Yes, love is in the air and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. I can’t believe that January 2011 has come and gone and that we’re immersed in a new year. If you’re like me, the last few months have been all about planning, budgets and my personal favorite - goal setting. I recently signed up for a program “Design Your Best Year Ever,” and it’s really been an eye opener for me. Many of the topics are not business-related…but personal. As men, we have no problem talking about business, but shy (or run) away when the talk turns to feelings and emotions. “Putting family first” has always been an interesting concept to balance for me. One that really struck home the other day was when my daughter, Tayla, asked me, “Dad, why do you work all the time, I never get to see you?” So I asked her, “Would you rather live in a smaller house and see me more, or live in a bigger house as I continue to work hard?” Her response surprised me, “Dad, I would live anywhere as long as I can see you more and we can do stuff together.” That conversation made me really examine the past year. My fondest memories were not work-related; but instead, they were personal experiences I shared with my family and friends. As adults, we often think we know what’s best for our family. Although, sometimes taking the time to talk to them (and really listening), reveals that what they want is totally different from what we thought. If you’re like me, you spend more time working than doing anything else…making the need for solid, personal relationships of paramount importance. So as you go about your day, stop to think about this. You work to support your family, but your family and friends also work to support you every single day with unconditional love. Shouldn’t your relationship goals be just as (or even more) important than your business goals? Without your family and friends, what does success in business really mean?

So as you review your goals and priorities; take it from me, put family first and spend quality time with the ones you love. Take time to have fun, smell the roses, leave sexy notes on the bathroom mirror and yes…have a little chocolate!
