Declin e of M u lt i-Spor t At h let es In previous years, St. Joe?s Prep had been full of students who participated in multiple sports throughout the school year. In more recent years however, the amount of students who play more than one sport has significantly declined. Playing multiple sports allows for students to develop special relationships with different groups of people, but this does come at the expense of having a tight schedule and little, if any free time. John Barbera ?17, who plays football and rows for the crew team, identified some of the positives when he claimed, ?Playing two sports is a really great way to connect with different groups of people and work

towards a common goal. You create a great sense of camaraderie and you build up a trust that?s really special and it is hard to replicate. Being able to do that with two groups of people, with crew and football, has really been a special thing for me.? When student-athletes spend so much time with their team, they obviously create special bonds with one another. Getting the opportunity to do that with two different groups of people is a special experience. Another positive of playing multiple sports is getting the opportunity to compete at such a high level in a couple different activities. Getting a varsity letter for multiple sports is a phenomenal

achievement, and especially when doing so in a league recognized around the country for their athletic accomplishments. While there are positives of participating in more than one sport, there are also many negatives. One of the issues that Barbera noted was how tough it is to leave the guys at the end of the season. Making the transition from seeing your teammates at practice every day to barely seeing them at all outside of school is not easy. Additionally, some sports are year-round, so it is hard to recover from lost time. Luckily, a lot of sports have a similar workout routine, so if the athletes are lifting and

running with one team, then that helps a lot when they make the transition to another sport. Managing time as a multi-sport athlete, however, is extremely difficult. Immediately after school, they have to go to practice, and if they have to meet with

a teacher, they miss a valuable part of drills or game preparation. Then, they have to go home and have to shower, eat dinner, do 2-3 hours of homework, and still manage to get enough sleep. This routine isn?t just for one season for these multi-sport

athletes, it?s for the entirety of the school year. Regarding the rigor of the schedules of multi-sport athletes, athletic director, Mr. Dennis Hart ?95, longtime Prep faculty member and former three-sport athlete Continued on Page 7.

something.?

Mr. Tony Braithwaite of the Prep class of 1989 has been a legendary part of this school?s lifeblood for quite some time now. Braithwaite is the essence of a lifelong Prepper; his mission to live out the Jesuit philosophy began as a Prep freshman and has continued to this very day.

This task of reenergizing, which has been done so effectively with Prep Drama, is again brought to Braithwaite -- this time, in terms of the Prep mission in its imposing entirety.

?The Prep was the the first place I felt outside my family that being smart and witty was not only accepted but loved,? Braithwaite says of his formative years, going on to mention how experiences like Cape & Sword and Kairos shaped who he became as a person. That person is someone who deeply loves the Prep, and so it is no surprise, then, that when the idea of having an emissary specifically for the mission of the school came to be, that Braithwaite was an early choice. Though Braithwaite is stepping into a new role as the Engagement Specialist, he has been part of the Prep faculty, in one way or another, for over twenty years. After spending a year in Los Angeles (which Braithwaite notes having hated from the beginning), he came home and interviewed for a position teaching freshman religion at the Prep. Not long after this, Father Keller, who was Principal at the time, tasked Braithwaite with revitalizing the Cape and Sword Drama Society. The goal was simple, if not extremely daunting: to make Prep Drama as renowned as Prep Football. Looking back on the work he has done with the program, and the fact that it is now held as the flagship activity of the school, Braithwaite?s mentality of ?coach? is evident. He notes, ?We work hard in Cape and Sword. The football and basketball teams get mad respect because they do good work. I think people respond to excellence, whether it?s on the court, on the field, or on the stage. Prep guys respect other Prep guys working their heart out for

?Tony is a Swiss Army Knife of talent,? says Mr. Howie Brown ?99, Director of Admissions at the Prep, ?His knowledge of St. Joe's Prep history, his love of Jesuit Education, his experience working a variety of special events, and his unmatched wit and humor make him an invaluable addition to not only the Marketing and Admission teams, but to the entire Prep community.? Brown, who is an alumnus of the Cape & Sword Drama Society like Braithwaite, had worked with him previously at Act II Playhouse, a local theater where Braithwaite is the Artistic Director. Mrs. Vander Vennet, Chief Marketing Officer at the Prep, echoed Brown?s sentiment about Braithwaite, highlighting his extreme love for the Prep and his boundless creativity as some of the most valued characteristics he brings to the Prep?s Marketing Team. The role which Braithwaite is taking

He will aid in creative brainstorming and planning for many events at the Prep, including the recent Open House and the President?s Dinner. Braithwaite will also continue to serve as the school?s go-to emcee for events like the Father-Son Breakfast and Stand Up for the Prep. Above all, his task is to ?serve in a variety of capacities -to benefit the entire Prep community,? and

possible. Braithwaite, who is a lifelong student of Jesuit philosophy, highlights a few of the things that he finds most important about Jesuit education outside of the classroom: ?It?s important to remember that mediocrity had no place in Ignatius?s world -- in other words, being boring is the greatest sin against the Holy Spirit.? Braithwaite praises the heartbeat of the Prep mission in places like the football and basketball teams, or the Mission and Ministry

well, and that ?every Prep student is able to have the full Prep experience,? something in which he believes very strongly. Of all these Jesuit mantras that affect Braithwaite?s philosophy about the school?s mission, one experience with a Jesuit priest seems to stand out. He notes that there was a priest named Fr. Bob Phillips, S.J., who was a member of the Board while Braithwaite was Student Council President. ?I was

speaking to the Board as President, and was being a little snarky about something or another. Father Phillips didn?t know me, but took the time to pull me aside afterward and say: don?t be glib,? Braithwaite remembers. Glib, the opposite of sincere, was the antithesis of how he wanted to sound, and he recalls being angry with Fr. Phillips for having said this. Looking back now, he notes that Fr. Phillips?s willingness to have a frank conversation with him, man-to-man, was exactly what he needed. Phillips recognized that ultimately it would be good for Braithwaite, as a human, to hear that message. This experience informs one of Braithwaite?s core philosophies: the Jesuit idea of being contemplative in action. ?It?s far easier for most adults in the world to not be in tune with teenagers? frequencies,? he says, ?I have found that it?s extremely important not only to care, but to act on the care.? It seems that this is what causes Braithwaite, who went to

Georgetown and has a successful career as a local actor and entertainer, to continue coming back to St. Joe?s Prep. What?s more, this philosophy endows him with a uniquely effective toolbox in energizing a group of students who want to do good work. ?I adore the Prep and deeply respect the aesthetic,? he notes, ?I?ve directed at the Kimmel Center, opened for Adam Sandler and David Spade, written and performed one man shows ? but the energy that Prep kids bring is unmatched and working with them beats all of those experiences, hands down.? The task of transplanting this teeming energy outside of places like the theater and the football field and into the everyday moments of every student?s experience is far from an easy one. However, no one could be more willing, more energized and better suited than Braithwaite, who has been one of the Prep?s favored sons for a very long time.

RFA (con t .) have a lot of interesting guitar hooks that I think separate us from other upcoming bands.? Christian: ?I think a lot of bands in Philly are a lot more punky or pop-punky. We are more old school.? In the lifespan of many bands, tours like this one have historically offered the band?s first big break. Usually, a band gains traction in their home city, playing smaller venues and releasing their first Demos and EPs. As they move into more sophisticated recordings and videos, they begin to play larger venues within the city and become recognized on Apple Music and Spotify.

RFA's Upcoming Fall Tour Dates Span Eight States in Just Two Weeks. is our life though. We wouldn?t be doing this if we didn?t think it?s possible and there?s nothing better than making music for people to enjoy. No better feeling.? RFA?s success with their most recent release, an EP entitled Something New From RFA, has springboarded them into their first ever National Tour. But their past releases are certainly not to be undermined. Their debut EP Just Don?t Turn the Lights On got some traction on bandcamp.com and among college students. Their subsequent EP Up Late in the Evening furthered their growth even more. However, their third

EP Freaking Out was arguably their breakout. I saw them in concert last year after this EP was released at the Trocadero Theater near Chinatown. From first hand experience, I can attest to the fact that these guys are excellent performers. They are super energetic and funny on stage, for a couple of songs McHale sported a hilarious baby mask while tearing away at his bass. The band also has professional-grade music videos for many songs including ?Teenage Love Song? and ?Freaking Out.? In an article for Rock on Philly, Cousart expands a little on how the band came to be. ?We formed sophomore year of high

school at the lunch table when we all found out we liked some of the same bands. We then started playing shows around the suburbs and began playing some original songs. Things started to change for us when we put out our first EP. People started to look at us as more than just a crappy high school cover band. We then started to play more and more frequently, recorded another EP then entered in a WXPN competition last August. We ended up winning some recording time so we used that to make our most recent EP.?

?When we first formed, it was just three of us and we were just like stupid children, we were literally like fourteen years old. And we didn?t have a name for the band for like the first three months we were together. So I was just looking around my room, just like naming...I don?t know... But then I looked outside and my dad had this cool sportscar so I was like ?Let?s be the Really Fast Automobiles.? But then we were like, ?no let?s just be RFA because Really Fast Automobiles is stupid.? And that?s what happened.?

