Pr ep Hock ey Ear n s Elu sive Tit le of " Spor t " Edit or ial: By Ryan Gill '17 an d Joh n Kr om ch ad '17 When looking back at the history of St. Joe?s Prep, years such as 1851, 1966, and 2016 are considered landmark years. 1851 being the year that the Prep was founded, 1966 was the year a fire burnt down two-thirds of the school, and 2016 is the year ice hockey became an official school sport at the Prep. Yes, that?s correct, every time that you came out to the Skatium to support the boys for Pink the Rink, or a primetime Friday night game against Lasalle or Malvern, it was considered a club activity. I can imagine your disbelief if this is news to you. The architects of phrases like ?doh?, ?aha?, ?shoot?, ?yams?, ?prolly?, and unfortunately the

source of a few teams inserting the letters ?PR? in front of the name of the sport, were not considered members of a school run program. I know what you?re thinking, that game last year at the Skatium that your girlfriend begged

you to bring her to was actually considered a club activity. So in conquering your fear of bringing her to see 20 of the most athletic and handsome students the Prep has to offer as they put on a show for the entire Prep community, I?m sure

you also realized that Prep Hockey is undeniably among the most respected and entertaining sports the Prep has to offer. Also known as the ?best looking team this side of the Mason Dixon?, Prockey is comprised of one

varsity and two JV teams totaling approximately 60 players. Led by a staff of eight coaches, including three prep alumni, the head coach of the varsity team, David Giacomin and founder of the organization and head coach of the JV Crimson team JP Colussi, have provided direction and leadership for the team over the past four years. Prep hockey has been a successful participant in the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League (ICSHL) winning the Presidents Cup in 2015 at the JV level and making it to the semi-finals of the AAA bracket of the Flyers Cup in 2016. The Prep is a member of the prep division including rivals such as Holy Ghost, Malvern, and LaSalle. ICSHL provides incredible competition

Th er e's a New Sh er if f in Tow n , A Q&A Wit h New Assist an t Dean Ran dy M on r oe By Joe Scot t '19 There is a new face in the St. Joe?s Prep administration. Assistant Dean Monroe began working at the Prep just this year. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with him about his time so far. Scott: How has the Prep treated you so far? Monroe: I like the Prep, I think it?s a special place. From the students, to the faculty it is a group of great people. And I think we all have a common goal, which is to teach and touch the lives of the young people at the Prep, and help prepare them for life after St. Joe?s Prep. It was something that really intrigued me, and I wanted to be a part of the success that this school has instilled in

so many young people, for such a long time. S: Where specifically has that been evident here? M: I see that in the Alums. I see a lot of the people that Coach Morris has coached, they are in business, some coach professionally overseas. There are mayors that have graduated. So, there is a reputation for people who have come here succeeding and withstanding the test of time. You want to be a part of something like that, because it says a lot about the organization itself. S: What is your goal here at the Prep? M: My thing is to come in everyday and try to impact these young people. To me, there is no greater satisfaction

than to see young people succeed. That can be in the classroom, or on the basketball court, that could be in every club. Every day, showing signs of growth, and maturity. I love that, that?s why I chose to work with young people.

Last Friday night as I made my way into the Prep vs. Wood football game, I met a Prep alum from the class of 1965. He began to tell me stories of his time at the Prep and although I was at first impatient to get into the stands, I took a moment to talk with him. One line he said stuck with me: ?I had friends who went to Cardinal Dougherty and LaSalle and that?s all good and fine. But LaSalle is for four years, the Prep is for life?. Although he graduated fifty-one years ago, the man still golfs with his Prep friends, partied for five days straight with classmates during his fiftieth reunion, and supports Prep football all these years later. Students, realize the significance of this. Although at times you may curse it, complain about it, and want it to be over, the Prep will always have an indelible mark on your hearts. And although I hesitate to use the word since it has become essentially a marketing buzzword around here, I?ll say it. You?ve entered into a brotherhood for life. Be proud of that. The impact of the Prep doesn?t hit you for a while. At times you?re simply trudging along. You watch some classmates transfer and may even question your commitment.

S: What do you look forward to at school this year? M: There are so many things coming up. Like, the mixer, last week. It was so great to be able to see young people coming in and being able to let their hair down and have fun. To see them just be able to interact in a public, fun setting, off their phones, and establishing relationships. So, to me that is something I?m

Tebow, former Denver Broncos and New York Jets Quarterback, has recently tried out and was signed to the New York Mets minor league team. "This was not something that was driven by marketing considerations or anything of the sort,? said Sandy Alderson, the Mets general

Ou t of Deat h , Lif e: Baby Gor illa Bor n Th r ee M on t h s af t er Har am be's Deat h By Ryan Bresl in '17 On Wednesday August 26th, 92 days after the death of Harambe, the Peco Primate Reserve at the Philadelphia Zoo was blessed with a new resident. Honi gave birth to a second offspring but her first with new companion

