CORRECTION TO ARTICLE HEADING IN THE RECENTLY PUBLISHED BREED JOURNAL Mr. Fred Hawke, on behalf of the Hawke Family – Hustyn, Breock & Nanscient Herefords – has asked that we point out that, contrary to the heading of their article in the Journal, they are breeding modern Herefords using the latest genetics available and not Herefords containing no imported bloodlines which he feels is inferred by the heading used. In the context of this article, the use of the description “traditional” was to denote that Herefords are a traditional British Native Breed. We have also been asked by Mr. Hawke to include the following notice:-

HERD VISIT F.J., F.G. & R.P. Hawke SATURDAY, 30th JULY, 2016 2.00 p.m. to view the Hustyn, Breock & Nanscient Hereford Herds at Hustyn Farm, Burlawn, Wadebridge, Cornwall, PL27 7LD All Members Welcome Please contact the Hawke Family if you are able to attend Tel: 01208 815834

PAYING YOUR ACCOUNTS BY BACS (BANK AUTOMATED CLEARING SYSTEM) Just a reminder that a number of Members have chosen to pay their accounts by “BACS”. “BACS” is ideal for making regular automated payments, helping reduce costs of administration and improve financial control. As the process is electronic, it removes the need to write cheques which can be costly and is often subject to human error. Payments can be made much later in a business day – up to 9 p.m. and are cleared within two business days to any Bank Account. Should you wish to pay your accounts using this method, you will need to approach your Bank who will require the following details:Society Bank: Account Name: Sort Code: Account Number:

-

National Westminster The Hereford Cattle Society 53 50 41 05613019

It would assist us that, when setting up your payments by this method, you request that your Bank use your Society Membership Number as a means of identification in addition to your name. You should also ensure that we are informed that you will be paying your accounts by “BACS” and that you advise us on each occasion a payment is being transmitted. This can simply be an email at the time your payment is made.

Details relating to “BACS” now appear on all Invoices being sent out from Hereford House

MAKE USE OF THE “ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM” Members are encouraged to make use of the “ONLINE REGISTRATION” facility available on the Society’s Website under the heading “MEMBERS ONLY”. To access this facility for the first time you will need to contact the office to obtain an ‘access code’. Once you have entered “ONLINE” you will be requested to create your own “Password” for future access. You will find a number of facilities available to you as a Member of the Society which are all fully explained. Once logged onto the file you will have the ability to submit Calf Notifications/Registrations online and the basic instructions to do so are:● Click on the link that says ‘online transactions’. ● Then click on ‘create a new batch’. ● Then select the appropriate batch type (Calf Registration/Notification). At this stage Recording Members can also choose an option to submit their Performance data. ● When the batch has been created you will need to click on the ‘add button’ to record/register each animal that is included in the batch. ● Once created additional animals and information can be added/changed until such time that you submit the batch to the Society. The batch will remain in a holding file until you submit it. ● Please remember that, having created a batch, it must be submitted to the Society within 27 days of the oldest calf on the file otherwise late fees will automatically be imposed. ● The information available to you includes the Sire and Dam of each calf, details of which can be accessed by either – (A) Selecting the animal from a drop down list, OR (B) Manually entering the Identity Number (Tag No.) of the animal. The drop down list of Sires will include all those you have used in the last two years. The list of Dams will consist of active cows currently in your ownership, together with breeding age heifers.

REMEMBER TO CLICK “SUBMIT” WHEN ENTERING REGISTRATIONS ON-LINE Members using the on-line facility to register their calves are asked to note that they must click “SUBMIT” before signing off. If this is not done the data does not come through to the Society for processing, therefore running the risk of late fees being imposed.

CHANGE TO BULL SALE WARRANTY Your Council have agreed that, with effect from this coming Autumn, the Warranty period for bulls sold at Official Sales will increase from 3 months to 6 months. This decision made in light of the Herd Health requirement of placing bulls in quarantine before entering a new herd. For Members’ information, the Society Sale Rules for both Bulls and Females is shown below:Any Members requiring copies of a “Private Bull Sale Contract Form” may download them from the Society’s Website or apply to the Society Office.

BULL WARRANTY (a)

All Bulls 12 months old and over on the day of the sale shall be sold as being fertile and capable of natural service as at the date of sale.

(b)

No claim in respect of infertility:

(c)

(i)

Shall be made during the first month after the date of sale or after the expiration of six months from the same date.

(ii)

Shall be valid where a Veterinary Surgeon, nominated or appointed as in Regulation (c) (i) below, certifies in writing that infertility is due to illness contracted, or injury suffered, after the fall of the hammer on the day of sale.

(iii)

Of bulls purchased for export shall be valid unless such claim shall have been admitted or proved correct prior to the shipment by sea or air, or before the expiration of the time allowed by clause (c) hereof whichever shall be the earlier date.