Many may wonder what the inspiration for the band?s name was. Drummer Alec Powell ?14 explains it in-depth,

The guys talk a bit about separates them other bands of genre. Brendan:

That is where RFA is right now. Then comes that first national tour, that first moment where your quality as a band is put to the test without the cushion of hometown love. It is an

exciting time for RFA because they can now go out and show new audiences their slick take on classic rock, it is sure to impress. Erin Blewett, a writer for WXPN, published, ?If you haven?t yet heard Philly rockers RFA, try to imagine the Arctic Monkeys pre-cigarettes and leather jackets.? And it?s true. These guys deserve to be compared to inchoate versions of modern rock icons like the Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Killers, or Weezer. They get to the roots of what rock should be: four friends who start a band simply out of their love for music, and let it take them where it takes them. This groundbreaking tour will bring the guys to Boston, New York, Pittsburg, Canton, Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville, and Washington, D.C.

sophomores, and freshman can use it too.? It seems as though the game can not only provide a moment to unwind for the students, but it also can bring various students together. Luke Compton, the master behind the game system, has thought about bringing a game system of some type in since sophomore year. It started out with a gamepad and a controller and progressed into a TV and eight controllers. Luke said, ?I do my homework at home a lot more, so I could play during my free periods, because I used to only

do my homework during free periods.? It seems that a lot of other students were doing the same thing and agreed with Luke that it was nice to have a way to unwind during a stressful day, even if it is only for one period. However, the students were not the only ones to enjoy the game. Michael Sokolowski '08, an admissions counselor at The Prep, would occasionally play Smash Bros in college, and he had high praise for the seniors: ?It is a very communal environment, there is a healthy level of fun. I?ve actually seen very little bickering over

stupid things.? Dean Greene, Luke Compton, and Michael Sokolowski all seem to be in agreement that there are not any negatives of having the game in the mezzanine. Everyone seems to have fun while playing, and now that it has been moved, it is even more inclusive than before. Some members of the senior class were worried that it wouldn?t be as fun playing in the mezzanine. However, Luke says ?I like it better in the mezzanine than the senior lounge, because it is a little more quiet and more inclusive.?

Report : Proposal Process f or SJP Light Repl acement

The Prep plans on replacing lights in multi-purpose room, pool area, and around the exterior of the building in order to be more energy and cost efficient. By Ryan Bresl in '17 Recently, the Facilities Operations office of St. Joe?s Prep released an opportunity to companies to submit proposals to replace lighting fixtures and equipment in several key areas of the school. As a move towards better efficiency and reduced ecological impact, light fixtures and controls are to be exchanged in the pool area, the multipurpose room, and around the perimeter of the facility. Three companies responded to this opportunity; McGoldrick Electric, Mulhern Electric, and Synergy Electrical Sales. Of these three companies, two are offering to provide labor (McGoldrick and Mulhern), and one is offering to provide supplies (Synergy). In addition, only one company bid labor on the pool area and bathrooms (McGoldrick) and from the information provided, no companies bid on the exterior modifications, which makes it difficult to make an informed recommendation on the entire project. The quote submitted by Synergy Electric Sales covers both the pool area and multipurpose room, but not the outside of the Prep, for materials only. The total proposed cost for these materials is $36,589, which is allocated between $28,689 in lighting fixtures (Multipurpose Room: $14,144 & Pool Area: $14,545) and

$7,900 in controlling equipment (Multipurpose Room: $6,425 & Pool Area $1475). It has been confirmed with outside sources that this equipment is of high quality and is suitable for use in this project and is being supplied by a reputable company. This quote also came with a full complement of drawings, photometric graphs, and other computerized data which displays the optimal places to install and implement this equipment. With the proposed equipment properly installed, the new spaces would have footcandle light values that correspond to typical work environments, classrooms, and hallways. This range is anywhere from 20 to 100 footcandles. A footcandle is equal to the amount of light shed on a surface when a 1 lumen candle is held one foot away from a 1 foot by 1 foot surface. It is a measure of intensity of light (myinsulators.com). One question that could be raised against Synergy?s proposal is the recommendation of Lutron Energi Savr Node Control Panels equipped with both occupancy sensors and daylight sensors. Daylight sensors would only be useful in the pool area because it has a window. These sensors would be effectively useless in a massive space such as

the multipurpose room as it receives no natural light. Further research would be needed to determine if cost savings could be achieved by the elimination of daylight sensors from the Lutron Control package for the multipurpose room, but is recommended that these sensors are kept for the pool area system. All other equipment seemed to be appropriate for the setting in which it would be used. As the Synergy quote only includes material, the proposals submitted by Mulhern and McGoldrick will be reviewed in order to determine the best option for labor and installation, assuming that neither of these proposals include fixtures or control panels. As the Mulhern proposal did not specify which materials they would be charging the Prep for, the only materials included in these proposals are assumed to be basic electrical supplies such as piping, wiring, and conduits. This assumption is rooted in the fact that the Synergy estimation for the materials in the multipurpose room is $20,569, whereas the Mulhern materials charge is only $7,200. Also, the Mulhern proposal was 25% higher than the McGoldrick quote for what appears to be less work. The Mulhern quote includes the installation of 32 CREE CXB LED High Bay Fixtures, which

Synergy recommends, but McGoldrick is prepared to install four more lights for less money. It was also confusing to see a charge for engineering included with the labor costs in the Mulhern quote as the engineering process has already been completed by Synergy, who submitted that information with their proposal. The only work to be done by Mulhern is the removal of old fixtures and installation of new fixtures and controls. In terms of company history, it is also worth noting that Mulhern had to settle with the Philadelphia City Government after it unlawfully listed itself as a Philadelphia based company in order to be preferentially selected for contracting. The settlement, which cost Mulhern $109,700, was enacted after the Nutter administration discovered that the Mulhern offices were actually in Abington, PA not the Mayfair section of Philadelphia (Philly.com). In sum, the quote submitted by Mulhern, a company with a clouded record, covers only the multipurpose room light replacement for $35,000. The proposal submitted to the Prep by McGoldrick Electric covered both the pool area and the multipurpose room for replacement of lights and controls. The price quoted by McGoldrick was $28,107 for the multipurpose room, $25,721 for the pool

area, and $9,154 for several bathrooms and locker rooms totalling $62,982. McGoldrick?s price for the multipurpose room is 25% lower than Mulhern?s, with a savings of $7,393, and it includes all of the work that the Mulhern proposal included as well as the installation of four more CREE CXB LED High Bay Fixtures. The most important things to consider with this process are axiomatically the cost and environmental impact. The ?Smart Equipment Incentives? division of PECO also submitted an application for the school to take advantage of about $8,000 in discounts for the replacement of the fixtures and controls. For each piece of equipment replaced with a better, more efficient one, PECO offers rewards ranging from 14 cents to 50 dollars. With the proper equipment installed, the Prep would use about 15% of its previous energy consumption in the multipurpose room. Synergy estimates that the new system in the multipurpose room will pay for itself within 2.3 years as the average energy savings amount to approximately $9,200 per year. For the pool area, Synergy expects savings of only $2,064 per year, which equates to a 7.8 year return on investment. The Prep should confirm the details of both the McGoldrick and Synergy proposals as these are to be used

in conjunction each other.

with

For the cost associated with this project, it is recommended that the Prep select McGoldrick Electric over Mulhern, due to costs and reputation, to perform only the installation of new lighting and controls in the multipurpose room and Synergy Electric Sales to provide the materials for this project. It is unclear as to whether or not McGoldrick?s quote includes the cost of the materials required for the project and for their proposal to be seriously considered, the Prep should require a better definition of what McGoldrick?s project costs include. The benefit of the multipurpose room project means a reduction in energy usage at a rate of $0.5396 per kWh. The pool project is too expensive to justify these modifications with a reduction rate of $2.02 per kWh. The goal of these modifications is to make the Prep a more energy efficient facility in the most cost effective manner and the lighting in the multipurpose room is a good start. For now, the modification of the pool area lighting system is not financially sustainable for the environmental advances that would be made. Other options to consider for evaluation in the future include; solar panels, water reclamation, and geothermal heat.

Dear Colleagues, Students, Parents, Alumni, and Prep Nation, Thanksgiving is coming early this year! This year we have created another electronic list of items for our Thanksgiving ?wish-list?in order to make sure that we get the help our neighbors and friends need (one person last year enthusiastically referred to it as our ?wedding registry for Jesus?). For the first time ever, frozen turkeys are also on this list (no more need to haul them to the Prep)! Moreover, we are proud to offer some fresh-food options, and we also plan to have the frozen turkeys delivered directly to the Prep from this list. As many of you know very well, our Thanksgiving traditions have deep roots at the Prep. For over two decades, the Prep?s Thanksgiving Food Drive has served as a memorable representation of our community?s commitment to our neighbors while carrying out our Gospel?s challenge to serve others. A few details about this year?s drive make it special. But first, take a look at the inspiring generosity that our community demonstrated last year: -

Prep students and faculty delivered 181 turkeys, frozen pie crusts, and baskets of food to our neighbors in walking distance from the Gesu church. The generosity overflowed: the baskets alone contained an average 42.68 pounds of food (over 14,000 pounds of nonperishable food in the whole drive)! Families at St. Francis Inn, the Coalition against Hunger, St. Peter the Apostle School (on Girard Avenue), Visitation BVM (on Lehigh Avenue), and a handful of people from our own Prep community received food or baskets. Homeless men at Our Brother?s Place, an emergency shelter in North Philadelphia, received cases of fresh Amoroso bread. GrandFamily Resource Center at SOWN (a Philadelphia-area organization that provides innovative solutions so adults age fifty and over lead independent, healthy lives and age in place in their homes and communities) received baskets for grandparents who are currently raising their grandchildren.

We received positive feedback from our donors about the convenience of this type of giving. Generous individuals from all over the country - including California, New Mexico, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and at least 208 Pennsylvanians - donated over $30,000 worth of food to the Prep's week-long online drive - an event that broke records and set the digital world on fire! (And those are just the locations that we know about - 19.1% of the donations were anonymous). We wish to make it as easy as possible to give to this drive, so please contact us with any concerns or suggestions. Here is the link at YouGiveGoods, please click on it in order to donate: https:/ / yougivegoods.com/ products-5769 Any little bit helps, no donation is too small. Please consider also helping by spreading the word by sharing the YouGiveGoods link and using the # PrepGivesThanks2016 digital hashtag! Sincerely, Leo J. Vaccaro, ?05, Hurtado Food Pantry

Cat ch in g Up Wit h ASC By David McCabe '19 As the Prep community comes for the end of the first quarter, so much must be taken into consideration about the past two months. It is good to reflect on what has happened and that is exactly what the members of the Alumni Service Corps have done. The Alumni Service Corps (ASC) is a program at the Prep where alumni fresh

out of college come back to their alma mater and work here for a year. They live on the same block as the Jesuits, Father Swope S.J. and Father Surovick S.J. This year the Prep is glad to have back Kevin Dlugos '12, Andrew Staub '12, and Will Hartz '12 (pictured left to right) from the class of 2012. Now, let?s see what they as as they look back on their time over these past two

months of school and how it has been: What made you want to join the Alumni Service Corps? Dlugos: ?I wanted to join ASC because I plan to teach in the future, and didn't want to pass up the opportunity to learn the tips of the trade from some of my all-time favorite teachers.?

interested in doing a year of service after I finished my undergrad. For me, the Prep was a great place to do this because I believe that the Prep is a special place to attend, and there are many different things that I could be involved with throughout the year.? Staub: ?I wanted to give back to the school that gave me a home my four years here.?

