WITH MANGO SALSA

INGREDIENTS

MANGO SALSA

• 1 mango peeled and diced

• 1/2 red pepper seeded and diced

• 1 tbsp of olive oil

• Juice of 1 lime + some zest

• 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro

• 1/2 tsp salt

• pinch of chili flakes

Combine all ingredients and let sit at room temperature while you are preparing the tacos.

TACOS

• 4 pieces of frozen haddock, or cod thawed

• 2 tbsp of oil

• 3 tbsp each smoked paprika, dried oregano, and thyme

• 1 tsp each of, cumin, onion and garlic powder

• 1/2 tsp each salt and black pepper

• 1 cup finely shredded red cabbage

• 1 avocado sliced

• 1 cup of your favourite tomato salsa

• 1 pkg of 12" taco shells

Prep time: 25 mins | Serves: 4

DIRECTIONS

STEP ONE: Peel and cut the avocado and reserve.

STEP TWO: Prep the cabbage and reserve.

STEP THREE: Mix the spices together.

STEP FOUR: Pat dry the thawed fish thoroughly, and then dredge the fish in the dry rub.

STEP FIVE: Turn on cast iron pan to medium-high. Once hot, add oil to the pan and then place the fish in the pan. Turn after about 2-3 mins, or when you see a nice crust developing. Cook all 4 sides this way. Remove from heat and cover to keep warm.

STEP SIX: Wipe out pan and place tortillas one at a time on medium heat for roughly 5-15 seconds, or until you see bubbling and blistering, then flip to warm the other side.

Note: If you want everything ready at once, you can warm the tortillas in another pan while you are cooking the fish.

STEP SEVEN: Fill your taco shells when they are warm with the fish, slaw, cabbage, avocado and salsa. Sprinkle with cilantro. Enjoy! ◆

FOCAL POINT IN YOUR HOME

A FOCAL POINT IS something – anything – that attracts the eye in a given space. In photography or a painting, it is the point at which the “eye” or lens capturing the image is focused. In interior design, a focal point is similar: it is an area that draws attention due to being more dramatic than other areas in the space. In a room, a focal point can come in many forms. It can be built-in or a temporary element; it can be large or small; it can even A focal point is something – anything – that attracts the eye

Beyond this, there are a few different ways of creating a focal point and ensuring it has the right the emphasis.

HIGHLIGHTING EXISTING FOCAL POINTS

Many homes, and even most rooms, will already have a focal point built right in, such as a fireplace, a window with a great view, or another notable architectural feature. This is where the focus should fall. If you’re having trouble identifying the focal point, clear the room and view it from the entrance. Where does the eye naturally gravitate? Odds are, that is the focal point. Now, re-organize the empty space with a focus around this focal point.

A fireplace can be highlighted by arranging furniture to create a cozy seating area that draws attention and guests to this central feature. Add further emphasis by accessorizing the mantel with carefully curated artwork, a large mirror or decorative objects.

If the focal point is a window, frame the view with window treatments that enhance rather than obstruct the sightlines. Arrange furniture to maximize the view, positioning seating areas facing the windows or patio doors to make the most of the outdoor scenery. Other architectural features, such as exposed beams, intricate moldings or arched doorways can be highlighting with strategic lighting or decorative accents. Use contrasting paint colours or wallpaper to emphasize these stunning details and make them stand out as focal points within the room.

Some larger rooms can have multiple focal points. Treat each one as its own space, with dedicated elements to highlight the focus.

CREATING A FOCAL POINT

Some rooms don’t have an obvious focal point, but it’s easy to create one. Infuse your space with personality and charm by adorning a prominent wall with captivating artwork. Opt for oversized pieces or a gallery wall arrangement to command attention and create character. Consider artworks that reflect your personal style or evoke a particular mood, whether it’s a vibrant abstract painting, a collection of vintage photographs, or a striking sculpture. Experiment with placement and framing to achieve the desired visual impact, ensuring that the artwork becomes the focal point that anchors the room’s design.

Lighting is another natural focus in a room. Statement pieces such as dazzling chandeliers or sculptural pendant lights double as works of art, and from a focus standpoint, treat them the same way. Choose designs that complement the room’s aesthetic while adding an element of drama and sophistication. Position the

lighting fixture strategically, such as above a dining table or in the centre of a living room, to draw the eye upward and create a stunning focal point that commands attention day and night.

Do not forget that Furniture can also provide a great focal point. A statement piece of furniture, such as a sofa, bed or dining table can serve as a focal point in its own right. Furniture in contrasting colours and textures will also draw the eye. Distinct forms can also foster emphasis,

For example, a dining table, an occasional chair or a large wall or cabinet. Place this piece into the space first, then build the rest of the room around it.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THESE INANIMATE OBJECTS CAN BRING LIFE TO THE ROOM, FACILITATING VISUAL FLOW, NATURAL FOOT TRAFFIC, ASSEMBLY AREAS AND FOCAL POINTS.

To achieve this, resist the urge to push all the furniture up against the walls. This does nothing but leave a gaping hole in the centre of the room, with the furniture and people pressed up against the perimeter. If the goal is to mix and mingle, and use the entire space rather than just the outskirts, consider the following tips for a functional and fabulous furniture layout.

Before diving into furniture placement, it’s crucial to understand the primary purpose of the living room. Is it a space for entertaining guests, a family movie night, or a cozy reading area – or all three?

Identifying the room’s function will help dictate the type and arrangement of furniture required.

The next step is to segment the space into functional zones, each serving a distinct purpose: sitting area, entertainment centre, “book nook,” and so on. Clearly delineating these areas allows for efficient use of space and ensures that each activity has its designated spot.

While planning the space, remember that people come and go, and factor the flow of traffic in and out of the room. Maintaining a seamless flow of movement is essential for comfort and function, so aim to create clear pathways, allowing easy navigation between different zones. Avoid placing furniture in the path of natural traffic patterns, such as between doorways and to each zone, ensuring harmony and accessibility.

Identify and enhance the room’s focal points and let these guide the furniture layout. Whether it’s a fireplace, a large window with a scenic view, or a stunning piece

of artwork, arrange focus the furniture to complement and draw attention to these features. This not only adds character to the space but also serves as a natural guide in an open, empty area.

When placing furniture, aim for symmetry – a timeless principle in interior design that promotes balance and harmony. While it doesn’t necessarily mean mirroring furniture on each side, it involves distributing visual weight evenly. Achieve symmetry by balancing larger furniture pieces with smaller ones, creating a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing arrangement.

To build on the concept of symmetry, consider scale when choosing and placing furniture in the space. Oversized furniture can overwhelm a room, while undersized pieces may make it feel sparse.
