Welcome, Welcome everybody to The Haven in celebration of the Lewis family breeding Hereford cattle for 200 years. We must thank our predecessors in starting and continuing this great association with the “white-faced breed”. We are only baton holders for the present, but the family’s enthusiasm and drive to improve our cattle and the breed still burns bright. We think the cattle brought forward for the sale which include the whole “V” registration rear heifers are a good reflection of what we are breeding in today’s environment and what we think the industry needs. We have always strived to take our herds forward which has meant investing in new genetics wherever we get the chance, whether from this country or overseas, and we think this is reflected in the offering. Nothing gives us more pleasure than seeing cattle we have sold do well for our customers and we have full confidence that this sale group will continue to do this. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us to get us where we are now on our Hereford journey. Thank you for joining us to celebrate our Bicentenary and we wish you every success with your own Herefords in the future.

The Lewis Family

An Appreciation of The Lewis Family and their Cattle Breeding Over the past 200 years there are many who have contributed to the world’s beef cattle raising industry, but throughout that time there is one north Herefordshire family that has always done that bit more, and through thick and thin, each generation has left its mark. Back in 1822 this farming family started, along with other like-minded operators, to keep records of their cattle breeding activities. By the 1850s, two brothers, based near Weobley, got involved with submitting entries into the newfangled Hereford Herd Book. James Lewis, centred at Yarsop, near Yazor was leading the way in these early volumes over his brother, Thomas, who was at Newchurch, Kinnersley. James’ business was positively growing and by 1863, he and his family had moved on to the well-appointed farm, Milton near Pembridge. Sadly, within four years both James and his wife had been taken ill and died leaving six orphaned children. By 1871, Thomas and his family moved to The Woodhouse, Shobdon using the spacious residence to additionally take-in his nephews and nieces, together with some of his late brother’s cattle.

Thomas Lewis Of all the children at The Woodhouse, it was James Jnr who took a particular interest in his Uncle Thomas’ breed lines. By the early 1880s, Thomas’ eldest son, Thomas J Lewis, had emigrated to Brookmount, Odebolt, Iowa, USA to set-up his own Hereford cattle operation. He and many fellow Americans made it their business to take-in breeding stock from the homeland of the breed. Thomas J Lewis imported many young bulls from his father’s herd. During the mid 1880s, James Jnr accompanied a boatload of Herefords to America. It was a rough, eventful voyage but a great experience for the young Herefordian. Of all the exports to America, arguably the most influential, was the young cow, Dowager 6th. She was sold, with her heifer calf at foot by Thomas Lewis in 1881 to Gudgell and Simpson and they travelled over the Atlantic with the bull calf Anxiety 4th, bred by Thomas Carwardine of Stocktonbury near Leominster. In the following years when these two famed white-faced animals were mated together they produced a succession of offspring that would change the course of beef cattle farming forever. Full siblings, Don Carlos, Don Quixote and their sister Donna, dam of Beau Donald, would breed on to appear in pedigrees many, many times and have a big influence wherever used. Prince Domino the most prepotent Hereford of all time had within six generations of his pedigree both Anxiety 4th and Dowager 6th. They each appear seven times. 4

James Lewis

Thomas Lewis retired from farming in 1888. Also in this year, James Jnr married Margaret, daughter of George Bray, and they set-up farming at The Haven, Dilwyn. James was advised by his Uncle Tom of which cattle were the best to buy at his dispersal and from them the foundations of the family’s future successes were developed. The Woodhouse Catalogue By 1917, James had bred the Champion bull at the Hereford Society’s spring sale. He made the top price of 320gns on that occasion, (and was sold to Capt R T Hinckes of Mansel Court when the average was less than 62gns) but later in life was sold for export to Leibigs of South America at 2,000gns. Turgot - Champion Bull 1917

In 1928 the farming at The Haven, the cattle, the apples and the hops, was taken on by son Edward Lewis. He developed the Hereford herd using such bulls as Free Town Bodyguard and a run of Tarrington bulls closely bred to the great Tarrington Broadside. This resulted in a high quality herd of females and by the time that son and daughter Leslie and Sybil joined the family partnership, Shucknall Favourite was acquired.

Edward Lewis Snr Favourite was a most powerful bull. Getting his youngsters into the world was sometimes difficult but Edward Lewis and legendary herdsman Jack Smith persevered to the point that the following generations were game-changers. Favourite left some outstanding bulls and exceptional breeding cows. His offspring took the Haven herd to the top of the pile. The subsequent progeny were much sought after. Shucknall Favourite As with all livestock breeding outfits, the continued rates of success are dependant to the availability of followup sires. It was by good fortune that the calf, Vron Gaffer, was found to continue the herd development. Winning the Royal Championship and Bull of the Year in 1956, his bloodlines meshed so well with the genetics of Favourite so much so that the Haven herd became one of the greatest names in cattle farming. It was Favourite’s progeny that was responsible for The Haven being the first herd to take the Herd of the Year Award in 1956, coinciding with the occasion of Edward Lewis being President of the Hereford Cattle Society. The Haven herd again won this accolade in 1964. In those days the calculation was made through the prizes awarded at the society’s sales held at Hereford. The family won the award again in 1965, but this time with the Havenfield herd. This entity of the Lewis family was set-up in 1958 when a number of chosen senior breeding cows were selected to create the new herd, calving in the spring of that year with most of the calves sired by Vron Gaffer. Not only did this herd rise quickly to high esteem at the Hereford sales but produced some outstanding show and breeding animals. Havenfield Eclipse and Regina 2nd were respectively awarded the male and female championships at the 1964 English Royal before becoming sought after and successful breeders.

