Lacrosse Looks t o Succeed Under New Head Coach By Zachary Carr ?19 This year, the Prep?s lacrosse team is looking to enjoy another deep playoff run. ?The season has been going well so far,? says first year coach, Sean DeLaney. The Prep has had some tough early season matchups, including a game against last year?s no. 1 ranked team in the country, the Haverford School. After a difficult stretch of games to begin the season, the Hawks are still looking forward to some key games. Last Friday, they traveled to New Jersey to play Lenape. ?They [Lenape] are very talented,

and have a lot of D-I recruits, and it will be a big test for the boys?, says DeLaney. The Prep plays St. Augustine, another New Jersey foe, tomorrow. ?We?re looking forward to our matchup against St. Augustine at the Katie Samson Festival, which always has a good crowd, and supports a good cause,? says senior captain and four-year starter Kevin Stump ?16. Stump also said that the team is looking forward to their game against La Salle. ?After that, it?s La Salle week,? he says. DeLaney also looks forward to

A Let t er t o t he Edit ors Re: Shoul d a Diversit y Course Be a Graduat ion Requirement at t he Prep?

To the Editors: I read with no small interest the debate over the possibility of a diversity course requirement at SJP in your last issue, and I have a few thoughts to convey. But first, I want to share an anecdote. In my AP English IV course, while we read a novel set in the Sudan called Seasons of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih, I assign my students a project. In groups, they research African nations. Each group learns how its assigned country operated before it was colonized by Europeans in the 19th century, which European invader colonized it and for what reasons, and how the indigenous peoples of that nation agitated against colonial power to eventually gain self-sovereignty. Then they present their findings to the class. Students are

surprised to learn that many African nations have their own versions of George Washington - Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, and Patrice Lumumba of the Congo, for instance - and that all of these nations have rich histories and vibrant cultural institutions worthy of scholarly study. Students have remarked to me at the end of the project, ?Wow! I never knew this!? and then the inevitable follow-up, ?How come no one ever taught me this stuff?? As a result of the project, some students even go on to pursue their own lines of intellectual inquiry, such as the student who went on to listen to Nigerian funk musician Fela Kuti and consider how his politically-charged music influences (and ultimately gets sampled by)

American hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar.

So what might diversity courses look like? Well, that would be for the faculty to determine, though two current courses, my African American Literature elective and Mr. Pinto?s Native American Spirituality class, would be logical fits. Perhaps students could choose from a menu of options across multiple disciplines to satisfy the requirement. Those courses could also satisfy other requirements, like English, Theology, History, FIne Arts, or Modern Language credits, as well. That way, we do not burden Prep students with yet another mandated course in an already packed curriculum.

should come to incorporate issues of diversity and inclusion into every course he/ she teaches, embedding it into existing curricula throughout the academic year wherever possible. Then it would become part of the proverbial air we breathe, in the same way that 1:1 educational technology is now at SJP. If technological literacy is a priority at the Prep, so too should cultural literacy be paramount. But until that day arrives, a specific course requirement would ensure that no student graduates without studying closely at least one aspect of diversity.

However, this is an interim solution only, a stop-gap way to fill curricular holes. In the long-term, each teacher at the Prep

With the team hungry for success, the Prep?s lacrosse squad should enjoy a deep playoff run.

Prep Judo Cl ub Founded By Mac Riga '17 The Prep has never lacked a variety of diverse clubs. From the Harry Potter Club to the Fishing Club, the Prep has consistently produced a vast spectrum of activities for all to enjoy. This tradition was continued this Monday with the inaugural meeting of the Judo Club led by Duncan Waite ?18. Despite his relative youth, Waite holds a commanding knowledge of the sport, having participated in the Japanese martial art for ten years and performed on a national level. Waite clarified in his presentation that he was knowledgeable not only in the history

of the sport, but also in its practice. He has achieved the second-highest rank from the elusive black belt, and he is well on his way to certification as an official coach of the sport. ?I founded the club for personal and fun reasons,? says Waite. ?Personally, I want to preserve the original spirit of Judo alive which has been shamefully americanized into the entity that is ?Sport Judo.? ?The fun part is going to be taking that authentic, superior style of Judo, plunge into the Judo hotbeds of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland, and have a lot of fun dominating the opposition alongside my Prep brothers.

"Those are my motivations, but I am only hopeful at this point that the Judo club progresses that far.? Waite described the various types of Judo that would be practiced? both combat Judo, and non-combat ?form? Judo, focusing on mastery of technique. Waite shared that his plan was to have the club members compete in at least two tournaments in Maryland and New Jersey, and hopefully participate in local tournaments in Pennsylvania as well, in both the light and heavyweight divisions.

get the Prep to subsidize tournament entry charges as well. And, as is the case with all great clubs, food will be provided at meetings. The students who attended the information session were enthused about the club. Several of the students asked for an exhibition of Waite?s judo prowess, including Liam Scott ?17, upon whom the demonstration was performed. ?Duncan is super knowledgeable.? said Scott afterwards. ?He was even able to lift me from a standing position and swing me over his shoulder with ease.?

The baseball team celebrates in South Carolina. By Evan Mat t hews '18 At the Prep, students are faced with many failures that they must overcome. In the game of baseball, failure coincides with everything. From offense to defense to pitching, every baseball player knows the struggle to overcome this failure. The Prep?s baseball team recently made its four-day trip to South Carolina. Despite the 14-hour bus ride caused by bus malfunctions, the trip was an overall success. Even though the team went 1-2, its members are young, and gained good experience.

