Peter and the Starcatcher Hit s Prep Theat er Friday By Mac Riga '17 and Liam Scot t '17

tomorrow, 11th.

When Mr. Tony Braithwaite took a group of Prep students to see Peter and the Starcatcher in New York in the summer of 2013, he said then and there that he ?could not wait to put it on the Prep stage.? In the years since then, it has been referred to as the perfect example of a ?Prep? show - a show that displays what the Prep is all about. It?s message emphasizes teamwork, youth, brotherhood, and, like every Cape and Sword show, humor.

Auditions were held in early September, and the cast and crew has been hard at work building the set and rehearsing the show ever since. ?It?s been an exciting and fun process,? says Matt

Braithwaite and the rest of the Cape and Sword program were ecstatic to receive the rights to put on the show in Fall of 2016. With a set designed by Joe Binck ?11 Andrew Staub ?12 and a cast ranging from freshmen to seniors, including Claire Montgomery ?17 (John W. Hallahan High School), Starcatcher is ready to open

when Mac Riga?s character Black Stache mockingly yells ?And I bet your milkshake brings all the boys to the yard!?

And while the plot of the show in a prequel to Peter Pan, it is purposefully layered with anachronisms, like

The Prep?s production is also stirring up attention in the Broadway community. On

Wednesday, Rick Holmes, the original Lord Leonard Aster who went on to play Black Stache, came to visit the cast. Besides being in the original cast of Starcatcher, Holmes has been in 12 Broadway shows, including Cabaret,

performed at the Prep in 2014. Holmes is also a Philadelphia native and graduate of St. Denis and the Haverford School. Out of the kindness of his heart, he took an afternoon away from the bustle of New York to come and speak to the cast and preview a couple of scenes. Celebrated Cape and Sword alumnus Michael Zabel ?96 had seen Starcatcher in New York when Holmes was playing Black Stache, ?I?ve been seeing theater for many many years in both New York and Philadelphia and Rick Holmes? performance of Black Stache was one of the best things I?ve seen on any stage.? ?This show makes the audience privy to every detail about how the boy we all know and love came to be an undying symbol of youth who lived on an Continued on page 2.

If Not Me, Then Who: Travis Manion's Last ing Legacy By Nat han Coul ibal y ?18 In the summer of 2014, all the students at the Prep were assigned to read The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers, a novel that elucidated the realities of what it is like to be a soldier

overseas. During a school-wide presentation on the book, Ms. Cook took to the podium and introduced Ryan Manion, the sister of the fallen soldier, Travis Manion, and the creator of the Travis Manion Foundation.

Starting that year, the Travis Manion Foundation Leadership program was introduced at the Prep and gave an opportunity for sophomores and juniors to meet army veterans and participate in a nine week program, geared

to unveil and strengthen leadership qualities in its participants. Each week a different motto, which encompassed the mission of the day, was presented to the students and aided them in both breaking down preconceived

notions of what it is to be a leader and developing leaderships qualities in themselves. The students are not given a complete breakdown of what exactly the course is, and that simply adds to the experience. No student knows exactly what they are getting themselves into, but every single one of them walks away with powerful knowledge that will aid them in the future. The Travis Manion Foundation Leadership program we have at the Prep is actually the first of its kind in the country. This ?experiment? was tried out at the Prep and was able to plant its roots in the Prep community fairly quickly with the help of its moderator, Ms. Susan Cook of the English Department. She was also a

fundamental piece in the creation of this new program. She reached out to the foundation in 2014 after the English department chose The Yellow Birds as its summer reading novel. Since then, she has garnered an overwhelming amount of interest in the club and has recruited some of her own students into the program. Ms. Cook has been the course?s moderator since its nascence and when asked why she chose to take the position, she said ?I have a big place in my heart for veterans of our country and I possess a deep appreciation for the commitment they make to protect our democratic ideals and our nation.? Thanks to Ms. Cook and the Travis Manion Foundation?s efforts, veterans were able to Continued on page 5.

2 | News island. It explains why his nemesis is a one-handed pirate with a hook and why his best friend is a pixie. It even explains how he got the name Peter Pan. But more importantly, the show is a fun and hilarious representation of the serious importance of youthful wonder and why it is vital to live as ?you-singular in the context of you-plural,?? says Liam Scott, a senior playing the role of Boy/ Peter. Peter and the Starcatcher will feature only one female cast member, similar to other shows performed on the Prep stage including The Fantasticks (Winter 1999), Mister Roberts (Fall 2006), A Few Good Men (Fall 2011), and Kennedy?s Crisis: 13 Days in October (Fall 2015). The roll is filled by Claire Montgomery, a senior at Hallahan, who has appeared in several other Cape and Sword Productions including Little Me (Fall 2014),

Starcatcher (cont .) Me and My Girl (Spring 2015), and Curtains (2016). Michaela Zammuto, also a senior at Hallahan, has been involved behind the scenes as Assistant Costume Manager and a member of Run Crew.

Last Friday, Braithwaite, Staub, Brian Jones ?17, Mac Riga ?17, and Liam Scott ?17 went to Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C to see their production of Peter and the Starcatcher. ?I had a lot of fun

supporting my fellow Jesuit brothers. It was so crazy to see the differences between our two productions. One, for instance, was that my part was played by a girl,? recounts Jones. In addition to Gonzaga, Scranton Prep and Cristo Rey Philadelphia will be

coming to support Cape and Sword by attending the show. As a source of inspiration, the cast and crew of Starcatcher took a trip to New York to see the new stage adaptation of Dead Poet?s Society.

Afterward the cast met Jason Sudeikis, who played Keating in the show (the part portrayed by Robin Williams in the movie). Upon conversing with Sudeikis at length after the show, he informed the cast that he attended Rockhurst Jesuit High School in Kansas City. Because of this, he was very pleased to learn that we attended a Jesuit all-boys school in Philadelphia. Sudeikis had valuable insight to share about his own show process and expressed gratitude at the enthusiasm of the Prep group in the audience. ?This is only our fifth performance and you guys were our best audience so far,? the former SNL star commented.

SEPTA St rike Hal t s Cit y By Ronan Egan '18 Beginning on Tuesday November 1, hundreds of SEPTA employees began to strike throughout both the city and suburbs. The strike shut down all city bus lines and subways, with only the regional rail and a few suburban buses still going. The strike effectively made its point, as stations were closed down and trains coming to and leaving the city arrived hours late. On the first day alone, Suburban Station was forced to

shut down all but two of their tracks, sending the whole place into a frenzy. After the first day, many people decided to drive into the city for work or school instead of taking the train, which made traffic a complete mess during rush hour. As for the reasons of the strike itself, the members of Transportation Workers Union Local 234 have issues with their pension after retiring, as well as overall salary. SEPTA officials have put an offer on the table that

will raise their pension cap by 8 percent, as well as raising their annual salary from $68,000 to $76,000. The workers union is yet to respond to this proposal, and appears to be in no rush to return to their jobs as they have seen how much of a wreck the city is without them. The one main power that SEPTA holds is money? many of these workers are living paycheck to paycheck, and potentially losing a few weeks? worth of salary will eventually make them desperate to get back to work.

SEPTA's strike resulted in more cars on the road as people were forced to find alternative ways to work and school.

For the last few days the SEPTA strike has shut down the city and turned it into utter chaos. They have proved their significance to the city and how hard and inconvenient it is to be without them. A large factor in ending the strike was Tuesday?s election. Since many people had to leave home earlier in the morning during the strike to get to work on time, large amounts of them

would have left too early to hit the polls before work, which is a common trend in recent elections. This would result in lower voter turnout this year, so the city placed an injunction on SEPTA workers to work at least part of the day on Election Day. However, SEPTA avoided court and came to an agreement with its workers early on Monday, creating a new five-year deal.

