United States A second federal judge blocked most of President Donald Trump’s newly revised travel ban on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang of Maryland deemed the proposed ban unconstitutional on the ground that it is discriminatory towards Muslims. Chuang’s ruling came one day after a federal judge in Hawaii made a similar ruling on the updated ban and one day before the band was set to take effect. The updated ban would restricted travel to the United States for citizens of Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, North Korea, and Venezuela. Chaung’s injunction allows for some of the proposed restrictions to be placed upon those without “a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.”

President Trump has been accused of telling a fallen black soldier’s widow that her husband, “knew what he signed up for.” Army Sgt. La David Johnson was killed in an ambush by Islamic militants in Niger earlier this month, along with three other U.S. soldiers. According to Rep. Fredrica Wilson (D-FL), she was with Johnson’s wife on Tuesday when she received a phone call from Trump and overheard the comment. Johnson’s mother later confirmed Rep. Wilson’s claim, while Trump and the White House deny that the comment was made.

Asia A North Korean diplomat warned the U.N. General Assembly on Monday that, “a nuclear war may break out at any moment.” In recent weeks, the U.S. military and its regional allies have increased activities around the Korean peninsula, which has put Kim Jong Un and his regime on edge. Kim In Ryong, North Korea’s deputy ambassador to the U.N., said the county has nuclear weapons capable of reach the entire U.S. mainland and action will be taken if the U.S. attempts to, “invade our sacred territory.” Ryong says North Korea has no intention to use nuclear weaponry otherwise.

Africa At least 277 civilians are dead in Somalia’s capital after two car bombings on Saturday. In the deadliest incident in modern Somali history, an addition 300 people were injured and 40 of them had to be airlifted to Turkey for treatment. The first explosion destroyed a popular hotel, Qatar’s embassy, and multiple other buildings, causing one to collapse. The second blast happened minutes after authorities received a tip about a vehicle carrying explosives in the district noted for housing government buildings. No groups have claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Trump’s Never-ending Battle Against ‘Fake News’ By: Madison Rodwell, Global and Politics Reporter

News media was subject to yet another attack from President with the purpose of changing the national conversation. The most Trump’s personal Twitter account last week. On this occasion, his recent of these attempts was his condemnation of the NFL protests. anger was directed against NBC News. The president went as far as sending Vice President Mike Pence to an Indianapolis Colts game just to have him walk out when players On Oct. 10, NBC published a story claiming that in July, Secretary took a knee. Attacked at the time as “fake news”, the term was adopted by the Trump campaign and used against the mainstream media, who were beginning to increase their examination of then-candidate Trump. The adoption of the term can be attributed to Steven Bannon, Trump’s campaign manager and editor of the far-right website, Breitbart. He did not originally use the term “fake news”, instead calling mainstream media outlets the “lying press.” This term is a direct translation of the German word “Lugenpresse”, which was used by Joseph Goebbels and the Nazis during the 1930s and 40s. Donald Trump has always shown a disturbing tendency to resort to pseudo-authoritarianism when his demands are not being met. His Twitter attacks against NBC and their journalistic efforts will most likely come to nothing; however, it is a continuation of a disturbing trend. Nearly five decades ago, an American president pitted himself against the news establishment. The eventual outcome was Richard Nixon’s near-impeachment and resignation. Only time will tell if the Trump presidency has a similar end.

The president has always had a complicated relationship with the news media. As a private citizen, he often clashed with tabloid journalists and TV anchors, while also spending as much time as possible in front of the cameras. Allegations have also been made that Trump would call journalists using a false name and act as a publicist for himself. However, over the course of his presidential campaign and his first year in office, the mainstream news establishment has turned its laser focus on President Trump and his party. As the Republican legislative agenda has stalled in Congress, more and more stories have been written about the dysfunctional nature of the Trump administration. This media scrutiny, combined with a plummeting approval rating, has led to a myriad of stunts by President Trump and his associates

Homecoming at a Glance: What the Week Really Means By: Raaziq Brown, Contributing Reporter

As a legacy student of Howard University, I began my tenure at the Mecca in 2014 with grand expectations for Homecoming. Throughout the entirety of my youth, my mother, who graduated from Howard in 1991, boasted about the superiority of Howard’s Homecoming in comparison to all schools--HBCU’s and PWI’s alike. The excitement that I had for my first Homecoming was similar to how I felt about travelling abroad for the first time: I had no idea what to expect, but I knew that it would be fun. My expectations for my first Homecoming were heightened even more once I came to campus and was immediately apprised by upperclassmen of Howard’s epic 2012 Homecoming. With a starstudded Yardfest line-up featuring Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Pusha T, Big Sean, Meek Mill, T.I. and a surprise appearance by Drake, I was sold. Homecoming sounded like a festival on the same level as Coachella or Made in America, and I wanted in.