Hartz: ?I wanted to join ASC because I was How have you adjusted to working at the Prep rather than attending school here? Dlugos: ?It hasn't been as weird as I feared. The biggest adjustment has been calling my former teachers by their first names. But for the most part, it's still the same old Prep.?

Fr om lef t t o r igh t , Dlu gos '12, St au b '12, an d Har t z '12.

Hartz: ?I love being back at Mother Prep. It wasn't too much of an adjustment to work here. The biggest thing was training myself to call everyone that I knew during my time as a student by their first name as opposed

to Mr and Mrs./ Ms. so-and-so.? Staub: ?The biggest difference is when i went to the Prep my focus was on how I can have fun and get all my work done, but when working, it's more about how to get students to know their stuff and have that experience that makes the Prep different. I have a good day when my 5th or 7th period guys understands what happened in class and the stage crew builds a new structure all while cracking jokes.? Where do you work in the Prep and are you involved in any extracurricular activities? Dlugos: ?I work in the History department alongside Ms. Quinter, mainly with her Sophomore US History class. I also help coach Mock Trial and plan to start a new club called the SJP Men's Project, designed to promote healthy masculinity and respectful treatment of women within the Prep

Q&A w it h M r s. Tar a M cFadden By Jon Erdy '17 Behind any thriving and bustling organization, are many terrific people working behind the scenes. In the case of administration, specifically in the President?s office, one needs to look no further than the first desk in Father Swope?s office to find one of these terrific people. Mrs. Tara McFadden is both Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Board of Trustees. She agreed to an interview and answered a few questions so that our community could get to know the real Mrs. McFadden. Jon Erdy: So how long have you been working at the Prep?

JE: Where were you before this? TM: I worked at St. Joseph?s University in the development office there. I was an event planner, we would create events: stewardship, donor, engagement, president, and alumni event, but I worked mostly with donors. JE: What have you noticed in your time here that is unique to the Prep? TM: The brotherhood is in the air, you feel it. It?s everything. It?s the first thing you feel when you walk in the door. It?s like they kind of spray it around like air-freshener and it?s like everyone in the building has a

connection. You see that through the students and the alumni and the colleagues that work here. It?s really quite unique. It?s here and when you go outside and you meet another ?Prep? person, you have an instant connection with them.

really great project because I was connected to the past. Our church is so beautiful and has so much history so it was nice to be a part of that. I also worked with a designer to create some posters that are now hanging in that foyer.

JE: What has been your favorite project in your time here?

JE: What?s a normal day in the life of Mrs. McFadden?

TM: In the President's office, I work on a lot of different projects. One of them that I really enjoyed was last spring when we were gearing up for the Baccalaureate mass, handling the painting of the vestibule of the Church of the Gesu. I didn?t literally paint it myself [laughter] but I worked with the painters and chose the colors and that was a

TM: I try to plan my day. In the beginning I would give myself ten things to do and then after a while I was here I realized that I was only getting to five of them so now I make a shorter to-do list for myself because things come up and the day gets derailed. So if Father [Swope] has a visitor I go and welcome the visitor. A normal day is always

very busy? a lot of people in and out, which is great. We do a lot of writing here, a lot of correspondence, a lot of people coming to visit Father so I need to be there to welcome and greet people. I also have my work with the trustees which is very intense and important. So a normal day, we run all day long and laugh a lot. JE: Alright, so this is the most important question by far. TM:

Uh

oh.

JE: Who would win in a fight: 10 duck sized horses or one horse-sized duck. TM: [long pause] I think the ten.

TM:

I

think

TM: I think there?s strength in numbers. [pause] That?s a pretty big question. [laughter] Yeah, I?m visualizing this, right? And I can see all the ten and if one of them goes down another can come and pick them up and rally and help them out. They can just keep pecking at it and they can win together. It?s like the unique brotherhood here. [laughter] You help your fellow man! JE: Awesome. Thank you Mrs. McFadden. TM: You are welcome.

JE: The ten duck-sized horses?

ASC (con t .) with a minor in Chemistry and Theater.? How has the Prep influenced you? Dlugos: ?The Prep has influenced how I understand my unique privileges and opportunities, specifically with education. When I was a student, I didn't acknowledge how lucky I was to attend a school like this, considering that plenty of kids who live in the shadows of the Gesu Church often don't have the same chance to let their academic, extracurricular, and

social gifts flourish. If more Prep students understand this, we'll be able to build a more cohesive notion of truly being men for others.? Hartz: ?The Prep has developed my values, my worldview, my empathy, and my interests. During my time at the Prep, I embraced being my own person.? Staub: ?As a student the Prep influenced me to appreciate when things are done well; as an ASC member it influences me to do my work to that high standard I set as a student.?

so.

JE: Any reasoning? What are you thinking?

Both teams were coming off of wins, Prep beating Father Judge 35-13 in a commanding offensive performance and La Salle narrowly edged out a 4-6 Roman Catholic team by a score of 17-16.

final score of 63-35.

To say St. Joe?s Prep dominated Lasalle on Saturday at Plymouth Whitemarsh would be an understatement. The Prep put up nine (yes, nine) touchdowns in an offensive effort that completely overwhelmed the Explorers defense and clinched a Philadelphia Catholic League Red division title with a

Seven of those touchdowns belonged to running back D'Andre Swift ?17 behind a stellar offensive line, who was coming off of an injury that had limited his playing time in the last few games. Swift carried for 275 yards and six touchdowns and accounted for 21 receiving yards and

another touchdown through the air. The other two touchdowns belonged to wide receiver Terrance Greene ?17 on a 51 reception from quarterback Marquez McCray ?18, and a 46 yard fumble return by defensive end Rayshad Wallace ?18. Running up scoreboards has been a recurring theme this year for the Hawks,

The Prep?s defense was looking to shut down La Salle?s offensive catalysts: seniors Tom LaMorte, who has thrown for 964 yards on the season, and Syaire Madden, who has rushed for 890 yards. After an early offensive blunder that returned the ball to the Explorers after the opening kickoff, Rayshad Wallace jumped on a botched handoff and was able to return the ball for a score. Later in the first quarter, Prep added two more touchdowns on a pair of D?Andre Swift runs. In the second quarter LaSalle

was able to answer with a thirteen-yard touchdown run of their own, but Prep would add two more scores before the half: an eleven yard run from D?Andre Swift and a 51-yard TD pass from McCray to Greene. (It was also at this time when the snack bar ran out of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches which left many students rooting for their beloved schools on an empty stomach.) During the second half, LaSalle was able to pull two touchdowns back on thirteen and one yard runs by Syaire Madden and Joe Burnham, respectively, bringing the score to a closer 35-21. Prep would then answer with two more D?Andre Swift touchdowns. The first, a 75-yard TD run and a second of 62 yards. LaSalle would respond with a phenomenal one handed grab by Brett Mallee off of a 15 yard throw from Tom LaMorte. In the fourth

quarter D?Andre Swift ran for yet another touchdown of 33 yards. In the late stages of the fourth quarter, La Salle running back Syaire Madden tacked on another 13-yard run for a score. Prep would cap the final impressive offensive performance of the game with a seven yard pass to D?Andre Swift, cementing the victory and the final score of 63-35. The Hawks of St. Joseph?s Prep improved to a 7-0 record with the victory on Saturday while the Explorers of LaSalle fell to a record of 5-3.Prep goes on to face Archbishop Ryan next week at Quick Stadium in Chester while LaSalle will face the Archbishop Wood Vikings at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in a contest that will determine the Catholic League Red Division runner up. After these games, district and state playoffs will begin.

Super-Teams: Taking t he Sport out of t he NBA? By Jacob DeAnnunt is ?19 On July 4th, 2016, Kevin Durant sent shock waves throughout the NBA after he announced his signing with the Golden State Warriors following their disappointing Finals loss. After bringing his team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, within one game of a Finals appearance almost no one expected Durant, an unrestricted free agent, to join forces with the team that sent him home a month earlier.

This begs the question: Are Super-Bad for the NBA?

The creation of super teams, including this Warriors team, hurts the NBA. The competition is essentially reduced to two teams vying for a championship, those teams being the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Every other team still is forced to play through the grueling 82 game season knowing that there is little to no chance of bringing home a title.

Even NBA commissioner Adam Silver agrees that formation of these teams is not fair; ?This notion of two super teams that it?s a huge television attraction ? I don?t think it?s good for the league. Just to be really clear. There?s no question when you aggregate a group of great players, they have a better chance of winning than many

other teams.?

own teams.

Most general managers predict a Warriors-Cavaliers matchup in the Finals for the third straight year, as 30 out of 32 chose these teams to make out it of their conference in the NBA.com poll. The only reason not all of them chose this matchup was because the general managers were not allowed to chose their

Everyone agrees that only two teams have a shot at the Larry O'Brien Trophy and that takes the fun out of the NBA. What?s the sense of watching and cheering for your team if you already basically know the outcome of regular season? It?s unfortunate that an already competition slighted NBA became even less competitive.

The NBA cannot do anything to prevent this but it takes away from the competitive spirit and unpredictableness of season. Who knows, maybe the Warriors will be remembered as the super team who amounted to nothing, but until then it?s safe to say they will win championships in the years to come.

With the addition of Durant, the Warriors are now being dubbed a ?super team,? as they are loaded with talent and now have the winners of the past three MVP awards on their roster. Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant are accompanied by Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, setting them up to be arguably one of the best offensive teams of all time.

Golden State was one win away from becoming back-to-back NBA Champions but with their huge offseason acquisition, they not only improved their roster but they decreased the competition. The Thunder proved that they could challenge the Warriors but without their prized superstar they no longer pose much of a threat. It seems almost unfair that the team who just the set the record for most wins in a season could add one of the best players in the league to their already stacked roster.

