OFFICIAL SALE DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS It is a fact that we spend a considerable amount of time chasing Exhibitors for various documents relating to the Society’s Official Sales. You are therefore reminded that, in addition to your Sale Entry, you MUST include:1. The “Herd Health Declaration”. 2.
Pedigree Certificates.
3.
The DNA results of the three Genetic Defect tests for all animals.
4.
At least one week before the Sale we require the “Sale Animal Health Declaration” detailing BVD vaccination information and TB testing date. It may be worth noting that at a recent meeting of Breed Societies, one reported that entries for their Sales were refused if not accompanied by the “Herd Health Declaration” and another fining their members a sum of £200.00, the proceeds being placed in a fund for young members.
SALE INSPECTIONS AT HEREFORD LIVESTOCK MARKET You are asked to note that, following the Veterinary & Independent Inspector’s inspection of Sale Entries, any that are rejected should be removed or returned home from the Sale premises by no later than 8.00 a.m. on the morning of the Sale. If it is not practical to do so, they will be marked appropriately and repenned in an area designated where signs will be displayed identifying the animals as rejected by the Veterinarian and Inspector and that they are not to be offered for sale.
EBVs NOW AVAILABLE TO JUDGES AT THE SOCIETY’S MAIN SALES In future Judges will be provided with the “Breedplan” results of all recorded cattle entered in the Show Classes. The decision as to whether these results are used will be left to the Judge appointed.
APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Many of you will have seen the adverts appearing in the main farming magazines advertising the position of a CEO of the Society in view of the imminent retirement of the current Breed Secretary, David Prothero. Applications for the position have now been received by the Agricultural Recruitment Company appointed and interviews by the selected Committee are currently taking place. The Council will in the near future be in a position to announce the details of the CEO appointed.
HARPER ADAMS UNIVERSITY HEREFORD GRAZING TRIALS We can now report that all 35 Hereford sired calves sponsored by the Society have arrived at Harper Adams University for the commencement of the Grazing Trials as reported in the last Newsletter. As and when any information becomes available, details will be included in future publications.
DATES FOR REMAINING COUNCIL MEETINGS 2017 Thursday, 4th May Tuesday, 19th September Tuesday, 21st November
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Tuesday, 21st November
THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCURACY OF EBVs AND THE REGULAR SUBMISSION OF DATA Discussed recently at a Council Meeting, it was agreed that there was a serious need to address the subject of the “Accuracy of EBVs” and the best way of doing so is to ensure that all data is recorded on a regular basis, i.e. Birth Weights
-
Calving Codes
200 Day Weights
-
400 Day Weights
600 Day Weights and, if the Herd is of a sufficient size, to create effective Contemporary Comparison Groups Scanning
-----------------------------------------------ABRI, when asked what the effect would be to the accuracy of an animal’s EBV if Raw Data such as Birth Weights and Calving Codes were recorded for the animal, have responded that:“If the animal’s measurement can be compared in an ‘effective’ group, the accuracy will be increased. As a guide, it is suggested the Calving Ease (CE) accuracy would increase by 4% to 6% whereas Birth Weight (BW) accuracy would increase by 10% to 15% if the animal is measured for the relevant trait”. This therefore highlights the importance of regularly submitting Performance Data at every opportunity, thereby increasing the accuracy of the EBVs reported.
SEMEN EXPORTS Would Members please note that most Countries to which semen is exported insist that the donor bull must have been DNA parentage verified not just sire verified. Therefore, should you have semen in storage that is eligible for export, please ensure that the dam of the donor bull has been DNA profiled.
DNA TESTING POLICY FOR ALL OFFICIAL SHOWS & SALES All animals, both Male & Female (with exception of calves sold at foot), submitted for entry in an Official Society Sale must be DNA tested and results lodged with the Society at the time of close of entries. The test to include:● Animal Profile ● Sire Verification ● The defects – Hypotrichosis, Dilutor and Idiopathic Epilepsy (If both parents of the subject animal are tested free of defects it will only be necessary to DNA for Parentage Verification.) Any animal found to be a carrier of a defect will not be accepted for entry. So as to ensure that the results are known by the close of entries, hair samples should be submitted by the 1st of the month preceding the month in which the entries close:Eg: The Autumn Show & Sale – 10th October, 2017 Entries Close: 25th August Hair samples must be submitted by 1st July
A REMINDER OF THE DNA TESTING TIMETABLE *
Samples lodged with the Society by the 1st of a month should generate a result by the end of the month.
