The Force MD’s are an R&B group formed in 1981. They are best known for their classics “Love is a house”, “Tender Love”, and “Touch & Go” Interview by Teresa B. Howell // The Heat Seekers

Teresa B.: For some reason you guys keep floating around in the atmosphere of hip hop and people are playing your music over and over again. So I'm going to just start with the questions. How did you guys get started? Stevie D: Well, we got started. We're the first group actually to come out of Staten Island, New York. Most people know Wu-Tang Clan is one of the really big groups to come out of Staten. We came out before Wutang Clan, as you should know, and we started as young boys. We were mostly all related in the group Me tc, my brother Khalil and Jesse D, who started as the fantastic lds. We used to sing around our projects and win all the talent shows. We called ourselves LDS because me, TC and Khalil's, last name is Lundy, and my uncle, Jessie last name is Daniel, who is my mother's younger brother. So we were winning all the talent shows and me, myself, Stevie, I was split between two groups. I did the LDS doing the r and b, singing on the ferry, Staten Island Ferry. And I used to rap with a fellow by the name of Charles Mercury Nelson. They called him Mercury on Staten Island and his cousin DJ Dr. Rock. Later on I added my other cousin Kwan, but we were called the Force MCs, Dr. Rock and the Force MCs. We were the first act out of Staten Island also that came to the Bronx, Harlem Queens and showed them that we were always known as the Forgotten Borough of New York City. But we are the fifth borough of New York and we kind of warmed it up out there for all the people that came after us with rap because we started coming out there. People laughed, y'all from Staten Island, y'all can't rap. When he heard us, the mouth dropped like, oh wow, these guys are good. So we pretty much made a name for ourselves as Dr. Rocket of four Cs. That's the street part and the singing part, the fantastic lds. And we used to sing on the Staten Island Ferry impersonating all of our favorite artists. Of course The Mighty, mighty Jackson five. We did Stevie Wonder, we did Elvis Presley, even Frank Sinat. We mixed it all up. Did Sam Cook Earth, wind and Fire? We imitate all these groups while we used to sing on the Staten Island ferry, we got discovered. I don't know if you want to hear that part. THS: Yeah, we want to hear all about it because people have been asking questions about y'all now. So I need to hear everything that you got to say. Okay.

So me being in two groups, right, the Force M Cs and the lds. Now the Force MDs half. We was really getting our name warmed up in the streets like, yo, these guys from Staten Island are nice. They're good, man, you got a good harmonizing rap group. So I said, let Mercury come with us to this audition since our brother Khalil can't come let Mercury come. They said, all right, that's good man. Bring them so Mercury can hold a note. It's good. Perfect Mercury. And my cousin Kwan who was support some these, he went and did his thing on his own. He didn't want to do it, but we bring Mercury Mercury's the fourth member added on going to this audition to get this record deal. On our way to the audition, T. Pearson, who's the fifth member as you see on the album covers, he was in a group in Staten Island called Cook Corporation and they was like the second best thing there besides us. And he seen us going to the audition, Hey, where you guys going? So we going to this audition for this guy Tom Silverman because he's going to give us a record deal. He said he didn't realize that until we said the rap too. And once we did a rap routine saying our name, he said, stop the audition. Are you telling me you guys are force MCs too? Yes That's how we birth. We just one of the architects of r and b hip hop. That's why we brought that combination together, the r and b and the hip hops we ran for 'em and they said, Hey, I want to sign you guys right away. And that's how we got our record deal. And this is the key part. So says Tommy Boy Records says, what are you going to name yourself? You got four MCs and you got lds. What are you going to name yourself lds, stand for Lundies. That's the three brothers and Uncle Daniel. So we couldn't name ourselves the LDS anymore because you had two other guys now, R. Pearson and Charles Mercury Nelson, two different last names. So it wouldn't have been fair to say call us up the LDS and leave their last name initials out. So forced to cover up all the names and we couldn't say MCs because we didn't want everybody to think we just rappers, we just changed the C to AD and came to force MDs. That stands for musical diversity. That means we are versatile, we can rap, sing, tap, dance, break dance and all that. That's the story. TB:Wow. See that's the true story because that's not the story I heard, so I'm glad you explained it.

SD: That's the story from the oldest of the Temptations. lol TB: Okay, that's what I'm talking about. Temptations. So as being the oldest member and being around the longest, how old were you guys when you first started? SD:. We were 20, 21 when we first got on 20, 21. 20 was the youngest. I was 21 when we first made it this year. So add that up, TB: You'll be how old? SD: 60..Yeah. TB:No way. No way. Wow. That's a blessing. And so through the years you guys were steady performing, but then there was the loss of certain members. Can you tell us about who we lost during this time? SD: In our early years we had great tours, toured with New edition three times, Madonna, we had our do of touring and performing everywhere. We was known for giving an explosive stage show. That was our reputation explosive stage show. And during the years we started losing members. First member we lost was Mercury complications with sugar, diabetes. He had a heart attack, he rest in peace. Then it came my brother TC that's everybody, Antoine and Lundy. He passed away of Lou Garrick's disease. That was uncommon. We'd never expected that to happen. We thought it's about older people, but that has no name and no age to it. We lost tc, then we lost Trico. who passed away of cancer. And then last but not least, we lost Jesse. He also passed away of cancer. And I said, I vowed to them that no matter what, I'm going to keep the group going. So that when my brother TC passed, that's when my brother kil. Well, tc before TC passed, my brother Khalil already rejoined the group, came back to the group from the Moss, the Muslim. He came back to the group. That's why he sounds just like us because we are brothers. So he the group, we added other people, Sean Waters, Damon, Hayward, other people just to during the years people came and went, but his people just to keep the boat moving. So pretty much right now we are pretty solid. What we have right now, it's me, my brother Khalil and my sister's son, our sister's son, Zin Capers. He's a very talented singer. He has the sound and plus more with it. So we're happy about that.