While holding two beneficial practices, the team managed to bond together as the week progressed. ?We went to South Carolina because the fields are turf and I know that if there is any rain at all, they do a really good job at getting the games in,? explains head coach Mr. Joseph Falcone ?91, explaining the reasons for the trip. ?A lot of other places don?t have turf fields and if you go to Florida when you have a game, it?s hard for those facilities to get the games in." This was the third time the team has gone down in the last six years, and the second year in a row. With only seven seniors and two juniors returning

from last year?s team. The Prep has only three players with at least 25 plate appearances compared to last year, when seven players had 25 or more plate appearances. This alone demonstrates the inexperience, as well as the potential, of the players. Falcone motivates the players to ?take responsibility of their own playing abilities and positional responsibilities and while keeping in the back of their minds, that everything they do, everything they practice, every move they make is for the betterment of the team so that the goal for the team should always be thought of while you?re getting your own individual work in.?

This philosophy helped last year?s team end the season on a very positive note, coming in third in the PCL. Compared to last year?s team, there are many parallels in the beginning of the season, with last year?s team also struggling at the start of the season. Overall, though, the team must overcome many obstacles and continue to represent the Prep in a fight to win the PCL.

Jamie Vardy and Leicest er Cit y Def y t he Odds By Christ opher Magiera ?17 On April 1, 2015, matchday no. 32 in the 2014-15 Barclays Premier League season, the standings included the usual suspects at the top of the table? Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United. If one looked further down the standings, one would find the lowly Leicester (pronounced ?Lester?) City, sitting in last place, far from safety, and certain for relegation. Fast forward to that same day in 2016, and one would notice Leicester City, hailing from the center of England, on the top of the table by an impressive seven points. English oddsmakers had LCFC at 5,000-to-one odds to win the title in the English first division this season. To put that into perspective, only a month later, the same oddsmakers estimated Kim Kardashian?s chances of becoming the next president of the United States at a mere 1,000-to-one odds. The long odds made sense at the beginning of the season. Not too long ago, LCFC was playing in England?s third tier of the soccer pyramid. Each of LCFC?s leading stars has had an equally unlikely rise to glory. Breakout performers and leading candidates for Player of the Year include the likes of Riyad

Mahrez, N?golo Kante, and Jamie Vardy. Riyad Mahrez and N?Golo Kante got their professional starts in France, with the former playing in France?s seventh division and the latter hitting the poorly kept pitches of the eighth division. The current situation for both players is a far cry from where they used to be, but it is no mistake that they got here. Kante is noted for his extremely high level of fitness, as noted by LCFC manager Claudio Ranieri. ?This player Kante, he was running so hard that I thought he must have a pack full of batteries hidden in his shorts. He never stopped running in training,? he says. Perhaps everybody?s favorite? and the man who truly represents LCFC?s dramatic and unlikely rise? is 29-year-old breakout star Jamie Vardy. Vardy grew up in Hillsborough, England, and quickly fell in love with soccer. However, he suffered a crushing blow to his hopes of one day becoming a professional as he was cut at the age of 16 from English giant Sheffield Wednesday. After being cut at 16, Vardy admitted ?football might just not be meant for me.?

efforts, win or lose. ?All I want is for you to fight. If they are better than us, okay, congratulations. But they have to show us they are better,? Ranieri wrote, noting that the ?usual suspects? would always be heavily favored against them. Not only will those teams be favored, but the financial gulf between the two teams will always remain a talking point, as fourth-place Manchester City?s squad is valued at 292 million pounds (about $415 million) and league-leading Leicester City?s squad is valued at 21 million pounds (about $30 million).

So much for the traditionally mega-wealthy teams that are so accustomed to being handed the title, as Leicester City has continued to prove that the old saying ?You can?t buy class? is as germane as ever. Ranieri summarizes Leicester?s position on the verge of winning an unprecedented Premier League title. ?This is a small club that is showing the world what can be achieved through spirit and determination. reasons why Twitter is such an effective tool to candidates.

regarding certain issues that people from that state would care about.

First, Twitter is free. Rather than paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to run a 30-second advertisement that causes most people to eyeroll as soon as it comes on television, why wouldn?t a candidate want to take advantage of a free resource to relay any message he or she would like?

Obviously, all of the candidates? followers, no matter their geographical location, would see the message, but there is no harm in that because it would only inform more citizens about how the candidate plans to deal with that issue.

Second, Twitter is not only an easy way to attack your opponents, but it is a great way to promote yourself. With Twitter, one can directly target certain groups of people. For example, as it nears closer to the date of a certain important primary or caucus, the candidate can start tweeting messages

The candidate who has utilized Twitter the most during this campaign is Donald Trump. Whether you hate or love him, he is getting more out of social media than any other candidate. Whether he is making follow-up statements on something that happened in a debate, releasing a message reminding his supporters to

vote, or attacking other candidates such as ?Lyin?Ted? (from a Donald Trump Tweet), Trump has been very active on social media throughout his attempt at the presidency, and it may certainly be having an effect on his lead in the polls. Overall, as society progresses, technology is becoming more and more ubiquitous in every aspect of our world, but, during election season, because it is only once every four years, Americans really get to see how much more of a role social media is playing now than it ever has before. In the future, expect social media to only become more and more important during election season.