Motuba. The two Western lowland gorillas, Honi and Motuba, will raise their baby along with zookeepers and another female gorilla, Kira. The Philadelphia Zoo has stated that the name of the gorilla will be decided via an

online poll, with the options of said poll chosen by zoo staff. This has caused some controversy as many people thought that the public was going to be able to submit names for the baby. The zoo has yet to release pre-selected names for the poll as

they are unsure of the gender of the baby. Mother gorillas typically keep their offspring close to their chest for two to three months after birth to ensure the safety of the baby, making it difficult for zoo staff to determine the sex. Hopefully, the zoo

staff will pay homage to the late, great primal playmate, Harambe. In Swahili, Harambe means working together, pulling together, helping each other, caring, and sharing? a quintessential summation of our city?s culture, making the name fitting for a gorilla living in the Philadelphia Zoo. The Philadelphia Zoo?s keeper blog speaks about the consideration of the name Harambe here: ?We have been asked if Harambe is one of the choices being considered. Right now, we are solely focused on the wellbeing and care of mother and baby. Our focus is nurturing this new family and celebrating this incredible birth. No names have yet been decided?. This

I?m also hoping to get to know some of the young men on the basketball team. S: Will you be working directly with the basketball team? M: Yes, I will be assistant basketball coach with Mr. Morris. I?m very excited about that. It?s kind of full

Then I was assistant with him [sic] at La Salle University and now I?m back with him at the Prep, so I?m very excited for that. When asked what he would say to the students as advice for the best possible high school experience, he told me to cherish these days. ?I think that

young people have to cherish every single day at a place like this, because whether they realize it or not, they are being taught valuable lessons, they are establishing relationships that they?ll have for the rest of their lives. Cherish these days, and you will leave a legacy behind.?

Monroe resigned from UMBC with a career record of 85-160.

memories of a recent debacle in which the name of the UK?s new Polar Research Ship was to be named ?Boaty McBoatface,? as chosen by popular vote, but was conservatively named the ?RRS Sir David Attenborough?. One might encourage the Zoo staff to follow the example of the environmentalist organization, Greenpeace, who recently allowed a whale to be named ?Mister Splashy Pants? after a name was chosen via an online poll. Obviously, the most important consideration here is that the new addition to the Philadelphia Zoo is treated with the respect and dignity that a critically endangered Western lowland gorilla deserves.

Elect ion Recap: Hillar y an d Tr u m p M ar ch on Tow ar ds Novem ber By John Figge ?18 Over the summer, politics usually take a break, but now that election season has started, the race for president is becoming even more heated. After the Republican National Convention, Trump momentarily gained in the polls, but soon fell behind after the Democratic National Convention,

which gave Democratic Nominee Hillary Clinton a large lead, according to the New York Times poll average. However, the gap has been narrowing since then and they are currently within 3 points of each other. Donald Trump suffered large losses after the Democratic Convention, but has since shifted the focus

of his campaign and regained some ground. Trump?s campaign shift also led him to make fewer inflammatory remarks which cause him to lose supporters and get caught up in arguments. He has held steady in the polls after mid-August when he replaced his campaign manager, who was linked to pro-Russian leaders in Ukraine, according to CNN. "I believe we?re adding some of the best talents in politics, with the experience and expertise needed to defeat Hillary Clinton in November," Trump said in a statement to ABC News. Hillary Clinton was leading Trump after the Democratic Convention, but his campaign shift helped to close the gap and they are almost tied at the moment.

I tried to power through it but even I had to admit that maybe a few days of rest would do me good." Clinton took 3 days off from campaigning to recover, allowing Trump to close the gap even more.

"You can't win the presidency if you're not in that game," which places him in a position where he needs to qualify for the debates. However, the minimum amount of support needed to participate in the polls is 15% in national polls, which would make Johnson ineligible. Since the first presidential debate is

approaching fast, Johnson?s chances of participating in the debates are decreasing. Trump and Clinton would benefit without Johnson, because they would stand to gain support as he loses it. Each candidate is trying to gain a commanding majority of the polls before election day on November 8.

Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate, has become a major third party candidate and has nearly 10% of the vote, making it harder for Trump and Clinton to take a major lead in the polls. Because of his presence in these polls, a movement was started to let Johnson be part of the 3 presidential debates, the first of which is on September 26. According to Johnson in a CNN interview,