TB:Okay, so rest in peace to all those that were lost. And thankfully it looks like you have a slew of siblings. So how many kids in the family?

TB: So what are you guys doing now In current day? SD:. We just got off the Tom join Cruise. That's not even two days ago. We just got the Tom join the cruise. That was incredible. Stevie Wonder, Lauren Hill, Charlie Wilson. But man, Ralph New audition was on there just chilling. We was now hanging out. So we all we good buddies and it was just so many acts on there. It was so good. And we performed, but us and Alexander O'Neill performed two nights straight, sold out. It was great, it was great. And we had just all the legendary rappers, sugar Hill Gang, furious Five Kid and Play Mr. Cheeks, KU OD, big Daddy King was all in. He had the female hip hop. You had Yo-Yo Mony Love Eddie, mixed it up with r and b, had Adina Howard, TB: You'll be how old? SD: 60..Yeah. TB: You've given us a lot of information about how you guys got started and what's going on with you guys. SD: Oh, this is information that definitely need to be known, that Tender Love, that's one of our biggest hits, size lovers, the house and all other songs. Tender Love is definitely our biggest crossover hit. That was of course was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the great Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who produced a whole slew of Acts, SOS band, blah blah blah. New edition. Alexander O'Neill, Sherell, Janet, this goes down the line. But Tinder Love was their first ever crossover. A top 10 hit out of all the records they made. Tender Love was the first to break that barrier and after Tender Love broke that barrier, the floodgates went out and everything followed. Alexander on the other Saturday, love If it Isn't Love followed after Tender Love when it crossed over Pop SOS band had it locked in the RB with all the after how we been through all that. But it never crossed over to the pop .

Podcast on the Rise Interview by Teresa B. Howell

Life by itself is difficult enough. Imagine having to go through it without someone to talk to & share your most inner thoughts with. Here at UN•THERAPY, we understand that although we aren’t professional therapists, sometimes just talking it out with friends makes life a lot easier. Join in on our weekly UN•THERAPY THURSDAY sessions as we analyze + discuss life, love, happiness & how we can help each other mature into the best versions of ourselves. Teresa B. Howell: Tell us about your awesome podcast? The UN•THERAPY: The UN•THERAPY journey is honestly a unique story by itself. Around July 2020, two things happened: I joined Clubhouse and began watching the newest season of Married at First Sight New Orleans. I know what you’re probably thinking. This is a super weird combo. So, as I began to watch Married at First Sight New Orleans, I would host Clubhouse rooms every Thursday after the show would premiere and act as a moderator for “live discussions” about what happened the previous night on the newest episode. Over time the Thursday night Clubhouse rooms would grow, and more people started joining in on the discussions consistently. After a while, we had a dedicated group of listeners which eventually migrated into creating a Facebook group to host mini discussions outside of the live discussions every week. About 12 weeks into hosting “live discussions,” someone said to me, “Jehan, you should start your own podcast.” At that moment in time, I was flat- tered, but I knew deep down, I knew absolutely nothing about podcasting. Weeks later, I began doing research on the best streaming platforms for podcasters, how to distribute, and overall, how to make a podcast successful. One week later, after I began my research, I hosted another “live discussion,” and there, I was able to identify co-hosts for my podcast. And then boom, UN- •THERAPY Podcast, was born. Every Thursday, a new episode is released, and the weekly discussions highlight trending top- ics in the news and media, pop culture, love, dating, mental health, and overall, strategies to become a better version of yourself.

TBH: Give us the demographics of your audience? UT: UN•THERAPY podcast touches a wide range of audiences. Statistics show that we have listeners worldwide from the United States to Germany and even in Ghana, just to name a few. As well as our listener base is mostly Millennial's. During every episode, we analyze + discuss life, love, happiness, and bring in relevant + current event discussions. Honestly, all of the topics that are discussed are transferable throughout many stages of life and our goal is to impact every person who tunes in. TBH: How long have you worked on this particular concept? UT: UN•THERAPY was more of a hit the ground running kind of thing. Once the concept was created, we began to record, and one week later the first episode was produced. Honestly, being multi talented made an entire world of difference as it pertains to podcasting. Creating my podcast was super simple because I started this journey already having vast knowledge of the media and communications industry, branding, marketing, graphic design, and most importantly, video and audio editing. Being able to complete all of those tasks myself eliminates needing a “middle man” and truly eliminates all start-up costs. TBH: What is your focus for each show? UT: The goal of each show is to bring an innovative and timely concept to our listeners that allows them to analyze the way that they currently think about certain aspects of life. More

