HEREFORDS TO 3,900 GUINEAS AT DUNGANNON Hereford bulls sold in spectacular fashion at the first Elite Breeders Sale in Dungannon Mart on Monday. The sale topping bid of 3,900 guineas for “Graceland 1 Inca” from Robin Irvine was closely followed by 3,800 guineas paid for “Corraback Glimmer” from Mervyn Richmond. The Graceland team were back in the frame with 3,700 guineas paid for “Graceland 1 Incredible” and 3,600 guineas for “Graceland 1 Intrepid”. The average price for the 13 bulls sold was just under £3,000 demonstrating the current strength of demand for Herefords.” The trade for females was also very firm as new breeders competed to secure some of the best bloodlines from the leading herds. An entry of young heifers from the Graceland Herd sold particularly well with 2,700 guineas paid on three occasions and an average of 2,600 guineas returned for five. These carried the service of Sire of the Year "Greenyards 1 Dougie” and “Fisher 1 Jubilee” and were scanned to calve in September. REMINDERS REGARDING TRANSFERS Please note that all bulls sold must have their transfers recorded with the Society, imperative if we are to be able to assist with the promotion of our Breed in respect of the Branded Beef Schemes that the Society is involved with. It also provides the Society with a comprehensive data base to utilize in future promotion of the Breed. --------------------------------In the event of a request being received from a buyer to transfer an animal into their name, so long as the request is accompanied by the Society’s Official Pedigree Warranty Certificate the transfer will be processed. Any breeder selling stock that they do not wish transferred should ensure that the buyer is made aware at the point of sale and the Pedigree Warranty Certificate forwarded to the office for cancellation. --------------------------------All animals sold at Official Sales will automatically be transferred and the Transfer Fee of £15.00 + VAT deducted at the time of the Sale.

GUIDE TO JUDGES ON JUDGING PROCEDURE A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CATTLE JUDGING Firstly, refer to the Schedule and check the Classification of each Class. Walk the ring and decide where best to view the animals and to stand them. Check with your Steward that the animals enter the ring in age order (oldest first, etc.). View the profile of the animals from a distance as they parade around the ring, checking their motion and size (compare against an object in the background) about two laps of the ring. Stand in a corner of the ring and watch the animals coming towards you, preferably uphill, then away on the level, looking for fore and hind legs in line and that foot placement is correct i.e. the rear hoof should land in the mark left by the front one. Movement should be smooth and free flowing. Ask your Steward to stand the cattle in a line, ideally face up the slope if there is one and with the sun (if sunny) on your back. Then walk along behind checking and comparing, likewise along the front. Then proceed to handle the animals from front to back checking on condition and muscling and any reproduction issues, i.e. udder development in females and testicles on bulls. By this time you should have a pretty good idea of your placings, then ask the competitors to walk around the ring again and pull individual animals into the line in the order you want them. When you have completed the line-up, just check that you are happy with your placings before handing out the prize-cards and remember when doing so to thank the competitors for coming and make positive comments about their cattle. If making comments on the microphone, remember to thank the organisers for asking you to judge. Points to look for: Balance, correct structure, muscling, locomotion, well grown and good size for age, waste free (type the market is looking for), coat find and smooth (“hard coat, hard feeder), colour and markings to conform to Breed type. DO:

Dress suitably for the occasion, i.e. suit or jacket and always a tie.

DONT:

Enter into long dialogue with the competitors in the ring. Wear wellington boots unless absolutely necessary. Forget to thank your Steward.

ROYAL CORNWALL SHOW 5th to 7th JUNE, 2014 Due to lack of support for the above Show we are at risk of losing our Hereford Classes and being amalgamated with “Any Other Pure Breed”. The Show Society have agreed that for this year the Hereford Classes will continue, subject to the following provisos:●

If over 12 entries are received, and from at least 3 different exhibitors, the Hereford Classes will continue for the 2014 Royal Cornwall Show.

If 12 or less entries are received for 2014, the Classes will be cancelled and the opportunity given for those exhibitors who have entered to transfer to the “AOPB” section.

If 10 or more entries are forward at the 2014 Show, the Hereford Classes will continue again for 2015 (but still with the above stipulations).

If less than 10 entries are forward at the 2014 Show, the Hereford section will not be staged in 2015 but exhibitors will, of course have the opportunity to exhibit within the “AOPB” Classes.

We hope therefore that members will support the Show and ensure that the entries are sufficient to guarantee the retention of our Classes.

SAINSBURYS TO INTRODUCE BRANDED HEREFORD BEEF INTO 137 STORES Whilst in the process of producing this Newsletter, we have received confirmation that the Supermarket Chain, Sainsburys, is to introduce Hereford Sired Beef onto their ‘Fresh Meat Counters’ in 137 stores – processed and supplied by Dunbia. This new market will provide yet another boost to the number of Hereford Sired Cattle required to fulfil the increasing demand for Branded “Hereford Beef”.

How to beef it up with Hereford Beef! The recently launched website by The Hereford Cattle Society promotes one of the Nations best known food products, Hereford beef! If you’re not sure which cut to purchase or how to cook it, the new website at www.herefordbeef.org.uk has plenty of advice and exciting beef recipes to provide consumers with inspiration. Reared naturally on the green pastures of the British countryside, Hereford beef cattle, one of the oldest native breeds and prized internationally are allowed to grow and mature slowly on a diet of grass and forage, all of which contribute to the production of nutritious world class quality beef.

Guide to buying and cooking Hereford beef Beef should be a deep dark red. The red is achieved through the sides of the beef being hung. This is a traditional process that improves tenderness and creates the healthy colour. You should only buy hung meat if it’s not a good looking rich red colour then don’t buy it. Marbling is an excellent sign of great beef. The layers of fat run through the lean muscle which melts during cooking, providing a natural baste that ensures the beef tastes great! Correctly matured beef will look dry and will have a sticky feel to the surface. This is a great sign, never buy beef that appears to be flabby!

Make a meal of local Hereford beef This unique website offers a selection of tempting recipes from Cured Hereford Beef Fillet with Bay infused Potatoes to Hereford Oxtail with Herb Dumplings.......

Where to purchase Hereford Beef There is a full list of outlets stocking Hereford Beef from across the UK including major retailers such as Waitrose & the Co-operative to Farm Shops and Boxed Hereford Beef.