Outside of league play, in recent years the varsity and JV teams have travelled outside of the state for competition. The varsity team has also participated and defeated premier teams from across the nation in the Jamestown Invitational Showcase, and were accompanied by the JV teams at the Purple Puck Tournament in Washington, D.C. This year however marks the first year that team gets to compete as a school sport. So what exactly changes for Prep Hockey? The first major change is the varsity team will be making a trip to the University of Notre Dame for a tournament hosting excellent competition from across the country this January. Also, both JV teams will face-off at the Wells Fargo Center

this season. From a coaching standpoint, Head Coach Dave Giacomin shared his expectations on the upcoming season, ?I think with a large nucleus of returning players, my expectations are very high, and as always we are shooting to win a championship. Entering two tournaments, and there?s no reason why we shouldn?t win the Purple Puck, and the competition in the other tournament should be great too. It should also prepare us for the stretch at the end of the season before the Flyers Cup.? From a player?s perspective, varsity captain Mark Centrella ?17 said, ?I?m really excited about hockey becoming a school sport for the first time. Over the past few years, the hockey team has earned its spot as one of the top teams in the city. I think that we will be a sport that

brings immediate success to the school, and I can?t wait to prove ourselves this season.? But for head coach of the JV Crimson squad, this moment is especially significant to Coach JP Colussi. JP Colussi, class of 2005 founded the hockey team at the Prep with his fellow classmates Mike Winton ?05 and Ryan Pierce ?02 who now join him at the Varsity and JV level as coaches. When asked about what it means to the team, Coach Colussi said, ?The program has truly arrived. We started with one team with different talent levels, and now, to see three teams with three different talent levels that is recognized as a major contender in the Philadelphia area shows that team has come full circle.? For the upcoming year, Coach Colussi included, ?I think that with the

Members of the 2015-16 Prep Hockey Team pictured above support of the school I think we will be able to attract the top academic and athletic talent in the area to assure that Prep Hockey will remain a contender in the Flyers Cup for years to come?. Head Coach of the Varsity team, David Giacomin added, ?Part of the reason we did so well was because of the

incredible support we have had. Especially two years ago when we played in the Flyer?s Cup championship. The Skatium was absolutely electric, and if we can have that support this year, I?m sure we will be able to play at a higher level.? Be sure to support the team in its inaugural season as a member of the Prep?s

Cr oss Cou n t r y Dr eam s Big As Th ey Appr oach Th e New Season By Nick Pal ermo '18 The 2016-17 SJP Cross Country team is coached by the beloved Curtis Cockenberg and captained by Joe Console ?17, Mike Maransky ?17, Jack Campbell ?17, and Luke Arizin ?17. Unlike previous years, the cross country team gained a large amount of new runners prior to cuts being made by other fall sports teams. Joe Console said, ?This year we have the most freshman to come out before soccer and golf cuts in a significantly long time, according to the great Coach Cockenberg.? Console and the other captains expect these freshman to push themselves to set a good foundation for the years after their time. Although happy about the future of their team, the captains have not forgotten to set their sights high for this year's goals.

Console explained how he wants his team to qualify for the State Championships in Hershey. ?The Prep has never done this to my knowledge, at least not in Coach Cockenberg's era. To do so, we would have to beat out either Cardinal O'Hara or LaSalle at the district meet, because the rule in districts is that the top 2 teams be then subsequent top 10 individual runners qualify for the State Championship Meet.? The only significant competition for The Prep are Cardinal O?Hara, LaSalle, and Roman Catholic. O?Hara and LaSalle are both ranked top five in the state. Those expected to assist in dethroning these two powerhouses are listed by Console, ?We are looking for big seasons out of Charlie Nugent '17, Steve McClellan '17, James Brooks '18, Keenan Fiorillo '18, Calvin

Th er e's St ill Room on Th e Wen t z Wagon : Eagles Look To Im pr ove Af t er A Disappoin t in g Year By Michael Enright '18 Avid fans of the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2015-16 season were treated to a cruel mixture of emotions. From initial excitement to anger to hopelessness, the season left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

Nothing seemed to go right for ?The Birds? as they ended the season with a 7-9 record and a lineup and coaching staff who were burnt out and without a playoff bid. Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman decided that the team needed a

rebuild. After firing Chip Kelly in December of 2015, before playing the final game of the season against the New York Giants, the Eagles were now in the hunt for a new coach as well as new, young players. Former Chiefs Offensive Coordinator, Doug Pederson was

later chosen to fill the head coaching void. Most of the players picked up from the offseason of 2015 were let go after the season ended for the Eagles. Among them was former rushing title holder, Demarco Murray, longtime Eagle, Riley Cooper, veteran linebacker DeMeco Ryans, and Mark ?Butt Fumble? Sanchez. There was a lot of rebuilding to be done as the draft approached.

Perhaps the most drastic move was the trading of Sam Bradford to the Vikings and the promotion of Wentz to the starting role. On September 11th, the long-awaited kickoff of the new

season, finally was upon the Eagles fanbase and the tension was palpable. Eagles fans were worried to see how the new Eagles team would do after undergoing a total overhaul in the offseason, with a new head coach and new rookie starting quarterback. But as the game went on, these

Pr ep Soccer Tak es t h e Field By Ronan Egan ?18 This year?s Prep soccer team has very high expectations for this season. After a week of vigorous tryouts, the team was chosen Monday, August, 22. The team consists of 11 seniors, 9 juniors, and 3 sophomores and is led by senior captains Christian Coney ?17,

Andrew Bracken ?17, and Christopher Hibbs ?17. Under their leadership, the team headed into its opening weekend of games at a tournament at Abington High School. While the games were just scrimmages, Captain Coney believed that the squad was looking great on the field, saying, ?We played awesome; the first team was moving the ball very well and when the subs were put in they were shredding the other teams, too.?