importantly, create a safe space for an environment to listen to dialogue that offers a worldview on a variety of topics. TBH: Who makes the decisions on the topics discussed? UT: As a weekly podcast, we record new episodes every week to ensure that all our content is fresh + relevant. Within doing so as a group we toss ideas back and forth throughout the week. These ideas can come from social media, the news, anything pop culture, or situations that each of us is currently enduring. Before recording each session we decide on a topic right before we begin so everything that is said during each episode is truly organic, authentic, and not premeditated. TBH: Do you plan to create this podcast for multiple seasons? UT: Absolutely! UN•THERAPY will become a household name. We plan to continuously curate good content that illuminates our audiences for decades to come. My children will one day listen to UN•THERAPY and it will serve as a memoir of my life’s journey. TBH: What platforms do you use to get the word out to the public? UT: Social media has been the GOAT for UN•THERAPY. Currently, as our sole platform for advertising, we have been able to tap in and corner the market on ensuring that our brand is easily distinguished and recognized. As UN•THERAPY continues to grow, so will our outreach.

Sweet Tea Piper Huguley

Piper Huguley hits the ground running with her debut Hallmark Publishing novel, Sweet Tea. It is a total breath of fresh air with a since of home, history, and southern small-town charm and community. This refresh- ing read is set in a town, where everybody knows everybody with comfort and rich history, that if not careful, will soon be forgotten by the hustle and bustle of everyday life, changing of times, and people leaving on a quest for something new. Intellectual property attorney, Althea Dailey is a successful, independent, beautiful woman on the verge of making partner at her prestigious law firm in New York. Not to mention, he is a crafty cook, who knows his way around a kitchen with his mouth-watering cuisines. Connected to the high society of southern living, he rebels and runs to chase his own level of success and what makes him happy. His passion of cooking and the creation of a legendary documentary and cookbook of authentic southern food leads him to the presence of the famous cook of Milford College, Miss Ada Dailey. In a quest to discovering themselves and running from their past and in a sense, their reality and present truth, Jack and Althea, find themselves in a forced proximity that makes them both hard to resist. There is definitely an attractiveness that they did not see coming. They find themselves on a journey of self-awareness that leads to the past meeting the present, and on an expedition of saving and protecting a legacy. Despite a rocky meeting and preconceived assumptions, Althea finds herself being engulfed by the very presence and essence of Jack. There just may be more to Jack Darwent than meets the eye but she is sure to keep a close eye on him all for the sake of protecting her grandmother and family recipes. Connected by rebelliousness and determination to make their mark in the world in their own way is a per- formance of the Tango that neither Jack nor Althea saw coming. A little digging and investigation of one another, they find that they have a lot more in common as they journey on their quest to live out their truths. Their round and round, back and forth entanglement mixed with a few match maker moves from Grandda, brings for a delightful page-turner of a read. Michelle Chavis is an entrepreneur. She is an author. Her books and journals motivate her readers. She is also known for her ability to customize and design articles of clothing and accessories. However, if you ask Michelle what her pur- pose is, she will tell you it is to help see and birth their purpose. She is known as the purpose pusher. Let’s get to know the purpose pusher. LL: You are called the “Purpose Pusher.” What is the significance of the name? MC: I help push people, some unknowingly, toward their purpose and help them discover their passions. Some have called me a Life Coach. LL: How are you able to integrate your purpose and your passion? MC: Believe your passion is connected to your purpose, therefore me being passionate about the well being of others and seeing the greatness while also help them see that same greatness within themselves, brings me joy. LL: What has been your push to help others? MC: GOD has given me the gift of service. There is greatness in everyone. Sometimes, all people need to do is overcome their limits and keep moving towards their dreams is a little encouragement. I have naturally been able to recognize the potential in people therefore, helping to push them toward their goals. As long as we have a pulse , we have a purpose. LL:What does the term level up mean to you? MC: To go to a higher level and leave behind mediocre habits. LL How do you define success? MC: Success for me means having a balanced life. That begins with putting God first. LL: What are two key tips you want to leave with all new and upcoming entrepreneurs? MC: Entrepreneurship can be hard, demanding, with plenty of ups and downs. The most important thing is to remember your WHY . Something Sweet About Joy Interview by King Brooks

