For The Love of Great Tasting Coffee to Smooth Java Beans

Dalia feels that enjoying good coffee is more than taste; it’s an experience. It is an experience that Smooth Java Beans prides itself in giving to each customer with each bag of quality roasted coffee beans.

Angela Anderson: What inspired the birth of Smooth Java Beans?

Dalia Florea Williams: The short version; is simply for the love of great-tasting coffee. I got married in the summer of 2020 and had not relocated to New York just yet. I was standing in my kitchen talking with my husband over the phone. He mentioned that the founders of a different coffee brand, one of which is an award-winning roaster, were looking for someone who might be interested in dabbing in his or her own special blends. At the time, I was in the process of retiring from my federal job. I thought this might be something that I would like to do as I am a coffee enthusiast and would love to start my own business. I said, “Babe, I would love to do this.” Once I relocated to New York in the fall of 2020, my husband set up a meeting with one of the partners of the other coffee brand so that ideas could be discussed.

AA: What is the mission of Smooth Java Beans?

DFW: Our mission is to satisfy coffee lovers with the best-tasting quality beans in every bag.

AA: What’s the story behind the name Smooth Java Beans? Was it the first choice for the name of your coffee business?

DFW: Actually, Smooth Java Beans was not the first choice for the business’s name. The day that I moved from Alexandria, Virginia, back to New York, we were in the car headed to New York, and I figured since it was a long drive, why not throw out some names. I threw out several names, but there was one name that my husband and I both liked and thought would bea good name for the company. Bean Bag Coffee was the chosen name, hahaha. In fact, I told the partner of the other coffee brand that Bean Bag Coffee would be the company’s name. However, once I did the research, I found out that the name had been taken. We had to come up with another name. Upon thinking about the flavor and blends for the coffee, “smooth” popped up. Also, my husband is a professional saxophonist who plays jazz, the name Smooth Java Beans made perfect sense.

AA: What aspect of the business do you enjoy?

DFW: Being a small business owner, I wear many hats in the business. The most enjoyable is packing the boxes to be shipped. Once my customers receive their coffee, I know they will enjoy the fresh smell and flavorful taste.

AA: What can customers expect from the Smooth Java Beans brand?

DFW: Customers can expect loyalty, high-quality coffee, friendliness, and great customer service.

AA: What makes Smooth Java Beans unique?

DFW: Smooth Java Beans is not a drop-shipping coffee company where the people who are selling the coffee are not aware of where the beans are coming from or what their customers are receiving. We use quality beans that have been carefully selected and perfectly roasted in small batches to ensure fresh coffee is delivered directly to our customers. Our beans are not over-roasted or burnt to hide the imperfections of low-quality beans.

AA: For the coffee lovers out there, how would you describe the Smooth Java Beans taste?

DFW: I would like to say that our coffee tastes smooth, bold, and flavorful, as it has been described by many of our customers. We have four different blends; light roast, medium roast, dark roast, and a medium roast decaf for those who love coffee but cannot have the caffeine.

AA: March is National Women’s History Month. When you reflect on the history of women in business, and those who paved the way for doors to be opened, what comes to mind as a woman and business owner setting your own trailblazing moments for others to follow?

DFW: That’s a great question. I hope that seeing my business flourish will encourage other women to embrace their dreams and have the courage to pursue them.

AA: What advice would you share with small business owners who are just getting started?

DFW: I would say to have a clear and firm mission by trying to determine the reason to start a business, have faith in yourself, and embrace failure. I would also add to be sure to understand your target customers and existing market and not be discouraged when there are small setbacks.

AA: What’s next for Smooth Java Beans?

DFW: We hope to get into retail stores and maybe brew up a specialty coffee for the Fall season.
