When Ana and Sara say they are about building relationships that last—they really really mean it! I started working with Ana 6-7 years ago, before Sara joined her…and as life goes we changed our minds about the timing of a move. Over those years if I called Ana, she was always accessible and generous with information and support. Add to this, she marries her detailed knowledge of communities and housing/market history with flexibility and understanding of our specific context and needs. Through the whole process—the strategy of selling/buying timing and this crazy market, renovating, staging, selling and purchasing, and the transition time after—we could completely trust Ana and Sara to…know or solve literally everything! They have a network of trusted professionals and tradesmen that they have fostered over many years, and they really worked as a team with us. If any little or bigger “emergency” happened I had complete trust it could be efficiently and calmly problem solved—and with a sense of good will and…even humour sometimes! We feel very very lucky and are deeply grateful that Ana and Sara were with us through all the ups and downs— we feel we arrived in the best place we possibly could because of their dedication and love for their work

We have lived around the world and I never would have imagined that finding a place to live in Toronto would be so challenging. As Newcomers to Canada and Toronto, we had no idea how or where to start looking. We had our minds first set on a particular Toronto neighbourhood and Karen subtly guided us to another neighbourhood that offered many comforts, bakeries and cafes from our culture plus it was in the catchment area for a top-ranked high school for our daughter. We love the location and are proud to call it home. THANK YOU Karen, for your brilliant assistance!

IDEAS FOR LOWERING YOUR HEATING COSTS THIS WINTER
1 / CHANGE FURNACE FILTERS
4 / INSTALL A HEAT PUMP
If you have an oil or gas-burning furnace, remember that it must work harder if the filter is dirty. If your electricity bills seem unusually high, try changing your filter more frequently and/or getting your machine serviced.
A heat pump works by transferring heat from outside your home to the inside. It ’s more energy efficient than other types of heating, like electric heat since the pumps don’t have to generate heat from scratch. Instead, they move and intensify the heat. This means you likely won’t be paying as much for your heat each month, though there can be higher initial buy-in costs.
2 / USE A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT Many of us know that turning down the heat at night or while we’re away all day can boost savings, but it’s inconvenient to constantly be making those adjustments and easy to forget. A programmable thermostat lets you set it to automatically turn up the heat gradually in time for your morning routine, or remotely manage your settings – turning on your heat as you drive back from the airport.
A COZY AND WARM SPACE TO RELAX IN IS A WINTERTIME MUST FOR MANY CANADIANS. BUT CRANKING UP THE HEAT CAN REALLY ADD UP. HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN STAY TOASTY WITHOUT INCURRING SKY-HIGH COSTS: 6
3 / AUDIT YOUR ENERGY AND TAKE ACTION An energy audit is a formal test to determine where energy is lost in your home. Maybe it’s through a thin roof, poorly insulated walls or drafts around your windows and doors. This kind of test can help you discover the and the amount of money you’re spending to make up for energy loss and offers ways to reduce it.
5 / SWITCH TO SOLAR While there is some upfront cost to this solution, it can be a major cost-saver pretty quickly. Not only can this be better for your wallet, but it’s also better for the environment, helping reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and do your part to combat climate change. Some insurance providers, including Aviva Canada, may offer better insurance rates if you utilize green replacements. Whatever household updates you decide to make, be sure to let your insurer know — that way they’ll be able to update your coverage appropriately, and, who knows, you might just qualify for a better rate. Find more information at aviva.ca. ◆

BY THE
RULES
By Designer Amanda Shields | Photography by Kiely Ramos
AS A DESIGNER, I’M OFTEN ASKED, “HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IN A ROOM?” WELL, A HOME CAN “WORK” (OR FALL FLAT, FOR THAT MATTER!) DUE TO A NUMBER OF FACTORS. WITH THAT SAID, THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT ALL GREAT SPACES HAVE IN COMMON. HERE ARE MY TOP THREE RULES FOR ROOMS THAT “WORK.” ALWAYS PRIORITIZE FUNCTION Coming from a designer, this may sound counter-intuitive, but if a piece has no practical purpose in your life, then it’s just clutter. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a time and place for beautiful objects and in some cases, their express purpose is adornment, but for anything other than art and accessories, consider its functional value first. Ask yourself: Does it work? Does it fit the space? Does it meet a need? Then, layer in aesthetic value and how that this particular item will contribute to the intended look and feel of the room.
MEASURE BEFORE YOU BUY You’re ready to hit the furniture showrooms. Maybe your renovation is finally finished, or your home has been begging for a redesign. Either way, this day has been a long time coming. But before you rush out with your credit card in hand, don’t forget your measuring tape.
10
HERE ARE SOME STANDARD MEASUREMENTS TO KEEP IN YOUR BACK POCKET: • Seating usually sits 18 inches up off the floor. Factor this into your ideal height fort coffee tables and side tables. • The coffee table should be about 2/3 the width of the sofa. • The distance between seats (like a sofa and armchairs) should be between three and 10 feet. • Leave 12 to 24 inches between an area rug and the wall, depending on the room size. • Artwork should sit 56 inches up from the floor (standard eye-level), or six to 12 inches from the top of a sofa, console table or fireplace mantel. • The dining table should allocate at least 24 inches per diner, but ideally 30 inches.
This brings me to another common measurement mistake: guesstimating furniture size. Remember that your home is very different from the furniture showroom, and the same piece of furniture will look completely different once you bring it home – that is, if it fits through your door. Avoid disappointment by measuring all doorways and hallways, and the area where the piece is intended to “live,” making
note of ceiling height, windows and any other large-scale furnishings or focal points that may affect its positioning. Ensure you also consider traffic patterns and “breathing room” around your furniture.
GIVE YOUR FURNITURE SPACE A fabulous room isn’t just about the furniture in it. The air around your furniture is equally important, both in terms of aesthetics and function. “Negative space” refers to the empty areas in your home. In a designed room, strategic areas are intentionally left empty for a couple of key reasons. From a functional perspective, the area around your furniture allows you to use it with comfort and manoeuvre around it with ease. Negative space also gives your furnishings the required “breathing room” to stand out in the space without competing
focal points. Finally, they give your eye a break. To refresh our homes In the new year ahead some people will lean on the help of a professional designer like myself. Others take the do-ityourself approach. Regardless always keep in mind some decorating rules are there to be followed for good reason and will really help you create the perfect stylish and functional place to call home. ◆