The agreement will lead to wage increases, pension reorganization, and keep health care coverage. It is currently pending union ratification. Regarding the strike, SEPTA chairman Pasquale Deon said: "We sincerely regret this disruption to transportation throughout the city of Phildelphia and the region".

things Harry Potter.

Whether you?ve seen them on the roof playing Quidditch, sprinting around Prep?s hallways on Horcrux hunts, or erupting in noise in room 206, members of the Harry Potter Club can be found all over school, willing to share their love for the series with anyone who asks. The club is one of the underrated gems of the Prep, something that isn't frequently talked about but should be. Open to any new members who are fans of the books or movies, HPC meets every other week to eat food and discuss all

The President of the club, Nick Mattera ?19, had this to say of an average meeting, ?We start with Trivia about one of the books, each house-Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin- tries to get the most questions right, so their house can earn the most points. At the end of the year, we tally up the points and the house with the most is awarded the House Cup just like in the books. We then watch videos or read fan theories and discuss them.? Nick also highlighted the fact

that it?s a fun, low-commitment club and that anyone can join at any time. He especially encourages people with the personality of a Slytherin, a house that currently consists of myself and him, to join. The self-proclaimed Vice President of the club, me, described some of the other club activities. ?At the beginning of the year, each person takes the Pottermore quiz and is sorted into a house which they will compete for all year. Last year, a fun way that we earned points for our houses was the Horcrux hunt. For those who aren?t familiar with

the series, Harry Potter spent a lot of time searching for Horcruxes- pieces of Voldemort?s soul. For our hunt, we raced around the school, finding clues and looking for Ms. Gulli?s makeshift horcruxes. We try to find other fun Harry Potter themed activities to do throughout the year. For example, we?re taking a trip to see the newest movie that takes place in the Harry Potter world, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.?

much of the club until now, they?ve been all over the announcements this year because of the trip they?re planning to England. Harry Potter Club moderator Ms. Gulli and 10 members of the club will be traveling to London and Oxford this spring break, visiting different sites pertaining to the books and movies. They?ll visit places that served as actual sets of the movie and those that influenced places in the Harry Potter world.

And that?s not the only trip the Harry Potter Club is taking this year. While you may not have heard

The club is excited to stand where their favorite famous actors once stood, and to experience, in person,

the magical environment of London and of the Harry Potter sets. While it may not have won Activity of the Year yet, the Harry Potter Club is a perfect representation of the Prep. It shows that all interests are accepted and encouraged here. A few kids had a passion for something as simple as a book, and they turned it into a club that?s still going strong today. So next time you pass by 206 and hear the Harry Potter Club?s crazy antics, go in, and join them in celebrating the creative genius that is Harry Potter.

No Pl ace f or Hat e: Prep Travel s t o ADL Conf erence By Joe Scot t '19 We all see the ?No Place for Hate signs in our cafeteria, and many of us wear the button with the logo on our jackets or lanyards. But how many of us have stopped to think about what that really means, and how we can try to make that phrase completely true in our school? Last Thursday, 8 students from the Prep attended a conference at the Philadelphia Convention Center run by the Anti-Defamation League, or the ADL. The ADL is the organization behind the ?No Place for Hate? campaign. Our students were joined there by about 500 students of 52 other schools who also participate with the ADL. These high schools were challenged by the ADL to ?imagine a world without hate.? This loving world is the goal, and our students can help us get there. The day began with splitting the schools up, so that there were

many small groups of about 20 students. The groups were made so that there were no two students from any one school in a group. These groups went into conference rooms with ADL leaders to initiate and direct conversation. These leaders brought the students through discussions and activities that challenged bias and hate in their school communities. One activity that was unanimously highly regarded was one in which the group leader placed two signs on either side of the room saying ?Strongly Agree? and ?Strongly Disagree.? They read a series of statements and the students were forced to decide which side they were on. Once everyone picked a side, the leader called on students to give their reasoning or beliefs in the topic. This activity opened the floor to lots of open, respectful discussion on issues currently facing our world. After the morning

workshop, students were able to have lunch with their schools. This lunch workshop was geared toward bringing the ideas taught throughout the day back to their schools. Many ideas were discussed, including teaching about bias and hate in classes. Some people also had the idea of doing activities similar to those in the morning workshop in English Class counseling sessions. Each school

went home with many ideas like those, and hopefully the students can implement those ideas to spread the ADL message beyond the conference. For the next part of the day all of the students sat at tables and Jeannie Smith spoke. Her keynote speech was about her mother, Irene Gut Opdyke, who was a young woman when the Holocaust changed her life in Poland. She was separated from her

family and wound up being able to save the lives of 12 Jewish people by hiding them in the home of a German captain. Her story was one of forgiveness and love being able to trump the hate that was thrust upon her and her family. The whole day was a gift to the students who were able to participate in it. John Leuzzi ?19 said, ?It was such an amazing experience. I hope to come back next year with more people from

school.? His words reflected the thoughts of many attendees. But it is important to remember the mission of the ADL; the conference was not just a day to miss school and meet a lot of other kids. The students that attended were tasked with bringing their lessons back to their schools, and, even if it is difficult, bring us closer to a world without hate.

The Need f or Pol it ical Ref ormat ion By Wil l iam Grugan '19 Election years, by design, push Americans to opposite sides of the political spectrum. The danger of this situation is in not in generally expressing one?s ideas, but in allowing these ideas to ensnare our entire lives from morning to night. As candidates look for support by taking stances on fundamental issues (guns, abortion, the environment, etc.), people start picking and choosing their friends based on political alignment. This has persisted to the point of there being an almost preexisting tension between Democrats and Republicans. As children and teenagers, we have been told to avoid discussion of politics

when meeting strangers. Why? Throughout time, whether Revolutionary versus Loyalist or dog versus hiccups, there have been very few struggles posing interpretable, unanswered questions that end in a mutual victory. Voters who are swayed by candidates?policies on larger issues not only see themselves as right, but they view anyone who disagrees as wrong. It is this same issue of ?right or wrong? that prompts some people to let their political beliefs form social black holes, which too often engulf all other dimensions of their lives. In other words, a diagram displaying the positive relationships between people of varying political alignments would have very little overlap come election

day. A large factor in the polarization of the American people is the use of negative propaganda. Every commercial break, there are several ?bad for our nation? and ?our children are watching? ads spitting out onto every single television in the nation. This kind of political nonsense serves only to fuel the fire. Now, instead of just being divided on all of the important issues, Americans are forced to focus this frustration on millions of our fellow countrymen. These generalizations have the crushing effect of moving voters to pick their candidates based simply on their party. People don?t choose candidates by assessing their views individually; they wait for one to introduce himself or herself as a ?Democrat? or a ?Republican.? Their obedience leaves the decision to a small percentage of the nation who will weigh the positives and negatives of each candidate in order to choose one who can represent their values the best.