*
Samples lodged with the Society after the 1st of a month should generate a result by the end of the next month.
Please note that both of the above statements depend upon the hair samples submitted being of the required quality to achieve a result: i.e. Samples must be: ●plucked so as to provide a reasonable quantity of hair follicles. ●clean – we are finding an increasing number of occasions where samples are not and replacements have to be requested.
DNA TESTING A reminder to Members of the costs relating to DNA testing:£
● Standard Profile including Sire Verification and Three Defects (5% discount if 20 or more animals are tested at the same time).
36.00
● Standard Profile including Sire Verification and possibly Parentage Verification (10% discount if 10 or more animals are tested at the same time). This test will be sufficient in respect of animals whose parents have tested free of defects thereby achieving (PVF) status.
22.50
● Standard Profile (including Sire Verification), Three Defects and Polled test.
50.00
● Polled test in isolation
18.00
● Additional Sire/Dam testing.
3.50
● To upload overseas DNA results in respect of imported genetics (a charge per sample).
3.00
ALL FEES SUBJECT TO VAT
In the event of repeat hair samples being required for a re-test due to no result, the above fees will apply again.
CARE TO BE TAKEN WHEN COLLECTING SAMPLES Your attention is drawn to the fact that we have had more than one incident occurring where animals have been excluded and on re-testing it has been found that the original hair samples submitted were labelled incorrectly. This not only results in extra clerical work at the office but also creates a considerable amount of stress for the individual concerned and additional charges due to the necessity to re-test the animals involved. Members are therefore urged to take great care when placing their hair samples in the pouches provided, ensuring that the correct hair samples are placed in the correct pouches.
Beef Expo 2017: The Key Beef Industry Event is Back! NBA Beef Expo is a true celebration of the strength of the great British Beef Industry and is the UK’s key annual event held on behalf of the industry. It brings together the very best British pedigree and commercial cattle. Hosted by the National Beef Association (NBA), the 2017 event will take place at the NAEC Stoneleigh, Warwickshire on Thursday 18th May. The 2017 NBA Beef Expo provides British breeders and producers with an excellent platform to showcase the quality of their cattle, and visitors can expect to see some of the finest examples of British breeding from all corners of the UK. As the event will be the first of its kind post Brexit, there will undoubtedly be a focus on what this means for British farmers in terms of opportunities moving forward. A major feature of the event is the National Commercial Cattle Show (NCCS) which will see, as always, farmers from the length and breadth of the UK showing the very best cattle from their herds, all hoping for a share of the £5000 overall prize fund. Alongside the NCCS, visitors have the opportunity to browse in the region of 120 commercial and educational trade exhibits, as well as specialist Breed Society stands. NBA Beef Expo is a nucleus for knowledge sharing and networking. Trade exhibitors will highlight, through displays and demonstrations, the latest industry trends and developments as well as nutrition and genetics. Applications are now open for businesses, traders and breed societies wishing to attend the 2017 event. Now a firmly established feature of the event is the Future Beef Farmer Challenge which was launched back in 2015 for beef farmers aged 36 and under. Entrants can take part as an individual or as a team and the winner of each section is presented with a trophy. The competition challenges entrants’ knowledge of the beef sector at both a practical and scientific level, which is fundamental to the future strength and success of the industry. As in previous years, the highly anticipated farm tours will take place on Wednesday 17th May giving people the opportunity to gain an insight into how various beef enterprises are managed. This year the farm tour includes three diverse beef farms all championing efficiency in their relative sectors and showcasing the very best of British beef production. As part of the event the NBA will also be hosting a range of seminars and workshops held by various industry professionals. Chris Mallon, Chief Executive of the NBA commented: “Plans for NBA Beef Expo 2017 are certainly in full swing and we are very much looking forward to welcoming farmers and exhibitors to the event in May. Following the UK’s Brexit decision this year, this will be a key focus as we offer support and help British producers who may have concerns surrounding this. Trade stand applications, visitor tickets and cattle show entry forms are now available online at www.beefexpo.co.uk, where further detailed information about the event can also be found.
