Prep Football Loses the Explorers in 49-24 Victory

By Fintan O’Toole ‘16 Heated words. Intense play. Students aggressively cheering on the Prep with unmatched intensity. The Prep vs. La Salle football rivalry impresses and entertains year after year due to amazing moments like these. Last Saturday’s game proved to be another classic in the long line of contests, as the Hawks took Quarterback Kevin Shaw '16 looks to pass the ball as the Prep dominates La Salle. down the Explorers, 49-24. Hawks’ on-field the Explorers in the first half Through all the roar the and festivity of rivalry week, resilience made the most behind rushing touchdowns noise. The Hawks pounded from Benny Walls ‘16 and Joe

Dumond ‘16, and a tremendous kickoff return touchdown from Terrance Green ‘17. The game looked out of hand early, but no PrepLa Salle matchup is ever complete without some drama. Late in the third quarter, the Explorers showed serious grit and pulled within four points, 28-24. Prep needed to dig deep and replicate their first quarter play. The Travis Manion Foundation: Instilling Leadership in Men for Others By Aidan O’Connor ‘17 Have you noticed Navy Seals, Marines, and other military personnel strolling down the Prep’s corridors toward room 102 on Wednesday afternoons? If so, then you have spotted integral members of a recently added extracurricular activity: the Travis Manion Foundation leadership training program. The Travis Manion Foundation leadership training program takes war veterans and pairs them with driven students seeking to improve their leadership skills. The Prep is one of the

pilot schools for this program, which will hopefully be expanded throughout the nation in the coming years. The Prep first became involved with the Travis Manion Foundation after one of the founders came to the Prep to talk about the summer reading book, The Yellow Birds. After this talk, the leadership program has run twice per year for ten-week sessions. Students learn the virtues of leadership, such as integrity, moral courage, physical courage, grit, and resilience. Beyond classroom learning, the students involved

learn these lessons firsthand, whether at a rock climbing gym, or at a Crossfit run by a Prep alumnus. One large aspect of the course is the Travis Manion National Day of Service. This year, more than 180 Prep students took part in the beautification of a

commercial corridor in Frankford. It gives the students a chance to put their own distinct leadership styles to the test. As more students graduate the program, an alumni group dubbed “TMF Continued on page 2

Prep vs. La Salle (Cont'd) commented on the resilience of the players, who never seemed to become flustered. “[Our guys] never got scared; they just stayed determined. The focus was on defense and getting stops. Our defensive line did a great job getting into the backfield and our corners and safeties stepped up their coverage. That relieved a lot of the pressure La Salle was putting on us.” Kicker Alex Talbot ‘16 was a testament to this determination Clinton discussed, as he rallied from

early kicking struggles to nail every extra point after the first touchdown and pin the Explorers deep in their zone with long kickoffs. “I just wanted to keep the past in the past,” Talbot said. “I took each moment as an opportunity to help our team take down La Salle.” Taking incentive from the defense, the offense again found its torrid scoring bursts behind Walls and sensational running back D’Andre Swift ‘17, who scored both of his touchdowns

in the second half to help secure the win. Swift finished with 158 yards on 22 carries (7.2 yards per rush attempt) and those two second half scores, but the rushing tandem of him and Walls left the Explorers

Student of the Week

Billy Boyle '16, number 88, works diligently on the football field and in the classroom.

By Aidan Donaher ‘16 This week’s student of the week is Billy Boyle ‘16. Boyle carries an impressive 3.73 GPA in treacherous classes. He and his teammates on the football team are often stretched for time with their schedule, making this GPA even more impressive. After being deeply nestled in the depth chart as a sophomore, Boyle has worked his way up and receives a good deal of

playing time at tight end. He plans to continue his academic and football career in college, and is considering Dickinson College and Gettysburg College. He believes these schools will be great fits for him, as he wants to have a career in medicine after college. When asked what is crucial to this week’s game against Father Judge, he emphasized that the team needs to “make sure we don’t let last week’s win dictate

how we perform this week.” “The success of the team going forward lies in our ability to trust in one another to get their job done,” he added. A very goal-oriented student and athlete, Boyle is also active in the community as he helps teach Sunday School with his mother. A very well rounded young man, Billy Boyle is this week’s student of the week.

Congratulations, Billy!

TMF (Cont'd) Hawks” continues to grow. They will stay involved through quarterly service opportunities, which will hone their leadership skills. Ms. Cook, the faculty coordinator between the Prep and the Foundation, explains that the course is beneficial for both students and veterans. Students receive the obvious benefit of learning leadership from people who have led others in very real situations, but the veterans also gain the chance to network among themselves and breed friendships. The course is not a military recruitment; rather, it serves to apply the Foundation’s slogan of “Honoring the fallen by challenging the living.” Students will be challenged, but it will result in better leaders for the school and for the community.

Cross Country Races Towards PCL By Ronan Egan ‘18 With the PCL Championship right around the corner, this year’s cross country team is looking extremely strong while heading into their main event. Led by captain Joe Pisacano ‘16, this year’s relatively youthful team posted a 25-6 record in a challenging division that includes two state-ranked teams in La Salle and Cardinal O’Hara. In a recent interview with the team’s captain, Pisacano highlighted what to expect this week at PCLs.