The Golden State Warriors, one of the so called "super-teams" that has formed in the NBA.

Cu bs Win NL Pen n an t For Fir st Tim e Sin ce '45 By Aidan O'Connor '17 For the first time since 1945, the Cubs have advanced to the World Series, and did so stylishly with a 5-0 win over the Dodgers in game six of Nation League Championship Series. This breaks the so called ?Curse of the Billy Goat? that has plagued the Cubs for the past 71 years. The ?curse? dates back to game four of the 1945 World Series. Billy Sianis, owner of the famous Billy Goat Tavern, was asked to leave the game because the smell of his pet goat was offending people. This is when he supposedly cursed the Cubs by saying: ?The Cubs ain?t gonna win no more!? Apparently Sianis?s power only lasts 71 years, because it is clear that the Cubs are going to the World Series. The Cubs, with a season record of 103-58, will be facing

off against the Cleveland Indians, who are 94-67. Celebration of the news of the Cubs reaching the World Series is not limited to Chicago. President Barack Obama even commented in a tweet: ?I'll say it: Holy Cow, @Cubs fans. Even this White Sox fan was happy to see Wrigley rocking last night. # FlyTheW?. The # FlyTheW alludes to the tradition dating back to the 1930s where a flag with a ?W? on it would be flown outside Wrigley Field whenever the Cubs had won. The tradition started during a time when it was the most efficient way to spread the news of a win, but still lasts today even in the era of smartphones. Recent Prep alumnus Jack Niekelski ?16 says: ?It's been a really amazing team to watch all season with so many versatile utility players

such as Javy Baez [and] Zobrist rotating through the in and out field and even pitcher Travis Wood making some phenomenal catches in left field. [You] have to give manager Joe Maddon much credit for orchestrating all of these lineup shifts and also keeping the team calm and poised throughout the season ? Baez has really stepped up in the postseason both offensively and defensively and then entire pitching staff was superb. I'm really looking forward to the WS? ? Tickets for this year?s World Series will be the most expensive ever in baseball?s history. The series, starting October 25th, has the possibility to run until November 2nd, the scheduled date for game seven. Fans can watch it live on Fox or stream it through MLB.tv online.

Pr ep Golf 's Season En ds at Region als By Nick Pal ermo '18 This year?s St. Joe?s Prep Golf Team, captained by Jack Mitchell ?17 and Andrew Gallagher ?18, fell in the Regional Championship to Nazareth Area High School by a score of 315-329. Although the team did not reach its ultimate goal of returning the state championship title to 17th and Girard, Gallagher expressed his enthusiasm with the team?s success this year, especially with the District Championship win. He explained, ?Although disappointed[with the Regional loss], we are happy with how we bounced back after a loss in the Catholic League Championship. After getting bested by the Explorers of La Salle for the Catholic League, we bounced back and beat them at Districts.? Although La Salle has won the majority of PCL championships for the past few years, Prep Golf has just pulled a three-peat in District XII. The Prep also has the accolade of being the only PCL to win the state title in the last three years.

after the District Championships. The Nazareth team had a little time to celebrate their big win, until they were off to Regionals. The Prep was heading north less than 24 hours after their last match, while Nazareth had three days of rest and a shorter trip to the course. With the Prep's deep roster of experienced golfers, Gallagher stood out in particular as he placed second individually in both the PCL and District XII championships, with a 72 and 74. Gallagher lost to a senior in the Catholic League, and a junior in Districts, therefore one of his top competitors will not be back to challenge him. The best thing about Gallagher?s great success is that he?ll be back next year, poised to build upon his personal successes and the team on a whole. Unfortunately, many of those experienced golfers that made the team so reliable this

year will be not be coming back. Five senior golfers will graduate in the Spring of 2017, leaving the team with one Philadelphia Catholic League Championship, three District XII championships, and one PIAA State Championship. Although they know next year will be difficult, Gallagher makes known that ?we look forward to the challenge.? So what can we expect from Coach Patrignoni, Andrew Gallagher, and the rest of the Prep Golf squad? That would be continued success. Maybe more, maybe less, but success will surely come from next year's Golf team. Over the last few years they have not only become a serious competitor in the PCL, but also in the state. As they continue to improve year to year, continuing their impressive upward trend, they look to make the Prep community proud as they have grown so accustomed to doing.

M u lt i-Spor t (con t .) here at the Prep, said, ?I actually found that I did better academically when I was in season. It sort of forced me to balance my time better, and I feel like some of our guys here now are the same way.? The grind of multiple, overlapping seasons may focus some, but limit others. Even with the year-round training and the hectic schedules that multi-sport athletes endure, they may experience a disadvantage in their pursuit of college scholarships by divvying up their time between their two or three teams. While they

remain very active, they may sacrifice the development of specific skills in their best sports. Additionally, for sports like basketball, hockey, and soccer, student-athletes play on club or AAU teams to hone their skills for that sport year-round, so they don?t have time to participate in anything else. Because of this, athletes tend to focus all of their attention on one sport, meaning they don?t join any other sports or clubs. Barbera addressed the issue as to why multi-sport athletes are in a decline,

mentioning, ?It?s tough to not to have an offseason. I practice 50 or 51 weeks out of the year, and it?s a really intense training for both sports. It?s also tough to take a step away from something and catch back up, since you miss entire parts of the season.? Hart also talked about the decline of these multi-sport athletes, saying that he has definitely noticed a difference in the amount of students engaging in more than one sport. He thinks that the competitive nature of all of the teams at The Prep dissuades players from

participating in multiple sports. A player may have more time to work all offseason to start for the team in the upcoming season, while another is practicing for a completely different sport. However, when asked if he would recommend students play multiple sports, he responded, ?I would highly encourage it, as long as they are able to make it work academically, socially, and physically, because I had wonderful experiences, and I?ve seen some of our guys have similar experiences.? He noted

that if he could go back, he wouldn?t have changed a thing about his involvement in a couple different sports, because some of his greatest memories stem from all three of the sports. Multi-sport athletes are scarce here at the Prep, which is a drastic difference from previous times. The apparent reason behind the drop in these athletes is that time management has become much greater of an issue and students are not able to focus on more than one sport year-round. But while there are negatives to playing a

few different sports, the camaraderie that comes with playing sports creates lifelong friendships, and building these special bonds with more than one group of people is a very special experience. While multi-sport athletes are becoming fewer in number, they are definitely worthy of admiration and respect as they juggle their athletic life with the rest of their Prep experience.

Claude Giroux (C), poised to take a faceoff.

Th e Or an ge an d Black Ret u r n To Th e Ice By Robbie Cal abro '19 The Philadelphia Flyers are coming off a very successful 2015-2016 season. While many experts had them finishing out of playoff contention, they snuck in due to some late-season heroics from rookie sensation, Shayne Gostisbehere and backup goaltender, Michal Neuvirth. The rookie defenseman shot energy into a lackluster performance, and even though he only played 64 games, was a finalist for the Calder (Rookie of the Year) trophy. Neuvirth was one of the best goalies in the final few games. Unfortunately, they were eliminated by the favored Washington Capitals in six games of the first round. While last year was supposed to be a rebuilding year, this is the year when many more rookies will be called up from the Phantoms in a push to make, and advance in, the playoffs. The Flyers? biggest strength this year is their offense. With league recognized names such as Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds, and Sean Couturier, it is expected to be their main focus.

The first line, consisting of Brayden Schenn (after his suspension is over), Giroux, and Simmonds, is a top five line in the league. According to Quanthockey.com, Giroux has the most points in the NHL since 2010 and though his points have declined over the past three years, he is still one of the most dynamic players in the game. Schenn and Simmonds both bring a hard-hitting, in-your-face style, perfectly complementing Giroux. The second line, probably Travis Konecny (rookie), Sean Couturier, and Jakub Voracek, is the ?x-factor? for this year. Konecny is one of the fastest players in the league, and he is unbelievably talented with the puck on his stick. After the first four games he?s been off to a hot start, and his play will progress even more as the season progresses. Couturier, another tough player who is loved by the fans, will look to extend upon a good season last year, totaling 39 points in just 63 games. If he can stay healthy, he might even garner some MVP consideration. Third,

Voracek, one of the most disappointing players last year after signing a whopping 8 year, $66 million contract, must rebound this year for this to be a successful line. The Flyers?third line is another great strength of theirs. In regard to other most other teams? third lines, the Flyers line of Michael Raffl, Pierre-Eduoard Bellemare, and Dale Weise stacks up very well. Raffl is a jack of all trades type of player; does everything well, but nothing great, while Bellemare and Weise are both capable at their respective positions. The fourth and final line of Chris VandeVelde, Boyd Gordon, and Matt Read actually has a fair amount of talent on it. Matt Read, an undrafted free agent signed in 2011, consistently has 20 goals a year, but his production has declined the past two years. He?s looking to have a bounceback year and seems to be on track for that after the first few games. The blue line is where the Flyers will struggle this year. While they have some good offensive defenders, such as Shayne

Gostisbehere and Mark Streit, actually defending will be a challenge at times. Ivan Provorov is one of the most exciting rookies to watch, and when Michael Del Zotto comes back from injury they will be improved drastically. Their first line, consisting of ?Ghost? and Andrew MacDonald, is a slightly better than average pairing. Ghost will provide the 2-way-player dynamic and MacDonald is average at best, although he did have a +/ - of 10 last year. The next line, run by Provorov and Streit could be their best line. Streit, the ex-Islander, provides great veteran leadership to the rookie. Both are fantastic two-way players; Provorov will likely need time to develop, however. The third and final line, which is comprised of Brandon Manning and Nick Schultz for the time being, is not a very good pairing. When MDZ returns from injury and Gudas returns from his 6 game suspension, they will most likely replace the awful pairing of Manning and Schultz. Michal Neuvirth and

Steve Mason are the two goalies. So far, they have been alternating, but by the trade deadline, one will be gone. Neuvirth had a better season last year, both in the regular season and playoffs in terms of GAA (Goals Against Average). Either one could have a better season, so it?s anybody?s guess as to who will be traded. The first four games of the 2016-17 season have been sloppy on both sides of the ice for the Flyers. The Power Play offense must be better; they are only at 17.7% (3/ 17). During the game against the Anaheim Ducks last Thursday, they had five Power Plays in the second period and only scored on one. In every game, they have gotten off the a very slow start. In the first period, the team has been outshot 43-28 and outscored 6-1. Provorov is off to a horrendous start. He is struggling with his skating, once falling down while by himself in the defensive zone, which led to a goal. His +/ - is a terrible -6; he must improve if he is expected to be a focal point for the defense.

