Teresa B. Howell: Tell us a little bit about the group?

MAKO Girls: We are the MAKO Girls a trio sister girl group base in Atlanta that makes urban pop and R&B music. Collectively we all have a passion to entertain and can sing, dance, and rap.

TBH: How long has the group been in the music industry?

MG: We have been in the music industry for 7 years. Throughout that time we’ve created our own platform, performed at over 300 shows, and have been recognized by major people in the industry.

TBH: How did the group become serious about music?

MG: The inspiration to take music seriously came for the boy band Mindless Behavior. After viewing their documentary we were moved to pursue music as a career.

TBH: Is it now considered a career? MG: Yes, we consider this as a career.

TBH: What made you decide to pursue music?

MG: We’ve always had a love to entertain . It started with us making dances for parties and in our living room. To now performing on stages in front of large audiences.

TBH: Who has the most influence on the group’s music career and why?

MG: TLC had a huge impact on us and are one our main inspirations. We admire their longevity and message in their music.

TBH: Were there any mistakes you’ve learned from in the industry?

MG: We’ve learned to wear appropriate wardrobe for performing, we’ve experience a lot of wardrobe malfunctions on stage and now we know to wear dance wear attire for performances. As well as not showing it on your face if you messed up, because no one knows your moves except you.

TBH: What advice can you give new artists who want to follow in the group’s footsteps?

MG: Make sure that all of the group members are in it for the same goal. They had to be open minded and willing to put in the work. And distribute the work accordingly to work strongly together. And overall have fun!

TBH: In your opinion, what are the benefits of being an indie artist group?

MG: With being an indie artist you have all creative control, the ability to build your own team around you, and you’re learning all of the necessary skills as an artist to be able to explain it when someone works with you.

TBH: What does a typical day in the studio look like for the group?

MG: Before our recording session we work with our vocal coach on the songs. In the studio, Mimi mainly takes the role as a vocal coach or help with vocal production. Ani is the one to get into the booth and record her parts fairly quickly. While Kena sets the vibe in the studio, keeping the energy going when we’re doing our parts.

TBH: Who helped produce the songs and lyrics?

MG: We write our songs as well as collaborating with other songwriters and producers.

TBH: Have you started performing?

MG: We are slowly working our way back in live in-person shows. Though we are out performing our focus is to remain safe.

TBH: Who would be considered the group’s mentor?

MG: Some of our mentors are our vocal coach Mr. James Slaughter and our engineer JT. They have guided us with our performances, career, and have taught us to stick to who we are as artist.

TBH: How can someone reach you if they wanted to reach out for a performance?

MG: You can email bookings@makogirls.com to inquire for us to perform.

TBH: Any new music coming out?

MG: We are in the works of releasing our upcoming single “Aint Thinkin Bout You” and an EP that will follow up after towards the end of this year!

TBH: What is one of your favorite songs on your album?

MG: On our upcoming EP one of our favorites tracks is “Mood”. It’s very different compare to most of our tracks. And gives off a chill cadence with the beat, exudes tons of attitude and lets us brag a bit on how we celebrate our wins.
