WOW! What a ride!” It’s amazing what one can accomplish in just four short weeks. That’s how long it takes us to produce each issue of our magazine…and let me tell you, it’s a journey that ends with a steep climb and life on fast forward. When it’s all said and done, we start at the bottom again on Monday morning and do the climb all over. Welcome to my world! Since arriving in America 10 years ago (yes, believe it or not) we have now been in Orange County for the past four years. It was March 1, 2008 that my wife Debbie, my daughter Tayla, my brother Shaun and 2 cats arrived on a plane from Cape Coral, Florida to launch our 21st magazine.

Truthfully, even though I have opened a number of magazines in other cities, I was still afraid. We had never been to Orange County before, and had no idea how we would handle all the traffic or getting around. Plus, we had given ourselves 8 weeks to launch our first publication. To be an entrepreneur, I hear one has to be a bit A.D.D, O.C.D, highenergy and not afraid of risk. I think we had too much naive moxie without the proper preparation behind it. We knew what we knew, which was just enough to get us to take the next steps forward. Any more and we probably would have found a million reasons why we could not get it done.

My biggest challenge was that the day before I left, I lost the sight in my left eye. Once I arrived in Orange County I found an eye doctor on Google and in 24 hours I was having an operation for a detached retina. I got my sight back, but had to wear an eye patch for the next 2 months. For those of you that have never had an injury that caused you to stand out from the crowd, this was a great awakening for me.

Contrary to popular belief, pirates are not sexy, they are scary. The world did not smile when I walked into businesses to cold call on them. People laughed, snickered, or just walked away. The only advantage was that when I went out at night, I never battled to get a seat at the bar or restaurant. A path opened up for me right to the front. Even the dance floor opened up and left me a wide area in which to show off my nonexistent moves. I believe in the human spirit to overcome hardships and adversity. In October 2008, our world and way of life changed drastically. People stopped spending money, they were afraid; the unknown is scary, just like that 6’3” pirate with the eye patch that talked with a funny South African accent. We all get scared, but taking that next step and then another moves us closer to our desired outcome. Today we celebrate our journey... it’s our 4 year anniversary in Orange County. I celebrate my team, each and everyone brings a unique skill, passion, fun, energy and weirdness to work every day. I celebrate all our customers (thank you), many are our friends now, their success is our joy and their struggle was our pain. I don’t know what lies ahead, but from my perspective, I can only see blue skies. I guess that’s just the preverbal optimist in me. It’s been a great ride, and I look forward to the road ahead. To our future, go get it! And always remember that life is awesome!