In this election especially, we have seen extreme villainization of each party?s candidate, which has pushed many voters to choose, well, not to choose. Clinton?s email scandal and Trump?s insensitivity have been the focus of their respective rivals? campaigns. The issue with this isn?t simply that it singularly displays the negative aspects of the candidates; rather, it is the fact that supporters now, instead of voting for a candidate with whom they agree, vote against the opposition. Of course, there is also the group that chooses not to vote at all. In a political climate now dictated by hatred instead of a common goal of bettering the nation, voters are choosing to be stuck with ?the lesser of two evils.? Whether the exacerbation of Secretary Clinton?s email scandal, or the knowledge of Mr. Trump?s ?grabbing? tendencies, each candidate is presented to voters as flawed. This discontent, in

turn, is passed to friends, spouses, coworkers, and children. From there, it becomes the source of lunchroom arguments, unfriending on Facebook, and the hurling of mashed potatoes during Thanksgiving dinner. Party hatred has mutated into the discrediting of entire social groups. ?You?re a Liberal? You must not be a real American.? ?You?re a Republican? You must be sexist.? The far left and far right -relatively small groups fueled by selective censorship from media outlets promoting their own circles by decrying the others -are displayed as representing the bulk of each party. What?s worse is the fact that this, yet another generalization, affects the entire party?s view of the opposition. Now, Americans are forced to choose not just a candidate for president, but to adopt his or her negative reputation in the eyes of the other party. Anyone who turns on the television can witness the desperate attempts of each

candidate to win over millennial voters. There is something truly revolting about this. Candidates, hungry for another supporter to walk into the booth, go so far as to try and corrupt the incoming generation of voters with the same hatred and the same bias, just to promote a sustainable votership for the next set of politicians to endorse the same negative outlook as the last. This cycle will continue until it is broken by the entire nation. The people of America need to unanimously decide that our beliefs will no longer be swayed. We need to look at the positives of each candidate, rather than the negatives of the other. We, the current and upcoming, cannot allow ourselves to simply project the beliefs of those before us. For future elections, I challenge you to take a step back and think objectively, without the nonsense with which you can easily be swayed, about which candidate is truly qualified to be all of our leader.

Travis Manion (cont .) be associated with the program as leaders of the leadership-oriented activities. Many current students and alumni of the Prep have graduated from the leadership program since it beginning in 2014. Most, if not all, of the program?s graduates have been able to acquire new knowledge about teamwork, efficacy, and perseverance. These lessons are only a portion of the valuable aspects of this program. As Ms. Cook sees it, ?The most valuable aspect of the program is the opportunity for young veterans to directly engage our students in conversations about leadership virtues like integrity, moral courage, gratitude, hope and resilience.? And though the course is focused on becoming a good leader, it also emphasizes the importance of being a good, attentive student. Participants of the program will quickly learn poignant lessons such as the fact leadership is a daily practice.

But the program also has many benefits that do not apply directly to the students who sign up for it. The program also aids in the breaking down of stereotypes and assumptions that people may carry about veterans. Through interactions with the veteran leaders, students learn that not every soldier is a stone-faced, overly masculine, listless man, but that many of them have varying personalities and qualities. Students will quickly understand that many of these men are kind, empathetic, self-aware and gentle people just like the rest of us. Simple nuances like this are what make the program so unique and potent in a community of impressionable minds like a high school. The veterans themselves are often able to reap many benefits from the program too. Just like us, many of them are currently searching for themselves. Some of them are taking classes at local universities, jump starting the next phase in their lives. One

Travis Manion, a graduate of the Naval Academy, died in combat in Iraq in 2007. veteran leader, Terence, has even started a successful crossfit gym in the area. These interactions that the program offers are symbiotic to both parties, veterans and students. The success of the leadership program at the Prep has prompted the replication of it at three other schools in the tristate area: Council Rock, LaSalle, and Lenape High School in Mount

Laurel, New Jersey. But its success is also due to the largesse of other foundations and people. One benefactor of the program, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, has given the Travis Manion Foundation the ability to run these development workshops for high schools students, focused on building ?a spirit of character and community service in the next generation, honoring the example that fallen veterans

have set in their own lives.? Having such an opportunity available to us at the Prep is something that we shouldn?t take for granted, and I urge any sophomore or junior who is interested to apply in the future, even as soon as the Spring session this year. From my own experience, I can say that what can be obtained from this program is priceless. The relationships you

build with the veterans and other students have irrefutable benefits and there are virtues and knowledge that you will gain that are not available anywhere else, at least not here at the Prep. Knowing how to be a good leader is essential to being successful in our society, and as the next generation and future leaders of our nation, programs like this are essential to unlocking our futures.

German exchange st udent s weigh in on "Americanisms" By Thomas Dint ino ?19 While the exchange students from Germany were here at the Prep, I had the opportunity to ask them significant questions via a questionnaire. Some of their answers were unanimous, such as

that Germany should be stay in the EU and that their favorite thing that happened in the year 1776 was the Declaration of Independence. Below are the responses that differed compiled into charts brought to you by Google Sheets.

Hinkie Dies For Our Sins By James Brenner '18 On June 23, 2016 at the 2016 NBA Draft, Sam Hinkie?s goal as Philadelphia 76ers General Manager came true. Ben Simmons, an Australian born forward from LSU, came out of college after his first and only season with the Tigers and became the most exciting prospect since Lebron James. But there was one problem, Hinkie wasn?t there. Hinkie took over in 2013 after then-newly hired GM

Tony DiLeo traded Sixers legend Andre Iguodala as part of a four-team trade for Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson. When the highly-rated Andrew Bynum didn?t play a minute, DiLeo was fired and thus ?The Process? began. The first step in the Process was trading Jrue Holiday for Nerlens Noel and a first-round pick. This was questionable at first, but looking back on it, Hinkie?s decision was brilliant. The Sixers drafted Elfrid Payton with this pick

and immediately traded him for Dario Saric and a 2017 first round pick. These two trades were the defining moments of the Sixers beginning their long stretch of ?tanking.? In the 2014 and 2015 NBA drafts, the 76ers selected Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor, respectively, both taken 3rd overall. Joel Embiid was projected to be the top pick in the draft, but he suffered a navicular stress fracture in his right foot- a stress fracture that would haunt

Philadelphia for the next two years. Okafor, on the other hand, had a great rookie season, finishing fifth in the rookie of the year voting, and putting up monster numbers for a first year player. Even with Okafor?s great success, the 76ers were the worst team in basketball finishing with a 10-72 record, the third worst of all time, only besting the 2012 Charlotte Bobcats and the 1973 76ers. The 2016 season however, was not a failure in the slightest. As the worst team in the league, the 76ers came into the draft lottery with the highest chance of drafting first overall. The future was looking very bright for the 76ers, except for one man. Jerry Colangelo was sent to the Sixers by the NBA because of fear that Hinkie?s process might work. On April 6, 2016, Sam Hinkie was swindled into releasing a 13-page letter, officially resigning as General Manager of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Joel Embiid praised Sam Hinkie in a recent Instagram post after his resignation

Though this was a sad moment in the history of the Philadelphia 76ers, Hinkie?s resignation

brought to light his pure genius and a beautiful heartfelt note. So well written that Prep history teacher and self-proclaimed President of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Jarvis Varnado Fan Club, Mr. Kevin Dlugos ?12, said ?If I ever teach an English class I would use this letter as an example of a good essay.? Dlugos cites that Hinkie impeccably uses and analyzes quotes, from Abraham Lincoln to Warren Buffet to Bill Belichick, to prove his point. Hinkie?s letter came as a shock to most Philadelphians and sports fans alike, but Jerry Colangelo, of whom Dlugos says, ?He?s a Disney villain, just pure evil,? was quick to hire his own son, Bryan, as the new 76ers General Manager. And although Bryan Colangelo has been a good General Manager thus far, he still has yet to prove himself by making any difficult decisions. Thus the Process died, but still the idea lives on not only in the hearts and minds of Hinkie supporters but also in Sixers players, most notable Joel ?The Process?