Manager Dean Domingo '17.

After that weekend of confidencebuilding soccer, the team rolled

into the PCL with high expectations. Their first opponent was the defending PCL champs, Roman Catholic. After going down at halftime, the Prep team rallied on a motivational speech by the coach at halftime. By the end of regulation, the team had come back to tie the score at 2 goals a piece. Eventually, Roman wore down the Prep team and won in the second half of overtime. While the loss will hurt, Coney believes that it was an important game to have because it proved that they are just as good as any team in the PCL. Their second game of the season against Father Judge did not go as well as the first. The team came out to a flat start and held on during the first half before falling off the

That game served as a sort of wake up call for the team, who looked to rebound after the bad loss to Judge with a

game against Archbishop Wood. After a hard fought first half, the Prep was trailing 1-0, and attempted to mount a comeback in the second half. They threw everything that they could at the Wood defense, but let in a goal in the 90th minute to drop the game 2-0.

Ryan Loch t e: Pr ivileged Fr at Boy or M isgu ided You t h ? By Liam Grugan ?19 As the human race has matured, so too has our intellect. Some of the more famous innovations include Benz?s car, Bell?s telephone, and Ochoa?s pen clip. Ryan Lochte stands with the Dark Ages as an outstanding example of our ability to reverse the gears of progress. Though most two year-olds will tell a parent if they steal a cookie, Lochte, a thirty-two year-old man, was afraid to confess to his mother that he had drunkenly vandalized a gas station. Instead, he concocted an entire story involving a robbery, fake police, a gun, Sharks, Jets, and flawless choreography. His mom called the police, they visited Lochte, and, rather than telling the truth, the swimmer chose to falsify his police report in order to preserve his

When an athlete can no longer support these ideals, the only reasonable course of action is to reconsider the endorsement. Lochte acted offensively toward the people of Brazil while officially representing the United States as a part of Team USA. The resulting international publicity disaster could only be made worse if he were to drive an F-150 through the Christ the Redeemer statue, draped in the American flag. How could a urinating vandal like Ryan Lochte honor the messages of companies like Speedo? The business was founded with a focus on creeping out strangers at the beach, not lying about defiling a public restroom.

USA, Ralph Lauren, Airweave, and a hair removal company. The punishment from US Swimming was nothing more than a slap on the wrist, as he will only miss one major meet.

Lochte cannot successfully advertise a product if he is publicly incapable of gracefully handling his own personal affairs. Speedo, Ralph Lauren, and other companies that dropped the swimmer were all acting not to punish Lochte, but to ensure that their respective names would not be damaged by his mistakes. Lochte?s actions, if not addressed, had the potential to set these businesses on a dark path.

Unless scientists manage to pioneer the indestructible bathroom, such a poor role model cannot be

endorsed by even a single major company. In a society that is so dictated by consumerism, it is important for companies to maintain a clear moral compass in their dealings. Ryan Lochte demonstrated reckless behavior, and the swimmer?s former

sponsors were forced to make the only reasonable decision: to drop him. The entire ?Ryan Lochte Scandal? only verifies the level of care with which high profile individuals must act publicly.

Besides his obvious liability issues, Lochte is indicative of another issue. He is the spitting image of every major American stereotype: big, dumb, and selfish. This only serves to justify the prejudice against the United States. Furthermore, if companies were to stick by Lochte through his issues, what could it mean for the current

However, losing his sponsorships was completely unwarranted and served no purpose other than to make headlines. After he was caught in a lie, details supporting his story were ignored

More details were uncovered in the days after the initial report, and it seemed as if Lochte and the other swimmers had made the whole story up; in fact, they were wanted by the Brazilian Police for falsely reporting a crime. As a result of this scandal, he not only was suspended for 10 months by US Swimming, but he also lost all four of his major endorsements: Speedo

In the surveillance video, there isn?t any evidence of destruction; in fact, it shows them being approached in a car by a man, who presumably is a security officer, pointing a gun at them and ordering them out of the car. Sage Din in g Tak eover By Liam Scot t '17 With the happy exception of Wawa drinks and Francine, the Prep cafeteria has been drastically altered since the beginning of this academic year. Here?s a look into four major changes with positive and negative takes from the student body on our new food provider: Sage Dining. Food Positive: The food is undeniably better with SAGE than with Aramark. With more daily options, fresher ingredients, and an overall improvement in food quality, SAGE is far above the former provider. One of the best additions in terms of food is the large array of condiments and sauces open to everyone. Instead of Aramark?s sole ketchup and mustard options, SAGE has introduced honey mustard, BBQ sauce, Sriracha, and much more. Negative: In years past, the classic Prep lunch has been a

simple ?buffalo chicken wrap? from Aramark. If you ask for one from SAGE, they will unfortunately tell you about their lack of buffalo sauce at the sandwich station, thereby striking an institutional classic from the menu. Winner:

