decathalon history. Katie Ledecky dominated her second Olympic Games. She participated in the 2012 London Olympics, where she was the youngest American athlete competing for Team USA. She shocked the crowd in the 800m freestyle when she put up the second fastest time in history and won gold. Between Olympics, she worked on her sprint speed. She now races in events as short as 100m. In Rio this summer, she won gold in the 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle with a world record time, 4x200m freestyle, Continued on Page 5.

ESPNU (Con t .) will be looking to make a strong impression. The stakes are even higher because of the presentation of this monumental clash. The game will be broadcasted on national television, on ESPNU. The game is part of the 2016 GEICO ESPN High School Showcase? a 10 week, 12 game schedule of high school football games between powerhouse programs from across the country. The Prep and Wood are the

only Pennsylvania teams to be featured in this series on these televised, prime time match ups. I can?t imagine anyone who wouldn?t want to execute when they?re on such a high level. Even so, many players are just trying to treat this fierce contest with the same level-headed attitude as a normal game. Linebacker and Captain James Johnson ?17 stated ?As an individual and

for the team as a whole, this game is just another step in the process. It?s the most important game just as every game is the most important game because it is an opportunity to get better and to compete.? Fans of the Prep and fans of football in general will have to wait until Friday, September 16th to witness the battle on the gridiron. The game will be played at 7:00pm at Archbishop Wood.

You will find yourselves in situations that are uncomfortable, even over-burdensome. You will be required to go beyond what is easy, in pursuit of something greater than yourself. But you are no longer just a number. With that said, the Prep experience is a holistic one to those who take advantage of it. For all the moments and experiences that I cherished throughout the years, there was a decision to embrace something new, even if at the time I questioned it, or was even afraid of it. I urge you to expand your horizons during your time in this special place. Try a new sport or activity that you don?t know about, reach out to different people, connect with a teacher, go to the football games, the mixers, the formals, daily service, intramural games and if nothing else, there?s always a spot at The Hawkeye for you. In front of you is a new world of possibilities and a new person to discover. Take advantage of your time and appreciate it. It goes faster than it feels in the moment. Class of 2020, welcome home.

Su m m er Ser vice Tr ips En r ich Com m u n it ies, Pr ep St u den t s By Jon Erdy '17 One of the oldest adages of Jesuit philosophy comes from St. Ignatius of Loyola himself: ?Go Forth and Set the World on Fire?. This summer, many Seniors did just that. From the swamplands of Louisiana, to the deserts of New Mexico, Prep students participated in service trips across the country, building houses, running summer camps, and spreading goodwill to the communities they visited. Andrew Devany ?17 and his group spent the week making hiking trails for an older couple in rural Virginia. ?The most rewarding experience was being able to eat dinner [with] the family we were staying with after a

long day,? Devany says, ??Granny?and ?Pawpaw?which they insisted to be called, cooked some of the best dinners I?ve ever had. They made us feel like part of the family.? Andrew continued, ?[Building the trails] wasn?t that hard or really rewarding in itself, but Granny and Pawpaw?s overwhelming gratitude made it worth it.? On the other side of the country, Matt Zito ?17 and seven others were running a summer camp for children in St. Michael?s Arizona. ?[We] worked as counselors at an outdoor summer camp where we took kids on field trips to cultural monuments, brought in various speakers from their nation, and also played games with them,? he explained.

?The most satisfying aspect of my service trip was the opportunity to build relationships with people that were in some ways completely different from myself but in other, exactly the same. I feel blessed to have been able to learn about the Navajo culture and work to help these kids.? The different locations offered an array of unique challenges and considerations to the Prep retreatants and unequivocally provided them with a new awareness of lives outside of our region and our homes, making for an unforgettable experience for all involved.

Fou n din g Fat h er Blow s Us All Aw ay: A Review of Hamilton By Aidan O'Connor '17 As I walked out of the multipurpose room following my AP US History exam sophomore year, I assumed that would be the last I would be even remotely interested in the Federalist Papers, Marquis de Lafayette, or Alexander Hamilton. However, Lin Manuel Miranda had other plans. Alexander Hamilton: An American Musical is a musical written by Lin Manuel Miranda about the founding father Alexander Hamilton, whom Miranda

portrays. Its success on Broadway has led to eleven Tonys, a Grammy, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. While a musical about founding fathers may sound boring as a concept, it is certainly not. The history is told through the use of hip hop and rap. The cast, as Miranda explains, is as diverse as modern America is today. The play follows the path of Hamilton, starting off as a poor orphan in the Caribbean, all the way to being Secretary of the

Treasury and the right hand man of George Washington. Hamilton, armed with a quill, uses his power of writing to rise to the top. This, Miranda realized, is a man who is the epitome of the hip hop story.
