David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? How long have you been a performing artist?

Babah Fly: I started performing in high school at house parties! Almost 30 years.

DN: What made you decide to be serious about music?

BF: Music has and alway be apart of my life, I’m from a family of musicians. There’s many generations of my family that have been playing music going back forever, it’s in our blood. I see it as a release and an empowerment tool. I noticed that since I picked up an instrument and wrote my first lyrics.

DN: Which people or books have had the most influence on your music career and why?

BF: Lee Scratch Perry for his mysticism and innovation. All the books by Hazrat Inayat Khan because he broke down the science of vibrations way back in the 1900’s. All my mentors and collaborators on music. My crew, my family!

DN: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music industry?

BF: The number 1 key to success in the music industry is to measure your success on your own happiness not on the opinions of others.

DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it?

BF: I can’t think of a big failure because when I get knocked down I get back up!

DN: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps?

BF: “Well it’s kinda simple just remain your own or you’ll be crazy sad and alone” -Q-Tip

DN: What does a typical day in your week look like?

BF: Wake up, check my phone for messages from the aliens. Meditate, Tai Chi, Yoga, physical conditioning stuff, eat, teach a music class, practice music/write music, Read, find some friends to hang with.

DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business?

BF: When I make a dope song or I smash a performance.

DN: What’s next for you? New music?

BF: I’m releasing an LP called “Gold Light Ruminations”. Doing some shows all through the country and hopefully outside the country.