SAGE

Beverage Positive: SAGE has presented the Prep with more Wawa drink options including: extra sweet tea, apple juice, orange juice, and more. A Gold Peak Tea machine, a sports drink dispensing soda fountain, iced coffee, fresh lemonade and even ?Spa Water? have also made an appearance this year. However, none of this compares to SAGE?s biggest win yet: the Hershey?s milkshake machine. Negative: Aramark had soda. In a way, this could be seen as a positive because it moves in a healthier direction, but some

Prep students miss the crisp taste of a cold Mountain Dew as a 5th period pick-me-up. Winner:

SAGE

Payment Positive: In attempts to speed up the payment process, an ?Express Lane? for PIN only has hit the scene this year. Additionally, SAGE presents customers with an expansive array of dessert and snack items

right at the payment screen for quick purchases. Negative: Many students find that it takes longer to buy food with SAGE, even with the ?Express Lane.? However, the largest headache that SAGE has brought to the payment process is the checkout software?s inability to put ?change on.? Aramark had the ability to put whatever change you would

receive from your purchase directly onto your account, a feature that many Prep students had come to rely on. Winner:

Aramark

After School Positive: SAGE serves actual meals after school, rather than just snacks. Sometimes that hunger can hit after 8th period more than during your lunch, and

SAGE can handle that. SAGE keeps the whole dining room open after school and you can buy almost as much after school as you can buy during lunchtimes. Negative: A large portion of the Prep student body feels nostalgic about the loss of Chief?s Place. What was once a busy after school destination has become a desolate, unused window in the middle of the dining hall. It is hard for many students to say goodbye to such a long withstanding Prep snacking tradition. Winner:

Tie

Overall, SAGE Dining Services has raised the bar when it comes to lunch at the Prep, with a couple of noticeable trade-offs. When asked which company she preferred, Francine responded, ?You know hun, I miss saying ?change back or change on??, but I think SAGE is better.?

Sage brings much-needed respite from Aramark food options.

Olym pics in Rio: In t er n at ion al Gaf f e? By Thomas Dint ino ?19 The 2016 Rio Olympics were interesting to say the least. The United States both took home more medals and destroyed more gas station bathrooms than any other country. Despite this success from The Land of the Free, Rio was a terrible location to host the Olympics due to its

instability, polluted areas, and Zika outbreak. In fact, a Dataforma poll shows that half of Americans and half of Brazilians opposed the Olympics' host city. Leading up to the games, the vice-governor of Rio assuringly proclaimed, ?The financial crisis has brought several difficulties in essential

public services and it could cause the total collapse of public security, health care, education, urban mobility and environmental management.? Brazil was also in the process of impeaching its president, Dilma Rousseff, for manipulating government accounts. Rio scores a ?critical?

The picturesque view Rio campaigned was a far cry from the reality athletes were greeted with.

crime rating from the Bureau of Diplomatic Security due to its murder rate per capita, which is the 28th highest in the world. Robbery also posed as a threat to visitors, including an anonymous athlete from Great Britain who was jumped while returning to his/ her housing. Public areas in Rio are also a mess. One fifth of the city?s inhabitants dwell in slums. Some of Rio?s poor were forced from their neighborhoods, which were turned into stadiums. Scientists also discovered that Rio?s coast is a petri dish for a drug resistant ?super bacteria.? A mutilated foot was spotted at Copacabana beach, the host of the beach volleyball tournament. Olympic pools also turned green due to

growth of ?organic compounds?. In addition, Brazil has twenty open defecations per square kilometer, literally making it a cesspool. The Zika virus may have also reached its height in Brazil. Recorded Zika cases in Brazil were close to 100,000 a few months before the games. Rio experienced three times more cases than any other state in the country. Hope Solo, the USA women?s soccer goalie, boasted on Twitter the mosquito repellant devices she would bring to Rio, prompting soccer fans to scream ?Zika? at her during games. In addition to the unpleasant venue, some Olympians faced discrimination. The Lebanese team officer blocked the Israeli

team from entering a bus to the stadium. A Saudi judo competitor dropped out of a match to ?Avoid Israel.? An Egyptian judo fighter refused to shake hands with an Israeli, resulting in him being sent home. Rio de Janeiro was a disaster, which could be why there was difficulty in selling tickets to the events. South Korea appears to be a better venue for the 2018 Winter Olympics, although there are already petitions to relocate the games. Hopefully the International Olympic Committee investigates future venues more closely to prevent more dangerous, polluted, and disease-affected areas from hosting hundreds of thousands of tourists.

