Pr ep Hock ey Ear n s Elu sive Tit le of " Spor t " Edit or ial: By Ryan Gill '17 an d Joh n Kr om ch ad '17 When looking back at the history of St. Joe?s Prep, years such as 1851, 1966, and 2016 are considered landmark years. 1851 being the year that the Prep was founded, 1966 was the year a fire burnt down two-thirds of the school, and 2016 is the year ice hockey became an official school sport at the Prep. Yes, that?s correct, every time that you came out to the Skatium to support the boys for Pink the Rink, or a primetime Friday night game against Lasalle or Malvern, it was considered a club activity. I can imagine your disbelief if this is news to you. The architects of phrases like ?doh?, ?aha?, ?shoot?, ?yams?, ?prolly?, and unfortunately the

source of a few teams inserting the letters ?PR? in front of the name of the sport, were not considered members of a school run program. I know what you?re thinking, that game last year at the Skatium that your girlfriend begged

you to bring her to was actually considered a club activity. So in conquering your fear of bringing her to see 20 of the most athletic and handsome students the Prep has to offer as they put on a show for the entire Prep community, I?m sure

you also realized that Prep Hockey is undeniably among the most respected and entertaining sports the Prep has to offer. Also known as the ?best looking team this side of the Mason Dixon?, Prockey is comprised of one

varsity and two JV teams totaling approximately 60 players. Led by a staff of eight coaches, including three prep alumni, the head coach of the varsity team, David Giacomin and founder of the organization and head coach of the JV Crimson team JP Colussi, have provided direction and leadership for the team over the past four years. Prep hockey has been a successful participant in the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League (ICSHL) winning the Presidents Cup in 2015 at the JV level and making it to the semi-finals of the AAA bracket of the Flyers Cup in 2016. The Prep is a member of the prep division including rivals such as Holy Ghost, Malvern, and LaSalle. ICSHL provides incredible competition

Th er e's a New Sh er if f in Tow n , A Q&A Wit h New Assist an t Dean Ran dy M on r oe By Joe Scot t '19 There is a new face in the St. Joe?s Prep administration. Assistant Dean Monroe began working at the Prep just this year. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with him about his time so far. Scott: How has the Prep treated you so far? Monroe: I like the Prep, I think it?s a special place. From the students, to the faculty it is a group of great people. And I think we all have a common goal, which is to teach and touch the lives of the young people at the Prep, and help prepare them for life after St. Joe?s Prep. It was something that really intrigued me, and I wanted to be a part of the success that this school has instilled in

so many young people, for such a long time. S: Where specifically has that been evident here? M: I see that in the Alums. I see a lot of the people that Coach Morris has coached, they are in business, some coach professionally overseas. There are mayors that have graduated. So, there is a reputation for people who have come here succeeding and withstanding the test of time. You want to be a part of something like that, because it says a lot about the organization itself. S: What is your goal here at the Prep? M: My thing is to come in everyday and try to impact these young people. To me, there is no greater satisfaction

than to see young people succeed. That can be in the classroom, or on the basketball court, that could be in every club. Every day, showing signs of growth, and maturity. I love that, that?s why I chose to work with young people.

Last Friday night as I made my way into the Prep vs. Wood football game, I met a Prep alum from the class of 1965. He began to tell me stories of his time at the Prep and although I was at first impatient to get into the stands, I took a moment to talk with him. One line he said stuck with me: ?I had friends who went to Cardinal Dougherty and LaSalle and that?s all good and fine. But LaSalle is for four years, the Prep is for life?. Although he graduated fifty-one years ago, the man still golfs with his Prep friends, partied for five days straight with classmates during his fiftieth reunion, and supports Prep football all these years later. Students, realize the significance of this. Although at times you may curse it, complain about it, and want it to be over, the Prep will always have an indelible mark on your hearts. And although I hesitate to use the word since it has become essentially a marketing buzzword around here, I?ll say it. You?ve entered into a brotherhood for life. Be proud of that. The impact of the Prep doesn?t hit you for a while. At times you?re simply trudging along. You watch some classmates transfer and may even question your commitment.

S: What do you look forward to at school this year? M: There are so many things coming up. Like, the mixer, last week. It was so great to be able to see young people coming in and being able to let their hair down and have fun. To see them just be able to interact in a public, fun setting, off their phones, and establishing relationships. So, to me that is something I?m

The Prep demand greatness. It is both a marathon and a sprint. But still, do not endeavor to simply ?get through it?. The opportunities the Prep affords you are invaluable. Do not be afraid to take advantage of each and every single one. If you wait for the