Havenfield Eclipse

The Lewis family’s showring achievements would be difficult to match. At the Royal Highland Show in 1963, three of the Hereford breed’s entry of four for the Beef Interbreed Team for The Farming News Trophy came from The Haven and in 1976, the only other occasion that the white-faced breed has been successful in this competition, again three of the team of four carried close Lewis bloodlines. Over a period of less than 20 years from the mid 1950s to the mid 70s, the family’s stock took five Burke Trophy wins at the English Royal, six Bull of the Year Awards and eight Female of the Year Awards.

A significant proportion of the annual sales turnover from around these times came from the export of breeding stock to all parts of the world. In fact, it is certain that the Lewis family have exported more animals than any other outfit in pedigree beef cattle breeding, bar none. To date 24 countries have been clients.

Annual Sales hosted at Boycefield 1970-1976

Back in the early 1950s, an aspiring young breeder, my father Ray Davies, developed a plan. Briefly this was to select a son of Shucknall Favourite to be followed by a son of a daughter of Favourite. The third bull was to be a continuation of these proven bloodlines. When creditable stock came on-board and were made available for sale, the outcomes were of interest. One such example was when the young breeder offered a heifer at the Hereford sales, she was snapped up for export to Canada. She was a daughter of the second Haven bull and in-calf to the third. This resulted in the birth of a bull calf that was registered with ‘Haven’ in his name and subsequently the names of animals in following generations maintained the connection. It was certainly an affordable way of acquiring these noted bloodlines even if not from the original home. It just shows how saleable the Haven name was. 6

From these times, and particularly through the work of Leslie Lewis who clearly had one of the greatest mindsets in livestock breeding, the family have been involved with many projects and initiatives. Annual on-farm sales, postal sales, many breed record prices, semen collection and marketing, dairy calf production schemes and commercial evaluation through the use of such animals and breeding cross-bred replacement breeders from the Hereford cow: all of these projects and more being devised to keep both the Hereford breed and the Lewis family at the forefront of beef cattle activity. The 1980s into the 90s brought greater challenges to keep the Hereford breed moving onwards. Leslie Lewis sought sire options from around the world and was highly responsible for bringing to the UK the breeding of such well-known names as, Silver Standard 55C, BB Domino 1087, BP Andy Commander 4S, BP 55C Britisher 1M and SNS Generator 28X among others. They may not of always succeeded in the family’s operations but undoubtedly many other UK breeders have much benefited from the judgement and determination of the Lewis’. The family have also been highly active in supporting the breed at home. Over many, many decades the Lewis’ have been proactive at many a sale, buying in breeding females, not only to add female families to their herd mix but also with a view to take something of an out-cross that could favour them with a home-bred future herd sire from their tried and tested lines. In 2002, Edward Jnr and brother James and their respective families set the future into motion with some highly responsible management decisions of creating two businesses. The famed cattle herd was amicably split into two herds to be maintained at The Haven and Boycefield Farm under these respective prefixes. Over the past 20 years or so, alongside the other farming operations both herds have moved positively along, often sourcing breeding lines from Australia and Ireland. This has ensured that the genetics on offer today are just as relevant, just as successful, just as much in demand as ever they have been.

Edward, Lesile & James Lewis Throughout this later period it is also noteworthy that coinciding with the celebration of the family’s work, another milestone of 50 years of guidance from herdsman, Mike Chandler exists. It can be no accident that for the equivalent of over half of the Lewis family’s Hereford cattle breeding period two highly respected senior herdsmen, Jack and Mike have been involved to also leave their mark. Additionally and importantly, in Ben and Billy, the family have two operators of immense ability to lead the work onwards and upwards. The past has been incredible, the future exciting.

DNA screening in respect of all entries for pedigree breeding and export The Hereford Cattle Society has adopted a policy of DNA testing all sale entries. Entries are DNA profiled, resulting in a sire verification (SV) or parentage verification (PV). All are tested free of the genetic defect hypotrichosis (hair disorder). Should any further information be required please contact the society’s office.

The required tests must be conducted as soon as practicable following the sale: • Animals sold to go to Northern Ireland must have remained on a single holding of origin for a period of 40 days and must be subjected to a second TB test prior to shipment. • The cost of testing, return transit and all other reasonable expenses must be borne by the purchaser. During the period of testing the animal will remain at the purchaser’s risk. If, however, any animal should fail its test, the sale will become null and void. • Payment for animals sold under these conditions must be made by the purchaser to the auctioneers on the day of sale. The auctioneers will hold such payments until notice has been received from the vendor that the animal has passed its final test and is in transit. • All entries from exhibitors are offering their animals subject to the above and are all eligible for re-test.