pride that would fool an outsider into believing that Howard is perfect. While the live performances of Yardfest are a valued addition to the entire Homecoming week, it is not, at all, what makes or breaks the Homecoming experience. To the annual visitor who is not a Bison, Homecoming is an experience that gives the attendee a taste of Howard in all social aspects. From the pink and green bomber jackets and fervently stomping gold boots to the impeccably beat faces and recently purchased outfits, a non-Howard attendee of Homecoming could confuse Howard with a superficial realm of Blackness where everything is shiny and everyone looks their best. This intrigue is what brings thousands of people to campus every year and will continue to do so. For active students at Howard, Homecoming is similar to Thanksgiving festivities being held at home every year. Students get to experience family members, old, new and reappearing, enjoying the halcyon that is Homecoming Week. For alumni, on the other hand, Homecoming is truly about coming home. Graduated Bison enter their old home with new accomplishments to boast about, children to flaunt and memories to resurface.

October rolled around and my excitement for Homecoming plateaued after news spread that Yardfest for 2014’s Homecoming would not feature any live performers for the first time in years due to the riot that was caused by Drake’s surprise performance two years prior. This news left me questioning the validity and future of Howard Homecoming and was the cause of backlash from students and alumni ultimately initiating an early separation The alumni presence on campus during Homecoming captures the between what was ‘Old Howard’ and what is ‘New Howard’? essence of the last stanza of the University’s alma mater, “When A year later, this disunion was reaffirmed with Homecoming from thee we’ve gone away/May we strive for thee each day/As we not reaching its potential because of poor weather and Yardfest’s sail life’s rugged sea/O Howard, we’ll sing of thee” in a propitious lack of live performances for the second year in a row. Although my personal Homecoming experiences have varied, the feeling that I felt being in the midst of Homecoming activities remained constant throughout all three Homecomings that I have attended. Howard Homecoming left me with an indescribable, exclusive essence that can only be understood if it is experienced.

All things considered, regardless of the lack of information that we have on who the guests and performers attending Homecoming are, it is important that we embrace and remember what Homecoming actually is. Howard Homecoming is a time for all–student, alumni, and visitors–to appreciate and enjoy Howard as, not only an This essence is a unifying factor of Homecoming and serves as the academic institution, but also as a salient force and influence in the means of connection between all attendees. WHO DO YOU BELIEVE IN? By: Malcolm Wyche

PAGE 13

@ByMalcolm

I’ve noticed our generation does not like to pledge our allegiance to anything. We stand in the middle of many issues. Our refusal to be labeled as turned into a culture of disassociation. It is now acceptable to stand for nothing. The result has led to an abandonment of taking action because we are not moved enough by what’s going on. The area I have seen this happen most significantly is in our religions. It seems to me, growing up I identified with Christians, Muslims, Atheists, etc. But, now, if I were to ask around I would receive ambiguous answers about the universe or higher power being in control.

won’t ask for it. We have morals but don’t live by them. Without faith, there is a lack of direction. During hard times, our lack of action doesn’t come from a lack of concern it stems from not knowing what to do. We don’t know if we want to pray, protest, or do both. We don’t have anybody to turn to because what we believe in can’t be communicated to.

Religion taught us how to live, and the underlying principles continue to reign supreme. Now, in a generation that can go to church and still not claim Christianity, we, also, see a culture that refuses to make decisions. It shows in our materialism, lack of political action, and definition of self. Our inability to make decisions has resulted in a generation that doesn’t know how to define themselves. We left ourselves to be identified by others.

“Who do you believe in? I put my faith in God Blessed and still breathin’ And even though it’s hard That’s who I believe in”

Older generations call us lazy and uninformed. I don’t agree, but it’s understandable. I would call us lazy, too, from the outside-looking-in. We have ideas, but no plans. We want help but

I admit it can be hard to proclaim our faith for specific religion. In hindsight, the realization that I haven’t called myself a Christian in years gave birth to this article. But, a culture that represents false idols before faith has to make you think.

Having belief in something goes a long way. It’s not about choosing the right religion or trying to persuade each other to join a particular side. But, everybody needs to have faith. Faith will allow us to come together in unprecedented ways. It seems to So, I pose the question of how did this happen? When did we be- me that religion is what separates us from our ancestors. Even come against professing our faith and being rooted in our beliefs? during their fights for equality and equity, their faith kept them I can’t help but see that this has created a slippery slope.