All St an d f or t h e Nat ion al An t h em ? By Liam Gibbons ?18 On August 26th for the third time before an NFL preseason game, Colin Kaepernick, backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, sat during the national anthem. His silent protest was caught in a photo posted on Twitter by journalist Jennifer Lee Chan. The internet took notice and after the

game the press asked him why he sat. Kaepernick responded, ?I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.? Kaepernick?s protest is in response to the issue of alleged racial

inequality and police brutality towards the African American community which has been so prevalent in American media. Around the country, debate is widespread about the method of his protest. Since then, a still-growing group of athletes including US soccer?s Megan Rapinoe and players from six NFL teams

Kaepernick takes a knee during the national anthem as a protest.

By Marco Sammart ino ?18 ?Please rise for the national anthem?. Or don?t. At least, that?s what a certain quarterback has to say. Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem during a preseason game against Green Bay. He did this because he feels minorities are oppressed in the United States and feels as if they do not have a voice to speak out on this oppression. When asked if he would stand for the national anthem again, he responded, ?When there's significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand.? (ESPN). The NFL responded, ?In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose

and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem." (NFL). It seems as if everyone has an opinion on this, and the gesture has divided the nation more than it has unified it. Celebrities, government officials, and other athletes all have weighed in on this controversial topic. Even the president has had his say, claiming that Kaepernick was ?exercising his constitutional right?.

Another take is that Kaepernick is downright wrong, that he is disrespecting the flag and what it stands for. Yet some claim that while they disagree with his motives and what he is doing, Kaepernick has every right to do so under the Constitution and NFL rules.

have sat, knelt, or raised a fist in solidarity with Kaepernick, many during the NFL?s opening weekend. This corresponded with the fifteenth anniversary of the attacks on 9/ 11/ 2001, drawing stark backlash online and in the media. President Obama, thirty-five military veterans, and the Prep?s Dean Albert Green have recently emphasized American?s first amendment rights under the Constitution to not stand for the national anthem in a peaceful protest of the status quo. The President said, ?Sometimes it?s messy, but that?s the way democracy works.? The veterans in support of Kaepernick wrote, ?There is no finer form of appreciation for sacrifice than for Americans to enthusiastically exercise their freedom of speech.? Back at the Prep Dean Green said, ?It?s good

So, while you may have your own opinion and it may differ from the person?s next to you, there is one thing that everyone can agree on: it has got everyone thinking. Even if you don?t know exactly what to think about, Kaepernick?s stance is promoting deeper thought and open

for young people like Kaepernick to be politically active, that?s what our country is supposed to be about.? Some, notably NFL quarterback Drew Brees, have claimed that Kaepernick?s methods are inappropriate and disrespectful to veterans and the military, advocating for a different form of protest. Brees is quoted as saying, ?I agree with his protest, I don?t agree with his method.? For a large percentage of Americans, (including Brees) the national anthem is a reminder of those who have served the country and suffered for it. Because of this, Kaepernick?s protest makes these people uncomfortable and upset at what is viewed as disrespect for those who have fought. The counter-argument for this point, which is found almost verbatim in his Letter from

discussion in a time that this country needs to look at itself and establish an unifying identity. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and without respect for one another?s beliefs, positive and necessary discussion can?t be possible. So, next time you see ESPN run a story on

Birmingham Jail, was written by none other than Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.: ?I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not [? ] the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to 'order' than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ?I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action?" Whether or not one agrees with his methods, Kaepernick and others will continue to protest over the coming weeks, and this will most likely lead to a larger discussion about his message instead of his methods.

Colin Kaepernick, don?t just blindly respond with anger or hatred. Instead, stop and think of the deeper and more profound ramifications of what?s really going on. Have respect for other?s opinions, don?t be so quick to criticise, and just enjoy the game.

Many have disagreed with Kaepernick, saying that he has disrespected the flag, the military, the police force, and more. This particular situation has sparked lively and heated discussion from across the nation, with a plethora of viewpoints and approaches. One side argues that Kaepernick is absolutely right here, that he?s using his platform as a professional athlete and role model to raise awareness for a worthy cause.

An American flag is spread out over the field as part of a 9/ 11 NFL Tribute before a game.

Is " On e-St r appin g" St ill Cool? By Von Hobe '17 School is back in session, and many students are faced with the age-old question: ?How should I wear my backpack? I want to look cool in front of my peers, but what is the socially acceptable amount of straps to use?? The simpler answer adheres to the original purpose of a two-strapped backpack: Wear the backpack with one strap around each shoulder. This is clearly the more comfortable option, and does little to no harm on spinal alignment. However, this technique is not always viewed as the ?coolest? way to sport a knapsack. Around the early ?90s, students everywhere began to question if ?two-strapping it? was

Ned Bigby, author of The School Survival Guide and 'one-strap' enthusiast. becoming slightly outdated, and recognized the need for drastic social change. With the introduction of shows

like Degrassi and Ned?s Declassified, teen-show producers highlighted school trends of the 1990s the 2000s and made it

clear that using only one of the shoulder straps on a book-bag was the preferred approach during this time period.

