3 THINGS YOU NEED TO DO THIS YEAR Better LAWN for a
A HEALTHY LAWN IS A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO ADD VALUE TO YOUR PROPERTY AND CREATE AN ENJOYABLE SPACE FOR OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING. IT ALSO ENHANCES THE ENVIRONMENT BY FILTERING RAINWATER, ATTRACTING BIRDS AND GOOD INSECTS, AND ABSORBING POLLUTION.
Regular maintenance and a watchful eye for potential problems can help you make the most of your personal oasis while contributing to a beautiful, vibrant urban environment. Here are some tips to help make your outdoor space one of the best on the block:
MOW HIGH
It’s best to keep the blade of your lawnmower raised for a 2.5 to 3 inch cut to help a strong root system develop in the lawn and discourage weed growth.
It’s also a good idea to alternate your mowing pattern and mow often enough that you aren’t removing more than a third of the grass.
WATCH FOR PESTS
IT’S NOT UNCOMMON FOR YARDS TO COME UNDER THREAT FROM INSECTS, WEEDS AND DISEASES. A SMALL NUMBER OF WEEDS OR BUGS IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. AND IF YOU CATCH A PROBLEM BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF HAND, YOU WILL HAVE AN EASIER TIME DEALING WITH IT.
Urban pesticides can help manage these threats and keep outdoor spaces healthy and enjoyable. They come in consumer formulations that are specifically made for use by homeowners. Products on store shelves are approved by Health Canada before they are made available to consumers to ensure they’re safe for people, pets and the environment.
WATER EARLY AND DEEPLY
The best time to water your lawn is in the early morning when you’ll lose less moisture to evaporation. Watering in the evening can leave your grass susceptible to disease.
Try watering deeply 1-3 times per week instead of everyday. That will encourage deep root growth and help your grass survive in drought conditions. Make sure to follow any watering restrictions that may be in place in your neighbourhood. ◆ newscanada.com

HOME Harmonizing DESIGN
By Brandon Lange of BZ Interiors | Photography by Kiely Ramos
NAVIGATE THE INTRICATE PROCESS OF MERGING AESTHETICS TO CREATE A COHESIVE AND PERSONALIZED LIVING SPACE EVERYONE LOVES.
Designing a home that satisfies both partners’ diverse tastes and needs can be daunting. You sway towards classic design, and he prefers modern details. It seems like a design conundrum, right? However, by following a thoughtful approach that emphasizes collaboration and compromise, you can create a space that reflects the unique personalities of all occupants while fostering a sense of unity and harmony. As an interior designer, I come across these issues all the time; here is how to navigate the process like a pro.
First, it’s a good idea to consider the function of each room and the emotions you wish to cultivate within them. Are you aiming for a serene bedroom retreat or a vibrant living room gathering space? Understanding these intentions helps guide your design choices towards a unified vision. While you and your partner may have differing styles, the feelings you want to evoke within your home often overlap. When merging contrasting styles, identifying elements that can bridge the gap between your preferences is key. Whether it’s a shared love for dark and moody hues or a mutual appreciation for light and bright spaces, seek out these
commonalities and capitalize on them. Look beyond surface-level differences and focus on the underlying themes or textures that resonate with both of you.
Embrace the concept of layering to blend different styles within your home seamlessly. Rather than attempting to reconcile every detail, focus on integrating pieces that enhance the overall harmony of the space. Mix and match furniture styles, incorporating elements from both partners’ preferences to create a balanced composition. For example, pair a sleek, modern sofa with vintage-inspired accent chairs for an eclectic yet cohesive look. Incorporating a variety of textures, materials, and patterns adds depth and visual interest to your design scheme. Experiment with contrasting textures such as smooth leather
against rough-hewn wood or plush velvet juxtaposed with sleek metal accents. By embracing the richness of diversity, you can create a dynamic and inviting space.
When merging two distinct design styles, the key lies in a collaborative approach and a willingness to compromise. Of course, communication is paramount; it fosters understanding and helps to bridge any gaps in preferences. Embrace the opportunity to explore new ideas together, seeking common ground while honouring everyone’s tastes. Flexibility is essential; be open to experimentation and trust in the creative process
to yield innovative solutions. Allow your home to evolve organically as you blend your unique styles, embracing the fluidity of design. Throughout this journey, savour each moment of transformation—from the sparks of inspiration to the triumphs over challenges. Every decision made and every detail refined contributes to the harmonious fusion of your collective vision. Ultimately, the joy lies in the final result and the collaborative effort and growth experienced along the way.
Creating a home that satisfies everyone’s unique preferences requires a careful balance of creativity, cooperation, and compromise. It’s more than just building walls and floors; it’s about crafting a space that meets practical needs while also reflecting the essence of those who inhabit it. The process of merging design styles is a challenge and an opportunity for personal and creative growth. It’s a chance to learn more about each other’s tastes and preferences and to create a space that truly reflects the unique blend of your personalities.
DESIGNER TIPS
Embrace contrast: Opposing forces create intriguing interiors. Merge modern and traditional styles for depth. Use colour to unify; choose a neutral base and add strategic pops.
Edit with discipline: Combining modern art and antiques needs careful curation. Select pieces that complement in scale, colour, and style for balance.
Cohesive styling: Create harmony with repeated shapes, patterns, and textures. Consistency across rooms blends styles seamlessly for an inviting atmosphere.