It hasn?t all been bad however; Matt Read, surprisingly enough, is the team?s leading goal-scorer with four goals. Simmonds and Couturier follow with three goals apiece. Claude Giroux is tied for third in the league with five assists, and Konecny and Voracek are tied for ninth in the league with four assists. The goaltending has been decent, with Neuvirth and Mason splitting time as expected. The Flyers last year finished with a record of 41-27-14, totaling 96 points. They ended up as the 8-seed, beating the Bruins out for the final spot by three points and drawing the Caps in the first round. They lost to them in six games. This year, I predict for them to finish 44-22-16, totaling 97 points. This will easily position them in the playoffs, most likely as a top-6 seed. If the goalie gets hot, there is no telling how far they will get. Most likely there will be a first or second round exit, which for all intents and purposes is a successful season, and this will set them up nicely for some deeper playoff runs in the future.

The Wait f or Joel Embiid May Be Over, But The Wait f or Success Cont inues 76ers Fans, rejoice! The long awaited NBA debut of Joel Embiid is finally upon us. The Sixers enter the new NBA season with a solid, young core, but they still have many questions. ?The Process? continues in Philadelphia, as the Sixers still seek a guard to complement all the great young big men. Due to the many questions surrounding the Sixers, the only true way to break down the team and predict success is to look at the players on their roster. Let?s start off with the Sixers point guard situation. Many fans were angered by the trade made by mastermind Sam Hinke in February of 2015. The Sixers traded young guard, Michael Carter- Williams, for a Lakers first-round pick, which still hasn?t come to fruition. Ever since then, the Sixers have had a great number of point guards start for them. The trend will continue this season for the Sixers when newly acquired Sergio Rodriguez steps onto the court. Rodriguez was signed to a one year deal in the offseason by the Sixers. He looks to bring crafty playmaking skills to the young Sixers team, along with experience. At 30 years old, Rodriguez is one of the elder statesmen in the locker room. In Europe, Rodriguez also showed that he is a capable outside shooter, something this Sixers team desperately needs. The two backup point guards for the Sixers are second year player, TJ McConnell and veteran Jerryd Bayless. During his rookie year,

McConnell proved himself as a solid perimeter defender, and just enough of an offensive game to still be respected. Bayless, also signed in the offseason, enters the season a little banged up. Some may argue, that if he was healthy, he would be the starting point guard instead of Rodriguez. Bayless, a career journeyman, has proven himself as a high-end role player, with a plus outside shooting stroke.

Simmons is sidelined with a Jones Fracture until January at the earliest. Simmons has the makings to be a perennial all-star, but he has one major flaw in his game: his jump shot. If the jump shot gets straightened out, there is no reason why he won?t be remembered as a great 76ers player. Due to Simmons? injury, Robert Covington will open the season as the Sixers starter at the 3. Covington enters his third season with the Sixers as a proven role player, with above average defense and shooting.

The Sixers other position without a future centerpiece is shooting guard. Gerald Henderson will most likely open the season as the starter. Henderson is coming off a solid season for the TrailBlazers, and hopes to provide the same level of consistent, role player-type of minutes for the Sixers. He?s a veteran, with an alright outside shot looking to provide leadership to the young core. Henderson played high school basketball at nearby Episcopal Academy, before playing collegiately at Duke. The backup shooting guard is Nik Stauskas. Oh boy, Stauskas is the definition of inconsistent. He showed great potential when he came out of Michigan. He looked to be a promising shooter; that however, has not translated to the NBA. He is a career 32% shooter from deep, not exactly the percentage fans want to see as a labeled ?shooter?. Small Forward begins the area of strength for this young Sixers team. Of course, the position is headlined by athletic freak, prolific playmaker, and first overall pick, Ben Simmons. Unfortunately,

The Sixers currently have three other back up small forwards. Two of them, Hollis Thompson and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, could also see time at the shooting guard position. Thompson enters his fourth season in the NBA, all with the Sixers. He is mostly an energy scorer of the bench, with the capability to knock down threes with regularity. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, or TLC, was the 20th

overall pick in this years draft out of France. He has shown the potential to evolve into a plus perimeter defender, who can find crafty ways to score. Another small forward on the Sixers roster is the athletic Jerami Grant. Grant was your prototypical 2nd round draft pick when he was drafted by the Sixers back in 2014: athletic, but unpolished. His defense is very intriguing, but his shooting has been terrible. If he learns how to shoot, he could be a key piece in the Sixers rotation for years to come. Ah, finally the big men. The Sixers have been both praised and criticized for the young plethora of bigs they have to offer. At power forward, Dario Saric will make his NBA debut. Saric looks to be a stretch four, who can also provide crafty playmaking skills, and show off versatility on defense. The Sixers hope to see a little bit of everything out of the Croatian Sensation. Nerlens Noel could also be a starter at this position, but it looks like he will open up the

season injured. Noel is a prolific interior defender, and toward the end of last season, he showed glimpses of what his offensive game could turn into. A story to watch as the season unfolds, is whether he will choose to resign with the Sixers, as he has been rumored to be frustrated with how many players the Sixers have at his position. Another power forward, is the young Richaun Holmes. Holmes is a decent defender, who needs to improve his rebounding to get meaningful minutes this season. Joel Embiid! Joel ?The Process? Embiid will finally make his way onto a NBA court for the first time in his career. Along with his funny social media antics, Embiid has become a fan favorite with the teases he has provided pre game for the last two seasons. Through this preseason, Embiid has lived up to the hype. He?s scoring, rebounding, and has enjoyed a few monster blocks. The sky's the limit for Embiid.

Jahlil Okafor rounds out this preview. After leading Duke to a National Championship in his lone college season, he was drafted by the Sixers third overall. He dealt with a few off the court issues in his rookie season, but his stats were great. He has an advanced feel for scoring on the low block, and his complete offensive game has even been called ?generational?. The knocks on Okafor are his conditioning and defense. This offseason, he has slimmed down, and now we have to wait to see if his defense has also come around. He will enter the season a little banged up, only appearing for a brief stint in the last preseason game. The Sixers will look to improve with the roster that is rich in potential, but poor in experience. M r . Ken n ey, Tear Dow n Th is St at u e and shouldn?t immortally remain. Those against the moving of the statue believe he was a good man who helped this city more than he discriminated against the African American population.

By Michael Enright '18 A hot topic of controversy in Philadelphia over the last couple of months is whether or not the statue of Frank Rizzo, former mayor and police chief of Philadelphia, should be moved from in front of municipal hall. The people who want the statue moved claim that Rizzo was a racist

Personally, I believe that the statue should be moved because Rizzo represents a system built on racism

and discrimination; however, I don?t believe the statue should be destroyed but rather moved to a place of less prominence in the city of Philadelphia. The fact that we continue to display directly in front of such a place as municipal hall is not totally unlike the South Carolina State legislature showing the

Confederate flag in front of its state legislature. On to the first problem with the Frank Rizzo state: the lack of respect Frank Rizzo had for the African American population of Philadelphia. To be honest, there?s no real sugar coating it, Frank Rizzo was a racist. His iron fist over the city with the police force was seriously biased against the black population who were already struggling.

Throughout the 1960s, Rizzo was involved in several incidents where his police force unleashed unreasonable brutality over peaceful black protests and the Black Panthers. For example, in 1967, during a peaceful rally concerning the addition of black history into school curriculum, Rizzo entered the scene and has gone on record as saying, ?get their black asses.?

Protesters place a KKK hood over the statue in August to draw attention to Rizzo's actions while Chief of Police. By John Figge ?18

Lives Matter protests and the police brutality movement.

A protest has been started to take down a statue of former Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo, but the statue should stay up and not be taken down.

The group?s website claims that, ?We will no longer allow our taxes and other city resources to be used to erect and maintain monuments of white supremacist figures.? However, the statue was not erected with the city?s money, it was funded by the Frank L. Rizzo Memorial

The protest, started by the group Philly REAL (Racial, Economic, and Legal) Justice, was founded this August to take down the statue because of Rizzo?s past racism and brutality towards the black communities within Philadelphia. However, he was a divisive figure and drew both support and dissent from the Philadelphia community.

When the statue was first installed, there was little to no resistance by the community, but the protest happening now is thought to be a result of the rise of Black

Although the statue is now owned by the city and maintained with city funds, Frank Rizzo was a largely popular during his time as mayor, and Philly REAL Justice claims that, ?racist relationship towards Philadelphia's African-American community has always

been one of violence, devastation and despair.? But while he was mayor, Rizzo hired many black police officers and promoted them within the Philadelphia police force. Rizzo?s police force was 20 percent African American, one of the largest percentages in the U.S. at the time. The black community responded

Despite Rizzo being a racist, another serious problem with the Frank Rizzo statue is his location. If his statue was in the middle of a park or off in some small town square where he was from that would be alright, but the fact that it?s located in front of one of the most important buildings in Philadelphia raises a serious issue.

favorably, because Rizzo was giving them jobs, and Rizzo gained some support. Philly REAL Justice condemns the actions of Rizzo, especially the 1970 strip search and raid on a Black Panthers meeting while he was police chief. But the raid came after the Black Panthers had declared war on police officers nationwide, so his actions were not

As I said before, it?s like the confederate flag hanging outside the state legislating building in South Carolina. People can say whatever they want, but in the end they have a racist symbol flying high in front of one of the most important buildings in South Carolina. The Frank Rizzo statue is not different. It sits in a place that is far too important to be taken up by a symbol of racism and discrimination. In the end, on the subject of the statue of Frank Rizzo, I strongly believe that the city of Philadelphia should move it to a location of significantly less importance. I can?t refute that some of the things that Rizzo did truly helped the city of Philadelphia; however, the bad far outweighs the good as Rizzo exerted over the top brutality on the black population of Philadelphia in order to achieve these goals.

unprovoked. During a visit to the Prep, a representative of Philly REAL Justice, Megan Malachi, stated that we have the ability to revise history. If we revise every piece of history, nothing will go untouched. Every piece of history has two sides to it, and although Rizzo had many dissenters, he was supported by a majority of Philadelphians. The statue of Rizzo should not be taken down because his image is still one of divisiveness. There is dispute over some of his actions, but if he was largely supported while he was mayor and there was little opposition to the statue being put up in the first place, there should not be such a conflict over it today.