Embiid. In order to win a championship in the NBA you need three things: luck, and two superstars. The Sixers may have acquired both these superstars in Embiid and Simmons, though they came at a very high price. If the Sixers do end up winning their fourth championship with players such as Embiid and Simmons, it would be very difficult to give credit to anyone else besides Hinkie, for assembling the talented roster capable of accomplishing this feat. When asked about the level of credit Hinkie ought to get for the team?s future success, Dlugos responded, ?As close to 100% as possible.? Though Hinkie?s time with the Sixers was extremely successful all good things must come to an end, as Hinkie illustrates in his resignation letter, ?New Zealand?s flightless bird the moa [...] had the life tramping around the South Island for a great long run; then the first M?ori explorers washed ashore in canoes, and that was that.?

Joel Embiid : The Savior Phil adel phia Deserves By Chris Rat hke '17 It had been 31 straight months where Joel Embiid had not played a meaningful game of basketball. That changed last Wednesday night. The selection to take Joel Embiid with the third overall pick in 2014 was seen by many as a dumb decision. The Sixers, right in the middle of their rebuild, were going to take another injured big man. Many traditional fans of team building were against this. These are the same people who are chanting ?Trust The Process? and ?MVP? as Embiid is at the foul line over two years later. The true teambuilding genius of former GM Sam Hinkie was not pellucid to all upon

his undertaking of the role in 2013. However, now he is being vindicated every time Embiid steps on a NBA floor. Embiid has the potential to be a revolutionary player. There has never been someone like him in the history of basketball. He is 7?2 and nearly 300 pounds, yet has the speed and agility of a man half his size. He is a natural basketball player, since he picked up the game at 15 and was recruited to Kansas only three years later. He can do the most important thing in today?s NBA: shoot three pointers, which he learned to do by watching ?average white guys.? Off the court, he is a social media legend. From his attempt to court Rihanna and

recruitment of LeBron James to Philadelphia, to putting ?Hinkie died for our sins? on an Instagram picture and telling the Sixers? PA announcer to refer to him as ?The Process.?

although newcomers will not remember how we got there (If you don?t remember Pierre Jackson, you?re

one of those people), they will share in the spoils of watching a truly transcendent talent every night.

Joel Embiid is ?The Process,? and this city is better because of it.

Obviously, the drawback for Embiid is his injuries. He has broken his foot twice, and that injury tends to come back and haunt the career of dominant centers in the NBA. However, with the new state-of-the-art training facility the team has, and playing Joel for limited minutes for much of this season, they hope to limit the re injury chances. As the team moves forward from the doldrums of losing, basketball will again be a popular sport in Philadelphia. And

Joel Embiid looks to finally bring success to the Sixers.

Prul t imat e: A Sport on t he Rise By Dan Avingt on ?18 Ultimate frisbee is a sport that few people know about, but the Prep Ultimate team is one of the fastest growing activities at the Prep. The sport is sort of a mix between football and soccer, but uses a frisbee instead of a ball. The players throw the disc to each other, trying to get down the field into the end zone, but they cannot throw an incomplete pass or run after they catch the disc, or possession will be given to the other team. Games are played to either 13 or 15, depending on what the teams decide at halftime, which is always when one team scores seven points. This year, the Prultimate team is led by captain Matt Bevilacqua ?18, along with a core of experienced upperclassmen such as Ryan Crenny ?17, Jared Ernst ?17 and Jake Legaard ?18. But the difference in the team this year is that a strong group of talented freshman,

including Thomas Avington ?20 and David Fosbenner ?20, assists the veterans, and they certainly help improve the team. Crenny and Bevilacqua were asked the question of why they joined the team in the first place, and Crenny jokingly answered, ?I heard you get [lots of opportunities to meet girls] if you play frisbee. This was a lie.? Bevilacqua took the more conservative route, talking about how he got cut from the soccer team freshman year, and he was looking for an athletic activity which wouldn?t be too time consuming and would still be a lot of fun, and that is what he found. Some freshmen on the team already speak about how much they enjoy the sport, even though they?ve only been involved in the activity for two months. When asked what his favorite aspect of the sport is, Crenny claimed, ?I like how fast paced the game is and

the constant opportunities for highlight plays since the disc can float for so long.? In response to the same question, Bevilacqua talked about how the team is pretty much carefree and laid-back, but they still go out every game and give it their all. This laid-back attitude is the aspect of the team that is so attractive to many of the players, but the team also is competitive in tournaments and their regular season matches.

asking about their opinions on how the team will do in the spring season, Crenny responded, ?Expectations for the spring are city championship or bust.? Bevilacqua went with the less daring route, saying, ?For the spring season, we're looking to make another run at the city championship. We've been the city

runner up the past two years and are hoping to break that trend. Other than that, we really just want to continue our success in tournaments and continue to grow and become more competitive both in general as a team and in every game we play.? Additionally, Bevilacqua and Crenny were guests on the

High School Sports Show on 610 AM to talk about their experiences playing ultimate frisbee, which was a very cool opportunity for both of the students. This appearance on live radio demonstrates how frisbee is a sport on the rise, and the Prep has the ability to be a very successful team in the future.

The sport has two seasons, one in the spring and one in the fall. So far in the fall season, the team has competed in two tournaments, and won their division in both of them, ending up with a 4-1 record in the tournaments. As they went up against teams of varying divisions in their regular season, it was filled with ups and downs, but was successful overall. When approached with the question

Prep's Ultimate Frisbee team shows off some new "hardware" for the trophy case.

Prep Rugby Ends f or Fal l , but Looks t o St at e Tit l e in Spring By Wil l Bresl in '18 This fall the Preps 7s rugby team wrapped up a long and demanding season with a loss in the quarter finals of the state championship. The team battled through several tournaments throughout the regular season, and believed vehemently it was in a great place to battle the rest of the Pennsylvania schools for a shot at the Rugby 7s state championship trophy. Sadly, this was not the case, as the team failed to get past

Downingtown in the third round of the five round tournament. While the loss was heartbreaking, the team is taking it in stride, using this loss as fuel for a solid run during the 15s season, a much more physically demanding game, which starts in early 2017. Having had success in the past, and wielding an extremely dangerous team of talented Preppers, the Prep expects to once again contend for a state title. This season, the team was led by Captain

Gaelan Kelly '17, who admitted that the team suffered this season from a significant loss of senior talent from last year's team. However, the team did not let this interfere with their drive to achieve the coveted state championship title. This group of determined gentlemen has committed to practicing every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-5, in preparation for the tournament. Coach Tom Dugan '78 has repeatedly emphasized the

importance of practicing with the team stating that "Rugby is a game of passing and catching. Excel in those areas and you can win any game. Many teams attempt to accomplish fancy skill moves, or one man break aways, but in a game of 7s passing and catching is vital". This year, the team has been fortunate enough to welcome Coach Kevin Tkachuk, a former professional rugby player, to the Prep coaching staff. "Coach T" has provided another pair

of eyes for the coaches, another voice for the players, as well as providing a level of experience that few people have achieved.

Brian McCloskey, to form a staff of coaches who all played rugby in the past, and have been able to help develop the Prep's players.

Coach Tkachuk has played international rugby in Canada and overseas and coached top level club-rugby all over the world.

Under the leadership of some of the best coaches in the area, the 7s team was able to have a successful regular season, competing in a plethora of tournaments, from Philadelphia, to Selinsgrove, while reaching the final a handful of times. The team came up short in the state championship but that will not deter them from their ultimate goal: Winning the 15s State title.