I have always been a romance junkie. I recently had the opportunity to chat with Joy Avery. I first came to know of Joy through her book In the Market For Love and I have continued to follow her work since then. So when I got the chance to interview her, I was overjoyed. Enjoy our Interview! King Brooks: Hi Joy, How are you? Joy Avery: Hi. I’m feeling favored and highly blessed. I hope the same for you. KB: Tell us about your new novel ‘Something So Sweet?’ JA: Absolutely. A small-town mayor confronts an old flame over the fate of a historic inn. Newcomer Quade Cannon is determined to sell the inn, while Mayor Lunden Pierce is determined to stop him by any means necessary. They travel on a fun journey filled with laughter and love. KB: Where did the idea for this story come from? JA: If you follow me on social media, you know I’m obsessed with glitter. My glitter dealer, as I call her, is a beekeeper. When I would visit her shop, there were always bees fly- ing around. I was so fascinated by the tiny creatures that I wanted to write a story with bees. Honey Hill was born. KB: How long did it take for you to write ‘Something So Sweet?’ JA: It took me about three and a half months to write the first draft of Something So Sweet. KB: ‘Something So Sweet’ is the first book in the “Honey Hill series.” What can we expect from this series? JA: Sweeter Than Honey, the second book in the Honey Hill series, will be released in June of this year. We will get to meet Rylee Harris, Lunden’s best friend, and Canten Barnes. I hope to pen several additional books in this series. KB: What do you want readers to take away from ‘Something So Sweet?’ JA: I want readers to walk away from Something So Sweet believing in second chances and the redeeming power of love. KB: Who is Joy Avery as a person and as an author? JA: Outside of writing, I’m a wife, a mother, a crafter. I operate a small business where I sell my handcrafted items. As an author, I like taking readers on what I refer to as love journeys. In my stories there‘s emotion, laughter, and a lot of love. As my tagline says: Real Characters. Real Journeys. Real Good Love. KB: When did the writing bug hit you? JA: The writing bug hit when I was very young. I used to write stories in crayon and animate them with stick figures. I initially wanted to pen a children’s book, but read my first romance and fell in love with the genre. I’ve been penning love stories ever since. KB: What keeps you coming back for more? (i.e. writing, telling stories) JA: All the characters swimming around in my head keeps me coming back for more. Along with the readers, who show tremendous support for my writing. That support keeps me motivated. I value my readers. As long as they keep pur- chasing, I’ll keep writing. KB: What advice would you give to an aspiring author? JA: The one piece of advice I’d give to an aspiring author is to BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? London Marie Rose: I am originally from Mobile Alabama, I ended up in PA because my stepdad was stationed here in the military. As an Adult, I decided to stay up in PA as there are so many modeling opportunities up North. I enjoy volunteer- ing and pageantry. DN: How long have you been in the modeling industry? LMR: I have been in the modeling industry for 2 years. This year I became serious about modeling. DN: What made you decide to be serious about modeling? LMR: I have always had a seriousness towards modeling, you can say that I took a more professional approach when I met my pageant coach. She has shown me so much about the mod- eling world and has been in this profession for more than 15 years. She has won so many awards and titles and has taught me so much about modeling and myself. DN: Which people or books have had the most influence on your modeling career and why? LMR: I really have been inspired by Tyra Banks’ modeling and her overall career. Another model I really enjoy is American singer, Cierra Wilson. Her modeling and how she conducts her- self is very beautiful to me! I look up to her very much. DN: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the modeling industry? LMR: Never start a project you cannot finish and be teachable, because you never know what you can learn. DN: Can you give us some examples of things you are doing or have done to expand your fanbase? LMR: I network a lot through my Instagram when I’m at a fash- ion event. As well as with fashion groups on Facebook. People do not realize that Facebook is a good networking avenue. I’m constantly looking for ways I can network. DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? LMR: My biggest failure in this industry for me was putting my career on hold for meaningless relationships. People come and go in your life, your career is with you always. DN: What advice can you give other young men and women who want to follow in your footsteps? LMR: Don’t get discouraged if you feel a project isn’t turning out right, take a step back and take a break. Come back to the project, finish it or start over. Never accept anything less, below standard and what your beliefs are. If something doesn’t sit well with you, go with your gut feeling. Always be honest.

DN: What does a typical day in your week look like? LMR: You can find me traveling for a shoot, a casting call or a pageant. I enjoy volunteering when I’m not working or shop- ping or in nature exercising. DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? LMR: I always ask myself, where do i see myself 10 years from now, which in 10 years I will be 30 years old. I do not want to look back and think of what I could have done, you can’t take time back, so I want to excel and go as far as I can with my career. DN: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? LMR: My goal and aspiration is to one day create my own mod- eling agency and have my own photography studio. I first came to know of Princess through Victoria Christopher Murray when they co-wrote a book together. It has been great watching her grow from being an author to own- ing her own bookstore. King Brooks: Hi Princess, How are you? Princess Gooden: I’m doing great! Thank you for the opportu- nity. It’s a blessing. KB: Please give the readers a brief bio on you as a person and author? PG: Author/writer, the Truth Heals Hurt Guru, motivational speaker, blogger, and Flipping Books & Stuff Bookstore owner. My favorite titles are child of God, wife and mother. KB: Please tell the readers about your bookstore Flipping Books & Stuff? PG: Flipping Books and Stuff (FB&S) is a family owned online bookstore that originated out of a passion for reading and sharing that same aspiration with others. The intent of FB&S is to supply new and used books to online customers at a discounted rate, facilitating their love for reading by offering more affordable prices than mainstream outlets. It consists of a vast inventory of new and used books from an array of genres and authors. I use all of the proceeds to help others. KB: Where did the idea for Flipping Books & Stuff come from? PG: I imagined the world with me doing everything I like. I saw myself working in a bookstore, meeting people everyday and writing during breaks. Books made me think I could have that life. I created that world for myself, so I thought. After making my first sale one of the pastors on Ebeye asked if I would be interested in assisting a child with their educational needs. He explained that the public schools were overcrowded, and the churches were stepping in. I was happy to assist. From that day on, I thought of ways to keep assisting. KB: Please tell the readers about your philanthropy that is tied to Flipping Books & Stuff? PG: So far we’ve paid for 15 students to go to private school on Ebeye in the Marshall Islands, provided 73 bibles (with other donations) to prisoners in different states, created a library in two children’s homes in Georgia, and donated books to local organizations in Newnan, Ga.