Wood-fired
BATHING is making a comeback By HelloGoodland.com | Photography by Hideaway Creative
GOODLAND, a new brand dedicated to creating design-forward immersive outdoor living products, has exceeded the sales predictions for its first offering — a Wood Burning Hot Tub — by a mile, and shipped hundreds of tubs far and wide across North America, demonstrating growing interest in slow-living and wood-fired bathing culture. Originally, Pearce expected to only sell a few dozen a year, but the interest hugely exceeded expectations — showing the need for outdoor objects that are simultaneously beautiful, connect us to nature, and designed with the planet in mind. Beyond simply a product, GOODLAND is genuinely experiential — it’s a moment to pause, not just a hot tub.
14
IN A CULTURE OF INSTANT GRATIFICATION, SLOW LIVING IS PICKING UP STEAM. CANADIAN COMPANY GOODLAND ASKS YOU TO DO THE WORK YOURSELF, BUT PROMISES A SOOTHING REWARD.
Founded by furniture maker and designer Craig Pearce, GOODLAND creates well-designed, minimalist products to reconnect with nature, whether in the middle of the city or the middle of the forest. The Wood Burning Hot Tub is only the first in a series of upcoming products, each designed to promote everyday rituals and the simple act of slowing down outdoors. “It’s so exciting to see the growth of GOODLAND. Two years ago it was just a wild idea, and the reception we’ve received has blown us away, truly,” explains GOODLAND Founder Craig Pearce. “Not only are people buying tubs but customers are claiming it has changed their lives — it’s like we’re building a community of authentic bathing fanatics, and I love it. It’s been an exciting time and a challenge for our small team, but we’re all here putting in the work with a smile on our faces.” ▹
15
HOME DÉCOR
The Wood Burning Hot Tub sits in stark contrast to conventional hot tubs — like those made from non-recyclable materials and focuses on high-tech convenience, LEDs, loud jets, and complex mixtures of chemicals just to stay sanitary. Instead, GOODLAND’s Wood Burning Hot Tub invites a more immersive process. The soaking
tub is made entirely from recyclable materials — like aluminum, western red cedar, and oak — and crafted in Canada. The Wood Burning Hot Tub is an inviting way to enjoy your outdoor space when the weather gets colder, too, and can even be used as a cold plunge when temperatures rise up.
16
From the ritual of slowly making a cup of coffee in the morning to disconnecting from devices, GOODLAND is part of a growing movement that celebrates the beauty of slowness, rather than grasping at instant gratification. In an era where technology is part of virtually every experience, GOODLAND encourages analog moments. Intentional design is also paramount. The Wood Burning Hot Tub has become a feature at notable design-forward properties like Arro Dunes in Joshua Tree, or Doah House in Virginia’s Blue Mountains. ◆
RECIPE
Stuffed ACORN SQUASH
18 18
DIRECTIONS STEP ONE Prep Time: 1 hour | Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS • 2 acorn squash, cut in half across the rib to make 4 halves
Preheat oven to 400°. Place 4 halves of the squash on a parchment lined baking sheet. If the squash does not sit straight, cut a bit off the bottom to level out. STEP TWO
• 1 onion, diced
Use an ice cream scoop to remove seeds and brush all over with 2 tbsp olive oil. Season with salt and roast until al dente, roughly 30 minutes. Set aside when done. Meanwhile, cook rice and set aside.
• 2 celery stalks, diced
STEP THREE
• 4 tbsp olive oil, divided
• 1 medium apple, diced, skin left on
While rice is cooking, heat a large skillet over medium heat and heat remaining oil. Add onions and celery stirring occasionally until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
• 1 cup cooked wild rice
STEP FOUR
• 2 cups sliced mushrooms • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
• 1/4 cup apple juice • 1/2 cup toasted each pecans and pistachios • 3 tsp dried sage • 2 tsp chopped dried rosemary • 1 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp pepper
Season with salt and pepper. Add garlic, remaining spices and cook until fragrant, 1-2 minutes more. STEP FIVE
Add nuts, apple juice and rice. Stir until combined. STEP SIX
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Divide mixture among the 4 squash halves. STEP SEVEN
Put back into the oven and cook another 10-15 minutes or until the squash is tender and filling is warmed.
COOK'S Enjoy as a complete meal or cut each half into slices and serve as a side. For the meat eaters in the family, you could add some cooked, chopped prosciutto into the stuffing mixture. But keeping as is, is perfect for vegetarians and those that prefer a plant based meal. Also note that the skin is fully edible once cooked!