Unquestionably, this experience has helped the players reach a higher level of performance than they would have otherwise. Coach Tkachuk joins Head Coach: Tom Dugan, Assistant Coach: Steve Rae, and rugby moderator:

"I also felt it was important to express the ongoing challenges and ongoing injustice we face as a black community within the United States of America ? that's very important to me," Streeter said. "Yes, we live in the greatest country in the world but there are issues that we cannot ignore. This can't be ignored." Streeter also made these comments about her choice to wear the jersey in her interview with The Associated Press. The 49ers? quarterback Colin Kaepernick, spiked some controversy when he decided to sit during the performance of the national anthem during a season opening game. Freedom of speech in itself is a very delicate issue during any event, especially non-political ones. Events such as sports games, a topic such as Black Lives Matter can be seen as a form of offense to a group of individuals. However, this still does not permit anyone from impeding upon other individual?s right to support their beliefs. Not too long after this incident blew up in the media, the 76ers released a statement saying, ?We are sorry that this happened. Will t h e War r ior s Win ? By Daniel O'Connel l '19 There is a proverb that states ?you can have too much of a good thing,? and that is exactly what the Golden State Warriors have done in the offseason. Recently, they have signed past NBA MVP and four time scoring champ Kevin Durant to their already star studded roster. The roster consists of Steph Curry, a two time NBA MVP; Klay Thompson, a third team all NBA player; and Draymond Green, a second team all NBA player. Also, former Sixer and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala is on this team as well. Last year this team, without Durant, had a historical season of winning 73 games and only losing nine. This beat the previous record for most wins in a season that was held by Michael Jordan and the 1996 Bulls of 72 10. The Warriors were able to do this through the unbelieveable shooting by the league's MVP Steph Curry. He hit a record 402 three pointers, shattering his own previous record of 286 threes in a season which he shot in 2015. This team ultimately

went to the NBA championship but were defeated by Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers after blowing a 3-1 game lead. In the playoffs however, they beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, which consisted of Durant and Russell Westbrook. Durant has only been to the finals one time previously in a loss to the Miami Heat in 2012. So this sense of frustration was stuck in Durant?s head, because no matter what he did to bring his team close to the finals, they just could not finish the job. He became a free-agent this offseason and had the option of signing back with the Thunder or to a new team such as the Celtics, the Clippers, or the Warriors. After spending some time with the Warriors at training camp, he decided this was the best environment for him to win a championship, and he signed with the team. In leaving, he was seen as a traitor, an everyday basketball Benedict Arnold. His jersey was burned, his fans spoke about him on social media, and his

former teammate Russell Westbrook spoke out against Durant?s decision. But despite all this push-back, Durant thanked the Thunder for everything they had done for him, packed his bags, and went to Golden State. Because of the amount of firepower this team has, sports analysts around the country had picked them to have a fantastic season, breeze through the playoffs, and win the championship, but this will not happen. The first reason is, taking the spotlight off of Steph will hurt his confidence. We have seen this happen already, with the MVP not performing even close to the way he had been for the last two years. His point average has seen a significant drop, and he does not seem like he is mentally in the game, making silly turnovers and losing the ball more often. A lesser version of what Steph Curry used to be is no doubt affecting the team.

before, no one can deny that the Warriors team without Durant had unbelievable chemistry. Knowing where players are going to be before they get there, always making the extra pass, and just looked like they were having fun on the court. The addition of Durant to the starting lineup and losing their center Andrew Bogut, have changed this chemistry for the worse. Durant has so far been a fantastic player who is scoring at will, but this has taken away from the flow of the team, with players having to learn their new roles on the court. Lastly, they are an inconsistent team. They have learned the hard

way that a player can both live and die by the three, with some nights not being able to miss, to others when all they can do is miss. Recently in a loss to the Lakers, a very beatable team, Steph Curry went 0-10 on three pointers, and the rest of the team didn?t shoot too well either with a bunch of air balls being heaved from areas they are usually made. Whereas the night before, a win against Durant?s old team the Thunder, they were firing on all cylinders, Durant especially. He had a 29 point first half and finished with 39 in the game. The defense by the Warriors was also impressive, holding the current leader in points per game Russell Westbrook to only 20

points. But it is this complete inconsistency of the team that will be their downfall. So despite all of the talent and promise this Golden State team has, they will not win the championship this year because of disappearance of their star player, the change in the flow of the past finals team, and most importantly, because of their inconsistency from one game to the next. Now if this team was given two maybe three years to begin to feel comfortable and the chemistry is added, then it would be a different story for the outcome, but as of right now this team will not win the championship this year.

Secondly, the team chemistry has changed. Watching the games last year and the year The Warriors look to win a championship after last year's record of 73-9.

The Longest Drought in Sport s Hist ory Has Been Quenched !

By Michael Enright '18 The 2016 MLB World Series was one for the ages with an almost storybook progression and finale. The Chicago Cubs lead by Joe Maddon squared off against Terry Francona and the Cleveland Indians in a battle to claim glory. With a combined drought of 176 years without a World Series, the fans in both Chicago and Cleveland have been waiting far too long for this moment. First we have the Cubs. The best record in the league at 103-58 and the longest Championship drought in all active American Sports at 108 years. Lead by Joe Maddon, the Cubs were going into the series hot with 3 straight wins against the LA Dodgers that included stellar pitching and stars such as Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell masterfully swinging the bat. In addition, the Cubs made one of the most ludicrous roster decisions in the history of the World Series through bringing in Kyle Schwarber, who hadn?t played all season. Schwarber had been recovering from an injury he suffered in the beginning of the season where he blew out two ligaments in

his knee when the front office of the Cubs called him back from an Arizona Fall League and decided to start him in game 1. Then we have the Indians. With a sensational season at 94-67 that included a 14 game win-streak at one point, Cleveland had been cruising through the postseason. With unreal pitching under Corey Kluber and Andrew Miller, they swept the Boston Red Sox before dominating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 in the ALCS. With the stage set and the teams ready, one of the craziest World Series in years began. On a cold Tuesday night in Cleveland, the first pitch was thrown and they were off. Game 1 and 2 were played on frosty nights in Cleveland, Game 1 ending in the Indians cruising past the Cubs 6-0 with Corey Kluber on the mound destroying the Cubs lineup with 8 Ks in the first 3 innings. The almost opposite happened in Game 2 where the Cubs, fueled by 2 RBIs from the aforementioned Kyle Schwarber and a dominant outing from the 2015 Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta, cruised past the Indians with a final score of 5-1.