KB: What are your goals, hopes, and dreams for Flipping Books & Stuff? PG: To open a brick & mortar, and make enough money to send at least 10 kids to school in Ebeye, while providing opportunities to flip books in my local community. KB: What books are you currently reading? PG: Books for school. I attend Full Sail University. I’m pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts - Creative Writing for Entertainment. DJ Lucky Luck is a respected DJ and Promoter. His years of experience, industry knowledge, and big picture attitude have lead him to work with amazing artists such as Krizz Kaliko, Snow Tha Product, Lil Flip, Caskey, Don Trip, Three 6 Mafia, MO3, Boosie, Mystikal, Juvenile, Mya, H-Town, Bell Biv Devoe, Bobby Brown, Warren G, Xzhibit, Snoop Dogg, The Dogg Pound, Tyga, Tinashe, Baby Bash, Devin The Dude... and many more.

David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? DJ Lucky Luck: I started DJing when I was 18 years old. I had a love for it ever since I heard the scratching sound coming out of a turntable at 12 years old or so. I had a rap group that I was apart of that I just volunteered to DJ and rap. I went to school for computers and learned a lot about internet marketing, so I chose to apply that into promoting shows. DN: How long have you been a DJ? Promoting shows? DJLL: I’ve been DJing for 22yrs. I started dabbling with promoting around the same time I was promoting my own events and other events, but really got into it after college. I would say, somewhere about 2010 is when I really got involved in promoting bigger shows. DN: What made you decide to be serious about music? DJLL: It has always been a passion of mine… since 12 years old. I’ve always felt if you work hard at it, anything is possible. I started working the networks and avenues I needed to make it a possibility. DN: Who has had the most influence on your music career and why? DJLL: I’ve got a lot of national celebrity artist friends, as well as local friends and people I look up to. But, I would say one of the people who taught me some game in this industry would be, Lil Flip. He’s a good friend and businessman. DN: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music industry? DJLL: Persistence and Perseverance. DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? DJLL: There was an event I helped organize that the car denizer decided to pull the event last minute. There were 50 disgruntled artists who paid to get on the event. They have yet to receive their refunds. Now, I deal with the guilt that I introduced the people, even though it wasn’t my event solely. So, it doesn’t fall on me. I’ve learned that contracts go further than conversations.

DN: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? DJLL: Dream big, because anything is possible. It takes hard work and dedication to break through in this industry. DN: What does a typical day in your week look like? DJLL: Wake up. Respond to emails. Work on social media presence. Client meetings either in person or via Zoom. Scheduling and paperwork. DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? DJLL: I have a no-quit attitude. I’m in it for the long run. DN: What’s next for you? Promoting any shows? DJLL: A couple shows I’ve been helping with, but Covid has really strained the music entertainment industry. I’ve just been taking this time to spend with the family. DN: Please list your social media platforms. DJLL: DJluckyluck on all social media platforms. DN: What’s your all time favorite artist? David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Tito Montoya IV: My name is Tito, I go by Krazet33 The Emcee. I’m a fast rapping connoisseur of Hip Hop. One of those rare Hip Hop heads that does it for the love of music. I’m a mix of Twista, Busta Rhymes, and the East Coast lyricism. I beatbox, produce, and sing as well as do my own graphic design and promos. I double as a local Hip Hop promoter in Denver, Colorado and have brought out acts such as X-Raided, Mr. Pookie, The Luniz, Eternal of the Wu Tang Killa Beez, Michael 5000 Watts, Mad Squablz, and many more. I’m set to bring out master lyricist Locksmith, soon. Got connections to the East Coast, West Coast and all in between as far as promoter pull for main- stream artists. Sky is the limit, I do it for my people. DN: How long have you been a performing artist? TM: I’ve been a performing artist since I was able to get into a venue. I’m 30, now. So, it’s been a good 12 years .. I’ve been promoting for 11 years. DN: What made you decide to be serious about music? TM: I started taking music seriously as a teenager. My uncle and family kinda raised me to be into the music scene. My dad used to have me write 20 words out the dictionary, 20 times each and put them in sentences to show that I understood what the word means. That went on from about 1st grade to 5th grade. At age 15, I wrote my first flow and the rest is histo- ry. Now, I like to put on boom bap beats and have people throw me words to rap about to hone my freestyle skills. DN: Who has had the most influence on your music career and why? TM: Honestly, coming from Colorado, I’ve had so much influ- ence from a plethora of artists from all sides of the game. I’ve idolized all the lyricists like Eminem, Big Pun, Biggie, 2Pac, Mos Def, Andre 3000, Black thought, Wu-Tang Clan, and so many more. I was in love with the whole westside connection movement, as well as the screwed up click movement with DJ screws people like zro and Trae. Swishahouse movement with artists like Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, etc. I think I’ve pulled influence from everywhere and I wouldn’t have it any other way .. from the old-school 80’s era with the Guru, Grand Master Flash, Kurtis Blow, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim to the Motown oldies and R&B.