If, during the second and sixth months after the date of sale, or as provided in clause (b) (i), notice in writing of the bull's infertility be given by the Purchaser to the Society, then, subject to the provisions of clause (b) of this regulation, to establish a claim for infertility the following provisions shall have effect, namely:Upon receipt of such notice:

(d)

(i)

If, and only if, both the Vendor and the Purchaser so agree in writing, the bull shall be examined either by an independent Veterinary Surgeon to be agreed upon by both the Vendor and the Purchaser or in default of agreement to be appointed by the Society, and the decision of such Veterinary Surgeon as to fertility or otherwise shall be final and binding on both parties, such decision to be given within three months of the receipt of the notice under clause (c), such decision to contain a certificate as to whether or not, in the case of infertility, such infertility is due to illness contracted or injury suffered after the fall of the hammer; or

(ii)

The Vendor may take the bull back and shall have three months from the receipt of such notice in which to prove whether or not the bull is fertile for and capable of natural service, such proof to be the decision (which shall be binding on the parties) of an independent Veterinary Surgeon agreed upon or appointed as in sub-para (i) hereof.

In this Regulation the words "fertility" and "infertility" shall mean "fertile and capable of natural service" and "infertile or not capable of natural service" respectively. All references to "months" shall mean "calendar months".

(e)

The expenses of proving fertility or otherwise shall fall as follows:(i)

In the event of the Vendor exercising his right of having the bull returned to him under clause (c) (ii) hereof, the cost of carriage shall be paid by the Vendor in any event.

(ii)

All other expenses of carriage and independent Veterinary Surgeon shall follow the decision of fertility or otherwise.

(iii)

There shall be no claim by either party for maintenance of a bull.

(f)

In no case shall the Vendor be liable, under this regulation, for a sum exceeding the amount for which the Bull was sold (and any expenses awarded under the preceding paragraph) less its realisable value at the time of the decision of the Veterinary Surgeon. The Purchaser shall not unduly reduce the bull's condition without the Vendor's consent.

(g)

Notwithstanding the provisions of the clause (c) of this regulation, the Vendor shall, upon receipt of a notice of claim of infertility, have the option, to be exercised within fourteen days of receipt of such notice, of taking the bull back and refunding the full purchase price to the purchaser.

(h)

Any examination by a Veterinary Surgeon under this regulation shall be conducted at the place where the bull is kept at the time of the Veterinary Surgeon's appointment whether this be by agreement of the parties or by the Society.

(i)

A copy of all notices and decisions under this regulation shall be forwarded to the Secretary through whom also all payments other than expenses under clause (e) shall be made. Failure to comply with this regulation may mean that the claim cannot be substantiated.

FEMALE WARRANTY The Vendor shall pay to the Purchaser compensation at the following rates except that in cases (a) and (b) where a female is sold with her calf at foot as one lot, the value of the calf shall be 30% of the total sale price, thereby determining the value of the adult female on which a claim can be made as 70% of the sale price of that lot. In the case of:(a)

Females sold as being served which shall come into service within two months of Sale, and which are last served not less than ten weeks prior to the Sale:(i)

In the case of females realising 600 guineas or over, an allowance of 25 per cent of the cost of the animal.

(ii)

In the case of females realising 1,000 guineas or over, the Vendor shall allow the Purchaser an additional 15 per cent on the amount exceeding 1,000 guineas.

Notice of any claim under (a) must be made by the Purchaser to the Vendor or his agents in writing, immediately the animal shows signs of being in service. (b)

In the case of females sold as being in calf and subsequently proving to be not in calf for reasons of abnormality of the genital system, the following conditions and procedures shall apply. Notice shall be given in writing by the Purchaser to the Vendor, immediately the animal shows signs of being in service, or failing this, within 10 calendar months of the date of service or of the last date when running with the bull where a warranty of pregnancy is given. Upon receipt of such notice:

(i)

If, and only if, both the Vendor and the Purchaser so agree in writing, the animal shall be examined by an independent Veterinary Surgeon, to be agreed upon by both the Vendor and the Purchaser, or in default of agreement, to be appointed by the Society, and the decision of such Veterinary Surgeon shall be final and binding on both parties.

(ii)

In his certificate the independent Veterinary Surgeon must state that the animal is barren and has not been in calf to the stated service, giving details of the abnormality.

Where a claim is established under this clause the Vendor shall pay to the Purchaser compensation at the following rates: (iii)

In the case of females realising 600 guineas or over, an allowance of 25 per cent of the cost of the animal:

(iv)

In the case of females realising 1,000 guineas or over, the Vendor shall allow the Purchaser an additional 15 per cent on the amount exceeding 1,000 guineas.