This tendency was accentuated in the 2012 film, 21 Jump Street, when Channing Tatum?s character says to former high school

nerd, ?Hey, man. You gotta one-strap it [...] I would even no-strap it if that were a thing.? Tatum?s character gains his credibility by convincing the viewers that he was cool in high school, and that the nerd was not. Some say that the one-strap movement has unfortunately come to an end, but others believe that is a fluke, that it is here to stay. By gauging the recent susceptibility of Prep students to use one strap, the argument can be made for each side. However, if you?d like to avoid all confusion on which is cooler, do yourself a favor, and pick up a roller-bag.

Pok ém on Go Ou t side By David McCabe '19 This past summer every little boy?s and girl?s dreams finally came true when the long-awaited Pokémon Go came out. That?s right, everyone?s favorite trading card game, TV show, and video game is now a mobile game on smartphones. In case you?ve been living under a rock, Pokémon Go is a free-to-play, location-based, augmented reality game developed for Apple and Android devices. You travel anywhere in the world and use your phone?s camera to catch Pokémon. The objective of the game, just like before, is to ?catch ?em all?, all the Pokémon that is. Every single Pokémon is unique and can be found across the world, so you?ll have to travel far and wide to find what you?re looking for.

The game was released in the United States on July 6, 2016 and it was immediately a smash hit. Everyone was either playing it, about to play it, or about to lose their friends. Pokémon Go was so popular after its initial release that for a few days in July, according to The Independent, more people on the Internet searched for ?Pokemon Go? than they did for pornography. As of July 11 the game was the fifth most used app with Android users, not far behind Snapchat, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger.

landmarks can be restaurants or other businesses or even the Gesu Church. These businesses have been capitalizing on the increase of foot traffic by offering deals to those who play the game.

exploiting the capabilities of smartphones and location technology...we have helped users all around the world have fun, socialize, and get more fit as they play and explore.?

The goal of Niantic, the company partnered with Nintendo who developed the game, is ?to change the way people interact with the world around them by creating the world?s first ?real world gaming? platform. By

However, since the game has been released the usage has dropped dramatically. As of August 15 in the United States there were an estimated 34 million downloads but there are only about 30 million users still

playing. In the first 7 days after the game was released, there was an average of 4.4 million downloads per day, but in the following week the average came out to 1.6 million. At those rates, the game will be obsolete and virtually no one will be playing within a few months. But, the way Niantic plans to keep user interest up is by rolling out new updates and feature frequently.

Pokémon Go is revolutionary. This is the first mobile phone game which encourages people to go outside, socialize, and get fit while having fun. This past summer could very well be the beginning of a new genre of games. And in every genre there is a game-changer, some person or group to stand up and say ?We?re different and we?re proud.? Pokémon Go is that game-changer.

The game?s use of location to influence your gameplay is a new and interesting concept. For example, there are Pokéstops and Pokémon Gyms at real-world landmarks. Sometimes

Edit or ial (con t .) right moment to get involved, you may find four years have got behind you and you have little to show for it. There is not time to hesitate. Start making the best of your Prep experience now. Steve Harwell, leading man of Smashmouth.

All St ar : Tim eless Love Let t er To Th e M oder n Dr eam er By Eamon '17

Gal l agher

Over the past year or so of my life, something has continually nagged my conscious. In today's world, it seems that the most revolutionary creation is an outdated trend. We seem to be trapped in a place dominated by the idea that new is better, and can be plagued by the disheartening thought that nothing is permanent. Even ideas and media that were peaking in the year of my birth, 1999, have all but died out. It seems very few things, in fact, have been able to survive for a week, let alone the last 17 years. In comes Steve Harwell, a personable, clean cut visionary. The man is nothing short of a musical prophet. The paragon of his righteous word manifests itself in his iconic band, Smash Mouth and through their paramount work: All Star. To a seasoned fan of this monumental creation, the opening riff is all too recognizable. On the other hand, placing myself in the shoes of someone who has never experienced the piece, the opening bars of the song seem quite different. Smash Mouth uses this opening to establish their band's style, and nothing more. There is nothing

grabbing or spectacular about this stripped down, contemporary rock chord progression layered on top of a simple base drum. So why do they begin like this? Smash Mouth knows that the solid structure and innovative saga told throughout the rest of the song does their work for them; good music speaks for itself. Allow me to elaborate on the chronicle constructed throughout the song. Immediately following the intro, Harwell establishes his role as an underdog through the use of a metaphor: ?I ain?t the sharpest tool in the shed.? In the following lines of the opening verse, he even describes an experience in which a girl (who remains unidentified) calls him a loser. Not only does he use these troubling opening lines to elaborate on a humble beginning, but also produces something of an antagonistic element. The standards of society seem to pose something of a crisis for Harwell and the gang, and the individuals around them have come to a consensus that these ignorant rebels will never meet these standards. At this point, the listener may be questioning the lighthearted