The statue was commissioned after Rizzo?s death in 1991, and now stands outside the Philadelphia Municipal Building, opposite City Hall. Philly REAL Justice proposes that once the statue is taken down, they replace it with a statue of an African American who has contributed to Philadelphia.

Committee, not the city of Philadelphia.

He claims that his men were being attacked, but the

resulting mayhem led to the serious beating of dozens of black students. And if you?re thinking this was only one incident, the fact of the matter is during the entirety of Rizzo?s reign of the city of Philadelphia, things like this weren?t uncommon. No one can deny that what Rizzo did for the city appeared beneficial from the outside looking in; however, on the streets of Philadelphia, the poor black community was having their faces pushed into the ground by Frank Rizzo and the police force.

In addition to the statue, the city also honors Rizzo with a mural in South Philly.

Philly REAL Justice proposes replacing the statue with one of an African American, but why couldn?t the Rizzo statue should stay, and other statues of African Americans be put up? There may be conflict and dispute over his actions as mayor, but those actions are left in the past. Moving forward should be what matters, instead of trying to revise the past.

Is Tr ick -or -Tr eat in g Saf e An ym or e? By Jack Thorel l ?19 Saturday September 24th, 10:45 pm: The Cornwall Borough Police Department received complaint about a suspicious person. It was one of many Pennsylvania had been getting recently; a clown was lurking around someone?s neighborhood late at night. The clown epidemic that took the world by storm was, all in all, unsuccessful. Not as a meme movement, where it excelled, but certainly as a crime movement. The clowns were found and stopped so frequently, because a clown stands

out like a sore thumb anywhere at almost any time. There is one time of year, however, when a clown costume and other suspicious actions won?t get you a visit from the police: Halloween. As kids we?re taught the basics of ?stranger danger?. As safety4kids.com puts it, ?Don?t go inside a stranger?s house or car. Don?t accept any presents or candy from strangers.? But "Stranger Danger" is a flawed system. Its entire premise is based on picturing overtly dangerous adults and

telling children to stay away from them. This clear distinction between safe and unsafe interactions between children and adults is blurred on a social holiday like Halloween. Halloween is about scaring people, including the young trick-or-treating kids. So even when an adult seems like the cartoonish evil villain kids have been taught to be wary of, they don?t think twice about the strangers because those suspicious things are probably just in the spirit of Halloween. Kids break all the stranger danger rules

when trick-or-treating. They enter a stranger?s house, where the homeowner could easily trap them, especially when many kids run ahead of their parents because they?re too excited to wait, or they trick or treat without an adult. The kids then accept candy from the strangers, something that could easily be tampered with. Although not many cases of tampered Halloween candies have been discovered over the years, mentalfloss.com does note a few. In 1984, a man put cyanide in pixie sticks? mostly to collect life insurance on his own family? but he did tamper with a few other sticks to cover his tracks. Only one person ate the poisoned stick however, because it was a pixie stick. You?d think someone with an elaborate plan such as his would have chosen a good, popular candy to poison but, luckily, he didn?t.

There have also been a few unsuccessful attempts to put razor blades in candy, however no one sustained any hospitalizing injuries from them. So it may not be the biggest threat to trick-or-treating kids, Clown costumes have been banned at the Prep this year due to safety concerns.

but tampered with candy is a possibility. And trick-or-treating isn?t the only dangerous way to celebrate Halloween. ?The most ideal place to murder someone would be a haunted house because no one would ever know that it?s actually someone in trouble and not another actor,? student David McCabe ?19 told me during our trek through the Eastern State Penitentiary Terror Behind the Walls. And although I tried hard to deny in whole inside of one, David is right about the ease with which actual crimes could be committed and passed off as staged performances in haunted houses or at any other Halloween themed activity. We see this leniency towards actions that would otherwise raise many eyebrows all throughout the Halloween season, even in our own Prep community. Dean Greene has done much to insure the safety of our students, banning clown costumes, masks, and weapon replicas from being a part of any senior?s costume, things that a trick-or-treater, or someone trying to pass for one, can wear on Halloween, but seniors

in costume are exempt from the one thing that I know makes me feel safe: ID badges. What is stopping a criminal with a baby face who could pass of as a high schooler from waltzing into the building pretending to be a senior in costume if he doesn?t have to wear proper identification? Halloween is the exception to every rule and societal perception of what is scary, even the ID badge rule, which we as students know all too well is enforced with the utmost diligence. Children-laws.com says that child abduction rates today are hard to calculate because the likelihood for each child is different based on all of the people in that child?s life. Kids today are more trusting than they used to be of strangers, thanks to counterproductive stranger danger policies, and kids are meeting many new people every Halloween, who, for even just a minute, are a part of their lives and therefore a factor in the possibility of their abduction. Halloween is a day when nothing scary stands out, which means trick-or-treating, and all of Halloween for that matter, is simply not safe anymore.

The Clinton Foundation is also infamous for worsening the scenario in Haiti after its devastating 2010 earthquake.

By Thomas Dint ino '19 If Hillary Clinton wins the election, she will be both the first female and first corrupt female president of the United States. A trip down memory lane will uncover a small portion of the Clinton family?s corruption. Corruption is synonymous with the Clinton Foundation,

which gives less than 10% of its income to charitable causes. The rest of the money covers miscellaneous fees, such as travel costs, which were $8.5 million in 2013. The main purpose of the Clinton Foundation is to allow the Clintons to cash in? big league? from donors for favors.

George Soros, a billionaire who tries to destabilize regions such as Russia through attacking local government, and a prominent funder of Black Lives Matter, has also received favors through the Clinton Foundation. He was generous enough to give the foundation over $500,000 in exchange for meetings

The Clinton Foundation chose Clayton Homes, a construction company owned by Warren Buffet, coincidentally a major donor to the Clintons, to build ?hurricane proof shelters? in Haiti: a contract that was supposed to be distributed through a UN bidding process. The shelters built were unsafe and exacerbated the crisis. The Clintons also gave $10 million in federal loans to InnoVida,

owned by Claudia Osorio (another Clinton donor). InnoVida did not supply documents that were required for such a job, but this was waived by the Clintons. The company did not build any homes, and it was found that Osorio spent the money on personal luxuries, earning him a 12 year prison term. The Clintons claim to have built schools in Haiti, when in reality they only donated money to preexisting schools for occasions such as Earth Day. The Clintons Foundation made a contract with Digicel, a phone service provider owned by Denis O?Brien, a close friend of the Clintons. This scheme made money off of U.S. taxpayers and Haitians for having

them pay for Digicel service when they used their phones. The biggest failure of the Clintons? in Haiti was the Caracol Industrial Park, a textile factory that Bill Clinton said would provide 100,000 jobs. This project failed by forcing farmers off of their land to build the facility, providing only 6,000 homes instead of the promised 25,000, creating only 5,000 jobs, and exporting little goods. Secretary Clinton also accuses Trump of being a warmonger, although she is the one threatening Russia, which bought 20% of U.S. uranium under her State Department, with military force because she thinks they were involved in exposing her corruption. Clinton Continued on Page 14.

Cr im in al (con t ). also calls for a no fly zone in Syria, which Russia considers an act of war. There have also been many mysterious deaths associated with scandals involving the Clintons. DNC staffer, Seth Rich was found shot in his back after having alleged involvement in the Wikileaks. Shawn Lucas, who argued in court that Debbie Wasserman Schultz rigged the election for Clinton, was found dead in his bathroom. John Ashe, a lawyer who knew ?too much? about the questionable actions of the Clintons, died after a barbell fell on his neck before he was scheduled to testify in court. The list goes on.

This is a troublesome statement because, if

FBI Director James Comey said that while she was extremely careless, he recommended that no charges should be filed against Clinton. He did remark that others in a similar situation to Secretary Clinton could receive punishment, further proving how the Clintons are above the law. Clinton?s foreign policy as Secretary of State has lead to the death of great Americans in Benghazi, despite her saying ?We did not lose a single American [in Libya].? Hillary Clinton says sexual assault accusers must be ?heard, believed, and supported.? She did not abide by this when she defended the rapist of 12 year old Kathy Shelton. She claimed that the 12 year old girl was ?emotionally unstable and had a

tendency to seek out older men and engage in? fantasizing.? Secretary Clinton also strays from her alleged support of the sexual assault accusers of her husband, Bill Clinton, who is arguably one of the worst sexual predators in politics. Some argue that it is not fair to drag Bill Clinton into Hillary?s candidacy, but Hillary did say that she would put Bill ?in charge of revitalizing the economy.?

have possibly gotten him expelled from the school. Bill allegedly had a twelve-year affair with Gennifer Flowers, who Hillary then called ?trailer-trash? and that she ?would crucify her.? Juanita Broaddrick, another woman who says she was raped by Bill Clinton, was allegedly threatened by Hillary at a fundraiser. Secretary Clinton has also been contradictory

for accepting donations from countries that deprive women of freedom. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Brunei have given around $30 million to the Clinton Foundation. Mrs. Clinton cannot claim to be supportive of women and LGBT rights, a position she has flip-flopped on, while being funded from countries that oppress women to the point that they can?t

drive and punish homosexuality with death. Hillary Clinton?s corrupt and hypocritical past should deter American voters from choosing her while at the polls on November 8th. If she does get elected, the United States will once again lack strong leadership yet and will be stuck with a Criminal-in-Chief for at least four years to come.