CO-OP MEET WITH THE COUNCIL At the last Council Meeting Mr. Will Jackson, Agriculture Manager Beef & Lamb, gave an extremely upbeat and enthusiastic presentation on the current situation regarding the Co-op’s marketing of the “Truly Irresistible Range of Hereford Beef”. He praised the quality and consistency of the product, giving great confidence to the future association between the Coop and Hereford Producers.
Just Noted
The March issue of the Co-op Store Magazine is currently promoting Truly Irresistible Hereford Beef for Mother’s Day.
Give it a try!
RANDOM CALF INSPECTIONS We wish to point out to members that a number of incidences have arisen where the inspection weights submitted of the calves selected have led to the suspension of the registration of the calf due to an unacceptable Daily Liveweight Gain. However, on follow-up inspections it has been found that the cause is due to the inaccuracy of the scales used. We therefore urge members, when called upon to accommodate a Random Calf Inspection to take extreme care and ensure that the scales used are checked before weighing the calf. Should any further such incidences arise, the Council may have to consider introducing a charge for second inspections to cover the expenses incurred.
ONLINE REGISTRATIONS There has been a great increase in the number of Registrations now being submitted “Online”. Members will find instructions within this Newsletter on using the “Online” programme and those who adopt this method will make a saving of £2.20 per calf registered.
THE HEREFORD CONTINUES ITS ASCENDANCY At the recent Council Meeting we presented the annual report on the progress of the Breed and here are some of the figures reported upon:●
Membership of the Breed has grown by very nearly 50% over the last 10 years – 980 in 2006/07 to 1,449 in 2015/16.
●
Active Herds during the same period by 62% - 570 in 2007 to 922 in 2016.
●
Calves processed during the same period by 53% - 5,623 in 2007 to 8,589 in 2016.
●
The number of animals transferred for breeding during the same period by 56% - 1,421 in 2006/07 to 2,211 in 2015/16.
●
The number of Hereford Sired Calves processed by BCMS (UK mainland) and APHIS (N. Ireland) over the last 8 years has increased by 84% - 94,686 in 2009 to 174,136 in 2016.
It is probably this last set of figures that we were most pleased to be able to present. A totally independent assessment of the rising popularity of the Breed made by commercial producers throughout this Country showing their confidence in the Hereford Sire being used to produce the calves processed by BCMS and APHIS. This endorsement of the Breed by commercial producers makes it all the more important that we take great care in selecting only the best if we are to maintain and improve upon this demand. Perhaps another reminder of the importance of utilising the Society’s Performance Programme as a tool to be used not only for Breed Improvement but also marketing providing our commercial customers with the best information available to aid them in their selection of bulls for use in their herds.
POLLING STATUS The following is an extract of an article Science, Facts & Reminders - By Catherine Brown, Associate Editor, Canadian Hereford Digest The following questions are answered by Dr. Sheila Schmutz, with additional commentary and deductions by the author, with Schmutz’s guidance. Dr. Schmutz is considered a leader in the field of animal genetics. She is a Professor in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Saskatchewan and is a researcher of international acclaim. Areas of interest and specialty include genetics of horns and scurs in cattle. If cattle are scurred, does that mean they are horned? “No.” Can a polled animal be scurred? “Yes. That’s why some cattle people prefer to say “smooth polled” [in the absence of scurs,] to be clear that the animal is polled, without scurs.” What is a Heterozygous polled animal? “The term “heterozygous” means that the animal carries only one copy of one allele and one copy of the opposite allele. A heterozygous polled animal would therefore be labelled (P/p).” The animal may or may not have scurs. but only heterozygous polled cattle ever grow scurs. Two scurred alleles are required in females and only one in males, making this a sex-influenced trait. A heterozygous polled animal is polled but still carries the horned allele and can therefore pass horns along to progeny What is a Homozygous polled bull? The term “homozygous” means that the animal carries two copies of one allele (i.e. polled), ensuring that genetically, that animal is absolutely polled. If an animal is known to be homozygous polled (P/P), it will not have scurs. A homozygous polled animal can only influence its progeny to be polled. Some ranchers use the term “double polled” to mean that an animal is descendent from two polled parents but this does not ensure the progeny will be homozygous polled, or even polled at all. HORNS According to an early study of fetal anatomy in Germany, horns seem to begin growth at four months gestation but in many breeds, horn buds are very tiny at birth. If left unremoved, horns continue to grow in size throughout the life of the animal.