TM: Marketing, marketing, marketing, and networking with the right people that have the same dream and goals as yourself. Nowadays the industry isn’t going to try and give you anytime of day, unless you’ve taken yourself to places without them and have a solid marketing strategy as well as quality music ready to be released and published through either ASCAP or BMI. With that being said you want to be a well rounded artist from the jump and don’t worry about getting a record deal go for a publishing deal those are a lot more beneficial. DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? TM: I think the biggest failure I’ve had in this music game was trusting the wrong people to back me up, like I would back them up. It’s the reason why I became a promoter and artist .. I rather create opportunities that I wish I would’ve had when I was naive to the game and what it takes to make things happen. Ask anyone around me, I make sure everyone doubles up on their investments when it comes to shows and I promote the hell out of my events, because I understand it takes a commu- nity to make things happen. DN: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? TM: The best thing you can do is always work on perfecting your craft and take time to network, but stay humble and cau- tious. There’s a lot of snakes in the industry that will be there when your getting recognition and will leave u by yourself when your down and out .. don’t get discouraged if your people don’t believe in you, it starts when you believe in yourself. Is Tubi Taking Over? By Kisha Green

Have I grabbed your attention? Well, there is some truth to the title because, for many independent writers and filmmakers, Tubi provides a platform for many to turn their dreams into feature film realities. In the last four years, Tubi entered the scene and quietly built a catalog of black independent films, and this was needed, especially if you were a viewer tired of the typical Netflix and chill. In contrast, Tubi showed movies with people of color from all over, and some were natural, and others needed to take a few acting classes, but they had a story to tell. Tubi gave them a platform when others treated the film industry like a gated community where only the elite was allowed entrance. Tubi showcases diverse talent combined with the programming of 40,000 films and television series from over 250 providers, including Fox and its affiliates, with over 65 million monthly active users. Tubi has become the home to a lot of actors and actresses that have become fan favorites, such as Jamal Woolard, Mena Monroe, Murda Pain, Kaamal Hasaun, Crystal the Doll, Shelby Leigh, Demaris Harvey, and Markeiva Albritten. These once unknowns have become very familiar, and viewers will agree if Tubi movies are not starring those mentioned, it must not be a good movie. Enter the plot twist as the beautiful and talented Mena Monroe steps from in front of the camera to behind the camera and writes and directs her film If I Can't. The film becomes the most popular movie on the Tubi (men and women lie, but numbers don't) but also brings actor Tristan Fazekas to becoming the most hated man on Tubi for his role as Scott. Popularity for an indie film was significant, especially for a female in a male-dominated industry. If this is just the beginning, the future looks very bright for Monroe and others like her who wanted to get their films in front of an audience; thanks to Tubi, she got 65 million. Salute! I watch a lot of Tubi; personally speaking, my film dreams became a reality as I have two films currently streaming on Tubi, Coke Queen and The Last Bet, so I, too, am proof that hard work and resilience pay off, but that wasn't my first time working on a film as I worked a co-editor, and proofer for Tabari Sturdivant's LOVE KARMA currently streaming on digital platforms. Not only is Tubi supporting the indie film scene but is a massive supporter of series too, as independent filmmaker Silk White has found success with his Black Excellence series as well as his latest blockbuster, All I Want Is You starring Claudia Jordan, Crystal the Doll along with another Tubi fan-favorite, Lemastor Spratling that tells of a woman who is willing to risk it all when another woman tries to take her man. Fans raved all over social media as they eagerly awaited the sequel. And, of course, once a person enjoys your film, it piques their curiosity to check out other movies by the filmmaker. White is not a one-trick pony as before cinema; he was a best-selling author from NYC who transitioned from books to film with his series The Transporter, and It's Lonely At the Top along with New York Times Best Selling Authors, Nikki Turner's, On Da Run, Tressa "Azarel" Smallwood of MegaMind Media with the release of All In and The Available Wife, and Jaquavis Coleman's; Everything Is Both to name a few. There's no doubt the creativity and quick production makes Tubi a force to be reckoned with currently. Originally people heard Tubi and thought its low budget, but as of late, that has changed as the quality of films and series has improved. The Dirty D series has a huge following, and Chris Stokes and Marques Houston are leaving their film footprints with the success of The Assistant, Best Friend, No Way Out, and The Stepmother franchise while finding the perfect place for reality star turn-actress Erica Mena, who has mastered the art of playing crazy and psychotic. Tubi is legit with accompanying hashtags, memes, and Facebook Groups to support movies and dislike for some with complaints stemming from bad wigs, makeup, baby hair, and BBL's gone wrong, who should star in the next Tubi film and more, but one thing for sure is that they are watching, and that is all that matters.

Kay Soul is a recording artist, songwriter, and aspiring plus model based in Chicago. Kay began singing and writing songs in ele- mentary school and recorded her first solo song at the age of 19. Kay Soul is a 2020 W.A.M (We are the Music Makers) Winner for Best R&B album for “Hiding In Plain Sight” and nominee for the HerSong Blog artist of the year award for her May 2020 release, “Blood In My Veins”. David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Kay Soul: I was raised on the southside of Chicago by my grand- mother and grandfather. Music has always been an outlet for me. I started writing in elementary school and recorded my first song at 19. I am a compassionate person who believes that my calling in music is to heal the heart, soul, and mind. DN: How long have you been in the music industry? KS: I have been in and around the music industry for the past 14 years but decided to pursue it very seriously as my main career for the past 9 years. DN: What made you decide to be serious about music? KS: I have always had the desire to pursue a music career but it was not a dream that was supported by my family. However, after the death of a close friend I realized that life was too short for me to spend my days doing anything but what I love to do. DN: Which people or books have had the most influence on your music career and why? KS: In highschool I read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and it changed my life. encouraged me to find my voice and speak my truth. DN: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music in- dustry? KS: You have to have perseverance. There will be many naysayers and lots of rejection. You have to have tough skin and believe in yourself always. DN: Can you give us some examples of things you are doing or have done to expand your fanbase? KS: In addition to consistently releasing music and staying active on social media, I travel to various events and perform as often as possible. Additionally, keeping fresh content and visuals.

DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? KS: I don’t really look at anything as a failure anymore. There is always a lesson to be learned. I have fallen down plenty of times. I have been disappointed. However, each time I’m able to gain more insight that gives me tools that I need to get up and keep pushing forward. DN: What advice can you give other young men and women who want to follow in your footsteps? KS: You have to be willing to work hard and invest in your goals and dreams. Set short term and long term goals and be dili- gent about accomplishing them everyday. Seek to understand your purpose in life and let that guide you on your journey. DN: What does a typical day in your week look like? KS: I like to wake up and pray, meditate, and journal. I love a hot cup of coffee while I’m checking emails and making a todo list of tasks that must be completed. From there, I’m taking meetings, taking care of the needs of my family, and practicing my craft. I try to fill my days with things that will bring me closer to my goals. Anything else is just a distraction. DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the busi- ness? KS: I try to always keep my faith in God and the vision that he gave me for my music. I know that he would never bring me this far and leave me. I aim to look at every situation as a learning experience for a greater outcome.

DN: Tell us about your new single, Strong Connection. KS: Strong Connection is the first single off my forthcoming con- cept EP entitled Connections. It is a story of an unbreakable bond of love that stands the test of time. KS: I am currently working on a new concept EP entitled connections. I just finished the music video for Strong Connection and will be releasing that in the weeks to come. Actor & Executive Producer Interview By Robin Shockley

When Dreams become reality for Baltimore city man and Hollywood makes the connection. Based on a true life story about guns, drugs and gangster life, Hollywood signs a 20 year deal with actor, movie screenwriter, director and producer out of Baltimore Maryland. Mr. Larry Derr has a story that inspires and motivates in a way that catch- es people’s attention. Life hasn’t always been easy for Mr. Derr. When he was five years old he was shot in the leg with a 357 magnum. As a teenager he was hit by a fire truck while driving and lost his memory for a year with amnesia. Also, later in life he served time in prison. Yes, life was rough in the younger years for him. However, at the age of 39 Larry says that he encourages those with a passion to pursue dreams to stop partying and get focused on what’s important in life.

Larry started his acting career in theater and loved it. He played L “Onion” on the wire in season one and became friends with J.D. Williams and Tray Chaney on and off camera. When I asked Larry how his dreams of acting became a reality, he began to tell me about a dream he had that inspired him. In this dream that he had it was a continuation of a dream. He was passing the mountains of Hollywood driving a convertible car with someone in the car but he did not know who that person was. They were laughing and making jokes and then he woke up. He then thinks to himself, “man I wish I could finish this dream” and that is what happened. He went back to sleep and he began laughing and joking again with this person who was in the car with him and then he woke up again. He tells me he thought this dream felt so real that he wanted to go back to sleep to see if it could continue. Now this was his third time going back to sleep to see if the dream will continue and he said that this has never happened again after this moment. So as he went back to sleep he began to joke with the person again and then realized on the third continuation of the dream, as he spoke, “stop playing around with me man Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” Then he realized it was Will Smith. Laughingly, he said that excited him and that he had always wanted to be an actor and this dream led him to pursue the real dream of reality. Well Mr. Derr’s dream of becoming an actor exceeded writing and directing with producing the sold-out hit movie Guns and Grams. There are over 14 celebrity actors in this film. Including SAG Awards Nominee and American Black Film Festival winner Clifton Powell (Ray, Civil Brand) and winner of the Locarno In- ternational Film Festival and Young Artist Award winner Omar Gooding (Baby Boy, Wild & Crazy Kids). As well as star Joseph D’Onofrio (Good Fellas) round out the cast in GNG Productions debut feature film “Guns and Grams”. This film has sold out already in Decatur Georgia at the AMC theaters as well as Baltimore Maryland at Security Square Mall multiple times. Recently on April 2, 2021 a red carpet premiere was set and Felicia Pearson also known as “Snoop” (the wire) made a presentation with interviews and a few others such as Lamont Elliot, Irvan Speed and Tiffany Chambers. These last three mentioned, started their acting career because Mr. Derr saw potential and opened that door to give them a shot in this film. In recent interviews with “ Focus Forward with Robin on the Go”, these three people mentioned all explained to me how Larry recognizes those who wish to excel in their craft and are grateful for the opportunity to be featured in the movie “Guns and Grams”.