Haven Lamborghini Sire: Haven Cavalier Dam: Haven Splendour 25th One of the most impressive horned sires that The Haven has produced. He Leaves progeny with tremendous thickness and capacity. The daughters retained in the herd are in the top end of the cows. Notable stock sired include Haven Rover, Ricki, Rolls Royce, Silvester, Pit Stop, Lady Lynda 2nd, Louisa 77th and of course Snowdon.

Solpoll 1 Lawman Sire: Panmure 1 Henry Dam: Solpoll 1 Pansy F15 Lawman is everything we look for in a Hereford. He is one of the best poll sires available leaving consistent progeny with squareness of topline, solid structure and eye appeal, while in the top 1% in the breed for terminal and self replacing indices. Notable stock sired include Havenfield 1 Rufus, Trident, Villian, Sky High 1 Louboutin Lucy, Appel Kaboom and many more.

Shiloh-Farm Elite Sire: Steil Gerard Dam: Shiloh-Farm Adorable Lady We first saw Elite when he was in isolation at Pulham Herefords and were impressed with his hip width, structure and his weight gain. He has produced some fantastic stock for Pulham Herefords as well as those heifers you see on display today. His first hefier has calved down at Pulham with lots of milk.

Haven Thrush 74th (X) ET Date of Birth: 05/09/2020

Tag: UK301650 101118

Haven Thrush 74th is our crown jewel in this Platinum Year sale. She is a strong, powerful correct heifer and a descendant of Teresa 2nd who was foundation cow of the herd. Teresa 2nd can be traced back 22 generations to 1850 under the Lewis ownership. Breeding like this has overtime helped give us the continuity, consistency and longevity over the last 200 years. The Thrush family have produced many outstanding cattle, particularly through the bulls they have bred. Haven Thrush 64th is no exception a tremendous servant to our herd producing Haven Kermit - National Hereford Show Champion 2014 stock bull for Pulham and Twilight herds. Another son Haven Silvester is now residing stock bull at Creuddyn herd. We reserve the right to flush this heifer for embryos, with the option to split results between purchaser and us. To be done at purchasers convenience, feel free to discuss with us. (AI’d to Mawarra Influential Q162 female sexed semen 21/04/2022, since running with Dieulacresse Tic Tac.)

Leslie Lewis

We would like to pay tribute to our father Leslie Lewis who put The Haven and Hereford cattle in the spotlight during the golden years of the 1950s and 60s. When the continental challenge came, he found other ways to bring the Herefords to the fore. Some of the best days to remember were the on-farm sales of 1976 -1981 where 100 head sold annually. On the morning of the sales he would also organise a show of the 50 Haven bulls, with judges invited from all around the world to officiate from places like Uruguay, Zambia and Scandinavia. After one of these shows he was heard to say “This judge did a marvellous job I totally agree with all his placings!”. In his late teens Leslie/Dad unfortunately contracted polio and spent over 18 months in hospital recovering. He said he was one of the lucky ones, as many didn’t survive. It left him not being able to do any practical work but this was more than compensated by his brain going into overdrive with ideas and determination. We were lucky to benefit from his wealth of knowledge about cattle and he gave us the enthusiasm for the breed then and now going forward. Dad would have been delighted with Ben and Billy having such an interest in the cattle and embraced the new technologies and today’s ways of communicating. He would also have been in his element with the Bicentenary Sale. In 1995 we lost Dad to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and thought it would be fitting to combine the Bicentenary with raising some funds to help a cause which is close to our hearts. We are therefore donating 50% of all proceeds for lots 22 and 28 to My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Edward & James Lewis

Dam: Boycefield Purport 6th at 15 years old! 57

My Name’5 Doddie Doddie Weir OBE is one of rugby’s most recognisable personalities. He earned 61 caps for Scotland during a successful playing career, represented the British and Irish Lions on their successful tour to South Africa in 1997, and won championships with his two club sides, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons. A talented, committed and athletic lock forward, Doddie is now facing his biggest challenge. In June 2017 the Scot revealed he was suffering from Motor Neuron Disease. From the outset, Doddie has been driven to help find a cure for this devastating and, as yet, incurable disease. Driven by his frustration at the lack of progress in the treatment of MND and the absence of options for those given this awful diagnosis, Doddie and his Trustees established the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, launched at Murrayfield ahead of the Scotland v New Zealand match in November 2017. We have a clear vision: A World Free of MND. To date, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation has committed over £6.5 million to research and over £1.5 million to support families living with MND.

A real gem. Ruby is all we are trying to breed in a heifer and without doubt is a flushing prospect. She oozes presence and power along with balance and feminity. Her dark coat and pigmented eyes make her stand out from the crowd - a true head turner. We will miss her, make sure you do not. Dendor 1 Ruby 20th was purchased from DE, ED & AL Jones in 2015, in that year she was Champion at Kington Show. She is dam of Havenfield 1 Robin Hood who was Male Champion National Calf Show 2018 and stock bull for Cleland Herd.
