The most painless way of surviving change is by choosing timeless finishes and furnishings for your home from the get-go. Neutrals never seem to go out of style, and there’s a very good reason for that. Neutrals have universal appeal because, if you think about it, there’s not much about this palette to offend. Neutrals are subtle, simple and frankly, they don’t have a lot to say. While this last point might sound somewhat negative, it’s actually a good thing – especially in relation to longevity. Rather than making a bold statement, neutrals tend to hang back and let the other elements do all the talking. Focal points and pops of colour can come in small but potent doses, and then when it’s no longer in style, it’s relatively easy and cheap to update. Think upholstery and bedding, window coverings, area rugs, artwork, and small pieces

of furniture. Meanwhile, go neutral for larger-scale elements which are also generally more expensive, including flooring, countertops and cabinets, backsplash, appliances, walls and even larger pieces of furniture. By going neutral, you won’t have to update these any time soon.

BUT CHANGE HAPPENS

Whether you like it or not, change happens. Some of my clients’ instinct has been to resist change, and that never works out well. Instead, embrace it. The “timeless” tip above admittedly requires some forethought when planning, designing and outfitting your home. (And that’s just one area where a professional designer can really help, if you’re wondering!) But if you haven’t thought quite that far ahead in the past, don’t be afraid to make some changes as life happens, to enhance your home’s function and ensure

Try to get ahead of life’s changes. We don’t always know what’s coming down the pipe, so when purchasing something new for the home, always look for a multi-functional option. Aside from performing their primary function, multi- purpose pieces will always give you a lot more mileage by virtue of their design. For example, an ottoman that doubles as storage and triples as extra seating or a table-type surface gives the standard foot-rest-only ottoman a run for its money. But this kitchen to-do is a must — for reasons you might not even think about. Luckily, it’s not something you have to tackle every week, or — for some appliances — every month. Here’s why cleaning appliances matters.

THOSE PESKY GERMS

Of course, germs in a fridge make sense: You’re stashing raw meat, vegetables, and dairy — all items that can quickly turn into a science experiment. But did you know that appliances like dishwashers can accumulate germs?

It’s true. Whether you’re cleaning a refrigerator or a dishwasher, follow the manufacturer’s directions for how and when to clean. If you can’t clean the fridge all at once, do one shelf or one door at a time, over a week. To quickly clean your dishwasher, run a hot-water cycle with a cup of white vinegar, upright, in the top rack.

YOUR UTILITY BILLS

Dirty appliances have to work harder, and that translates into higher utility bills. Clean the coils on your fridge, for example, so it easier for the appliance to stay cool. Spills on the interior of an oven might make it harder to generate heat.

THE APPLIANCE’S LIFESPAN

You wouldn’t let your car go thousands of extra miles without an oil change — it’s an essential step to keep the engine running efficiently. Think of appliance cleaning in the same way: A cleaner appliance works better and lasts longer, protecting your pricey investment for years.

TOFU STIR FRY

WITH SPINACH , ZUCCHINI AND LEMON

This is a fantastic vegetarian or vegan meal and it can also be used as a healthy vegetable side dish. If you use it as a side dish, feel free to leave the tofu out. Serves 4 .

INGREDIENTS

• 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided

• 1 medium size cooking onion, about 1 cup diced

• 1 14 oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

• 1 450 gram package of firm or extra firm tofu

• 2 small zucchini, diced into 1/2-1 inch cubes

• 2 cups of baby spinach

• 1/2 tsp salt, more to taste

• Freshly ground pepper to taste

• Zest and juice of 1/2 lemon

DIRECTIONS

STEP ONE: Cut the tofu and place it on a paper towel and carefully blot it dry.

STEP TWO: In a large sauté pan, heat 2 tbsp oil over med high heat until shimmering.

STEP THREE: Add onion and chickpeas, toss with oil. Sprinkle with some of the salt. Spread mixture over the pan so that the contents are in one layer. Let cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes, toss and repeat. Do this a few times so that parts of the chickpeas develop a crust and become golden brown in spots, the onion will be the same. Remove to a heat proof dish.

STEP FOUR: Put the pan back on the heat. Add 1 tbsp more of the oil and add tofu, toss to coat, cook undisturbed until the tofu has crusted, toss and allow the tofu to brown on a few sides. Sprinkle with a little salt. Remove the tofu and add it to the dish with the chickpeas and onions.

STEP FIVE: Put pan back on the heat, add the remainder of the oil, add zucchini, toss to coat, sprinkle with a little salt. Cook until the zucchini is golden brown all over, about 3-4 minutes, add the spinach by handful and toss until the spinach had wilted a little.

STEP SIX: Add the chickpea, onion, tofu mixture pack to the pan with the zucchini and spinach and gently toss through.

STEP SEVEN: Add the zest and juice of half a lemon. Gently toss.

STEP EIGHT: Remove to platter, sprinkle with pepper. Serve. ◆