Hopefully he would do as good of a job as he did during his presidency with NAFTA and China?s entry into the WTO, both of which costed America hundreds of thousands of jobs. Since Hillary brought him into her candidacy, it is fair to question him. Bill Clinton has been accused of sexually assaulting many women, or as Hillary disgustingly refers to them, ?bimbos.? When Bill was studying at Oxford, he allegedly raped classmate Eileen Wellstone, which could

It is difficult to find out more about Secretary Clinton?s corruption because she deleted 33,000 subpoenaed emails, 22 of which were top secret. She claims she forgot being briefed that ?C? meant classified.

Tr u m p Un iver sit y Failed To Pass Legal Test By Liam Gibbon '18 Donald J. Trump is running for president on a platform of, among other things, his previous success as a business-man. Throughout his life, Trump has owned a

part of over 500 companies, many of which bear his name: Trump Steaks, the Miss Universe pageants, Trump Magazine, The New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League, and

Trump University. Each of the companies listed either no longer exist or, in the case of the Miss Universe pageants, no longer holds any affiliation with Trump. Trump claims to be a

savvy businessman, but it seems as though his projects tend to fail. One of Trump?s most apparent failures is Trump University LLC, which has also gone by the names of The Trump Wealth Institute

and The Trump Entrepreneur Initiative LLC. Trump University was never an accredited university or college. No grades were ever given, no college credit was ever conferred to

paying students, and no degrees of graduation were ever awarded. This ?University? was founded in 2004 and Trump owned 93% of the company. The ?academic? programs focused on real estate investing, and though the ?school? was mainly online, over 7600 tickets were sold so that ?students? could attend seminars, ranging in cost from between $10,000 to $35,000. It ceased operations in 2010. This corporation is currently under fire in the media and in many courtrooms for multiple reasons.

In an infomercial for Trump University in 2008, Trump claimed he oversaw the school?s curriculum and that the faculty would be ?hand-picked by me?. He testified in a 2012 deposition that he never had a part in selecting the instructors for the seminars or the online courses.

Trump's name has been synonymous with several failed business ventures, such as Trump Steaks or Trump University.

Trump University filed a counterclaim for defamation in 2010 for losses of over a million dollars, but was dismissed in 2014. In 2015 a judge ordered Trump University to reimburse Makaeff to $798,000. Later in 2015, Trump?s request for an injunction was granted, resulting in

the case?s current ongoing status. The second lawsuit was filed in 2013 in California by Art Cohen, alleging violations of the RICO statute, the law allowing leaders of a ?syndicate? to be tried for racketeering. The judge Hon. Gonzalo P. Curiel was named to oversee the case. Trump has publically called for the judge to recuse himself due to his Mexican heritage leading to ?animosity toward Mr. Trump and his views.?

These ?views? refers to an offensive comment Trump made early in his campaign, referring to Mexicans as ?rapists,[...] criminals,[...] and drug dealers.? However Trump?s legal team has not filed any formal motions asking for recusal which would, according to legal experts, ?lack merit and possibly be considered frivolous.? Trump has repeatedly referred to Curiel as a ?hater? and described him as ?Spanish? and ?Mexican? even though the judge was born in

Indiana. Trump University is an utter failure, and has been charged by some of the country?s top legal minds as corrupt and fraudulent. Trump is running his campaign based off his past record as a businessman. This clearly shows that he has failed hugely on at least one occasion. If this is any depiction of how Trump would run the country, how can any logical person still support him?

We?re more than a month into the school year, and many sports and activities are already in full swing. Amongst these extracurriculars lies the ever important Prep band, a constant hallmark of the Prep community.

The student tasked with choosing these songs, Chris Rathke ?17, takes this process very seriously. ?The songs we were playing were getting old so I felt that we needed to make new ones,? said Chris, ?The key is picking songs that are new enough that people

The talent and enthusiasm of the Prep band has always been something of serious distinction, and the group is looking to make the 2016-2017 school year one to remember.

The band is perhaps most renowned for its work during the football games. This year, they are making another breakthrough in that new songs are being performed

Together, with band director Matthew Schwartz ?02, Chris has transposed some new fan favorites, and the rest of the musicians have taken these songs in stride. Already the band has begun to play Cascada?s ?Everytime We Touch,? R Kelly?s ?Ignition Remix,? and Shakira?s ?Hips Don?t Lie.?

Fans of the old songs have no need to worry. Even though the band will continue pushing out new songs for each game, old classics like AWOLNATION'S ?Sail? and Schwartz?s own ?Funk Jam? will continue to be played in conjunction. Hopefully the excellence of the Prep band with its new masterpieces can help propel the football program to yet another

dazzling state championship run. Those who aren?t the most earnest of sports fans can still observe the ability of the ensemble at a variety of other school sponsored events. They often play during masses, pep rallies, open houses, and dinners hosted by the Prep every year. of

The most noteworthy these are many

events hosted purely for the showcasing of the Prep musical program. Throughout the year, there are a few of these spectacular events: the winter concert, which focuses on Christmas music, and the spring concert. Here, one is able to observe the Prep band at its best. The medley?s and pieces have been perfected, and any real music fan in the Prep community would be remiss to miss it. The musicians are firing on all cylinders to make sure all of these performances go off without a hitch.

Any veteran of the Prep knows that the band hosts a variety of events to quench the musical cravings of anyone who respects quality rhythms, top tier melody, and superior bass lines. Video Game Review NBA 2K17 By Nichol as Mat t era '19 Well 2K, you?ve made another great NBA video game. Every video game that Ronnie2K, the CEO of the 2K studios, produces has its flaws, but first let's celebrate the good things that 2K decided to integrate this year. First we have My Career, a game mode in which the user can create a character and play through an NBA career. The My Career mode has finally brought back continuous cut scenes throughout the career. The user once again starts their career

looking at their high school highlight reel, including a clip of their player dabbing (which made me cringe a little bit). After their highlight reel, the user moves on to choosing which college they would like to attend.

are very cool including the opportunity for you to check text messages and hang out with other NBA players. Branching off of My Career there is one of the most popular modes in the game, MyPark. MyPark is basically pickup basketball online, where you can pit your own career players against those of other users.

After college they are given a call from Coach K who asks them to play in the Olympics, which is one of the coolest thing 2K has ever done. Once the user gets drafted, they get paired up with their best friend and partner Justice Young, played by Michael B. Jordan.

MyPark is once again the best mode in 2K because there really isn?t any glitches with gameplay. The only thing that can be frustrating is the overpoweredness of 3 point shooting centers.

As you move through your career you get many cut scenes that

James Harden of the Rockets looks to cross-over Brandon Knight using the new dribble mechanics in NBA 2K17.

Other than that My Park is a great feature. Now for another very controversial game mode, MyTeam. This mode consists of collecting player cards and making a team that has never been assembled. The user gets these players through rewards and opening card packs. The rewards this year are much better than in years past. They will give you emerald and sapphire card packs instead of golds like last year. There is a whole new card design which I think is very cool. Along with the design there is also a brand new card spectrum which includes bronzes, silvers, golds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies, amethysts, diamonds, and pink diamonds. Honestly the new cards are better because it makes you feel like you're pulling better cards. For example, when you pull an emerald you pull someone like Kyrie Irving, who is one the best players in the

NBA, but he is considered an 81 overall in the game. Pulling these types of players is a lot more frequent which makes more players buy packs. Because more players want to buy packs they have to buy coins with real money, so this year 2K raised the pack prices almost double, but instead of 10 packs you get 20. What they are saying is if you pay them money you will have a great team. That is the worst part of the mode because the more money the user spends the more their team will win, forcing the players who don?t buy coins, like me, to not win as many games against the overpowered teams. 2K games in years past have had a glitch where if you get connected in a game with someone who leaves or turns off their console, you automatically get a loss for that game. 2k17 has this same glitch, which is very annoying for someone who has a do or die game for their

team. Finally I just want to explain the new gameplay features. They almost redesigned the dribble moves and shooting. For dribbling the user can no longer just tap a button and get that player's signature dribble size up, but instead has to press a series of button to unlock the size up. Because it is a lot harder the game rewards you with a better chance of beating the defender. The last major change they made this year is the new shot meter. Instead of released the shoot button or pro stick when the bar is in the middle, the user releases when the bar is at the end. This is a lot easier for people who haven?t played to understand. Overall, I think that NBA 2K17 is a great game and much better from the past 2 games, so if you are looking for a game for the NBA season I suggest buying NBA 2K17.

Cookie?s Rapping: A Lit t l e Crumby Many Prep students are familiar of young, up-and-coming rappers, such as Lil Yachty or Chance the Rapper. A lot of Prep students would also recognize Daniel Curtis Lee. They would recognize him as Simon Nelson ?Cookie? Cook from the hit early 2000s Nickelodeon show Ned?s Declassified School Survival Guide instead of the rapper Dan-D or Saint Maurice. On, ?Ned?s Declassified School Survival Guide?, a modern marvel, Lee made a name for himself by playing one of the most notable characters, Cookie. When the show ended in 2007 after only its third season, Lee seemingly disappeared. Lee?s rap career started in 2009 with short YouTube videos of him simply rapping with friends under the stage name Dan-D. These were by no means popular or good. They were nothing serious, just fun. Then Lee decided to be a little more serious about his rap career.

In 2012, Lee starts to drop singles on YouTube, these have actual titles and structure. Lee also decided to change his stage name to ?Saint Maurice?, for a reason which is unknown. These are indubitably not an improvement upon his previous works, but gained popularity. The most popular video, ?Laughin? feat. Mdot, has a total over one hundred thousand views on YouTube.

were very popular, all gaining over one hundred plays. He also released his first official mixtape, DUI Mixtape, on SoundCloud; this was moderately successful, with all of the songs reaching fifteen thousand plays.

The most popular, ?Oh Oh Oh?, reached one hundred thousand plays on SoundCloud. This, however, could

Lee has had moderate success as a rapper, which can be attributed to his previous fame as

an actor. His music is not nearly as good as his acting, which is not very good either. It is surprising how popular his music has become. A few Prep students listened to a bit of Lee?s music, John Figge ?18 responded, ?This is not the Cookie I know and love, but I guess that?s just how the cookie crumbles,? and Nate Coulibaly ?18 commented,

?Unfortunately, Cookie didn?t fortune?.