With the series tied 1-1, Game 3 was headed back to Wrigley Field, the first World Series Game to be played at Wrigley since 1945. With fans with like Bill Murray and John Cusack looking on in anguish, the Indians won a nailbiter 1-0 with a clutch RBI single from CoCo Crisp and Javier Baez striking out with 2 men in scoring position for the last out of the game. Game 4 didn?t provide any catharsis for Cub?s fans as Corey Kluber had another dominant performance and the Indians again were cruising, winning the game. With the Cubs appearing to be heart broken and defeated and the Indians appearing to have the Championship in the bag, Game 5 was played in front of a quiet Wrigley Field after an early HR was hit by JosĂŠ RamĂrez of the Indians until a clutch HR from Cub?s All-Star Kris Bryant brought the crowd back to life. With a 3-2 lead going into the seventh, Joe Maddon put the ball in closer Aroldis Chapman?s hands to keep the Cubs alive. With bated breath the fans in Wrigley watched as Chapman got out of a loaded-bases jam and

the crowd became electric. The Cubs went on to win the game and with series at 3-2, they were all headed back to Cleveland. Before a vivacious Cleveland crowd, Game 6 started off with a bang as the Cubs went on to score 3 runs in the first innings, 2 of which were scored off an error in right field. The Cubs went on to coast past the Indians 9-2, sending this game to a historic Game 7. The tension was palpable as Game 7 began with Corey Kluber on the mound and Dexter Fowler at the Plate. After a hard fought AB, the Cubs fans went from anxiety to ecstasy as Fowler crushed the ball over the centerfield wall. After compiling five runs over 5 innings, it looked like the end of the world for Indians fans with the score line of 5-1 and Kyle Hendricks pitching a solid game. Maddon decided to turn to Jon Lester after a two-out walk in the fifth, an inning that ended with Cleveland scoring 2 runs and the crowd coming to life after a wild pitch got away

from Veteran Catcher David Ross. Cubs fans started to get antsy until Ross, partially responsible for letting 2 runs score the inning before, squared up a Solo HR bringing the score to be 6-3 in the top of the sixth. This score remained until the bottom of the eighth where the season look over for Cleveland as Aroldis Chapman was brought in for the third game straight to finish the job; however, the opposite happened. It seemed like a dream for Cleveland fans and a nightmare for Cubs fans as the Indians had three hits and three runs off of the hard throwing lefty capped off with Rajai Davis?s 2-Run HR. Cleveland fans were going crazy including Lebron James who was flexing in the upper decks. The game was tied at 6-6 and remained that way until the top of the tenth where the game became somehow crazier when there was a 17 minute rain delay. When the teams walked back on the field, after an inspirational speech from right fielder Jason Heyward, the Cubs scored 2 runs in the top of the tenth with a RBI double off the bat of second baseman Ben Zobrist.

After the Indians finally got out of it, the Cubs brought in pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. to close the game, but after a two-out RBI single by Rajai Davis, the ball was handed to Mike Montgomery with the score at 8-7 in the Cub?s favor. With Martinez of the Indians at the plate, a soft grounder was hit to third baseman Kris Bryant who rocketed it to first for the last out of the season. The Cubs won the series, and second baseman Ben Zobrist won the MVP award for the series. After waiting 108 years, the cries of pure happiness rang from Chicago fans as the trophy was finally coming back to Wrigley. Lifetime Cubs fan Michael Enright (My Dad) explained, ?Seeing the Cubs win erased all the memories of 100 loss seasons and playoff collapses (including Bartman). I feel lucky to have seen it since many before me did not get the chance.? After a historic season and one of the craziest World Series in years, the Chicago Cubs are finally at the top once again.

By Michael Enright '18 A question that has been confusing Eagles? fans all season so far is whether or not their favorite football team is capable of making the playoffs. I believe, despite the mediocre record of 4-3 this year, that the Philadelphia Eagles are going to make the 2016 playoffs with a young, powerful New head coach Doug team that has the Pederson, who has potential of beating playoff experience with any team in the league. the Chiefs, seems to The first reason why have the winning the Eagles can make formula for this young the playoffs is due to and growing roster. As for their record Besides that, if the thus far, they contested defense keeps up the every game this season, intensity and Carson losing all three games Wentz continues to this year within one improve, the roster will score. They? ve been not be a problem, but a able to destroy good weapon in aiming for teams including the 5-0 the post season.

Shhh, if you listen closely you can hear the Eagles choking against the Lions, Redskins, and Bears.

Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and only lost to the 5-1 Dallas Cowboys by one score in overtime after leading by 10 at one point. The Eagles grow every week with a solid coach who is able to keep adjusting and an offense that only gets better. Their remaining schedule may look tough from the outside, but up until this point in the season they have already proven to be a team that can beat anyone. In the end, the Philadelphia Eagles have a legitimate shot at beating any team in the league and have the ability to make the playoffs if they keep up the intensity. They have a solid roster that is able to improve each week with one of the best cities in the world behind them. It?s just a matter of time before the Eagles break out and make a legendary run for their first Super Bowl.

The Philadelphia Eagles are a solid young team with one of the most well known rookie quarterbacks in the league. It is, perhaps, most interesting to hear the most optimistic fans in the league talk of what to expect in the playoffs, despite the fact that it is three months away. The Eagles, as most know, started the season with three great consecutive wins against the Browns, Bears, and Steelers. The Steelers was perhaps their most notable win amongst the first three teams because, at time, they were believed to be the best team in football. With that being said, it must be noted that the Eagles then lost two straight against mediocre teams. During those loses, the team?s star rookie quarterback, Carson Wentz, played below standard and below the precedent he set for himself in the previous games. Furthermore, as a rookie, Carson Wentz could be reaching the stage in his season where his beginner's luck runs out and the

the Broncos had legendary quarterback Peyton Manning running the offense.

speed and intensity of the NFL take its toll. Take former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel as an example. Manziel was a star in his college life, as was Wentz, and is now not even signed to a team because he has, perhaps in part due to his social life, not produced well enough on the field during his first season. Could Carson Wentz be on his he way down, similar to Manziel?

While the Broncos did have a stunning defensive season, their offense was often left in the shadows despite having a decent season. Even when the Bronco?s offense had a good game, the highlights were often of how the defense did not produce up to par. It is troubling to hear some Eagles fans believe that even if the offense does not produce, the defense will be there to score the points. If every team allowed their defense to do the offense?s job then the league would be heading toward an even slower, lower scoring game. Overall, in any given game, the offense should produce the points, not the defense.

Some say it is too early to tell, but others look back at the game against the Minnesota Vikings and take special note of Wentz?s performance. It?s only fair to say that the only reason the Eagles won that game was because of their defense, since Wentz did not produce. Perhaps it was the pressure, perhaps it was the start of the end of his stardom.

In order to have a chance at a playoff berth, the Eagles need to produce offensively. Therefore, if rookie Carson Wentz can not produce well enough to win games, there is almost no way the Eagles can make the playoffs. Depending solely on a rookie, who has recently not been producing up to par, is not a solid foundation for a strong playoff run.

Yes, it is true that defense can win games, however, they should not be relied on throughout the season to do the offense's job. The main objective for the defense is to hinder the opposing team?s offense, not to score. One could also make the argument that the Eagles will have a playoff run because the Denver Broncos won the Super Bowl last year, almost solely on defense. It cannot go unnoted that

Debat e: Vil l anova vs. Duke By Robbie Cal abro ?19 Last year was a year of parity in college basketball. Every team had at least five losses entering the tournament, and there were not any dominant ?one-and-done? players. This year looks to be different. So far the Coaches Poll, AP Rankings, and Sports Illustrated have the same five teams at the top: Duke, Villanova, Kentucky, Kansas, and Oregon. These

programs are head and shoulders above the other 346 teams in NCAA basketball. Out of these five, almost every preseason ranking has Duke at number one overall, Oregon at number five, and the other three teams mixed. Villanova?s highest ranking comes in the USA Today Coaches Poll at number three. Despite their being defending National Champions, and

returning their best player Josh Hart, every major ranking has a team run by unproven freshman, such as Duke, ahead of them. Villanova will not have a single freshman start, as 5-star center Omari Spellman was ruled academically ineligible due to grades from his freshman year. The projected starting five of Jalen Brunson, Phil Booth, Josh Hart, Kris Jenkins, and Darryl Reynolds is unmatched.

