Two Howard Students Named 2017 HBCU All-Stars By: Bria Horsley, News Editor @autobriagraphy By: Kai Sinclair, Asst. News Editor @kai_sinclair

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) announced its 2017 HBCU All-Stars at the Annual Summit hosted at the White House. Of the 62 All-Stars, Dontae Bell and Rogí Banks were two Howard University students selected to be ambassadors for the White House Initiative on HBCUs. Bell, a senior economics major from Seattle, sees this role as an opportunity to implement on-campus initiatives to begin to progress the black agenda. His priorities are to increase the visibility of HBCUs and change the stigma associated with the military. “You can be a pro-black, conscious person while also benefiting from the opportunities within the military,” the air force ROTC cadet said.

still importance in having conversation [with them],” Banks said. Banks credits her grandmother for teaching her that every learned habit can be unlearned, which drives her optimistic outlook on her relationship with the White House under its current administration. It also leaves her hopeful for the future of Title IX handlings at Howard University, which she intends to address through her on-campus initiatives. Bell is an advocate for working with the administration in order to make effective changes to HBCUs. “Some people have a problem with us working with the White House. I don’t see [working with the administration] that way,” Bell said. “I think this is an opportunity to do a lot for HBCUs. My theory, though, is that the university may not want to put the spotlight on this right now and show that we can still manage to get things done.”

As a member of the All-Star community, Bell is provided with the tools, mentorship and guidance to take steps towards his goals in alliance with the University’s administration. A Timeline of Trump v. Kim Jong-Un in 2017 By: Leah Simone S., Global News Reporter Early Tuesday morning, North Korea’s foreign minister threatened to shoot down U.S. jets from international airspace. Ri Yong-ho said the United States declared war last week as President Donald Trump and North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, exchanged volatile messages during the annual U.N. General Assembly. During his first U.N. address as president last week, Trump said, “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.” He referred to Kim Jong-Un as “rocket man” on a “suicide mission for himself and for his regime,” and tweeted that his country and regime, “won’t be around much longer.” Trump’s bold comments were improvised and not in the speech’s draft that senior aides had pre-approved, according to the LA Times. North Korean officials translated these inflammatory remarks as a declaration of war, according to Yong-ho. “The whole world should clearly remember it was the U.S. who first declared war on our country,” he said. Kim Jong-Un responded to Trump’s comments with a promise to, “tame the mentally deranged U.S. dotard with fire,” which sent internet users into a frenzy searching for the definition of “dotard.” Early this month, North Korean officials announced that they had successfully tested their most powerful nuclear bomb yet--a miniaturized hydrogen bomb capable of fitting on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). This test set the stage for the latest war of words between the top U.S. and North Korean leaders.

As the Jewish community celebrates, The Office of the Dean of the Chapel recognizes and congratulates the continued observance of such rich and fruitful traditions.

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year of the Jewish faith. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jews traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated by Jews as the birthday of the universe, the day G‑d created Adam and Eve, and is observed as the head of the Jewish year.

MY NAME IS MY NAME. By: Malcolm Wyche

@ByMalcolm

I grew up caring and figuring out ways to help people. So I decided to spend 2017 being me. All I did was read, write, and travel. I isolated myself, stripped myself of everything, discovered who I am, and God showed me who he is. I’ve always considered myself more spiritual than religious, and I don’t want to preach, but God is really the only reason I’m able to share this message, because he saved me. And I think that our generation is a spiritual generation. We understand there is a higher power and that it lives inside all of us. We’re the generation that believes we can change the world, but we’re also the generation that goes against everything we believe.

After the robbery, I had to confront myself about my actions and decisions. I had to deal with knowing that I would have died dissatisfied with my life. I had to grip the harsh reality, that while my life is in my hands, it can be taken out of my hands. Looking at my almost-murderer in the eyes, I saw myself. Looking back on my life, it’s incredible to see how much success I wanted for so little effort. We get I was a man who didn’t know himself and gave up caught up in the hip-hop lifestyle showing us how to his name for an imaginary one. I didn’t have a plan. turn up, get drunk and high, and still be successful. The path I marked for myself led nowhere. But in reality, it doesn’t work that way. My loss of direction had been misconstrued as passion when really I was lashing out. I wanted attention, something to call my own, and purpose. Instead of taking the time to figure it out and know myself, I chose to stay busy — not productive.

For me, I had to realize that if I want the success and to be able to have an impact, then I have to really work for it. I have to be able to sacrifice the fun for the grind. I have to let go of the urge for fame and focus on the work. I have to live by my principles.

After seeing myself at my lowest point, I had to It’s September 2017, a year and one month since think about why I survived. It seemed to me that I the incident, and I’m better than ever. I’ve found had only one option, to get right clarity, peace, purpose, patience, love and faith. I had to get back to doing me. I had to get back to being Malcolm. I grew up thirsty for education always reading and learning. I grew up in the church having a great relationship with God.

Writing this letter is really for me. It’s my way of releasing all my past emotions and fear. It’s my way of saying I’m here now and I’m ready to walk in my truth.

Howard University Hosts Early Screening of ‘Marshall’ By Rebecca Johnson, Campus Reporter

getting this type of media put up in front of us, especially Howard, got lucky for us to get and early screening. I’m an acting major and, for me, it was inspiring to see Chadwick, to see the directors get up there and tell how they made a movie.” Following the screening, there was a panel discussion about Thurgood Marshall’s legacy and the role of HBCUs in being at the forefront of social change moderated by the host of NewsOne Now, Roland Martin. On the panel was actor, Chadwick Boseman, film director, Reginald Hudlin and NAACP President, Derrick Johnson.

Open Road Pictures and BazanED sponsored an early screening of “Marshall” at Cramton Auditorium last Wednesday. The screening was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Thurgood Marshall being sworn into the United States Supreme Court as the first African-American Justice. The movie highlighted the Howard alumnus and his role in being the only lawyer for the NAACP.

Johnson explained that the NAACP is still doing the same work of defending cases in lesser-known towns, of course now with more than one lawyer. Currently, they are the only organization representing Kharon Davis, a man from Houston County, Alabama who spent 10 years in jail without a trial. Justin Hansford, a law professor at Georgetown University and civil rights activist, announced the opening of the Thurgood Marshall Center for Civil Rights at Howard University’s Law School. The Civil Rights Center will serve as a think-tank that will hold conferences on law and social issues such as education and criminal justice reform. The center will also house written works about social justice and law. The center will be an extension of the Civil Rights Clinic, which allows law students to prepare court cases for low-income clients. After he introduced the new Civil Rights Center, he shared one of Marshall’s favorite philosophies about practicing law, “A lawyer is either a social engineer or a parasite on society.”

Instead of telling Marshall’s story through a landmark case, such as Brown versus the Board of Education, the film chronicled a case where Marshall had to defend a man in Connecticut who was accused of raping a white woman. The film focused on a smaller case to portray the superhero quality that Marshall had. At the time, he was the sole lawyer for the NAACP and had to travel to small towns to defend wrongfully accused African-Americans. Students, like Demarko Hooper, were inspired seeing a notable Howard grad- All members on the panel agreed that the HBCU eduate playing another notable Howard graduate on- ucation he received at Howard gave Marshall the experience and critical skills that made him a civil rights screen. leader.