The expenses of such independent Veterinary Surgeon's examination shall be borne by any Vendor paying compensation under this Clause but otherwise by the Purchaser. (c)

In the case of any females sold as being unserved and afterwards proving to be in calf, then an allowance of 25 per cent of cost shall be made by the Vendor and in the case of females realising 600 guineas or over the Vendor shall allow the Purchaser an additional 15 per cent on the amount exceeding 600 guineas. Claims under Rule (c) to be made within six calendar months of date of sale.

(d)

No compensation will be paid if carelessness or ill-treatment on the part of the Purchaser can be proved by the Vendor.

(e)

The term "running with the bull" implies no warranty of pregnancy unless specifically stated in writing at the time of Sale. When a warranty is given then the above Rule (a) (i) and (ii) and (b) (iii) and (iv) will apply irrespective of service date.

(f)

Any Vendor required to pay compensation under this Rule shall have the option of taking back the animal concerned and in this event shall refund the full purchase price.

(g)

In the event of the Vendor exercising the right of having a female returned to him under this Rule the cost of carriage shall be paid by him in any event. In the event of the independent Veterinary Surgeon deciding in favour of the Purchaser, thus making it necessary for the animal to be slaughtered, cost of carriage shall be paid by the Vendor.

(h)

If it is found that a female gives calf to a different bull from that stated, then compensation will be payable at the following rate: (i)

Claims under this rule must be received within one month of the birth of the calf. N.B. Any female (cow or heifer) that has been flushed for embryo transplant will be EXCLUDED from the terms of any warranty, but individual vendors of such animals shall have the option of giving their personal warranty to be announced at the time of sale.

BREEDPLAN RECORDING A plea to those Members who are currently not performance recording – “PLEASE DO SO”. Since the adoption of the ABRI Breedplan Performance Recording Programme just over 10 years ago, no additional charge for this service has been levied against breeders. The basic requirements are:●

Birth Weights and Calving Codes (submitted at the time of registering the calf).

200 Day Weight (carried out at weaning).

400 Day Weight.

Additional information that may be recorded includes:●

Cow Weights (recorded at the same time as 200 Day Weights of calves).

Scanning.

Scrotal Measurements.

The greater the amount of data recorded, the greater the accuracy of the results. Incentives available relating to Performance Recording include £5.00 paid to Members for every animal scanned each year. A Superior Carcase Sire payment to users of such sires of £5.00 per calf up to a maximum of 100 calves. We really do need greater support for the Performance Programme than is currently the case. In analysing the data currently being processed, only 20% of the Breed’s annual calf crop is being “Weight Recorded” and 15% being “Scanned for Carcase Traits”. Please ring us now and apply for a “Breedplan Recording Pack” and start submitting your herd data for analysis. The information required can either be submitted on forms provided or online via the Society’s Website.

ABRI TIPS ON RECORDING BIRTH WEIGHTS Birth Weight EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in calf birth weight. Birth Weight EBVs are expressed in kilograms (kgs) and are calculated from the weights of calves taken at birth. 1 .Why should Birth Weights be recorded? Calving difficulty has an obvious negative impact on the profitability of a herd through increased calf and heifer mortality, slower re-breeding performance and considerable additional labour and veterinary expense. Many large studies have shown that the level of calving difficulty in a herd is influenced by many environmental factors and several genetic factors. These genetic factors include such things as calf weight, calf shape, pelvic size and calving “will. Of these, calf weight is by far the most important factor. 2. How do I record Birth Weights? Many different methods are currently used to record calf birth weight. These range from using bathroom scales through to the use of commercially available calf weighing cradles that can be attached to the tray of a utility or the front of a four wheel motorbike. A few examples of birth weighing devices are provided below.

3. What considerations should be made when recording Birth Weights?  Birth weight should be recorded for the whole calf crop. Without comparisons to the other calves, "occasional" measurements are of no value and can actually be misleading. Recording birth weight for dead calves is particularly important.  There are significant fluctuations in the weight of a calf over its first week of life. Therefore, it is important to weigh calves as close to birth as possible. Ideally, measure birth weight within 24 hours of birth.  Do not guess birth weight or use girth/chest size to estimate birth weight. Either weigh the calves or don't record birth weight.  A birth management group should be recorded if there are different treatments of the females prior to calving that may affect birth weight. For example, where one group of cows have had different feed availability. A separate birth management group should also be assigned if the weight of the calf has been affected by special circumstances (e.g. premature calves, the dam was sick etc.).  Some breeders have reportedly been injured by protective cows while weighing calves. It is important to take due care when collecting this information. 4. How do I submit Birth Weights? Details to be submitted at the time of the calf’s registration. ____________________________________

SEMEN EXPORTS Would Members please note that most Countries to which semen is exported are now insisting that the donor sire must have been DNA parentage verified not just sire verified. Therefore, should you have semen in storage that is eligible for export, please ensure that the dam of the donor sire has been DNA profiled.