All are experienced, and three of them, Brunson, Hart, Jenkins, started last year. Brunson and Booth are possibly the best guard tandem in the nation. Both can shoot, drive, and make heads up plays. Brunson, a sophomore, came along as the season progressed last year, and ended up playing most offensive possessions at point guard, instead of senior Ryan Arcidiacono. Booth played huge minutes in the National Championship when Jenkins and Bridges got into early foul trouble; he paced the team with 20 points.

Hart, a small forward, was named to the Preseason All-American First Team by the AP Press. He also is the favorite for Player of the Year, with his up-tempo style of play. If he can improve on his three point shooting a little bit, there?s no doubt he will win the POY and lead his team deep in the tournament. The Villanova bench captured in all its glory

By Zachary Carr '19 Duke Men?s Basketball enters the season ranked as the number one preseason team in the nation, according to AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches? Poll. They have the most talent in the nation, and also boast the best recruiting class. Additionally, they have the greatest coach of all time, Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K). Because of this, they are the team best equipped to win the National Championship.

Grayson Allen will start next to him at the two guard spot. Allen, a preseason All American, had an amazing season last year, and will look to build on the impressive campaign.

Coach K has not been clear on who will start at the forward spots when freshmen Harry Giles and Jayson Tatum become healthy, but many believe they will be the starters at the 3 and 4. Jayson Tatum is part of the insane recruiting class this year for Duke. He has the ability to create his own shot, and is an above average playmaker for his size. On defense, he will look to use his height effectively. Harry Giles, another part of the recruiting class, is ranked as ESPN?s top recruit in the class of 2016. Giles was blessed with extreme athleticism, and is an above average rebounder and defender. He has also shown touch offensively around the rim. Another freshman, Marques Bolden will most likely start at center for Duke. Bolden has a monstrous, athletic

frame. He will be a force defensively and on the glass. His offensive post game also has shown flashes of greatness. Amazingly, the bench may be Duke?s strength. The starting lineup is without a doubt impressive, but the bench has shooting potential, defensive versatility, and leadership. Amile Jefferson, Matt Jones, and Luke Kennard all have the possibility to crack the starting lineup at some point this season.

Luke Kennard is another rotation man for Duke. Kennard is a pure scorer, averaging 11.8 points per game last season. He is an excellent shooter, both beyond the arc and from the line. Chase Jeter is another part of this impressive bench. As a top ten recruit last year, he struggled early on in

Center is arguably where they will struggle the most, with a Reynolds-Paschall rotation most likely to be used. Reynolds, a Fordham transfer who won A-10 Rookie of the Year, can play outside the arc making him a nightmare matchup. Reynolds, an outstanding defender, showed he could bring some offensive firepower as well last year, scoring 19 points in a win against # 11 Providence while Ochefu was concussed. The biggest strength though, is their bench. Bridges, Paschall, Donte DiVincenzo, and Dylan

the season. He came on strong toward the end, earning a rise in his minutes in March last season. After those four players, freshmen Justin Robinson and Javin DeLaurier will battle for minutes. With such a loaded roster, their roles could fluctuate within the season.

Painter, their bench is more experienced and proven then any other bench in the league. Any one of those guys can fill in and not be a liability on the court, which is something not many other teams can say. This team should already be looking towards the Final Four. The Big East actually has some good competition, most notably Xavier, that will help them prepare for the tournament. Two of the top five teams, Duke and Kentucky, are run by inexperienced and some injury prone freshman. Oregon doesn?t have any winning experience in the tournament, and Kansas hasn't gotten any better since they were easily dispatched by Nova last year. Villanova is the clear to choice the become the first repeat champs since Florida in 2006-2007, and will be even be more dominant than last year.

The potential is sky high with this team, and they really have no glaring weaknesses. The talent and leadership on this roster will make Coach K?s job a little easier this season as the coach looks to win his sixth national championship.

The leadership will come from two seniors, Matt Jones and Amile Jefferson. Jefferson, a Philly native, is returning from injury that ended his season just nine games into the season. Jefferson is an excellent pick and roll defender, and destroys opposing teams on the glass. Matt Jones is a shut down perimeter defender, and can shoot the three ball. He has also shown the capability to be a ball handler, which be vital for Duke this year because of the lack of depth at point guard.

The backcourt looks to be the best in the nation. Freshman Frank Jackson will begin the season as the starting point guard. Jackson is a scoring machine. He has the ability to embarrass defenders in the paint with his extraordinary athleticism while also having the ability to shoot the deep ball.

He is an excellent scorer, with the capability to beat defenses at all three levels.

At power forward, they

will start Kris Jenkins, and have Eric Paschall and Mikal Bridges ? who can also play the 3 and 5 ? backing him up. Jenkins, who hit ?the shot? to put away the Tar Heels in one of the most iconic shots in tournament history, is a mismatch for anyone who guards him. He too quick for the traditional power forward, and too big for a guard. It also helps he can shoot lights out at times.

You say a little prayer as you whip out your phone to text, or even check the time, and who?s standing there but Mr. Monroe with his hand out. There?s nothing else to do but surrender your

device, and whatever conversation you were attempting to have, and take a JUG instead. But the overarching question, should it be punishable to use your phone in the hallway? The editors of The Hawkeye are split about this rule. Editor-in-Chief Aidan O?Connor ?17 says, ?Whether it be sending a quick ?love ya?to the ?rents, checking PowerSchool, or trying to keep a snap streak alive, there is a multitude of reasons to be on your phone in school. As such, it is absurd that the school designates highly specific ?cell phone

zones?? However, the other Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Erdy ?17 says, ? The ?cellphone?rule, while seemingly pedantic and authoritarian, does indeed hold merit? .Having an understanding about when to use a cellphone informs our behavior in different situations, an essential skill in making a strong first impression in the future.?

is necessary and should not be taken lightly? . The Prep?s rules are simple and easy to follow. Any violation of these rules is absurd and should be punished accordingly because of a student?s negligence and lackadaisical attitude.? On the issue or decriminalizing the hallway, in regards to the cell phone policy, The Hawkeye is split on a decision.

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Administration, The Hawkeye school newspaper would like to reach out to you all in order to encourage you to provide feedback and support for our little newspaper. Specifically, we were all hoping that students, teachers, and staff would consider penning an occasional "Letter to the Editor" which could be published in any issue during the year. Letters to the editor can touch on these topics and more: -Do you support a certain policy for our school community? -Did you particularly like an article that was published in our last issue? -Was there an article that you disagreed with and why? -Did you find an error that you would like to see corrected? You can send these letters via email to moderator Leo Vaccaro '05, the Editors-in-Chief Jon Erdy '17 and Aidan O'Connor '17, or Editorial Director John Kromchad

Furthermore, Opinion/ Debate section editor David McCabe ?19 says, ?The Prep?s cell phone policy