unwavering tone of Steve Harwell. He doesn?t leave anyone in suspense for too long, though, before launching into his crucial hook and chorus. Here we really get to the root of Smash Mouth?s philosophy. Harwell's lyrics hit on a very genuine itch. These lyrics aren?t about proving the people who called you ignorant wrong, it's about embracing your ignorance. Smash Mouth asks what can you learn in school that you can?t learn being out in the world having fun, and possibly making bad decisions? In their words, ?Didn't

accepted that their carefree lifestyle is one that will, from time to time, continue to leave a sour taste in the mouth of those who prefer a more conventional way of life. A crucial shift occurs when Harwell relates the experience of a confrontation with a hitchhiker. Perhaps, up until this occurrence, Harwell had qualms about whether or not he should play by the rules. When this hitchhiker displays the same sentiment,

attempting to leave town with no desire to go back, Harwell finally realizes how powerful this idea is. He was never isolated in his defiant tendencies. His attitude towards life is one we have all wished of embracing every now and again. This is why All Star is so powerful. It allows us to vicariously live through the band. For 3 minutes and 56 glorious seconds, we are no longer sitting at a desk or driving through rush hour traffic. For that brief

euphoric time period, we are visualizing our aspirations and passions. Even if just for a moment, the desire to drop everything and ?hit the ground running? just like Harwell is all too real. That exact feeling is exactly why All Star has lived on while so many other artists, songs and albums of the same era have faded away. All because deep down, we need Steve Harwell to tell us one thing: ?Keep dreaming.?

make sense not to live for fun, your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb.? The less you care about the way people think, the happier you?ll be. Follow your dreams and you can never go wrong. The second verse provides us with more of the same. Smash Mouth tells us that this new way of thinking allows us to roll with the punches of any size throughout our life, but what I really want to focus on is the final verse. Here is where the band truly immortalizes itself and is living proof that their music will live on forever. For the entire song, up until this moment, the band has

Peter and the Starcatcher: Cape an d Sw or d Tak es t o t h e Seas By Dan Morrow ?18 With school back in session students all know what to expect: new teachers, homework, long nights of studying, and, of course, Cape and Sword?s Fall Show. This

season, the entire Prep community will be looking forward to Cape and Sword?s first production of the 2016-2017 school year: Peter and the Starcatcher. This comedic prequel to Disney?s Peter Pan is one of the most highly

anticipated events of the fall. Auditions were held on September 12th with callbacks the following day. With 36 students trying out for the 19 roles, there was an evident sense of excitement among

those auditioning. ?I think we?re all excited to be back. I?m looking forward to it. It?s good to see everyone back here after the summer ready to get back at it,? says Paul Koenig ?18. Last year, Cape and Sword put on performances of Little Me and 13 Days in October: Kennedy?s Crisis. ?It?s very different,? says Koenig. Based off of previous performances, there is no doubt that Cape and Sword will thoroughly entertain all those in attendance. Having worked with Cape and Sword for 23 years, director Tony Braithwaite ?89 is very enthusiastic for the upcoming show.

Peter and the Starcatcher set to open mid-November.

?It is very funny and very creative the way it tells the story,? says Braithwaite, ?It has very creative uses of

transformative props that make storytelling fun.? Braithwaite is certain that Peter and the Starcatcher will measure up to previous shows put on by Cape and Sword: ?I?m confident it will do well. I think for people who know Prep shows well, it will sort of be Kennedy?s meets One Man Two Governors.? Braithwaite describes how he came across this unique play: ?I look around, choose the show, and propose it to Mr. Zazyczny and Father Swope for approval. Peter and the Starcatcher is a show that was done in New York for the first time in five years. Three different people I know said it is a Prep show.? The key behind Cape and Sword?s success is countless hours of

practice and preparation. Before the final product, each component of the show is practiced separately and finally put together at once. ?I would say the most difficult part of putting a show together is a process we call tech, because tech is when we have to take the acting, the lights, the sets, the sound cues and we put them together with catlike precision,? explains Braithwaite. After months of practice, the Cape and Sword community puts on dazzling performances that fully entertain the audience. Overall, Peter and the Starcatcher is set be one of the greatest performances put on by Cape and Sword. The show will hit the Prep?s auditorium mid November.

may have missed, however, is that these two words also rhyme perfectly with the title of the song itself, Earned It.

However, Cozart, or how he?s more well known, ?Almighty Sosa?s? main influence is not felt in musical communities, but in the social and cultural

sphere. He is an upstanding role model for the youth of his hometown of Chicago. He famously has spoken out against drug use, especially for

In the year 1977, a golden record was launched into space on the Voyager spacecraft so that if any other life forms would find it, they could get a good indication of our culture. Many have discussed sending out a purple record, so that Sosa can be heard by all life forms, eternally. What a fitting end that would be for a man who truly deserves to be immortalized.

?The beat go off?? Mr. Keith Cozart, under the alias ?Chief Keef? is known for artfully crafting songs that are evolving the music scene we know today. Through lyricism that more resembles Poe than a stereotypical rapper, Mister Keef is constantly making his listeners think and question every last line. This is especially highlighted in his use