Next stop for the showing is Times Square NY on Friday May 14th 2021 with Larry Derr and the GNG Productions team. There will be various media outlets on site for the Red Carpet premiere. The film’s limited release has been picked up by AMC Theaters and has sold out multiple viewings in Baltimore and Atlanta and is expanding to other cities including Chicago Miami and Houston. Due to its ongoing success Derr’s Guns And Grams was awarded the movie wall of fame for 2020 in Baltimore for selling out the most shows along with Black Panther, Acrimony, and Avengers at the AMC theaters. Independent film distributor Adler & Associates Entertainment has acquired the rights in fielding and is now giving offers for worldwide sales on digital and VOD (Video On Demand). Derr has been reeled in for some BIG projects on the rise! He wrote this TRUE to Life story of guns, drugs and gang life that took place in his home town of Baltimore Maryland. It is a mix- ture of his very own personal life as well as the life of the Si- cilian mafia. “GUNS AND GRAMS” is based on actual events of an old stand- ing alliance between the Sicilian and African American Gang- sters; Forged with dirty money and backroom deals to outline the rules of the heroin trade in Baltimore. Not everyone enjoys seafood, but it has become one of my fa- vorite styles of food. While traveling through the small town of Burlington North Carolina one weekend, I saw a billboard of a restaurant called the “Red Crab’’. It is located at 3123 garden Road in Burlington. I had heard of this restaurant but have never visited as I’m very skeptical of chain food places. However, this turned out to be one of the best experienc- es and seafood tastings that I’ve had in a long time. Upon arrival the atmosphere had a boat and a huge shark in the middle of the place. It looked like a great area for picture poses. Since, this was my first time visiting the server was very informative of what choices were good to choose. To begin, I had the fried boom boom shrimp appetizer served with a sweet sauce and mini fried crab cakes. They were huge and crispy. The selection of food choices were interest- ing. They came in three steps. Step #1, you got your choice of crab, shrimp, snow crab legs, blue crab, mussels, (green or black) lobster tails, scallops, or clams. Step #2, you then choose your sauce; cajun, lemon pepper, garlic butter, juicy special or all of the above. And finally the last step #3, you were able to choose the spice level which includes; no spicy, mild, medium, hot or extra hot. There were other weekly spe- cials too. After having a difficult time choosing because photos looked so appealing, I chose the Red Crab special #2, with crab legs, potato sausage, and shrimp. Everything had a specific flavor that beats out any seafood boil that I’ve ever had. My mouth was watering with every bite. I definitely will be craving this chain restaurant on a regular basis. David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Britney Jane: My name is Britney Jane. I’m a singer/songwriter who is originally from Virginia and I embarked on my journey to Colorado in October of 2014 and I’ve been in Denver ever since. I started out as a background singer and I’m slowly working my way into stepping into my own lane as an R&B/Soul singer. DN: How long have you been writing music? BJ: I’ve been writing for a while now, I started writing professionally to build out my music career six years ago. DN: What made you decide to be serious about music? BJ: Music has been something that I have always loved. From the time that I was a child up until being an adult, I knew I wanted to be a singer. Of course throughout my life I had a lot of distrac- tions and I got to a place where the idea of ever pursuing music seemed like an idea that would never become my reality. It wasn’t until I got out of an extremely toxic relationship that I decided that I wanted to truly pursue what I had always loved and I was not going to allow anything to hold me back. At the time I had no di- rection as to how to even pursue my music or anything but I had to step out of my comfort zone and just network with local musicians. DN: Tell us about your latest single. BJ: My latest single ‘What if” is my favorite. I originally wrote the song playing my guitar and I felt like everyone could relate to it. We all have had that person in our life that we have wanted more with, but due to paths not connecting, it doesn’t work out, and you’re left wondering what if we had of been real with each other about how we truly felt or put in the time and made the sacrifices to have a relationship instead of playing these stupid games. DN: Which people or books have had the most influence on your music career and why? BJ: Should be an easy question to answer but I feel like I have mul- tiple influences. Down to my parents and the music they raised me on to watching Whitney Houston on TV performing. Also, I would say my manager Mawule has had an influence on me as well. He knows so much about the music industry and it inspires me to learn more and soak up his knowledge.

DN: Can you give us some examples of things you are doing or have done to expand your fanbase? BJ: I mean nowadays social media is really where it’s at. It has been such an adjustment for me but I understand the importance of posting. People want to know who you are, what you’re about, and what you do. So for me, I have to post on a regular basis. I share more things about myself aside from just my music. And I did have to jump on the TikTok train and I try to show more of who I am on there as well.

DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? BJ: I would say one of my biggest failures has been living my life according to how others want it. For a long time I felt like I could never make my own decisions. I would have an idea or interest in something that I would want to do, but I would never do it because of the negative mindset that I had, and I let opinions of others block my blessings. I believe the biggest thing I learned is that I have my own life, and I can only live for myself. Not everyone will be supportive of what I do, but DN: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music industry? me being supportive of myself can get me to where I need to be mentally. BJ: I would say remembering that though you’re an artist, you HE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 48 need.


DN: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? BJ: I would say to take the advice but then put something in mo- tion. Too many times we get advice and that’s all that it is. We do nothing with it! So that idea of wanting to sing, act, build a business, or etc just sits in your head while time passes by. Also, that negative thought in your head or those people who aren’t sup- portive don’t even matter. If you want to pursue something that makes you happy, DO IT! DN: What does a typical day in your week look like? BJ: Well right now I do still work a 9-5 so that takes up most of my day. However, after work I put time to work on music. So if it’s working on a beat, writing to a new song, or recording material to post for the week, I spend that time daily to do that. DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? BJ: Honestly, my mom and family. I lost my dad when I was 19 year old and I never got to take care of him or give back to him for all of the sacrifices he made. Thankfully, I still have my beautiful mother and an amazing Stepdad and I don’t want to get to a place where it’s a repeat of not being able to give to them. So when those times come I remember first I’m doing this because I truly love it, but also because I have an amazing support system that I need to provide for.