Musical Musings: Bl essed are t he Meek By Tim Harris '18 Philadelphia?s hip-hop scene has been around since the 80s. It has recently made a comeback, led primarily by Meek Mill. Meek, who was born in South Philly, came from a family who has been a part of the Philly hip-hop scene since its origins. His uncle, Grandmaster Neil, was one of the first DJs in the area, and inspired Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Meek?s father was killed when Meek was 5 years old, apparently in an attempted robbery. After his father?s death, his family, comprised of his mother and two sisters, moved to North Philly. There, they struggled to make ends meet, with his mom working many jobs and even resorting to stealing items from the grocery store and reselling them. Around this time, Meek started doing rap battles. Meek also formed a short lived group called the Bloodhoundz, who released four mixtapes together. In 2008, T.I., an Atlanta rapper and record executive, was very impressed with Meek

and immediately signed him to his label. This brings us to the present, with Meek?s long awaited ?Dream Chasers 4?. This new mixtape brings features from other well-known, but also up and coming rappers, such as Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Tory Lanez, and more. High production value, well placed samples including that of O Fortuna, strong beats, and well written lyrics make

for a strong tape throughout. Opening with the hard-hitting beat of ?On the Regular?, this tape brings energy right from the start. The transition to ?Blessed Up? is a little jarring, but appropriate. The lyrics of ?Blessed Up? are more serious than those of ?On the Regular?, talking about Meek?s faith in God. ?Litty,? living up to its name, is as strong as any other song, with a catchy hook, featuring Tory Lanez, and some memorably poppin

lyrics. ?Shine? recognizes all those who helped Meek on his way to the top, as well as giving himself credit for grinding through the struggle of growing up poor. He claims that music has saved his life. ?Froze,? on the other hand, talks about all the luxuries of making it to the top. In a similar way, ?The Difference? compares the high class things Meek and Quavo have to the things of those below

them. With an addicting beat by popular producer ?Sonny Digital,? the song is a fun listen. Introducing a much softer piano-based beat, ?Lights Out? is a response to to Meek?s various feuds and internet beefs. Meek and Don Q claim that being attacked only helps them out and makes them more well known. Up next, the inspiring lyrics and mellow beat of ?Blue Notes? is a highlight of the tape for me. It

shows Meek?s range as an artist, how he can make more than hard-hitting, energetic songs. With two of the best features on the mixtape, 21 Savage and Young Thug, ?Offended? has an entrancing beat, great flow, both individually and between each rapper. ?You Know? is a chill song with great juxtaposition between Meek?s and Nicki Minaj?s voices on the hook. Bringing more bumpin tunes, Meek describes how high in the rap game he has gotten. ?Two Wrongs? warns his enemies not to mess with his crew, since they won?t be opposed to violence. A sequel of ?Tony Story 1 and 2,? ?Tony Story 3? continues the narrative of Paulie?s revenge on Tony and his crew. With the some of the best lyricism on the tape, this highly anticipated track leaves more to be desired, and promises that part four is going to be a movie. Finally, ?Outro? brings up Meek?s grievances with everyone who doubted him along the way. A fitting end to the tape, this track comes full circle.

Goodbyes are Hard: Vine Packs Up Shop By Von Hobe '17 It's the end of an era. Although an exact date has not been announced, Vine is officially shutting down, and the hearts of social media consumers worldwide are crushed. No longer will a comedy hungry

millennial be able to log on to the Vine app and get his fix, or a young girl in need of some # dailymotivation get hers.

budding comedian, to the talented musician, to even the stop motion filmmaker, Vine allowed its users to share their content with the world through Since 2013, Vine has six-second videos. The become a convenient most successful platform for producers filmmakers were the of many genres of ones who made the content. From the

most of their six seconds, sometimes even using the loop feature as a trippy transition. Vine star KingBach reportedly collected a $15.8 mil. salary in 2015 for his hilariously amusing Vines. His ability to

share relatable content with his audience could only be surpassed by that of Nash Grier, another Viner who has made an unforeseeable amount of money through the app. Nash Grier's inspiring content could be seen as "my motivation to get out of bed each morning" (Hobe). But now the Vine community must say its goodbyes; the inspiration is gone. I specifically remember watching a vine by one of the most motivational social media icons in history, Jacob Sartorius. In the short video, he was able to inspire me by telling me to "not give up".

It's easy to see where this is going: What am I supposed to do now? Without being able to scroll through my feed every day, I must resort to my less-inspiring desk calendar, equipped with sub-par and outdated quotes. And now the hundreds of top Vine stars are out of work, giving us yet another reason why this shutting down is detrimental to our community, and even economy, given that the unemployment rate has gone up. I am now preparing for the loss of our daily inspiration, and needless to say, savoring my last few days with Vine.

Video Game Review: MLB 2k7 By Eamon '17

Gal l agher

Some avid sports gamers may fondly remember the 2007 installment of 2k?s discontinued annual baseball franchise. Others may recall it as simply a fun pastime. No matter how it is thought of by those who played it in the past, a look at 2k7 from a present day perspective proves that it holds up in almost every aspect. The game delivers on gameplay, immersion, soundtrack and much more. Gameplay is probably the most important feature of a sound game. This statement especially holds true in the sports division of the industry, where seemingly carbon copy

games of the same franchise are produced every year. Even in one of the departments where it is most difficult to gain distinction, 2k7 stands out. Some of the major mechanics that help 2k7 reach this notable level of satisfaction are the swing stick, ?true fielding? and controlled franchise management. The swing stick and ?true fielding are both new additions to the 2k baseball series, while the franchise management has undergone a number of improvements. The swing stick is a major positive as it provides a whole new way of batting. While previous installments of the 2k baseball

series required the user to press a button at the preferred moment to swing, 2k7 utilizes the right analog stick. The user will pull the stick back to prepare for the pitch, and then either release it in order to swing for contact, or swiftly push the stick forward to swing for the fences. This allows the user to really form a bond with their players, and provides the dynamic feel of swinging a baseball bat. True fielding has improved play from the defensive side. Developers of 2k7 took care in perfecting the artificial intelligence of the fielders, making everything seem more natural from hitting a cutoff man to making a mindbending wall

climb catch. Last but not least, 2k7 revamped the franchise management system. The user can take over management of the team of their choice and develop it in every facet. Major features include managing budget, making trades and calling up players, but 2k7 allows for so much more. The user can go as far as overseeing the staff and deciding what new pitches each pitcher should learn. This allows for a fuller baseball experience for those who do not get enough out of the 9 inning classics. All of these features provided a forerunner in baseball video gaming. Even though 2k has fallen off the (base)ball since, any

Nearl y 10 years af t er it s rel ease, t he graphics and gamepl ay of 2k7 cont inue t o impress .

game developer currently interested in the genre would be foolish not to include attributes similar to these groundbreaking improvements. On top of the game mechanics, 2k7 builds an atmosphere like no other. Before each game, a swinging panoramic shot of the home stadium is shown, including the recognizable landmarks of the arena, the concourse and the excited fans. All the while, acclaimed sportscasting personalities Steve Physioc and Jeanne Zelasko will give a rundown of the impending matchup, making relevant comments to the teams in play. If the starting pitchers have a high earned run average, Steve may quip that the forecast calls for raining baseballs. Similarly, Zelasko may point out that the home team has trouble winning in their own stadium, which she finds quite amusing. Once the pregame comments have been made and Zelasko thanks Steve for his input, they turn it over to Jon Miller and Joe Miller for the play by play. Not only are these sports legends able to give accurate information about each player before each at bat and the narrative of the game, but similarly

make clever quips and color commentator as a real live commentator would. If a batter swings at a pitch in the dirt, you will hear about it from Jon Miller. He usually jokes that he hasn?t seen a swing like that since little league. In addition, Joe Morgan answers fan mail questions during breaks in the action, which helps the user feel as though they are watching a real game on TV. Everything having been said about the game itself, it is the soundtrack that puts 2k7 on the top tier of sports videogames. The soundtrack mostly features rocking alternative tunes, including popular artists such as Nirvana and Sublime. 2k, however, is noteworthy for introducing players to new artists, and 2k7 is no exception. High Five Anxiety by Nerf Herder, a high intensity punk jam, is my personal favorite. Other significant underground music includes the song Man?s Ruin by the band Greatdayforup. These hits really help contribute to a lively atmosphere when immersing oneself in the world of a professional ball player. With top marks in every category, 2k7 is a must have for any self respecting sports fan.