This gain in popularity gave Lee the opportunity to collaborate with Fetty Wap, who was featured on the song ?Check?; this song was fairly popular with over three million plays on SoundCloud. He continued to release various singles until 2015. He was also featured on a few songs from the Disney XD show ?Zeke and Luther?, which were somehow worse than his rapping. In 2015, Lee released a few singles on SoundCloud, which

All in all there have been a few songs that have been promising, but they, like all of his songs, have been ridiculously autotuned. If Daniel Curtis Lee wants to make it big as a rapper, he is going to have to stop autotuning his songs, and actually be talented.

Terror St rikes t he Maguire Science Wing wit h Disappearance of Chess Board As all Prep students with a science class have probably noticed, the largest tragedy since the fire of ?66 has recently forsaken 3rd floor Villager Hall. The chess board we all came to know and love has mysteriously vanished without a trace. Now, I know you might think you?re reading the back cover of an Agatha Christie novel, but no, this disaster happened in our own school under our own watch. Dave McCabe ?19 was quoted saying, ?It?s a travesty, it?s a sham, it?s a mockery! It?s a traveshamockery!? And many students feel the same way. The chess board became a staple of the science floor last year when it was introduced by Mr. Gonzalez for use by students and the chess club. Liam Scott ?17 broke into tears when I brought up the subject, he said, ?One moment, you rely on it for your unexpected

board-game needs, and the next moment? poof. Like it never even existed.? I set out to get to the bottom of this mystery and try to provide closure to the students hurt by this catastrophe. My quest started near the scene of the crime with one of those students. Scott Hibbs ?19 has a locker mere feet from the now empty corner of the hallway. ?It saddens me a lot because last year it just gave everyone joy. Now no one has joy. I believe Sage is behind this.? After he wildly and wrongly accused the food provider, he suggested I ask a science teacher for a witness statement. In the cafeteria a few minutes later I was able to catch up with Mr. Murphy of the Science Department for his word on the subject. He gave me a key piece of information: a clearer time-window for the disappearance by telling me, ?I?ve seen it in October. Definitely. It hasn?t been long

I entered this investigation with the hope of exposing the crime of the disappearing game board, but it seems a new crime has been uncovered. The true crime in this tale is that of students who could not show respect to a game

since it left.? The Dean?s office had no comment on the subject. I then got to talk to our faithful security guard, Sean, also one of the few people in the building with access to security footage. He told me he ?didn?t see anything unusual.? He then suggested I talk to Mr. Jose Gonzalez, whose office is right next to scene in question.

made for respect. The breaking of pieces and the trash-talking words were the true thieves of the chess board. If the students wish to regain their beloved chess board and return it to its rightful place on the third floor, we must

only prove that we can handle it as Prep Men taught in respect for respect. Let?s bring the chess board back, boys. We can do it, I know we can. And when it?s back, let?s try to keep it there.

As the moderator of the chess club and the owner of an office just yards from the scene of the crime, he seemed like the most qualified person in the building to answer questions on the subject. I asked where he thought the chess board went, and he put the mystery to rest then and there. He told me that he had taken it. He had put it there for the school to use as gentleman. He intended the game of wit and strategy to be played with respect and esteem. His expectations were not met by the students.

Meme of t he Week: PSAT Edit ion By Simon WIl l iams '18 Ah yes, the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or as it is commonly known, the PSAT. We all have come to know and love this glorious standardized test because, why wouldn?t you? Bubble sheets and math sections you can?t use a calculator on are my two favorite ways to spend a Wednesday! While the College Board and National Merit Corporation always seem to come up with fun, little tales of action and adventure, the most wild experience of the PSATs has most recently come after the test is taken and each teacher finishes their exam elegies. Students have stormed the internet to poke fun of the test despite the famous declaration that such act is not permitted. This year?s contenders for best PSAT meme are some pretty legitimate heavyweights.

All in all, the PSATs provided the premier experience for getting prepared for the actual SAT. Students are forced to practice bubble-filling skills, and only stretch during controlled five minute periods. But more importantly, we all encountered the divine experience of the meme.

Here, Spongebob is used to describe some hot button PSAT topics: Kodak cameras, dolphins, (indirectly) dabbing, and stickmen.

Ali vs Frazier. Bird vs Magic. Trump vs Clinton. Bloods vs Crips. These legendary bouts have nothing on the marine wildlife as described by the fantastic authors of the test.

The ever popular ?yeah boi? video expresses the nation?s overwhelming support of Aurora del Valle following her acceptance as an apprentice to photographer Don Juan Ribero.

A big time favorite story this year was of New York subway announcers. Yup, the computers who tell you how late your subway is. As meaningless as this may seem, there?s a bit of a fandom growing and this is a good example.

Remember that agreement we all signed saying we wouldn?t talk about the test?

From livememe.com

2.75 people per household isn?t the practical family alignment, but according to the PSATs, it?s reasonable.

There even is a contingent of the meme community that would like to capitalize off of the success.

Edit orial s Let t ers t o t he Edit ors: Fr. John Swope '72, S.J. The article by Mac Riga '17 about Miller Jaeger '17 and his globetrotting (Vol.42, no.III) brought back memories of my trip to Rome in April 1972 with Mr. Harry Bender. Mac points to one kind of Prep international exchange: cultural immersion. So far, Mrs. Watson has made great strides in the development of our international programs. Very soon, for French, German, Spanish and Chinese language students, the Prep is likely to be involved in a short (7-10 days) cultural experience as well as a long (4 to 6 weeks) cultural immersion. The short trip would have Prep chaperones. The longer ones, organized in collaboration with families at the host Jesuit school in Europe, would have our students staying with families. And, of course, these trips require no Prep chaperones, because our students are with their host families. International exchanges with China would be organized slightly differently. Going forward, student selection of a language will be driven in large part by the faculty taking the lead in creating both short cultural experiences and longer cultural immersion trips in that language. Let's remember that "the Prep is our school, and the world is our campus". -Fr. John Swope, S.J.

Mr. Scot t R. Mul l en '99 Good afternoon Liam [Grugan '19], I enjoyed your editorial in the latest edition of the Hawkeye, especially your final paragraph. As an alumnus myself, I have observed a certain "factionalization" among the student body here at the Prep. We must look out for each other here, and support one another. I challenge you to live-up to what you wrote in your article. Perhaps your example will inspire others to do the same thing.

Have a good afternoon. Mr. Mullen

Mr. Leo Vaccaro '05 I read with great interest Mr. David McCabe?s opinion piece calling for the abolition of Columbus Day in the last Hawkeye issue (Oct. 13). I was particularly captivated by the quotes from my colleague Mr. Dino Pinto because he and I have some shared the experiences: we have both lived on an American Indian Reservation (I lived on the Navajo Reservation for a year), and we also both have Italian surnames. I do agree with many of the points that were mentioned by Misters McCabe and Pinto ? including that Columbus was not a particularly good man by any contemporary evaluation, and that American Indians ought not to suffer insult in their own country because we honor this one cruel figure. On the other hand, I question whether it is wise (as many states and cities are now doing) to hand Columbus Day from one ?identity politic?to another. Simply put, why should we have to pick between insulting Native Americans and honoring Italian Americans when our country belongs to those groups and many more? My approach to a solution: teachers and students might be interested in investigating the Zinn Education Project?s ?Abolish Columbus Day? initiative (available electronically at www.zinnedproject.org/ ABOLISH). Among other things, this project named 12 different Italian Americans who they think should be honored instead of Columbus on October 12th, including the activist Angela Bambace and the artist Ralph Fasanella. I would rather see Americans pick a worthier candidate than witness the destruction of the opportunity to celebrate all that Italian-Americans have done to make this country great.

From t he Edit ing St af f : Hawkeye Edit ors Endorse Candidat e There comes a time every four years when the people of the United States have to elect, or reelect, a person to lead the nation. As seen in this election, young voters play an important role in who the president will be. While many of the members of The Hawkeye?s editing staff cannot yet vote, it is interesting to see where their opinions lie. Much like the nation, the support within the editing staff is split, some leaning toward Hillary Clinton, others leaning toward Donald Trump, and some even abstaining from endorsing a candidate all together. On one end, Features Editor Marco Sammartino ?18 is a Trump supporter. He says, ?He [Trump] is not scared to speak his

mind and stand for what he believes in, which are both admirable traits of any leader. He certainly is not perfect, and may offend people with what he says, but credit has to be given to the way he has stuck to his guns throughout the election.? On the other end of the spectrum, News Editor Matt Phillips ?18 explains why he stands with Hillary: ?Most of her policies are in agreement with my views on the world, and I believe very strongly in both her temperament and ability to forge a path forward in Washington.? Furthermore, Editor-in-Chief Aidan O?Connor ?17 says, ?To me there is a clear lesser of two evils. Electing Trump is undoing years of

However, there are many people who fall for neither, such as Sports Editor Matt Brennan ?18. He says, ?In this presidential election, I am endorsing none of the candidates, because I feel that none of them can effectively run our country in these challenging times.? He later clarifies that he does not like any candidate, especially the third party candidates. All things considered, The Hawkeye, by way of vote, has chosen to endorse Hillary Clinton for president,. The tally being 4 votes for Hillary, 2 votes for Trump, 0 votes for Gary Johnson, 0 votes for Jill Stein, and 2 abstaining.

Let t er Fr om Th e Edit or s Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Administration, The Hawkeye school newspaper would like to reach out to you all in order to encourage you to provide feedback and support for our little newspaper. Specifically, we were all hoping that students, teachers, and staff would consider penning an occasional "Letter to the Editor" which could be published in any issue during the year.

Letters to the editor can touch on these topics and more: -Do you support a certain policy for our school community? -Did you particularly like an article that was published in our last issue? -Was there an article that you disagreed with and why? -Did you find an error that you would like to see corrected?

These should not be much longer than 120 words; consider some of the recent Letters to the Editors in this issue.

You can send these letters via email to moderator Leo Vaccaro '05, the Editors-in-Chief Jon Erdy '17 and Aidan O'Connor '17, or Editorial Director John Kromchad '17.

Would you like to see an electronic color version of the last Hawkeye? All issues are posted online: https:/ / issuu.com/ thehawkeye6/ docs/ issue_3__1_

Thank you for your continued support of the Hawkeye, Sincerely,

Mr. Leo Vaccaro