POLLED Polled is an autosomal dominant trait in cattle. Autosomal genes are genes present on any chromosome other than the sex chromosome. And because it is dominant, it only requires that one parent has passed it on, in order for it to be expressed in progeny. The gene causing the absence of horns is at the top of cattle chromosome 1. Scientists use the term “epistatic”. Epistasis is the suppression of one gene by the effect of another gene. The homozygous polled genotype (P/P) is completely epistatic to the gene for scurs in both sexes. SCURS The gene for scurs is located on a completely different chromosome (chromosome 19), than the gene for polled. Scurs typically do not appear until about four months of age and stop growing at a few inches, if left on. “If dehorning occurs too early, scurs can be missed,” says Schmutz. Some scurs, often called “scab scurs” are never much bigger than a thumbnail. Horn growth makes it impossible for scurs to develop at the same spot but horned animals can carry the gene for scurs. Traditionally, the scurred trait has been reported as sex-influenced. Male cattle need only one allele for scurs to exhibit the trait, whereas females need two alleles. All female cattle that have scurs are considered to be homozygous scurred (Sc/Sc). But males can either be homozygous scurred (Sc/Sc) or heterozygous scurred (Sc/sc), if they have scurs. DEFINITIIONS: Polled The name for the absence of horns in cattle. Scurs Small horn-like growths on the frontal bone in the same locations where horns would grow. Scurs are referred to as “wiggle horns” in German and indeed, most are movable and are not attached firmly to the skull. Allele One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome. Examples for the polled gene and scurred gene: P = polled allele p = horned allele Sc = scurred allele sc = allele for no scurs Poll Breeders wishing to test the polledness of their bulls can do so when submitting samples for DNA profiling. The total cost of securing this Genotyping Report is an additional £16.80, bringing the total cost to £60.00 (Inc. VAT).

Once you have entered “ONLINE” you will be requested to create your own “Password” for future access. You will find a number of facilities available to you as a Member of the Society which are all fully explained. Once logged onto the file you will have the ability to submit Calf Notifications/Registrations online and the basic instructions to do so are:● Click on the link that says ‘online transactions’. ● Then click on ‘create a new batch’. ● Then select the appropriate batch type (Calf Registration/Notification). At this stage Recording Members can also choose an option to submit their Performance data. ● When the batch has been created you will need to click on the ‘add button’ to record/register each animal that is included in the batch. ● Once created additional animals and information can be added/changed until such time that you submit the batch to the Society. The batch will remain in a holding file until you submit it. ● Please remember that, having created a batch, it must be submitted to the Society within 27 days of the oldest calf on the file otherwise late fees will automatically be imposed. ● The information available to you includes the Sire and Dam of each calf, details of which can be accessed by either – (A) Selecting the animal from a drop down list, OR (B) Manually entering the Identity Number (Tag No.) of the animal. EMAILS FROM ‘DOWN UNDER’ Many of you will have received emails from a Mr. P.H. Hall in Australia, all of which have been considered by your Council. Having carefully analysed the information contained within these emails, your Council is satisfied that it, and previous Councils, have done all that could be reasonably expected of the governing body to maintain the authenticity of the “Herd Book of Hereford Cattle” and thus the purity of the Breed. It is also the Council’s belief that since the decision taken in 1999 to implement a strict DNA policy, this action has resulted in the Society being able to do more than ever in its history to strengthen its main objective of “Maintaining and Protecting the Purity of the Breed” for the future. As far as the Council is concerned the subject is now closed but assure members that such matters will always be under review in the event of new technology becoming available that they consider will strengthen further their resolve to abide by the Society’s main objectives. Should any member wish to obtain any clarification on the subject, they should contact the Secretary.
